Breast Cancer.... the diagnosis will strike fear in over 240,000 women and 2,400 men this year...
Know what's even scarier? When the diagnosis is TNBC - Triple Negative Breast Cancer.
Know why?
To date, doctors know that most breast cancers are
characterized by the presence of three receptors (proteins
found inside or on the surface of breast cells): estrogen,
progesterone and HER2. These receptors are not
"expressed" in women with triple negative breast cancer -
hence the name. Since most treatments available today
are aimed at those receptors, TNBC is difficult to treat,
and the tumors are often more aggressive. TNBC
represents only 15 percent of all breast cancer cases
but accounts for as many as 25 percent of all breast
cancer deaths.
Many basal-like tumors are "triple negative cancers" which
means they are estrogen receptor-negative (ER-),
progesterone receptor-negative (PR-) and
HER2/neu-negative (HER2-).
This makes current treatment choices limited.
Basal-like tumors are often aggressive and are associated
with a poorer prognosis compared to the estrogen
receptor-positive subtypes (luminal A, luminal B and
normal breast-like tumors).
Unfortunately, most often basal-like tumors are not eligible
for treatment with Herceptin or hormonal therapies, like
tamoxifen, because they are HER2/neu-negative and
hormone receptor-negative. Because the genes associated
with basal-like tumors are not well understood, targeted
therapies do not yet exist.
This is why I do what I do.... the research towards
a cure must go on.... too many are fighting the battle for
their lives.... too many have already lost their fight!
Please.... pass this information on.... share it with your
friends.... If you are a woman.... STAY VIGILANT....
1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast
cancer in her lifetime..... If you love a woman.... REMIND
her to get her annual check-up & mammogram.
If you are a man, you are NOT exempt.... 2,400+ men
will be diagnosed with BREAST CANCER in the
USA this year!
EARLY DETECTION is your BEST PROTECTION!
PLEASE, do whatever you can to raise awareness.....
& if you are able, support our search for the cure!
