‘Long live Europe?’ Macron says only Franco-German union may stop global ‘chaos’

French President Emmanuel Macron has embarked on a charm offensive at the German parliament, hailing cooperation between Paris and Berlin as a protective force against global chaos and foes beyond Europe’s borders.

France and Germany are facing the task of making Europe more “resilient” in these times of a renewed rise of nationalism and “opening a new chapter in European history,” Macron told German MPs on Sunday, adding that the two countries “owe this to Europe.” He then apparently decided to think big, proclaiming that “Europe and the Franco-German pair within it” have to do no less than “not let the world slip into chaos.”

And to do that the French leader suggested quite a traditional recipe, saying that “Europe must be stronger” as well as more independent and sovereign, while European nations have to actually give up on quite significant parts of their own sovereignty.

And to do that the French leader suggested quite a traditional recipe, saying that “Europe must be stronger” as well as more independent and sovereign, while European nations have to actually give up on quite significant parts of their own sovereignty.

“Each of us has to share their decision-making powers, [harmonize] foreign policy, immigration and development policy as well as [share] an increasing part of the budget and even tax revenues in the spirit of community,” he told the German parliament.

To apparently justify such sacrifices, Macron said that “there are powers that attempt to pit us against each other,”presumably meaning all those outside the European borders, including Russia, China and even Europe’s longstanding ally the USA. The French president seemed to be particularly eager to throw off Washington’s oversight over its European allies as he once again promoted his idea of a European Army, which should, according to him, become a symbol of a united continent.

“Europe would never live up to its true role until it assumes full responsibility for its own affairs,”
the president said, adding that it would otherwise continue to “play a subordinate role in world politics.” He also said that Paris and Berlin have a particular responsibility to help Europe gain “necessary sovereignty.” “Long live the Franco-German friendship. Long live Europe,” he declared.

While repeatedly calling on Europe to take more of this responsibility for its own defense and security, Macron was also quite open about the prospects of this project of his, saying that “this fight is not won and … will never be won.”

Both Macron and Chancellor Merkel repeatedly vowed to “reform” the stagnating European Union while constantly calling for European cohesion and unity.
Other countries, however, seem to be moving the other direction, with a number of eurosceptics coming to power.

The EU remains pretty-much divided on such issues as immigration, and Macron himself found staunch opponents to his immigration policies in Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

And while Paris and Berlin seem to be eager to once again push for a European Army – an idea that actually floated around since the early times of Europe’s post-war integration but was never properly implemented – other nations seem to be reluctant to support it.

Austria said on Friday it would walk away from it because it is “contrary to the Austrian constitutional position.” The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also expressed his skepticism about the idea, saying that Paris and Berlin were getting ahead of themselves, while also saying that Europe’s security could be hard to guarantee without NATO.

Red alert after Guatemala volcano erupts again, 200 flee

© AFP | The Fuego volcano in Guatemala has erupted five times this year, most seriously in June when almost 200 people died

GUATEMALA CITY (AFP) -

Guatemalan authorities on Monday declared a red alert after the Fuego volcano erupted again, forcing about 200 residents to flee.

A fiery glow rose from the crater of Fuego which is erupting for the fifth time this year, one month after the last one and following a June 3 rain of rocks, ash and toxic gases that left almost 200 people dead and 235 missing.

A spokesman for Guatemala's disaster management agency CONRED, David de Leon, said 214 residents who live on the slopes of Fuego, mostly in the southern municipality of Escuintla, were moved to safe zones and more will follow.

He said about 2,000 people in total have been asked to leave the area of the 3,763-meter (12,246-foot) volcano, 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Guatemala City.

Since the eruption began Sunday morning, lava rises 500 meters above Fuego's crater, while the ash column exceeds one kilometer above the volcanic cone and is causing a rain of particles, the Institute of Volcanology said.

The previous eruption lasted from October 12-13 with loud booms and lava flow. It caused the evacuation of 62 people and closed a highway.

Death Toll Rises to 76 in California Fire With Winds Ahead

First responders watch as the motorcade of President Donald Trump visits a neighborhood impacted by the wildfires, Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, in Paradise, Calif. AP Photo.

CHICO, Calif. (AP) — Northern California crews battling the country’s deadliest wildfire in a century were bracing for strong winds, with gusts up to 50 miles per hour, creating the potential to erode gains they have made in containing a disaster that has killed at least 76 and leveled a town.

Even as hundreds of searchers sift through the rubble in the town of Paradise looking for the dead, nearly 1,300 people remain unaccounted for more than a week after the fire sparked in Butte County, Sheriff Kory Honea announced Saturday night. Authorities stressed that the long roster does not mean they believe all those people are missing.

Honea pleaded with fire evacuees Saturday to review the list of those reported as unreachable by family and friends and call if they are safe. Deputies have located hundreds of people to date, but the overall number keeps growing because they are adding more names, including those from the disaster’s chaotic early hours, Honea said.God Bringing Revival to CA

“It’s really very important for you to take a look at the list and call us if you’re on the list,” he said.

The remains of five more people were found Saturday, including four in the decimated town of Paradise and one in nearby Concow, bringing the number of dead to 76.

Honea said among the dead was Lolene Rios, 56, whose son Jed tearfully told KXTV in Sacramento that his mother “had endless amount of love for me.”

President Donald Trump toured the area Saturday, joined by California’s outgoing and incoming governors, both Democrats who have traded sharp barbs with the Republican administration. He also visited Southern California, where firefighters were making progress on a wildfire that tore through communities west of Los Angeles from Thousand Oaks to Malibu, killing three people.

The president pledged the full support of the federal government. Gov. Jerry Brown and Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom thanked him for coming out.

“We’ve never seen anything like this in California, we’ve never seen anything like this yet. It’s like total devastation,” Trump said as he stood amid the ruins of Paradise.

Rain was forecast for midweek, which could help firefighters but also complicate the search for remains.

Northern California’s Camp Fire has destroyed nearly 10,000 homes and torched 233 square miles (603 square kilometers). It is 55 percent contained.

The fire zone in Northern California is to some extent Trump country, and that enthusiasm was on display as dozens of people cheered and waved flags as his motorcade went by.

Kevin Cory, a wildfire evacuee who lost his home in Paradise, praised Trump for coming to a state that is often at odds with the White House.

“I think that California’s been really horrible to him and the fights. I mean they’re suing him,” he said. “It’s back and forth between the state and the feds. It’s not right.”

But for the most part, survivors, some who had barely escaped and no longer had homes, were too busy packing up what little they had left or seeking help to pay much attention to the president’s visit.

Michelle Mack Couch, 49, waited in line to get into a Federal Emergency Management Agency center in the city of Chico. She needed a walker for her elderly mother and tags for her car.

“Let’s hope he gets us some help,” said Couch, who voted for Trump and whose rental home burned down last week. But as far as taking time out to watch the president, she said wryly, “We don’t have a TV anymore.”

Honea expressed hope that Trump’s visit would help with recovery, saying the tour by the Republican president and California’s Democratic leaders “signals a spirit of cooperation here that ultimately benefit this community and get us on a path toward recovery.”

In Southern California, Trump also met briefly at an airport hangar with families and first responders touched by the shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks more than a week ago.

Trump called the shooting at a country music bar, which left 12 dead, “a horrible, horrible event.”

NewsReal: California Wildfires, Climate Change, And The Impossible Brexit

newsreal california wildfires brexit
When Trump weighed in on the record-breaking California wildfire season last week, he was - as usual - roundly condemned in the media for 'insensitivity', 'stupidity' and 'ignorance'. But what if his comments about forest management and climate change were actually well-informed?

This week on NewsReal With Joe & Niall, your hosts discuss the raging California wildfires and the pretentious ideological beliefs that lead federal and state authorities to go way beyond their station by attempting (and repeatedly failing) to tackle localenvironmental problems via hare-brained measures intended to 'save the planet'.

Also discussed on this episode is the interminable 'Brexit' fiasco. This political wildfire flared again last week when May's govt announced that 'a Brexit deal' had been settled with the EU. 'Brexit' in name only, the deal effectively keeps the UK in the EU, which led to the mass resignation of govt ministers and the threat of an imminent leadership challenge.

Watch to learn why the UK cannot leave the EU...

Two gigantic asteroids will zip past earth today, warns NASA

NASA asteroid warning: Two giant space rocks will make an Earth Close Approach today
NASA's asteroid trackers have warned that two gigantic asteroids will zip past earth on November 20, 2018. The first asteroid dubbed, Asteroid 2018 VQ6 will have its close approach at around 07.29 AM GMT, while the second space body, Asteroid VP7 will make its close flyby at 07.49 AM.

Initial analysis conducted by scientists at NASA reveal that VQ6 will measure somewhere between 12 meters to 35 meters in diameter. On the other hand, Asteroid VP7 is estimated to measure somewhere between 12 meters to 28 meters in diameter.

Experts believe that the first asteroids will reach its closest possible distance to Earth at around 0.02931 astronomical units (AU) and the second cosmic body will have its close approach at 0.01961 AU. It should be noted that one astronomical unit equals about 92.95 million miles, and it is actually the distance between the earth and the sun.

As these space bodies are making its close approach at around 2.72 million miles away, experts have classified these asteroids as 'Near Earth Object' (NEO). Even though a distance like 2.72 million miles is very gigantic in human terms, it is very close in astronomical terms.

"As they orbit the Sun, NEOs can occasionally approach close to Earth. Note that a "close" passage astronomically can be very far away in human terms: millions or even tens of millions of kilometers," NASA says.

As per NASA, any space bodies like asteroid or comet on an orbital path around the Sun of around 1.3 AU or 120.8 million miles can be considered a Near Earth Object.

A few days back, Dr Iain McDonald, a scientist at Cardiff University's school of earth and ocean sciences revealed that earth will be inevitably hit by a gigantic space rock one day or the other. The scientist made these remarks while talking on the BBC's Today programme. During the talk, McDonald claimed that devastating events including asteroid hits had happened throughout history, and such events will happen in the future too.

In the meantime, a section of conspiracy theorists has started claiming that the arrival of these asteroids could be an indication of Nibiru's collision course. As per these conspiracy theorists, Nibiru alias Planet X is a rogue ninth planet that is lurking at the edge of our solar system. These people believe that Nibiru will one day hit the earth resulting in an apocalypse.
