KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — An official in Nepal says at least 2,152 people are now confirmed dead in the massive earthquake that hit just outside of Kathmandu.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Komal Singh Bam gave no further details Sunday.

Saturday's 7.8 magnitude temblor struck Nepal before noon and was most severely felt in the capital and the densely populated Kathmandu Valley. Aftershocks are rippled through the region Sunday, spreading fear and panic.

The biggest of the aftershocks was magnitude 6.7 and sent people yelling and running for open ground.

Niamey (AFP) - Boko Haram militants attacked troops from Niger on an island base in Lake Chad, the government said on Saturday, in a raid believed to have taken a heavy toll on the army.

"At dawn on April 25, fighters from the terrorist group Boko Haram riding motorised canoes attacked the island of Karamga, a position northwest of of the town of Bosso held by our defence and security forces," the ministry of defence said.

"Operations are ongoing with the support of partners to counter the ambitions of this terrorist group," the ministry added in a statement broadcast on television.

The ministry did not indicate if there were any casualties as a result of the raid.

An official from Diffa, the capital of the southeast, however warned the death toll was "very heavy in the ranks of the Nigerien army," without providing further details.

State television reported that Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou had called a meeting of the national security council after the Islamists' attack.

Niger, along with Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria, has recently launched a joint offensive to end Boko Haram's six-year insurgency, which has claimed 13,000 lives and caused about 1.5 million people to flee their homes.

Activists: Syrian air raids kill 34 in northwestern town

Associated Press

This image posted on the Twitter page of Syria's al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front on Saturday, April 25, 2015, which is consistent with AP reporting, shows Nusra Front fighters in the town of Jisr al-Shughour, Idlib province, Syria. Hard-line Syrian rebel groups entered the strategic town Saturday in northwestern Syria, sending government troops fleeing after intense clashes that have seen them take nearly all of a crucial province. Syria's civil war, now in its fifth year, has killed some 220,000 people, and wounded at least 1 million. (Al-Nusra Front Twitter page via AP)

BEIRUT (AP) — Two activist groups say Syrian government airstrikes on a small town near the Turkish border have killed at least 34 people.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Jish al-Shughour activist coordinating committee both reported the air raids Sunday on Darkoush, which is located 2 kilometers (1 mile) from the Turkish frontier.

Both activist groups put the death toll at 34. The Observatory said the tally could rise because many people were seriously wounded.

A third group, the Local Coordinating Committees activist collective, said that dozens were killed and wounded but did not provide a breakdown of the figures.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Syrian military aircraft bombed the northwestern town of Jisr al-Shughour on Sunday, a day after insurgents seized control of it as part of a broader offensive that has left government forces in the area reeling.

The opposition campaign, spearheaded by the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front and Islamic rebel factions, has captured the two largest urban centers in Idlib province in the span of a month. President Bashar Assad's troops have been unable to wrest back any of the ground lost, despite attempts to mount a counteroffensive.

The Local Coordination Committees activist collective and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday's airstrikes — up to 20 of them, according to the Observatory — targeted the town of Jisr al-Shughour. There was no immediate word on casualties.

An airstrike on the town of Darkoush, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Jisr al-Shughour, killed and wounded dozens of people, both activist groups said.

The Syrian military has been relying heavily on its airpower to try to stanch the opposition tide, and carried out dozens of airstrikes on Jisr al-Shughour and the surrounding area on Saturday. The Observatory said at least 27 people, including at least 20 fighters, were killed in such strikes on Saturday alone.

The main fighting front is now located some 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of town, said Observatory director Rami Abdurrahman. Rebels have been attacking government positions in a sprawling agricultural plain south of Jisr al-Shughour as part of the wider offensive.

Syria's state news agency said the army ambushed a "convoy of terrorists" along a road in the plain, known as Sahel al-Ghab, destroying six vehicles and killing those inside. The government refers to those trying to topple Assad as terrorists.

The fight for Jisr al-Shughour began Wednesday and activists have said thousands of fighters took part in the offensive, which first targeted military facilities and checkpoints before seizing the town itself. With the fall of Jisr al-Shughour, the government is left with a presence in only a few towns and villages in Idlib province, as well as military bases.

37 tons of dead fish removed from Rio Olympic rowing venue

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Fish continued to die by the ton Thursday in a Rio de Janeiro lake that's slated to host Olympic rowing events, while city authorities and biologists argued about the cause of the die-off.

Rio's Comlurb waste management company said that as of Wednesday night, it had collected more than 37 tons of dead fish from the Rodrigo de Freitas lake since the die-off started late last week.

Garbage collectors were out in force again on Thursday to rake dead fish off the water's surface, and Comlurb said the effort would continue till the die-off subsides.

The decomposing fish, a small silvery species called twaite shad, were trucked to the city's main dump.

But an overwhelming stench still enveloped the lake, sparking complaints by angry neighbors and passers-by.

Such die-offs are common in Rio, where rivers, lakes and even the ocean are blighted by raw sewage and garbage. In February, twaite shad died en masse in the blighted waters of the Guanabara Bay, where the Olympic sailing events are to be held.

Rio's environmental secretariat insisted Thursday that the latest incident is the result of a sudden change in water temperature.

"The intense rains that happened last week and a rise in the sea levels led to a spike in the (sea) water entering the lake, causing a thermal shock," it said in a statement, reporting that water temperature in the lake fell by 4 degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) in a short period of time.

However, several scientists rejected that explanation, saying that pollution is really to blame.

Estefan Monteiro da Fonseca, an oceanographer at the Fluminense Federal University, said the official explanation "makes no sense."

"The lake continues receiving large quantities of sewage," he said, adding that the it "has large concentrations of sulfur because of the organic material dumped into it, and depending on the winds, that material rises to the surface and kills fish."

Rio's water quality has become one of the most contentious issues heading into the 2016 Olympics. Authorities have long said that the games would be the catalyst for a major cleanup of the city's waterways, but as the showcase sporting event approaches with few improvements, authorities are now admitting that the Olympic promises won't be met.

Rio Governor
Luiz Fernando Pezao acknowledged earlier this week "there's not going to be time" to finish the cleanup ahead of the games, suggesting it might wrap up by the end of 2018 instead.

Sailors have repeatedly voiced concerns about possible health and safety threats posed by competing in Rio's waters.

Fonseca, the oceanographer, warned that if another fish die-off occurs during the games in August 2016, "Rio's image could suffer irreparable damage."

Texans blame secret military takeover for Walmart closings, secret tunnels

Dylan Baddour, Houston Chronicle

A Walmart in Midland, Texas will close for six months for renovations, however some skeptics say the closure is linked to a secret military training exercise called "Operation Jade Helm."

News of the Army's operation Jade Helm stirred up widespread fears and deep mistrust of the American government in a sizable bloc of the public. Thousands of tweets, dozens of online publications and plenty of Chron.com commenters sounded the alarm of an impending military takeover.

RELATED: Covert warfare coming to Texas sparks some fears of federal takeover

Now the virtual world of alternative news has added a new twist to the tale: Walmart is in on it, and there are secret underground tunnels.

Multiple websites drew links between the suspiciously swift and simultaneous closure of a half dozen Walmarts nationwide and the military training drill that will have some of America's most elite units--Green Berets and Navy SEALS among them--trying to blend in to the civilian population in Texas and the Southwestern states.

RELATED: Feds raid Texas secessionist meeting

It may seem crazy, but the fearful aren't a totally marginal crowd. Online outcry over the original plans to hold the so-called realistic military training in American cities drew an official response from the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

Stars and Stripes, the news publication of the U.S. military, ran an article titled "Army Special Operations Command pushes back against alarmist claims about upcoming exercise," The Washington Post wrote "Why Operation Jade Helm 15 is freaking out the Internet—and why it shouldn't be" and VICE News reported"conspiracy theorists think an army training exercise will bring martial law to the US this summer."

A talk radio host even raised the issue in a conversation with Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul.

Now Walmart is in the picture. The world's largest retailer raised eyebrows last week when it simultaneously shuttered five stores—two in Texas, one in California, Oklahoma and Florida—and laid off 2,200 workers with only several hours' notice. The stores claimed plumbing problems prompted closures.

But bloggers have different ideas. The website Intellihub, the "Civilian Intelligence Agency," suggested the Walmarts are being converted into giant entrance facilities for a network of underground tunnels the military will use to transport troops across the country.

Another website, All News Pipeline, poses the question: "will these massive stores soon be used as 'food distribution centers' and to house the headquarters of invading troops from China, here to disarm Americans...?"

Another website, Before It's News, ran a post titled "JADE HELM: Explosive new information! Underground government tunnels beneath closing Walmarts, missile platforms, facial recognition, bundy ranch and Walmart tied to DHS! They are all connected!"

Multiple websites cite video showing police surrounding one of the recently closed Walmarts in California, and the empty shelving inside arranged strangely in an arch around loading bay doors. Allegations of secret cross-country tunnels and so-called "deep underground military bases" (DUMBs for short), are based on a 2004 online forum for Paulding County, Georgia, in which local residents discuss the construction effort underway in their area.

"The tunneling project is a joint venture involving the National Security Agency, CIA, FBI, MiB, Homeland Security & a few other groups," one user posted. (It's unknown if the "MiB" refers to shadowy, fictitious "Men in Black" agents made famous by the Will Smith movies)

He continued: "The addition of new Walmart facilities in northwest Georgia gives spur hubs and depots easy access to large areas that can be partitioned off for moving of very large equipment and large numbers of people in case of national emergency."

Websites also post an apparently hand-drawn map of a nationwide underground tunnel system dated 1978. Now they fear that the closed superstores and alleged tunnels underneath will be used to advance diabolical military plans to disarm and imprison Americans during the upcoming Jade Helm.

RELATED: U.S. Army drills in Texas City, La Marque

But the military calls the operation a drill in realistic warfare. County officials who spoke with army command said they'd been notified that troops would be operating undercover amongcivilians, testing their abilities to blend in. Military specialists have interpreted acronyms on an Army document and inferred that small groups of elite soldiers would stage a long-distance escape from simulated hostile territory. The Washington Post reportsnumerous past military drills have simulated activities inside hostile territories in the United States before.

Yet many Americans apparently still believe they are the enemies the military is preparing to fight. It mirrors a national trend of extreme skepticism—a CNN poll last year showed trust in the government was at an all-time low, with only 13 percent saying the trust the government most of the time. Moreover, a 2012 report documented a dramatic rise in Americans rejecting the legitimacy of their government outright, and a 2015 Department of Homeland Security reportwarned of danger from right-wing groups resentful of military and police.

Jade Helm will take place in 17 Texas cities from July to September 2015. County officials have been advised of military plans and should be able to answer citizen questions about road closures or simulated violence near residential areas.
