Growing taters in a container
4/12/2013 6:16:35 PM
Potato's take up a lot of room when grown in a traditional farm. There is a solution though. Grow your tater's in a container!
People grow potato's in all kinds of containers. Big wire cages, plastic boxes, even heavy duty trash bags!
I have two areas I grow tater's in. With these 2 containers, one of which is made of wood, the other is one of those plastic cage things for putting small pets or children in outside so they don't wander off. Between these 2 containers, I should net about 100 lbs of potato's this year. Pictures are below.

Take a look at this container gardening setup. This is perfect for a small space, as long as you get enough sunshine for the plants. Or you could setup some grow lights if it's indoors. It's also on wheels, so you can move it around easily.

Our potato's are growing nicely. As the potato plants get taller, I add more mulch to the beds. This allows the plants to grow more taters. By the end of the season I expect to have around 60 to 80 lbs of potato's, maybe more.
Next year, I'll have more beds setup to grow potato's and should get close to 200 lbs of potato's.

The weather has been somewhat strange this year, and has really messed up my tater plants. I had planted them in wood mulch, which I have done several times before.

However, this year, with all the extra rain that we've had, the mulch was holding too much water around the tater plants, and caused them to rot.

With the way that the weather patterns seem to be changing, all of us gardeners are having to adapt and find new and different ways of doing some things.

This next year, I will redo my raised beds, add more dirt, and make them drain better to help with the excess water.

Our potato's didn't do too badly this year. They have come and gone, and we harvested about 20 lbs in a 5 ft square raised bed. The potato's were planted in 6 inches of soil, and as the plants grew, more soil was added so that the yield would be greater.
