THE OCEAN FLOOR IS SINKING UNDER THE WATER WEIGHT FROM MELTING GLACIERS, AND IT’S AS BAD AS IT SOUNDS

So much extra water is being added into the world’s oceans from melting glaciers that the ocean floor is sinking underneath its increasing weight. This ocean floor deformation also means we have miscalculated just how much ocean levels are rising and the problem could be far worse than previously believed.

Over the past 20 years, ocean basins have sunk an average of 0.004 inches per year. This means that the ocean is 0.08 inches deeper than it was two decades ago. While this small fragment of an inch may not seem much, oceans cover 70 percent of our planet, making the problem bigger than it seems at an initial glance.

In a study published online in Geophysical Research Levels, researchers explain how they used a mathematical equation known as the elastic sea level equation to more accurately measure the ocean floor. This allowed them to see how much the bottom of the ocean floor has changed from 1993 to 2014. While they are not the first scientists to look at the ocean floor, this is the first time that researchers have taken into account how additional water from melted ice may have further stretched the ocean floor, LiveScience reported.

Rising sea levels will be especially dangerous for coastal towns and cities.JEFF J MITCHELL/GETTY IMAGES

The results show that the ocean is changing in ways that we previously did not realize and is sinking further into the earth’s crust. As a result, scientists have underestimated how much sea levels are rising by as much as 8 percent. The study concludes by emphasizing that future sea level measurement should take ocean floor deformation into account in order to more accurately understand how our oceans are changing.

All the water on the planet today is all the water that has ever existed on the planet, but not all water is in its liquid form. Recently, rising temperatures have caused much of the frozen water on the planet’s glaciers to melt and join the ocean as liquid. This mass melting ice rising sea levels, a problem whose consequences we’re already starting to see. The first to notice the repercussions of rising sea levels are those who live in coastal areas. Rising waters mean less land to live on. In addition, more water in the ocean means that ocean storms, such as hurricanes, have the potential to be stronger and more devastating, National Geographic reported.

Small coastal areas won’t be the only ones to disappear due to rising waters and if current estimates are correct, by 2100 the ocean will rise between 11 and 38 inches, a number that could mean that much of the U.S. east coast will be covered in water,National Geographic reported.

OIL AND WATER

Trump and Zinke go all in on offshore drilling.

On Thursday, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke held a press conference to discuss the Department of the Interior’s intentions for drilling rights in American-controlled waters. In brief: The Arctic, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and possibly parts of the Pacific are pretty much all fair game now. The new policy would encompass “the largest number of lease sales ever proposed,” Zinke said.

It’s a direct take-back of the plan that the Obama administration finalized in November 2016. Those rules, which protected the Arctic and Atlantic seas from new drilling, were supposed to hold until 2022. But President Trump has long claimed the legal authority, and intention, to reverse it.

Conservation groups will almost certainly challenge this new draft plan in court. And a bipartisan group of local and state officials also oppose new drilling in some of these areas. In June, 14 House Republicans issued a joint letter opposing drilling off the Atlantic. Florida Governor Rick Scott joined the opposition Thursday, saying that his “top priority is to ensure that Florida’s natural resources are protected.”

Overall, more than 100 lawmakers — along with plenty of governors, attorneys general, and the U.S. Defense Department — oppose the plan.

Just last week, the Interior Department’s rollback of drilling safety regulations after the 2009 Deepwater Horizon spill cited their“unnecessary … burden” on industry.

Fear Mongering Intensifies: CDC to Teach US Public How to Prepare for Nuclear War

January 8, 2018 at 11:51 am

(ANTIMEDIA Op-ed) — Sometimes it feels as if the mainstream media works in concert with government agencies to manufacture a perpetual atmosphere of existential terror. Reminiscent of the color-coded alerts issued by the Homeland Security Department during the early years of the War on Terror, we now get daily updates of a feud between two world leaders boasting about the relative sizes of their nuclear buttons while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls for a public meeting to discuss nuclear fallout preparedness. The timing is extraordinary, but not unexpected in what Hunter S. Thompson called ‘the Kingdom of Fear.’

In a briefing ahead of the January 16th session, the CDC said:

While a nuclear detonation is unlikely, it would have devastating results and there would be limited time to take critical protection steps. Despite the fear surrounding such an event, planning and preparation can lessen deaths and illness.

The session will occur during the agency’s monthly Public Health Grand Rounds, a community symposium hosted by Atlanta’s CDC headquarters, and will feature talks entitled “Preparing for the Unthinkable” and “Roadmap to Radiation Preparedness.”

Despite North and South Korea holding talks for the first time in three years later this month, tensions have escalated between North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump. The tough talk between them started almost immediately after the brash billionaire insurgent took office. Trump, who felt previous presidents had tread too carefully with the rogue dictatorship, responded to Jong-un’s intercontinental ballistic missile tests by promising “fire and fury.”

The most recent exchange started when Jong-un stated:

The entire United States is within range of our nuclear weapons, a nuclear button is always on my desk. This is reality, not a threat. This year, we should focus on mass-producing nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles for operational deployment. These weapons will be used only if our society is threatened.

Trump, hearing that the only trigger for North Korea’s use of nuclear weapons was to be threatened, promptly threatened him with a tweet comparing the size of their buttons (which, of course, is a mischaracterization of official nuclear protocol):

Over the weekend, Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under both former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, said such talk is creating uncertainty that other superpowers, like Russia and China, can take exploit. He also said we’re closer to nuclear war with North Korea than we’ve ever been.

The communications director for the Public Health Grand Rounds, however, confirmed that the CDC’s nuclear safety meeting is not related to the recent rhetoric and was planned well in advance.

However, notice of the safety hearing follows Guam’s Homeland Security and Office of Civil Defenserelease of a two-page fact sheet describing what to do if a nuclear war begins. In December, Hawaii reinstated a monthly nuclear warning siren system test that hadn’t been used since the end of the Cold War.

The announcement of the CDC’s nuclear fallout safety meeting came with a photograph of a nuclear bomb blast.

President Trump on Saturday that he would “absolutely” be willing to speak to Jong-un over the phone if certain preconditions were met.

Election Fraud Exposed: Millions Of Dead Voted And Thousands Of Illegals In Critical Swing State

In many states the voter fraud is so rampant they have more people on their voter rolls than actual eligible voters in the state. Alaska, California, Colorado, Washington D.C., Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, and Michigan all had more voters on the rolls than eligible citizens. Considering not everyone eligible to vote registers this indicates an enormous amount of fraud being perpetrated in an effort to rig elections.

Non-citizens voting in our election is also a rampant issue. Virginia is not a hotbed for immigrants, illegal or otherwise, and it still saw 7,474 non-citizens cast ballots in the state. Because Virginia is a swing state, it is especially important that their election results are not tampered with by foreign nationals in our country trying to rig elections. California did not comply with the Presidential Commission, had they done so, it is likely the number of non-citizens voting in the golden state would have been of astronomical proportions.

The commission also found that over 45,000 people voting in the 2016 presidential election cast ballots in multiple districts, voting multiple times. People are district hoping to multiply their votes and the Democrats are unconcerned with the impact of this unscrupulous behavior and have blocked all attempts to purge the rolls of these bad actors.

Democrats often fight voter identification laws which would force citizens to provide ID before casting ballots in our elections. President Trump finds the policy of allowing people with no ID to vote to be absurd, stating in a Tweet, “As Americans, you need identification, sometimes in a very strong and accurate form, for almost everything you do…. Except when it comes to the most important thing, voting for the people that run your country, Push hard for Voter Identification.”

Democrats are fighting to keep the voting system in America virtually unregulated. While the evidence is clear that millions of ineligible voters are capable of casting ballots each year in our elections, Democrats have no interest in correcting this. They are protecting their illegal immigrant voters, their non-citizen voters, their dead voters, and their ineligible voters because they help keep the scales tilted in their favor. For Democrats winning elections is the most important thing, and if that means condoning, encouraging, and protecting criminals, so be it.

With DHS taking over the investigation, election officials will be subject to prosecution as will illegal voters. Democrats will also be unable to obstruct their efforts by filing frivolous lawsuits and blocking the release of crucial information requested. The law enforcement agency will have far more latitude on how it pursues the case moving forward, with far more resources and reach than the Presidential Commission had.

Democrats claim that voter fraud accusations are unfounded despite the mountains of evidence to the contrary. A thorough investigation into voter fraud will be carried out by DHS and the true impact of this epidemic will become clearer the deeper the department digs. Democrats stand to lose big if voter ID laws are implemented and their dead and ineligible voters become purged, so expect them to fight this investigation to the bitter end.

Thousands in California ordered to evacuate over threat of mudslides

, Jan 8, 2018, 6:21 PM ET

WATCHRecord-breaking cold expected to end for East Coast

Officials have ordered thousands of people who were affected by recent wildfires in Southern California to evacuate as an upcoming winter storm poses a threat for mudslides and flash floods.

Mandatory evacuations were issued for about 7,000 people in mountainous areas affected by the Thomas, Whitter, Sherpa and Rey fires, according to the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management. Another 23,000 people were under evacuation warnings, officials said.

The storm is the West Coast's first significant winter storm of the season, and heavy rain and strong winds are expected in the area through Tuesday, bringing "strong potential" for flash flooding and mud in areas where wildfires recently burned through, according to Santa Barbara County officials.

Down the coast, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has issued mandatory evacuations for several neighborhoods, including Kagel Canyon, Lopez Canyon and Little Tujunga Canyon, which were all affected by the Creek fire last month.

Flash flood watches are in effect from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara County, and a wind advisory is in effect for the San Francisco area, according to the National Weather Service.

The bulk of the rain in Southern California will fall early Tuesday and into the afternoon. The showers are expected to clear by Tuesday night.

Further east, a new storm system is set to bring snow, sleet and freezing rain to parts of the Midwest and East today, meteorologists said.

To the south, an icy mix could bring a glaze of ice to eastern Kentucky, Tennessee and northern Georgia.

In Atlanta, which typically avoids freezing weather, the National Weather Service said residents had begun to report “slick spots” in areas where light freezing rain began to fall earlier today. Total ice accumulations of less than one-tenth of an inch were predicted.

Parts of Interstate 75 were shut down in northern Georgia because of crashes and icy roads, which apparently contributed to a major pileup the Varnell Police Department tweeted about this morning.

The weather has caused airports to cancel and reschedule flights.

Major carriers like Delta, American and United offered waivers for passengers affected by the backlog.

The storm is not forecast to be a major one, but it could cause hazardous and difficult travel conditions in parts of the Midwest and East, the National Weather Service said.

ABC News' Jennifer Harrison, Julia Jacobo, Michael Kreisel and M.L. Nestel contributed to this report.
