UBIEE - SPECIAL FEATURE -Celebrating our National Day Oct 28th
10/27/2007 6:40:31 PM

SPECIAL FEATURE
CELEBRATING OUR NATIONAL DAY

SUNDAY OCTOBER 28th
THE “OCHI” DAY OF 28 OCTOBER 1940
(”Ochi” means “No”)

Greeks all over the world, in Greece, Cyprus, the Greek Diaspora, will soon be celebrating our National Day.

In 1940 when most countries of Europe had surrendered, Hitler had the continent of Europe in his grip and the democracies were at their lowest point, Mussolini decided to take over Greece anticipating an easy victory based on his superior numbers and mechanized forces. He attacked Greece from Albania

On this occassion, UBIEE, joins forces with all Hellenes of the modern world in celebrating, and will be bringing an on-line Special Feature. All related articles can be accessed via our “Features” category.

OUR HISTORY IS FILLED
OF FIGHTS FOR FREEDOM

A NO to NAZIs and fascists, to give EUROPE a breath that costted us so much.

Sometimes to much friendship can cause you problems.

In 1985 Theodorakis gave a concert in Belgium with his ensemble.
Here are the songs of that concert.

O Antonis from the cycle Mauthausen (Kambanellis) sung
by Maria Farantouri

I GIVE YOU ANTONIS -  A song that made greek people resist and overcome 30 years later to be able to live in a democracy today.

10 % of the population was killed during  the WW II and the following civilian war as result of our fight against the tyrany. A longer period was follow with torture, human rights offend and abused, women raped, men sent to prison for their political beliefes.

OUR HISTORY IS FILLED
OF FIGHTS FOR FREEDOM

OUR HISTORY IS FILLED
OF FIGHTS FOR FREEDOM

28 Oct 2007

The Greek National Day remembers the day in October 1940 when the Greek General Ioannis Metaxas answered a defiant “ochi” (“no” in Greek) to Italy’s request to cross the country en route to Russia. The answer pitted the nations against one another and forced the Italians to invade the island ultimately dragging Greece into the war. Greece celebrates its defiance with a series of national events, parades and church services

In 1985 Theodorakis gave a concert in Belgium with his ensemble.
Here are the songs of that concert.

from the cycle Mauthausen (Kambanellis)
