I used to supply equipment to two Polish friends who were woodcutters.
One day I was out with the senior partner who had a contract to fell
a lot of trees in a local town park that had Dutch elm disease.
We looked at the trees, he then said I have to look at another job, do
you mind waiting here for my two woodcutters, you can look after the
two chain saws.
He said jokingly if you get bored you can cut some down.
So I thought I would help him out and cut some down, but I had to
plan where to fell the trees, if you fell them on top of each other or
up against another they are difficult to log up.
I had quite a crowd watching me when a tree came down they would
yell timber.
The senior partner returned before his men, he was absolutely
amazed it looked as though a bomb had hit the park I had cut down
about 30 of the trees.
The secret to my success I planned where to drop the trees but also
I had two sharpened chain saws; they have even a machine to sharpen
the saws, I could cut a tree down in minutes not hours.
There are now forestry logging machines on caterpillar tracks
that can cut off all the branches and fell a tree down in minutes.
Oh for automation - but you still have to prepare and plan your work.
It often takes longer to prepare than it does to complete the work
