Malnutrition brings a terrible disease to children in Niger

Zinder (Niger) (AFP) - Mourdja's nose has been eaten away, like one lip and part of her upper gum, leaving the 13-year-old girl atrociously disfigured by noma, a disease that thrives on malnutrition.

"It was better before," the teenager says shyly and simply in the arid heartland of Niger, one of the world's poorest nations, clearly ill at ease and fiddling with her bracelets.

Mourdja can no longer look people in the eye, her face ravaged by the polymicrobial infection, which began by making her inflamed gums bleed. Just three days later, rapid tissue damage stole her beauty -- along with her childhood.

"The problem is that this is a very fast-acting disease," says nurse Fati Badamasi, who works for the Swiss NGO Sentinelles, active in Niger since 1992.

"The necrosis takes hold in 72 hours. If the patient comes to us with a blackish patch (on the face) it's already too late."

Ali Adah, who oversees the charity's work in the country on the southern edge of the Sahara, speaks of the fearful stench of noma, which "smells of decay, like a corpse".

"When I come to the office and we have a new case, I smell it straight away," he says.

- 'Disease born of poverty' -

Mourdja's flesh gave off that odour after she caught the infection sometimes called oro-facial gangrene, which can break out where food is short and lacks key vitamins and water is polluted.

Noma also strikes when natural immunity is at its lowest.

The teenager comes from a "very poor" family in the central Tahoua province, according to Aboubakar Moussa Mato, a social worker with Sentinelles. She lives with her parents and "about 10 brothers and sisters" in a straw hut "with no water or electricity".

"Noma is caused by malnutrition and a lack of hygiene," nurse Badamasi says. "It is a disease born of poverty. Well, in Niger there is plenty of poverty."

Niger is prone to food crises and holds the lowest place on the comprehensive Human Development Index drawn up each year by the United Nations Development Programme.

The birth rate is nonetheless a record 7.6 babies per woman, according to the UN, but in June 2014 more than 15 percent of children under five were famished. Between 4,000 and 6,000 infants die of malnutrition each year.

Most African countries have faced noma, like Laos in Asia and some South American nations, but Niger accounts for a large part of the 140,000 to 180,000 people infected every year worldwide, according to the UN World Health Organization, whose last complete data dates from 1998.

The last cases in Europe were recorded during the Second World War in Nazi concentration camps where Allied troops saw the appalling conditions first-hand towards the end of the conflict, says WHO expert Benoit Varenne. "That gives an idea of the kind of infection we're up against."

Reliable noma statistics for Niger are unavailable, but "90 percent of children die before receiving basic care", says Ibrahim Hamadou, who coordinates the National Programme Against Disease. "That means we only know the remaining 10 percent."

- 'Half a miracle' -

With help from Sentinelles, Mourdja will soon be flown to Geneva, where surgeons will rebuild her nose and her mouth. The girl will spend between six months to a year in the Swiss lakeside city for operations and reeducation before coming home.

Seymi, who lost the whole left side of his face to noma, has already been to Switzerland. Skin and muscle tissue lifted close to his thorax has been grafted over a gaping wound, but the boy remains badly disfigured. The disease ate away one of his eyes.

"What we do is half a miracle, but it's a very long way from perfect," says Brigitte Pittet, a surgeon and professor in the Geneva University Hospitals public sector group.

"It is very complex to reconstruct a nose in three dimensions with mucous membranes, the oral walls, the lips," Pittet adds, though there have been improvements down the years. Surgery practised on less badly affected children leaves hardly any trace of the damage.

Operations are extremely expensive and Niger's authorities are counting on a preventive information campaign and antibiotics.

"We show mothers frightful pictures to shock them" and incite them to take infected children for the swiftest possible care, Hamadou, a physician, says. "When noma is detected early enough, the results are spectacular."

This method works. Thanks to a rapid response, about 30 children treated at the end of May at Sentinelle's centre in the southern town of Zinder suffered no more than inflammations of the gums. But peaks of noma are expected with the coming rainy season.

$1 Trillion Lawsuit Filed For Sandy Hook False Flag
Posted on July 3, 2015 by Sean Adl-Tabatabai in Bizarre

A filmmaker has decided to launch a $1 trillion dollar lawsuit against various big media companies over their Sandy Hook massacre coverage.

William Brandon Shanley has said that he has compelling evidence that suggests that no children or teachers died at Sandy Hook, and that the whole operation was a staged false flag, designed to frighten the public.

Redflagnews.com reports:

Here is Mr. Shanley’s Statement:

“After exhaustive research, the good news is that overwhelming evidence reveals that no children or teachers died at Sandy Hook two years ago. For relief, I have filed lawsuits against the media in US District Court in New Haven for Fraud and Terrorism. Here is an example of our abundant evidence, Exhibit D: The Connecticut State Police dash cams record no evacuation of children from school at critical moments … Smoking Gun evidence no children died at Sandy Hook.”

Mr. Shanley is the producer of The Made-for-TV Election starring Martin Sheen that analyzed media coverage in the tectonic Carter-Reagan election of 1980. He is also the author of books on quantum physics, including Alice and the Quantum Cat (2011). Dr. James Fetzer, whose 35 articles on Sandy Hook for Veteran’s Today qualify him for the highest investigative journalism awards, and School Safety Consultant, Wolfgang Halbig, whose investigative expertise as a former Florida State Police officer, and loving attention as a former principal, makes this case’s particulars comprehensible to all, will be called as expert witnesses.

Mr. Shanley’s Complaint states, in part:

Defendants entered in a multi-year conspiracy, meeting in groups separately and together, to commit fraud and terrorism, i.e., to brainwash the public into thinking a lone gunman drill known as the “Sandy Hook Massacre” was real, when in fact it was a staged FEMA National Level Exercise Event that redirected government resources to terrorize the public. These crimes were undertaken with the intent of subverting the US Constitution and to affect national, state and local laws. This fraud involved lying to the public, faking news, publishing one-sided news reports, censoring reality, suppressing facts, and deliberately skewing the news to shift public perceptions.

The true costs of this breach of integrity and trust to society are unfathomable. Instead of fulfilling their Constitutional Role as the People’s Surrogates and being honest brokers of information, the Plaintiff will show how the men and women who dominate the TV news industry in the United States broke laws, besmirched the First Amendment, their Constitutional role as government watchdogs, and forfeited the right to report the news, and thereby profit from news production and distribution. The sine qua non of journalism is the search for truth. Our Fourth Estate chose a different path. Punitive damages of one year’s annual revenue from each Defendant are being sought to establish a News Trust, that will free journalism and restore trust and integrity to our communications sources. A democracy cannot survive this tyranny over human consciousness.

The New York Times, the Associated Press, the Hartford Courant, and the Newtown Bee are being sued for 10 billion usd, punitive damages, in a separate Complaint.

Case Name: Shanley v. Smith et alCase Number: 3:14-cv-01881-JAM

Filer: William Brandon Shanley

Mass TV and wire service news media are being sued for 1 trillion usd, punitive damages.

Shanley v. O’Prey et alCase Number: 3:14-cv-01929-JAM

Filer: William Brandon Shanley

A Drone's Eye View Of The Massive Numbers Behind The Greek "No" Vote

Tyler Durden's picture

Tens of thousands of Greeks flooded the streets of central Athens on Friday evening ahead of Sunday's referendum.

Both the "yes" crowd and the "no" crowd were out in force with the former camped out in front of Olympic stadium and the latter in front of Parliament. Each rally boasted participation of more than 20,000 people according to local police.

“I call you to say again a big proud ‘no’ to ultimatums on Sunday,” PM Alex Tsipras shouted, in a speech to the "No" supports. "We can also say it in German: Nein, Frau Merkel, Nein,” another speaker quipped.

Indeed, the size of the rallies was quite impressive, if somewhat disquieting.

As you can see from the drone footage below, Athenians are restless and we can't help but wonder what the scene will be in the streets of Athens on Sunday evening once the results are tallied and one of these two dueling groups is forced to acquiesce to the other's vision of Greece's future.

IS video shows mass execution in ruins of Syria's Palmyra

Islamic State conducts mass execution in Syrian amphitheater

Watch video

Beirut (AFP) - The Islamic State group on Saturday released a video showing 25 Syrian government soldiers being executed by teenagers in the ancient amphitheatre in the city of Palmyra.

The video documented an execution that reportedly happened shortly after the jihadist group captured the city on May 21.

It shows the soldiers in green and brown military uniforms being shot dead on the amphitheatre's stage in front of an enormous version of the group's black and white flag.

The executioners all appear to be children or teenagers and are wearing desert camouflage and brown bandanas.

The killings are carried out in front of a relatively sparse crowd of men and some children watching from the ancient theatre's seats.

IS reportedly carried out more than 200 executions, including of civilians, in and around Palmyra in the period when it captured the city.

The executions in the Palmyra amphitheatre were first reported on May 27 by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, less than a week after IS captured the city.

At the time, Syria's antiquities director Mamoun Abdelkarim said he feared the killings could signal the start of "the group's barbarism and savagery against the ancient monuments of Palmyra".

"Using the Roman theatre to execute people proves that these people are against humanity," he told AFP.

The Greco-Roman ruins at Palmyra are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city's capture by IS prompted international concerns for the fate of its spectacular ancient treasures.

So far, IS is not reported to have damaged the actual ruins, although it has blown up and desecrated Muslim graves in the city and destroyed a statue outside the Palmyra Museum.

IS has regularly released videos of its mass executions, with slick production and gruesome violence that experts say is a key propaganda tool for the group.
