‘ICC is dead to us’: US to use ‘any means’ to shield citizens & allies from war-crime probes

“The United States will use any means necessary to protect our citizens and those of our allies from unjust prosecution by this illegitimate court,” Donald Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, is expected to say, according to a draft speech seen by Reuters. “We will not cooperate with the ICC. We will provide no assistance to the ICC. We will not join the ICC. We will let the ICC die on its own. After all, for all intents and purposes, the ICC is already dead to us.”

The vigorous speech, titled ‘Protecting American Constitutionalism and Sovereignty from International Threats,’according to the Washington Post, will be delivered to a conservative group in Washington on Monday.

The Trump administration will retaliate if the ICC proceeds with a formal investigation into alleged war crimes committed by US forces in Afghanistan. The ICC is considering an official probe after it received 1.17 million allegations from Afghan citizens of atrocities at the hands of the Taliban, local security forces and warlords, as well as the US-led coalition.

In addition, Bolton will vow to protect all American allies from similar probes – in particular Israel, which is being accused of perpetrating war crimes against Palestinian civilians. “The United States will always stand with our friend and ally, Israel,”says Bolton's draft text.

The potential US sanctions against judges, prosecutors and those who cooperate with such a probe might include banning those individuals from entering the US, freezing their assets, and trying them in American courts.

The United States (as well as Russia) signed but never ratified the 2002 Rome Treaty that established the International Criminal Court. The body has since been widely criticized as a “political tool,” especially after The Hague-based court failed to examine NATO’s illegal intervention and bombings of Belgrade in the case of the former Yugoslavia, instead only going after former president Slobodan Milosevic. Nevertheless, the US exerts some influence over the court via European governments, which are dominant in the administration of the ICC. So, even if the ICC were to launch a probe, let alone find US forces guilty of war crimes, it is doubtful that Washington would take any notice of such rulings.

Earthquakes, floods and storms of Biblical proportions: is the end near?

MEL REEVES on SEPTEMBER 13, 2017

Recent events including the solar eclipse, Hurricanes Irma and Harvey and the Mexican earthquake have awakened the superstitions in us all. But though some events in nature can’t be explained, or anticipated much of what is happening in the world can be explained.

The weather should, if nothing else humble us. The Native Americans are definitely on to something with their reverence and respect for the earth. Those who claim spirituality may just know something. African Americans in past generations had a healthy respect for the creation and the Creator as well. But that has dissipated with prosperity. There is no need for such superstitions when space has opened for one in a society in which one was formerly enslaved and then legally segregated.

Despite the progress of Western societies and societies dominated by the free market everything can not be controlled or even perfectly predicted. All of the smart folks with all their degrees could not predict the Mexican earthquake. While it is hurricane season the exact places and times hurricanes will form cannot accurately be predicted. And as Floridians will attest, the weather folks can’t always accurately predict where exactly a hurricane will touch land.

It’s tempting to take small delight in the obvious fallibility of the most advanced and richest society in the history of the world which despite its advances finds itself at nature’s mercy.

Christians as part of the religion talk a lot about the last days and most likely many see these events as signs of the end of time and take the position that these events have been predicted and as a result everything is out of their hands.

Some see the recent weather events as signs of the last days or the end of times. Some would include the prevalence of selfishness, rampant individualism and narcissism as signs as well. Oddly the worst feature of class society, materialism is never included as indicators. Racism or racist genocide is not seen as a sign either, so the racist phenomenon that was Charlottesville would not be added to that list either.

Humans are indeed fallible and we are indeed at the mercy of nature and we are closer to the end than we ever have been.

But we aren’t helpless. While we can’t control the weather we can control our response to much of it. We can create a society in which the State responds as if it is actually supposed to take of its citizens and not like it’s doing us a favor, which is the attitude FEMA seems to have. The fact that individuals have to rescue folks from storms rather the government that taxes us is really not a good thing.

Think about it. The US has money for wars which if the truth is told has nothing to do with our well- being, along with a defense budget that in essence is the military industrial complex’s personal piggy bank.

Despite all our advances and despite the richness of our society and its technical proficiencies, the system we live under responds poorly to disasters and storms. This is partly because there is no money in disaster preparedness and disaster response. So from the perspective of the folks who run society, there is no real benefit to doing things like making sure the most vulnerable are taken care of and placed out of harm’s way.

While folks in the US have been led to believe the worst about Cuba they are actually more prepared for natural disasters than the US. Of course that’s because the people are what’s important in that society. Whereas in this one its property, money and people in that order.

Before Hurricane Irma hit Cuba, the elderly, handicapped, vulnerable adults, pregnant women were all evacuated to safe places and hospitals. There was an orderly evacuation in place to move people from less secure structures to more secure ones.

There is little we can do about the weather. However the constant decline of the climate can be limited as scientists have told us. But free market societies, while having conferences to talk about becoming less dependent on fossil fuels and other pollutants rising from industrial society, do little to make real changes.

While it may appear that the world is coming to an end it doesn’t have to be hastened by the practices of societies based on prioritizing the making of money over the needs of the people.

This system, capitalism, is made by humans who are extremely fallible. Despite the insistence by those it benefits that it can’t be changed, if we are to survive it will have to be changed, replaced, tossed out. You choose the term, but the polar ice caps are melting while storms of the century continue to visit us.

At some point it is going to boil down to, do or die!

Syria's Assad approves gas attack in Idlib despite warning, report says

President Bashar al-Assad has approved a gas attack in the Idlib province, which is the country’s last rebel stronghold, a report on Sunday said.

Reports of Assad's approval comes about a week after President Trump warned the strongman and his allies not to “recklessly attack” the province. Trump called any gas attack a potential “grave humanitarian mistake.”

The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, was first to report on Assad.

U.N. officials believe an offensive on Idlib would trigger a wave of displacement that could uproot an estimated 800,000 people and discourage refugees from returning home. The U.S. and France have warned an Idlib offensive would trigger a humanitarian crisis and warned that a chemical attack in Idlib would prompt a western retaliation.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the international pressure did little to sway Assad, who benefits from support from Russia and Iran. The report said Assad has approved the use of chlorine gas.

For Russia and Iran, both allies of the Syrian government, retaking Idlib is crucial to complete what they see as a military victory in Syria’s civil war after Syrian troops recaptured nearly all other major towns and cities, largely defeating the rebellion against Assad.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday urged his counterparts to accept a cease-fire and avert a “bloodbath” in Idlib. But Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a “total annihilation of terrorists in Syria,” while Iranian President Hassan Rouhani spoke of “cleansing the Idlib region of terrorists.”

On Sunday, government forces bombed the village of Hobeit in Idlib province, killing an infant girl and wounding several other civilians, the Syrian Civil Defense search-and-rescue group reported.

“We haven’t said that the U.S. would use the military in response to an offensive,” one senior administration official told the paper. “We have political tools at our disposal, we have economic tools at our disposal. There are a number of different ways we could respond if Assad were to take that reckless, dangerous step.”

Hurricane "Olivia" approaching Hawaii. Prepare for intense flooding rainfall, damaging winds, large and dangerous surf, and storm surge

Posted by on

Hurricane "Olivia," the 15th named storm of the 2018 Pacific hurricane season, is intensifying as it tracks toward Hawaii. Little change in strength is forecast through late Monday (HST), with gradual weakening possible starting sometime Tuesday, September 11. It is important to not focus on the exact forecast track and intensity when planning for Olivia, NHC said. Persons on all of the main Hawaiian Islands should continue preparing for the likelihood of direct impacts from this system Monday and early Tuesday, September 10 and 11. Those impacts could include intense flooding rainfall, damaging winds, large and dangerous surf, and storm surge.

At 09:00 UTC on Monday, September 10, the center of Hurricane "Olivia" was located about 880 km (545 miles) ENE of Hilo and 1 140 km (705 miles) E of Honolulu, Hawaii. Its maximum sustained winds were 140 km/h (85 mph), making it a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

The system is moving W at 15 km/h (9 mph) with minimum central pressure of 980 hPa.

This general motion is expected to continue through early Monday (HST), followed by a turn toward the WSW starting late Monday. This WSW motion is expected to continue through Tuesday evening. On this forecast track, tropical storm conditions are possible over some parts of Hawaii starting Tuesday.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Oahu, Maui County, including the islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe, and Hawaii County. A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible in the watch area. A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous. A Tropical Storm Warning may be required for some areas that are in the watch area on Monday. Interests on Kauai and Niihau should closely monitor the progress of Olivia, NHC said.

Olivia is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 254 to 381 mm (10 to 15 inches). However, isolated maximum amounts of 508 mm (20 inches) are possible, especially over windward sides of Maui and the Big Island. This rainfall may produce life-threatening flash flooding.

Large swells generated by Olivia are expected to continue to increase across the main Hawaiian Islands. Surf will build as Olivia approaches, and may become damaging along some exposed east facing shorelines starting Tuesday or Wednesday, September 12.

It is important to not focus on the exact forecast track and intensity when planning for Olivia, NHC said. Persons on all of the main Hawaiian Islands should continue preparing for the likelihood of direct impacts from this system Monday and early Tuesday. Those impacts could include intense flooding rainfall, damaging winds, large and dangerous surf, and storm surge.

Regardless of the exact track and intensity that Olivia takes as it approaches the islands, significant effects often extend far from the center. In particular, the mountainous terrain of Hawaii can produce localized areas of strongly enhanced winds and rainfall, even well away from the tropical cyclone center.

REPORT: Toxic red tide algae moves north killing hundreds of thousands of fish

The toxic algae bloom that has carved a trail of dead animals and triggered a putrid stench along western Florida’s coastline has drifted further north, killing hundreds of thousands of fish in the Tampa Bay region.

The legions of dead fish were reported in a 20-mile stretch of coastline from Clearwater to St. Petersburg, environmental officials with Pinellas County told the Tampa Bay Times on Saturday.

The article goes on to state the following:

County workers roamed beaches and trawled offshore to collect the fish carcasses to head off decomposition as some beachgoers turned back. Rotting fish and the strong odor of the algae has previously repelled locals and imperiled Florida’s vital tourism sector for much of the summer.
