US lawmakers seek to ban sales of F-35s to 'hostile & thuggish' Turkey

American lawmakers have introduced a new bipartisan bill seeking to ban F-35 deliveries to an "increasingly hostile and authoritarian" Turkey, partly because of Ankara's decision to purchase Russia's missile defense systems.

Seeking to pressure Turkey into behaving in a manner worthy of NATO "standards," and to limit sharing of the alliance's assets with "hostile actors," Democratic Rhode Island Congressman David Cicilline introduced a bipartisan 'Ban F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Sales to Turkey Act' on Thursday.

Fearing that Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government is growing "increasingly hostile and authoritarian by the day," US lawmakers are calling for a complete ban on the sale or transfer of F-35 aircraft, as well as intellectual property and technical data, to Turkey. Any potential transfers of the multirole stealth fighters would only be possible if the US president certifies that Ankara is not "taking steps to degrade NATO interoperability, exposing NATO assets to hostile actors, or degrading the general security of NATO member countries."

Another three proposed conditions for the transfer of the fifth-generation warplanes include US presidential assurances that Ankara is not seeking to "purchase defense articles from a foreign country with respect to which sanctions are imposed by the United States," jail US citizens, or participate in "military action" which violates international law.

Turkey has been seeking to purchase 116 F-35 units under the Joint Strike Fighter program deals signed in 2014 and 2016. However, the first deliveries of Lockheed Martin planes, slated for 2018-2019, were jeopardized by the growing rift between Washington and Ankara on a number of issues – including Turkey's military operation in Syria and its decision to purchase Russian S-400 air-defense systems.

NATO countries fear that simultaneously operating both S-400s and F-35s could compromise the multi-billion-dollar program and expose its vulnerabilities, since Turkey seeks to combine all information systems on the F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation fighters with the Turkish Air Forces' system network.

"We cannot turn a blind eye to Turkey's thuggish, reprehensible behavior," said Cicilline, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "There has to be consequences for any regime that commits such horrific human rights abuses and constantly steps out of line with our own interests. Banning the sale of these state-of-the-art weapons to Turkey is just common sense. It's important that we hold NATO members to the same standard we would hold any other country."

One of the co-sponsors of Thursday's bill, Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) is also seeking bi-partisan support for 'Relocating US Nuclear Weapons from Turkey Review Act of 2018,' which has yet to be introduced in Congress. Under NATO nuclear sharing, the US keeps around 180 B61 nuclear gravity bombs in Europe, including around 50 at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. The other five sites are in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy. In a letter addressed to US lawmakers, the congressman argues that storing some 50 nukes in Turkey is dangerous and illogical.

"Storing US nuclear weapons in Turkey no longer makes sense," Bilirakis wrote. "Turkey doesn't even have aircraft for delivering them. They would if the United States foolishly sells F-35 aircraft to Turkey, as I have opposed. Turkey is deepening political, economic, and military ties to Russia and China, the two countries the F-35 is most needed to deter and, if necessary, counter."

The hotly discussed Turkey-Russia deal may signal closer relations between both nations, as well as a growing rift between Ankara and its NATO allies, mainly the US. Washington has repeatedly relayed its “concerns” to Turkish officials regarding the S-400 potential purchase. On one occasion, US Defense Secretary James Mattis noted that S-400s are “not going to be interoperable with NATO systems.”

Earlier in April, Assistant Secretary of State Wess Mitchell warned that Ankara’s decision to buy Russia’s advanced complexes exposes Turkey to possible US sanctions and may bar it from getting F-35 jets. “Ankara claims to have agreed to purchase the Russian S-400 missile system, which could potentially lead to sanctions” under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), he said. The document was signed back in August 2017 and is mostly aimed at hindering Russian arms exports.

Earlier this week, the House Armed Services Committee advanced a defense authorization bill, which seeks to ban "major defense equipment" transfers to Turkey. The document notes that S-400 sales "could negatively impact common weapon system development between the United States and Turkey" and "exacerbate current interoperability challenges with respect to common military architecture and information sharing."

Two people died in Connecticut, including a Danbury man who was killed when a tree fell on his truck. Connecticut State Police say a tree also fell on a car on Brush Hill Road in New Fairfield, killing a 41-year-old woman. In Kunkletown, Pennsylvania, a man was killed when a tree fell on a vehicle near the town of Effort in the Poconos. An 11-year-old New York girl was killed when a large tree toppled onto the car she was in with her mother in Newburgh. Another woman was killed in the same town of Newburgh when a tree fell on her vehicle.

The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF0 tornado hit Newburgh, which is located in Orange County. Conditions were so bad with downed trees and damage to electrical infrastructure that the city closed all roads Tuesday evening until further notice.

Saugerties, New York, got hit with an EF1 tornado and a microburst. Two tornadoes were also confirmed in Putnam County, New York – an EF1 near Patterson and an EF2 near Kent. A macroburst toppled hundreds of trees in Dutchess County, New York. Preliminary results indicate that an EF1 tornado struck north of Honesdale in Wayne County, Pennsylvania, as well.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in Putnam, Dutchess, Orange and Sullivan counties.

The storms downed trees and power lines across the region and lightning strikes led to structure fires in New Jersey and Massachusetts. As of Wednesday night, nearly 300,000 customers remained without power in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said it could be days before power is restored to everyone in the state.

Travel delays were reported, including several suspensions at New York’s Grand Central Terminal. Damage to train tracks from severe weather forced the closure of MARC’s Brunswick Line service in Maryland. The line will reopen on Thursday, officials told news outlets.

The severe storms have ended, but more rain is expected in the region. The biggest threat for flooding will be from Virginia to southern New Jersey, where 4 to 8 inches of rain could fall with localized heavier amounts possible.

Much of the East will see rain in the next three days. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will fuel downpours that result in rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches across other parts of the Southeast and eventually into the Northeast. Look at the weird clouds floating in the sky of Chicago:

Was it all engineered?

A couple of days ago over 3 inches of hail fell in Colorado and snowplows were dispatched to clear the roads.

3 Things You Must Remember While You Wait for the End Times

JACK GRAHAM

(jplenio / pixabay)

It can be difficult to remember the security of our eternity when we are facing the ugly realities of a sinful and fallen world. In a time when human life is devalued, when virtue is weakened or even shamed, and when our God is continually shoved out of a culture that constantly claims to esteem love above everything else, it is tempting for God's people to fall into discouragement and even despair.

We are feeling the pains the world felt during the 400 years between the Old and New Testaments when God's guiding voice seemed silent. We're seeing the foundations of our nation's spiritual heritage broken down and threatened. How are we to cope without shrinking away into our faith with fear?

Here are three exhortations that I pray will keep you grounded, joyful and hopeful in a quickly dimming world.

We Must Not Dismay

This means we should not sink into hopelessness and stagnancy as a result of challenges to our faith. Dismay gives the powers of darkness an easier job. Do not relent! Take the challenge as a sacred calling, and be fueled with the joy of the Lord, which will be your strength.

In fact, we must remember the overwhelming joy that the birth of Christ brought to earth. Recall what the angel told the frightened shepherds that very night: "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people" (Luke 2:10). Note, "all the people." It is not only our blessing and privilege to be recipients of this joy, but to also be joy-bringers and heralds of hope to others, just as the angel that blessed night proclaimed.

Remember, God Has Not Left Us

And never will leave us. Jesus is Immanuel, "God with us," and the Bible has made it clear that He is coming back again (Heb. 9:28). The world is aching for Christ, and we have an ordained duty to bring His love and truth to those around us while we wait for His triumphant return.

We Must Rejoice
Even when the world seems to be falling apart, we have a steadfast and unshakable foundation in our victorious God. And when He does come again, heaven and earth will be reconciled in a beautiful and holy display of our Creator's power. Even in the darkest days, when evil seems to reign, remember God still sits on His throne.

We have a Savior who is victorious over the grave and was not contained by the tomb. While we await His return, let us remind others of this gospel, this Good News. Let us live with faith, conviction and courage even in the fiery world around us.

All around us, people are broken by their sin and beaten down by their lives, and they need a loving Christian to tell them about the One who died and rose and is coming again.

Will you be that Christian?

Alleged shooter at Texas high school spared people he liked, court document says

By Jason Hanna, Dakin Andone, Keith Allen and Steve Almasy, CNN

Updated 0653 GMT (1453 HKT) May 19, 2018

(CNN)The teenager who allegedly used a shotgun and a revolver to kill 10 people and wound 10 others at a Texas high school Friday admitted he didn't shoot people he liked and meant to kill the ones he did target, a probable cause affidavit says.

Suspect Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, has cooperated with police, said Galveston County Magistrate Mark Henry said. Henry denied bail for the student, who is accused of capital murder of multiple people and aggravated assault on a public servant.
Students at Santa Fe High School, not far from Houston in southeastern Texas, scrambled for safety after they heard shots just after class began Friday morning. Nine students and one teacher were killed, a law enforcement official told CNN.
Pagourtzis said little during a video court appearance, answering "Yes, sir" when asked whether he wanted a court-appointed attorney. He was not asked to enter a plea.
The probable cause affidavit says he told an investigator he spared people he liked because he wanted his story told.
Photo of Dimitrios Pagourtzis from the Galveston County Sheriff's Office.
The alleged shooter used a shotgun and a .38 revolver that were legally owned by his father, Gov. Greg Abbott told reporters. Two school resource officers were on the campus and confronted the shooter "early on in the process," Abbott said.

    Latest developments

    • A student who survived being shot in the head tweeted: "I'm so greatful and blessed that god spared me today." Rome Shubert showed CNN affiliate KTRK where a bullet went in the back of his head and came out near his left ear.
    • A Pakistani exchange student, Sabika Sheikh, was killed, the country's embassy in Washington said.
    • Substitute teacher Cynthia Tisdale was also killed, her family said.
    • One classmate told CNN the alleged shooter was "really quiet and he wore like a trench coat almost every day."
    • Abbott said investigators have found journals on a computer and cell phone owned by the suspect.
    • The governor offered his sympathies to the victims then called for lawmakers and others to come together to prevent more tragedies. "We need to do more than just pray for the victims and their families. It's time in Texas that we take action to step up and make sure this tragedy is never repeated ever again."
    • Henry, the Galveston County magistrate, said the suspect told investigators he acted alone.
    • Retired Houston Police officer John Barnes was one of the people shot at Santa Fe High School, a hospital official said. Houston's police chief tweeted that he visited the hospital where Barnes was being treated and that Barnes was "hanging in there." The officer was working as a Santa Fe officer, a police union official tweeted.

    Early morning attack

Gunfire erupted at the school, about 20 miles outside Galveston, not long after classes began around 7:30 a.m. CT, officials said. Authorities later found explosive devices -- including pipe bombs and pressure cookers -- in and near the school, a law enforcement official said.
Henry told reporters that the suspect had devices but none was functional. One was a pressure cooker with an alarm clock and nails, but no explosive material. There was also an unlit Molotov cocktail found, he said.
A second person -- also believed to be a student -- has been detained as well, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said earlier.
This is the 22nd US school shooting since the beginning of the year, and the third instance in eight days in which a gunman was on a school campus.
Witnesses described students running from the school as they heard gunshots; they also described hearing an alarm at the school, though the sequence of events wasn't immediately clear.
Authorities found explosive devices in the high school and in adjacent areas, said Walter Braun, Santa Fe Independent School District police chief. It wasn't immediately clear if any had exploded.

Santa Fe High School junior Guadalupe Sanchez, 16, cries in the arms of her mother, Elida Sanchez, after reuniting with her at a meeting point at a nearby fitness center after Friday's shooting.

Because the devices were found, Braun urged people in the city of about 13,000 people to "not touch any items that look out of place, and call 911" if they see something suspicious.
Investigators Friday afternoon were searching a trailer where they believe the devices were assembled, a law enforcement source said.

Witness: Shooter fired gun in an art class

Daymon Rabon was in class when he heard a loud bang next door.
"We thought maybe someone was banging on the shop door or maybe something fell," the senior said. Rabon said he followed his teacher, who went to investigate.
They heard three more bangs and saw the shooter come out off of an art room.
"At this point we knew this was ... really happening to us," Rabon said.
They went back into their classroom and told others to help barricade the door.
Rabon said he heard more than a dozen shots.
"You could hear him getting closer," he said. "Everyone was crying, in complete tears, just in utter disbelief."
Rabon said he heard someone shooting back and they gave them some hope, but the shooting seemed right outside their door.
Victims were being treated at three hospitals, authorities said. Eight people went to Clear Lake Regional Medical in Webster, Texas; two patients were treated at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City; and four patients went to John Sealy University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. It is unclear whether they were all wounded or some were treated for other injuries.

Six of the eight patients at Clear Lake Regional were discharged by Friday afternoon.

Witnesses describe hearing an alarm as well as gunfire

Angelica Martinez, a 14-year-old student, told CNN she and her schoolmates were being evacuated at one point "like it's a fire drill."
"We were all standing (outside), but not even five minutes later, we started hearing gunshots," she said. "And then everybody starts running, but, like, the teachers are telling us to stay put, but we're all just running away."
"I didn't see anybody shooting, but like (the gunshots) were kind of spaced," Angelica said, adding she heard about four shots.
A witness who spoke to KTRK also said she heard an alarm. She didn't specify if that was before or after the gunfire she described in the art class.
She said she couldn't describe the shooter.
"I didn't look. I just ran," she said.
Another student, Dakota Shrader, told CNN affiliate KPRC that she heard gunshots only after hearing an alarm in the school.
"I was in the history hallway, and as soon as we heard the alarms, everybody just started leaving following the same procedure as ... (a) practice fire drill," Shrader said, breaking into tears. "And next thing you know, we just hear ... three gunshots, loud explosions, and all the teachers are telling us to run."
The high school has about 1,400 students, according to GreatSchools.org.

Houston police chief: 'I've hit rock bottom'

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo wrote an emotional post on Facebook late Friday evening saying he was "not ashamed to admit I've shed tears of sadness, pain and anger." Acevedo spoke directly to gun-rights enthusiasts in his post.
"I know some have strong feelings about gun rights, but I want you to know I've hit rock bottom and I am not interested in your views as it pertains to this issue," he said, adding he would "de-friend" anyone who posted anything about "guns aren't the problem" and "there's little we can do."
Acevedo said he would continue to speak up and "stand up for what my heart and my God commands me to do."
"I assure you it he hasn't instructed me that gun-rights are bestowed by him," he said.
Now, Acevedo said, was not the time for prayers, study or inaction.
"It's a time for prayers, action and the asking of God's forgiveness for our inaction (especially the elected officials that ran to the cameras today, acted in a solemn manner, called for prayers, and will once again do absolutely nothing)," he said.

President Trump: Mass shootings have been 'going on too long in our country'

President Donald Trump addressed the school shooting, saying that mass shootings have been "going on too long."
"Unfortunately, I have to begin by expressing our sadness and heartbreak over the deadly shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas," Trump said from the East Room of the White House. "This has been going on too long in our country. Too many years. Too many decades now."
Trump said federal authorities are coordinating with local officials.
"We grieve for the terrible loss of life and send our support to everyone affected by this absolutely horrific attack," Trump said.
Trump has ordered US flags at federal facilities be flown at half-staff.
