US war fleet within ‘STRIKE RANGE’ of North Korea, ready for WW3

A US “war fleet” is within “striking distance” of North Korea.

An “armada” of American warships – led by the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson – is now within range of the Hermit Kingdom.

Donald Trump sent the Carl Vinson, guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain and guided-missile destroyers USS Michael Murphy and USS Wayne E Meyer to stop Kim Jong-un testing a new nuclear weapon or ballistic missile.

Admiral Harry Harris

US Navy Admiral Harry Harris, the top US Pacific commander, said the group was standing by “in strike range and power projection range of North Korea if called upon to do that.”

The fleet practiced for war with North Korea with a series of military drills yesterday.

The Donald boasted the US was sending an “armada” of ships to sort out Crazy Kim earlier this month.

He said: “We are sending an armada. Very powerful.”

But he was left red-faced when the near Indonesia.

Admiral Harris has taken the blame for the blunder.

He told Congress: “I’ll take the hit for it.

“Where I failed was to communicate that adequately to the press and the media, so that’s all on me.”

ARAB MEDIA CLAIMS ISRAELI AIRSTRIKE HIT DAMASCUS AIRPORT

BYREUTERS

According to Syrian Rebel forces, multiple dawn strikes hit an ammunition depot complex near Damascus airport used by Iranian-backed forces. Intelligence Minister says attack matches Israel's policy.

An Israeli strike on Thursday hit an arms supply hub operated by the Lebanese Hezbollah group near Damascus airport where regular supplies of weapons from Tehran are sent by commercial and military cargo planes, a regional intelligence source said.

The depot handles a significant amount of weapons that Tehran, a major regional ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, sends regularly by air, the source who requested anonymity said, without giving further details.

The source said the arms depot gets a major part of the weapons supplied to an array of Iranian backed militias, led by Hezbollah, which have thousands of fighters engaged in some of the toughest fronts against Syrian rebels.
A spokeswoman for the Israeli military, asked if Israel had been involved in carrying out air strikes targeting Damascus airport, said: "We can't comment on such reports."

Jerusalem has a policy of neither confirming or denying strikes attributed to it in Syria, but in an interview to Israeli news site Walla, Israel's Intelligence Affairs Minister Yisrael Katz said the attack matched Israel's Policy of not allowing sophisticated weapons to reach Hezbollah.

The strike came just days after Al Jazeera reported that the IDF struck a base belonging to a pro-Syrian militia near Quneitra.

In a statement released by the National Defense Forces, a pro-regime militia, the alleged strike targeted the Naba Fawar base, killing three fighters and wounding two others.

On Tuesday a senior IDF officer revealed new information regarding the most serious incident to take place between Israel and Syria in years. On March 17, IAF jets were targeted by Syrian missiles, an attack the IDF responded to immediately.

However, the senior officer revealed that not only did the IDF launch an Arrow missile interceptor to shoot down the Syrian missile, it also destroyed 100 Syrian missiles that were on their way to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

According to the officer, this action against the Syrian regime was not the first time Israel has operated against its northern neighbor in recent years. Israel usually refrains from publicly discussing air strikes it reportedly carried out in Syria, but it confirmed the one that took place on March 17.

Joy Bernard and Anna Ahronheim contributed to this report.

Elon Musk’s Plan to Save Humanity from the Artificial Intelligence Apocalypse

The concept of a brain-machine interface (BMI) remained in the realm of science fiction until fairly recently. Now there are multiple private endeavors and even a DARPA-led coalition. Currently, there are three early BMI models: motor cortex stimulation, artificial ears and eyes, and deep brain stimulation.

“We are aiming to bring something to market that helps with certain severe brain injuries (stroke, cancer lesion, congenital) in about four years,” Musk stated.

But these are just the earliest manifestations of what Musk believes will soon be a thriving industry. Tim Urban’s post at Wait But Why (make sure you have a head-scratching hour before you read) fleshed out some of the grittier details of what he basically refers to as the next phase of intelligent life on earth: the Wizard Era.

Musk envisions a world in which humans are outfitted with micro-sized “neural lace” technology. When it reaches its full potential, the effects will be nothing short of mind-blowing. We will be able to control physical objects with our thoughts, have conversations between minds with no words, and literally live other people’s experiences, including all forms of physical activity. Think of it as an amalgam of virtual reality and augmented reality but without any physical devices and telepathically controlled, a new “digital tertiary” layer of the brain.

Musk believes there will be therapeutic benefits, as well. By recoding their neural patterns, people will be able to better manage psychiatric and emotional problems, heighten their sensory perceptions, and vastly augment their knowledge base with a cloud-based memory and knowledge storage. With such advanced emotional communication, there will be an opportunity to instill a greater sense of empathy in people, as they will actually experience what it feels like to be someone else.

But with great promise comes great peril. Musk acknowledges there are risks involved, such as mind hacking, trolling, and surveillance. All the normal destructive tendencies of humans may follow us up the ladder. As for as people reading our thoughts, though, Musk says not to worry:

People won’t be able to read your thoughts—you would have to will it. If you don’t will it, it doesn’t happen. Just like if you don’t will your mouth to talk, it doesn’t talk.

Musk believes that with OpenAI, his open source non-profit artificial intelligence research company, he can democratize AI technology. Combined with NeuraLink, he believes this will lessen the existential risk posed by superintelligent machines by allowing us to keep up with the pace of augmentation.

Will humans embrace becoming machines? Musk, echoing futurist Ray Kurzweil, thinks the symbiosis will be natural, and that it has already started:

“The thing that people, I think, don’t appreciate right now is that they are already a cyborg. You’re already a different creature than you would have been twenty years ago, or even ten years ago. You’re already a different creature. You can see this when they do surveys of like, ‘How long do you want to be away from your phone?’ and—particularly if you’re a teenager or in your 20s—even a day hurts. If you leave your phone behind, it’s like missing limb syndrome. I think people—they’re already kind of merged with their phone and their laptop and their applications and everything.”

There will be plenty of skeptics who believe this kind of technology is impossible, or that it won’t solve basic underlying problems with human civilization. But if humans are hardwired to be the way they are, if nature has coded them to have certain instincts and truths, perhaps they can be rewired and recoded in a way that frees them from biology. It certainly seems at least possible that a brain-machine interface could be the game-changing paradigm shift that allows humans to finally understand one another and achieve communion. That’s when the real advancement can begin.

Russian Officials Say U.S. Global Missile Defense Could Lead to Nuclear War in Europe

Tom O’Connor

Top Russian officials have issued public warnings about what they see as risks associated with the U.S.'s extensive missile defense system in Europe. The officials, from Russia's political and military elite, said Washington's actions could increase the likelihood of nuclear conflict.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told attendees of the Moscow Conference on International Security on Wednesday that the U.S.'s ballistic missile defense system, which includes a sophisticated network of land, air and sea assets, is "a serious obstacle on the way of consolidation of political stability." Russia and the Western military alliance NATO, which hosts U.S. missile defense installations, have accused each other of aggressively expanding their respective interests in Europe, and both have undergone massive military buildups along Europe's tense borders. Moscow claims the U.S.'s missile defense system could encourage Washington to pursue unilateral action through nuclear force.

"The anti-missile umbrella may increase the illusion of invulnerability and impunity and lead to temptation of taking unilateral steps in the resolution of global and regional problems, including the reduction of threshold of nuclear weapons use," Lavrov said, according to the official TASS Russian News Agency.

The Missile Defense Agency conducts the first intercept flight test of a land-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense weapon system from the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Test Complex in Kauai, Hawaii, December 10, 2015. Aegis installations on land and at sea have become a crucial part of the U.S.' global missile defense system in Europe, something Russia has said undermines its national security. Later at the same conference, Russian Lieutenant General Viktor Poznikhir, first deputy chief of the General Staff's Main Operational Department, said computer simulations showed the European leg of the U.S.'s global missile shield was aimed at Russia and China, presenting a serious threat to Moscow's national security. He also said such sprawling weapons systems could be seen as a shield to allow the U.S. to launch an unexpected nuclear attack against Russia.

The presence of U.S. missile defense bases in Europe, missile defense vessels in seas and oceans close to Russia creates a powerful covert strike component for conducting a sudden nuclear missile strike against the Russian Federation," Poznikhir said, according to Russia's state-run Sputnik News.

In response to Poznikhir's speech, Frants Klintsevich, who is head of the defense and security committee in Moscow's upper house of parliament, took to social media to expand on the lieutenant general's claims. Klintsevich had previously said that the U.K. would "literally be wiped off the face of the Earth" if it attempted to conduct a pre-emptive nuclear strike, and he wrote Thursday that Poznikhir's words were meant to be heard by the international community, the U.S. and Russian citizens, whom Klintsevich said "have nothing to fear" because "the situation is under control."

"At this very moment, the most loyal guarantee for the preservation of peace is our ability in the most severe way to respond to possible aggression," Klintsevich wrote in a Facebook post.

According the U.S.'s most recently completed Nuclear Posture Review, in 2010, "the fundamental role of U.S. nuclear weapons is to deter nuclear attack on the United States, our allies and partners," and such weapons are to be used only "in extreme circumstances to defend the vital interests of the United States, our allies and partners." The U.S. has not adopted a "no-first-use" policy, meaning Washington would be willing to launch a pre-emptive nuclear attack if the U.S. or its allies were perceived to be at risk of a nuclear attack. Earlier this month, the Pentagon announced the beginning of the next Nuclear Posture Review under the administration of President Donald Trump, who has expressed support for an expanded nuclear force.

Russia, which has also indicated it would seek to increase its nuclear capabilities, also maintains a "launch-under-attack" policy, but extends this doctrine to severe threats by non-nuclear weapon attacks as well. According to the Military Doctrine of Russia, last updated in 2014, Russia reserves "the right to use nuclear weapons in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons of mass destruction against it and/or its allies, as well as in the event of aggression against the Russian Federation with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is in jeopardy."
