Urgent measures needed to counter growing N. Korean SLBM threat

The Yomiuri Shimbun

North Korea’s latest firing of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) indicates that Pyongyang’s military threat is growing further. The international community must work together to speed up efforts to halt the country’s provocations.

The U.N. Security Council has started considering issuing a statement to condemn North Korea’s SLBM test launch toward the Sea of Japan.

It is vital for the UNSC to swiftly send a strong message to North Korea, which has repeatedly conducted nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches in violation of U.N. sanctions resolutions.

The regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un opposes the planned deployment of the United States’ state-of-the-art Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system in South Korea. The SLBM launch, which was conducted during a U.S.-South Korean joint military exercise, was apparently intended to shake Japan, the United States and South Korea by demonstrating North Korea’s ability to carry out a surprise attack.

Kim, chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea, watched the test-firing and declared that the SLBM launch proved his country “joined the front rank of military powers fully equipped with nuclear attack capabilities,” according to the Korean Central News Agency. He also ordered increased efforts to develop nuclear weapons and ways to deliver them, the KCNA reported.

If North Korea successfully deploys an SLBM equipped with a miniaturized nuclear warhead for combat use, it would allow the country to conduct nuclear attacks in various different ways. This is a source of grave concern that could undermine regional stability.

Significant improvements

Signs of an impending SLBM firing are difficult to detect. Even if North Korean military forces on land were destroyed, SLBMs could enable the country to retaliate from a submarine.

Since North Korea test-fired the missile in waters in spring last year, its SLBM capability has improved significantly.

According to the South Korean military, the latest SLBM flew about 500 kilometers. The missile’s range could reach 2,000 kilometers. Initially, it was expected to take two or three years for North Korea to be able to deploy SLBMs for combat use, but some observers say the deployment could happen earlier. Japan, the United States and South Korea must urgently strengthen their deterrence capability.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye has described Kim as “unpredictable” and expressed strong concern, saying North Korea’s “nuclear and missile threats” are becoming a reality.

Park’s recent remarks deserve attention. She said Kim could conduct further provocations to tighten his grip as the country’s elite class is showing “signs of cracks.”

The remarks came after a series of defections by North Korean diplomats. Earlier this month, a minister at the North Korean Embassy in London defected to South Korea.

In April, North Koreans working at a “North Korean-run restaurant” in China defected, in a rare group move.

While the “Kim dynasty” dictatorship has become increasingly isolated in the international community, North Korea can no longer cover up growing discontent among its people.

10,000th Syrian refugee to reach U.S. this week

AMMAN, Jordan - The U.S. will reach its target this week of taking in 10,000Syrian warrefugees in a year-old resettlement program, the U.S. ambassador to Jordan said Sunday, after meeting families headed to California and Virginia.

The resettlement program has emerged as an issue in the U.S. presidential campaign, with Republican nominee Donald Trump alleging displaced Syrians pose a potential security threat.

Wells said the target of resettling 10,000 Syrian refugees in the U.S. in the 2016 fiscal year will be reached Monday, as several hundred Syrians depart from Jordan over 24 hours.“Refugees are the most thoroughly screened category of travelers to the United States, and Syrian refugees are subject to even greater scrutiny,” she said.

The Jouriyeh family, which attended Sunday’s short ceremony, is headed to San Diego, California.

Nadim Fawzi Jouriyeh, 49, a former construction worker from the war-ravaged Syrian city of Homs, said he feels “fear and joy, fear of the unknown and our new lives, but great joy for our children’s lives and future.”

The resettlement program focuses on the most vulnerable refugees, including those who were subjected to violence or torture or are sick.Jouriyeh, who suffers from heart problems, will be traveling with his wife, Rajaa, 42, and their four children. Their oldest son, 14-year-old Mohammed, said he is eager to sign up for school in San Diego and hopes to study medicine one day.

Close to 5 million Syrians have fled civil war since 2011. Most struggle to survive in tough conditions in neighboring countries, including Jordan, which hosts close to 660,000 Syrian refugees.

Only a small percentage of Syrian refugees have been resettled to third countries. Instead, donor countries are trying to invest more in job creation and education for refugees in regional host countries to encourage them to stay there instead of moving onward, including to Europe.

Wells said the U.S. has taken in more refugees from around the world over the years than all other nations combined.

Germany urges citizens to stockpile food and water to prepare for the implosion of Europe

Date:

It’s tough to deny it at this point — the impending collapse of societies all across the world is coming sooner than we would care to admit.

With each passing day, new evidence arrives to back up the belief that rising tensions, religious extremism, global warfare and political corruption will inevitably lead to the world being completely destroyed. It may sound like a crazy conspiracy theory to some, but if you analyze the evidence with an open mind, there are a lot of warning signs available.

Caroline Copley of Yahoo reports, “Germany is currently on high alert after two Islamist attacks and a shooting rampage by a mentally unstable teenager last month. Berlin announced measures earlier this month to spend considerably more on its police and security forces and to create a special unit to counter cyber crime and terrorism.”Now there’s even more proof to back up this belief, as Germany is urging its citizens to prepare themselves for such an event by stockpiling food and water in expectation of Europe completely imploding.

It’s difficult to blame them, either. Europe is a complete mess at the moment thanks to the growing amount of Islamic extremists invading their countries. From France to Belgium and everywhere in between, it seems as though the entire continent of Europe is under attack by these extremists.

Overt political correctness has once again proven itself to be extremely dangerous, due to the fact that federal governments are afraid to address real, dangerous issues threatening the lives of their citizens out of fear that they’ll be labeled racist, Islamophobic, or otherwise bigoted.

If the globalists have their way, we’re all in serious trouble. They’ve already started taking away individual freedoms, and now they’ve set their sights on much bigger goals. If you want to survive, you best be prepared for anything they can throw at you — because it’s very clear that they’re trying to eliminate us all.

Central Italy rocked by new 4.4 aftershock following deadly earthquake

A new 4.4-magnitude aftershock with a depth of about 9 km has rattled the region not far from the town of Arquata del Tronto in central Italy, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported. The area suffered a deadly earthquake four days ago.

The aftershock’s center is located nearly 7 km from Arquata del Tronto. The tremor was felt in Rome, situated more than 150 kilometers south of the town, according to local broadcaster RaiNews24.

A powerful earthquake hit central Italy on Wednesday night, leaving at least 290 people dead with the death toll still rising.

A number of small towns and villages were reduced to rubble. Rescue teams dug deep underneath the rubble in the search for possible survivors. Strong tremors were felt in the Italian capital on Wednesday night as well.

As many as 2,500 people have lost their homes to the earthquake, according to the data released by the Italian civil defense authorities.

More than 1,800 aftershocks have rocked the region since Wednesday’s quake with Saturday night being the first one without any major tremors.

Rescue operations are still in progress.

Italian authorities have launched a criminal investigation to establish the reasons why some of the buildings destroyed in Wednesday’s deadly earthquake collapsed so easily, though were said to have been built in compliance with high anti-seismic standards.

Investigators are focusing not only on recently constructed or renovated public buildings, but also private houses that could have been modified by their owners against existing building codes and anti-seismic engineering regulations.

“Everyone suspects such a tragedy was not just a question of misfortunes,” the chief prosecutor in the provincial capital of Rieti, north of Rome, heading the investigation, Giuseppe Saieva, said, according to local media. “We have to check if there was also human responsibility.”

The probe is paying special attention to two destroyed buildings that were recently restored – a bell tower in Accumoli that fell on a nearby home and killed a family and the Romolo Capranica school in Amatrice that was supposedly quake-proof.

In 2012 a consortium of builders signed a €700,000 contract with the town council to revamp the school in accordance with anti-earthquake safety standards, judicial sources reported.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis promised to pay a visit to the central Italian towns hit by the earthquake. At a Sunday prayer in Rome the pope stressed “how important solidarity is in order to overcome such painful trials.”

“Dear brothers and sisters,” he said. “I hope to come to see you as soon as possible, to bring you in person the comfort of the faith, the embrace of a father and a brother, and the support of Christian hope.”
