Terrified shoppers escape mall building blaze by hanging out of windows as firefighters desperately battle inferno

Forty people have rushed to hospitals across Lima as the fire tore through the Nicolini shopping centre in the Las Malvinas district

A massive blaze has ripped through a shopping centre where scores of people are believed to be trapped inside according to reports.

Around 80 people have been pulled from the fire at the Nicolini shopping mall in the district of Las Malvinas in Lima, Peru, but it is understood more people are still inside.

Footage posted online shows thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the air as flames burst out of the building.

People can be seen climbing out of windows in a bid to escape the blaze in footage which has been posted online.

One witness reported seeing four people throwing wood out of the building to try and attract the attention of fire crews below.

Javi Herrera Alania, 23, and several others are trapped on the fifth floor of the building. He has been able to communicate by phone to his family.

Firefighters are working on the fourth floor in search of people trapped.

More than 230 firefighters are at the scene where the fire is a code 4 – and therefore "out of control".

A total of 35 people have been transferred to hospitals after being given oxygen at the scene.

The fire comes more than a week after the Grenfell Tower fire inferno in which at least 79 people are believed to have died.

That death toll is expected to rise as emergency services retrieve more bodies from the tower block in west London.

The Government and Kensington and Chelsea Council have both been criticised for their response to the tragedy.

Violent thunderstorms hit Germany, two people killed, one seriously injured
Posted by on

Violent thunderstorms hit Germany on Thursday, June 22, 2017, producing gale-force winds, heavyrain and large hail. The storms caused widespread damage and traffic chaos, killed two people and severely injured at least one person. Contrary to numerous media reports, there was no tornado ripping through the city of Hamburg yesterday.

The first set of storms marched through the country during the early morning hours, damaging power lines and rail tracks, thus forcing trains to be halted between Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Kiel, and Hanover. Regional train provider Metronom said its services in the northwest were also affected after storms downed trees onto the tracks in several places.

The storms also affected and temporarily closed some of the busiest road routes connecting Hamburg with Berlin, Hanover and Wolfsburg.

Deutsche Welle reported that some planes departing overnight from Berlin were grounded at both of the capital's airports amid heavy rain. Those stranded at Tegel and Schönefeld airport were given blankets and water, while camper beds were also set up. At Schönefeld Airport normal service was expected to resume at around 09:00 local time. However, a speaker for the airport warned of potential further delays and urged travelers to check the status of their flight before departing for the airport.

The fire department was called to help in 250 different incidents in and around the major port city of Hamburg, while the eastern city of Magdeburg lost power in some areas after it was hit by a severe downburst.

A severe downburst also hit Harburg County, near the city of Hamburg, at around 11:30 CET (13:30 UTC), causing considerable damage and sending media into a frenzy after one fireman said it 'looks like after a tornado.' Soon after that, local, national and international media started publishing one article after another saying that a tornado swept through Hamburg. But that's not what happened. Think about it... The alleged tornado ripped through the second largest city in Germany (population 1.7 million) just before noon, but nobody took one single image? It didn't sound right so we talked with a well-known meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann of KachelmannWetter.com who kindly explained what really happened.

By the end of the day, at least 2 people were killed and one person severely injured.

"A 50-year-old man was killed when his car was struck by a tree in the town of Uelzen in Lower Saxony. Meanwhile, an 83-year-old woman died at Gifhorn, also in Lower Saxony, after her car hit a tree that had been blown across the street in strong gales. A cyclist was also severely injured by another tree nearby as the atypical weather pattern hit the region," Deutsche Welle reported.

The storms have since moved east over Poland, Czechia, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. They are currently affecting Ukraine and Romania, on their way toward Moldova.

Saudi Arabia Issues New Ultimatum of 13 Demands for Qatar to Meet

As with the ultimatum, the new demands start by insisting Qatar must permanently shut down all state media outlets, especially the popular al-Jazeera network. They also demand Qatar close all diplomatic facilities in Iran, and agree to broadly limit future trade with Iran.

On top of the old demands, the new list includes the imposition of an unspecified fine that Qatar would have to pay to the Saudis and their allies for disagreeing with them publicly in the past, and also a pledge by Qatar to expel the Turkish military from their base on Qatari soil.

As with the previous ultimatum, this list is seen as infringing on Qatar’s basic national sovereignty on several very specific fronts, and while Kuwait willingly delivered the list to Qatar, it’s highly unlikely the Qatari government will accept it.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had warned that they wanted the list to be “reasonable,” and it’s highly unlikely the US will view this list as such, particularly the demand to expel Turkey, as it’s hard to imagine the US would view kicking out a NATO member from a base as a “reasonable” part of the GCC’s demands.

US gun laws: Colorado to arm teachers in classrooms

GETTY IMAGES

School staff in Colorado are taking part in training to carry concealed weapons in classes

Teachers are being trained to carry guns in classrooms in Colorado in order to protect children as part of a scheme motivated by a school massacre in 2012.

The three-day course, which consists of firearms and medical training, was launched on Tuesday in Weld County.

Seventeen members of staff who "would like to be considered armed first responders" have so far taken part.

The pilot programme will allow volunteers to enter schools with guns under US "concealed carry" laws.

Teachers were taken to a shooting range in Weld County, near Denver, where they were tested on their abilities with weapons.

The course, provided by the Faculty Administrator Safety Training and Emergency Response group (Faster), was set up by parents, law enforcement officers and medical experts who believe that US schools are a "soft target" for violence. The group refers to schools as "victim zones".

Faster's aim, it says, is not to replace police or security services, but to "allow teachers, administrators, and other personnel to stop school violence rapidly" and to "administer medical aid where necessary".

The group was set up following the Sandy Hook shooting massacre in December 2012, in which a rifle-wielding man killed 26 people, mostly young children, at a Connecticut primary school.

The Sandy Hook school shooting led to protests by parents and teachers for stricter gun laws

But the move has angered campaign groups such as Safe Campus Colorado, which encourages its supporters to petition local authorities to help keep guns out of school.

"We believe concealed guns on Colorado's great university, college and community college campuses threaten the safety of students, faculty, staff and administrators," the group says on its website.

Safe Campus Colorado was set up by political activist Ken Toltz, who said in a statement to Colorado's 9 News channel that the move to train staff in the use of guns on campus was detrimental to the safety of both students and teachers.

"The dangers of adding guns to a school environment are dramatically increased by allowing loaded lethal weapons into a school environment on a daily basis," he said.

How does Faster work?

A selected school will ask staff to volunteer for training "in armed response" and "crisis management".

The school will then apply for training with Faster, a non-profit group that relies on charitable contributions, which will provide tuition for free.

Those chosen to participate attend an intensive course over three days with law enforcement personnel experienced in "active shooter situations". They will also be "tested physically and mentally".

The course not only teaches those enrolled to use firearms effectively against any threat, but also how to respond to injuries and provide medical assistance while awaiting emergency services.

An Ohio law issued in 2013 permits schools in the US state to arm employees "if that teacher is required to, in essence, become a security guard".

BRIEFLY

Stuff that matters

LAKE BLOOMER

The Great Lakes are already grimy. Trump wants to zero out cleanup funding.

President Trump’s proposed budget suggests axing $300 million in federal dollars for the Great Lakes. Yet, a new report from the EPA and its Canadian counterparts found that the lakes — Erie, Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Ontario — aren’t doing so hot.

The spread of invasive species and algal blooms continues to degrade water quality and threaten lake ecosystems, particularly in Lake Erie. Algae can hamper commercial fishing and recreation as well.

But hey, some good news: As chemical bans take effect, the amount of toxins in the waters is improving.

At a hearing last week on the EPA’s budget, Administrator Scott Pruitt faced tough reception about the Great Lakes cuts from both sides of the aisle — even as he defended the administration’s math. “I believe we can fulfill the mission of our agency with a trim budget,” Pruitt said. “We are committed to working with all states in that region to ensure water quality standards are advanced and protected.”

Good luck with that.
