Massive Corporate Consolidation of Local News Underway

May 12, 2017 at 5:14 pm

Such a move wouldn’t have been possible a few weeks back, but Donald Trump’s new Federal Trade Commission (FCC) chairman, Ajit Pai, just began implementing sweeping changes to previously established media ownership rules. Bloomberg explains:

“A Sinclair-Tribune merger was made easier last month when the FCC restored a rule that allows TV station groups to count just half of their coverage area for Ultra High Frequency stations to comply with a 39 percent nationwide cap set by Congress.”

Reporting on the news, Democracy Now invited the president and CEO of Free Press, Craig Aaron, to comment on the significance of the purchase.

“Well, you know, we’re really concerned about so many things happening at the FCC right now,” Aaron told host Amy Goodman, “because Ajit Pai, Donald Trump’s pick to head the agency, has been dismantling all kinds of consumer protections and regulations, certainly net neutrality, which many of us consider the First Amendment of the internet, what protects your ability to go online, do whatever you want, go wherever you want, and download whatever you want.

Continuing, Aaron calls the Sinclair-Tribune merger — and the others that will surely follow given the loosening of regulations at the FCC — an “unprecedented” wave of “media consolidation.” He asserts that an awful lot of power is about to be concentrated in only a few select spots:

“So we’re seeing a concentration of power on the broadcast side at the same time they are building up these powerful new gatekeepers, really doing the bidding of the most powerful companies and just paving the way for them to do whatever they want.

Using Sinclair as an example, Aaron goes on to talk about how broadcasting giants are able to push the content they want across multiple platforms simultaneously:

“So they both like to try to buy up multiple stations in the same market, have one newscast going on multiple channels, as well as doing as much as they can from Sinclair headquarters in terms of pushing content out to their whole network.”

Calling Ajit Pai’s moves at the FCC “scandalous,” Aaron highlights the complexity of modern media and says that now — more than ever — we need an aware, conscious populace:

“So, at a time where we need more local news, more competition, more choices, better-informed communities, what we’re getting is the same cookie-cutter content coast to coast.

Gas Pump Gundown, Self-Defense Footage Shows Brutal Confrontation As Man Downed

Many liberals support policies that infringe on the Second Amendment rights of others. This is because they believe that the best way to reduce gun violence is with more restrictive gun laws. However, they don’t seem to understand that most criminals don’t actually acquire their weapons lawfully. Strict guns laws really just make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to effectively protect themselves. We need firearms to stop dangerous people.

Just recently, a gunman approached a car at a gas station in broad daylight and attempted to take advantage of a couple pumping gas. Thankfully, the driver of the vehicle was also armed. When the dangerous criminal pointed his gun at the passenger and tried to enter the vehicle, the driver opened fire, striking the thug multiple times. The wounded gunman fled the scene and died from the gunshots a short time later.

According to high-definition video surveillance, the aggressor, Ronald Morales, exited the convenience store in Chicago around 5 PM and approached two people sitting in a vehicle. As he walked toward the car, he pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the passenger. He then tried to get into the vehicle but the passenger managed to keep him out.

The driver used the momentary struggle as an opportunity to get out of the car and draw his own weapon. He took aim and fired, striking the gunman several times. Morales tried to return fire but missed every shot. He escaped, but his injuries were proved to be too significant. Since the driver was a licensed owner and acted in self-defense, he won’t be facing any charges.

There are countless stories similar to this one. Just recently, a man with a concealed weapon savedcountless lives at a restaurant in Texas by killing a deranged criminal who stormed in and murdered the restaurant’s manager. And earlier this year, an employee with a gun stopped an armed robber’s attempt to steal from a convenience store.

Not only do guns help people defend themselves more effectively in public, it gives them additional protection while at home. If an intruder tries to break in and harm the people inside, a gun owning resident can use their weapon to stop them. For example, In Oklahoma, three armed burglars were shotand killed by a homeowner’s AR-15. And in Las Vegas, a thug with a gun broke into a house and tried attacked the people inside. Fortunately, one of the residents had a gun and managed to stop him from doing any harm.

Despite stories like this, many authoritarian liberals want to roll back gun rights. They believe that it’s bad for society to let law-abiding citizens own firearms. However, without guns, people are at the mercy of criminals. If the driver in this situation wasn’t armed, the situation would’ve likely been much more tragic. Morales could’ve shot and killed both of them, taken their car, and continued murdering.

Fortunately, many Republicans understand how important gun rights are. In Iowa, Terry Branstad (R) recently signed a bill broadening the protections for gun owners. The legislation makes it possible to sue local governments over unconstitutional gun-free zones. On top of that, it allows Iowans to “use force, including deadly force” to stop someone else from using force or stealth to unlawfully enter their “dwelling, place of business or employment or vehicle.”

Unsurprisingly, the law received a massive amount of praise from the National Rifle Association. Jennifer Baker, a National Rifle Association (NRA) spokeswoman, stated, “this important legislation will make it easier for law-abiding gun owners to protect and defend themselves while bringing Iowa’s gun law in line with those of other states.” She added, “the reforms of HF 517 are part of a growing movement across all 50 states to strengthen Second Amendment rights and its enactment will be a significant victory for our members and law-abiding gun owners.” By saying this, Baker is calling on other lawmakers to pass similar gun legislation. If they care about the most vulnerable in our society, they should listen.

The authoritarian left is determined to prohibit the lawful owning of firearms. They must not succeed. If they do, it’ll be much easier for criminals to take advantage of others. Republicans should push back by passing broad protections for gun owners nationwide.

US prosecutors told to push for more, harsher punishments

Sessions has directed the nation’s federal prosecutors to pursue the most serious charges possible against the vast majority of suspects, a reversal of Obama-era policies that is sure to send more people to prison and for far longer terms. WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Jeff Sessions is directing federal prosecutors to pursue the most serious charges possible against the vast majority of suspects, a reversal of Obama-era policies that is sure to send more people to prison and for much longer terms.

The move has long been expected from Sessions, a former federal prosecutor who cut his teeth during the height of the crack cocaine epidemic and who has promised to make combating violence and drugs the Justice Department's top priority.

"This policy affirms our responsibility to enforce the law, is moral and just, and produces consistency," Sessions wrote in a memo sent Thursday night to U.S. attorneys and made public early Friday.

Advocates quickly criticized the move as a revival of the worst aspects of the drug war, which subjected nonviolent, lower-level offenders to unfairly harsh sentences that disproportionately hurt minority communities.

"It looks like we're going to fill the prisons back up after finally getting the federal prison population down," said Kevin Ring, president of Families Against Mandatory Minimums. "But the social and human costs will be much higher."

The announcement is an unmistakable undoing of Obama administration criminal justice policies that aimed to ease overcrowding in federal prisons and contributed to a national rethinking of how drug criminals were prosecuted and sentenced.

Sessions contends a spike in violence in some big cities and the nation's opioid epidemic show the need for a return to tougher tactics. He foreshadowed the plan early in his tenure, when he signaled his strong support for the federal government's continued use of private prisons, reversing another Obama directive to phase out their use.

"The opioid and heroin epidemic is a contributor to the recent surge of violent crime in America," Sessions said in remarks prepared for a Thursday speech in Charleston, West Virginia. "Drug trafficking is an inherently violent business. If you want to collect a drug debt, you can't, and don't, file a lawsuit in court. You collect it by the barrel of a gun."

The policy memo says prosecutors should "charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offense" — something more likely to trigger mandatory minimum sentences. Those rules limit a judge's discretion and are typically dictated, for example, by the quantity of drugs involved in a crime.

The memo concedes there will be cases in which "good judgment" will warrant a prosecutor to veer from that rule. But any exceptions will need to be approved by top supervisors, and the reasons must be documented, allowing the Justice Department to track the handling of such cases by its 94 U.S. attorney's offices.

And even if they opt not to pursue the most serious charges, prosecutors are still required to provide judges with all the details of a case when defendants are sentenced, which could lengthen prison terms.

The requirements "place great confidence in our prosecutors and supervisors to apply them in a thoughtful and disciplined manner, with the goal of achieving just and consistent results in federal cases," the memo states.

The directive rescinds guidance by Sessions' Democratic predecessor, Eric Holder, who told prosecutors they could in some cases leave drug quantities out of charging documents so as not to trigger long sentences. Holder's 2013 initiative, known as "Smart on Crime," was aimed at encouraging shorter sentences for nonviolent drug offenders and preserving Justice Department resources for more serious and violent criminals.

The Obama policy shift coincided with U.S. Sentencing Commission changes that made tens of thousands of federal drug prisoners eligible for early release, and a clemency initiative that freed convicts deemed deserving of a second chance. Combined, those changes led to a steep decline in a federal prison population that now stands at just under 190,000, down from nearly 220,000 in 2013. Nearly half of those inmates are in custody for drug crimes, records show.

Obama officials cited that decline and a drop in the overall number of drug prosecutions as evidence that policies were working as intended. They argued prosecutors were getting pickier about the cases they were bringing and were seeking mandatory minimum sentences less often.

Still, some prosecutors felt constrained by the Holder directive and expressed concern that they'd lose plea bargaining leverage — and a key inducement for cooperation — without the ability to more freely pursue harsher punishments.

The reversal gives prosecutors better tools to go after drug traffickers and gangs, said Lawrence Leiser, head of the National Association of Assistant U.S. Attorneys.

Sessions and other Justice Department officials argue Holder's approach sidestepped federal laws that impose such sentences and created inconsistency across the country in the way defendants are punished. Even while in the Senate, Sessions repeatedly asserted that eliminating mandatory minimums weakened the ability of law enforcement to protect the public.

Defense attorneys disagreed.

Barry Pollack, head of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, said the new policy "marks a return to the failed policies of past administrations that caused mass incarceration, devastated families and communities, wasted untold millions of dollars and failed to make us any safer."

The Dakota Access Pipeline Has Had Its First Leak Despite The Fact It Is Not Operational

TAGS: ,

By Luke Miller Truth Theory

The controversial pipeline leaked 84 gallons of oil in South Dakota.

Early last month the DAPL leaked 84 gallons of oil in South Dakota. This adds to the argument from the indigenous tribes that the pipeline is a danger to their water supply and needs to be further reviewed for environmental safety.

The incident which took place on April 4 spilled 84 gallons of oil, despite the fact that it is still not operational. The state’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DERN) shared a report on its searchable database, however they did not release the information to the public.

DERN spokesman Brian Walsh said that the spill was relatively small and the state doesn’t share information on spills unless they feel they are a threat to public health or water supplies.

He said “We realize Dakota Access gets a lot of attention. We also try to treat all of our spills in a consistent manner,” Walsh said. “We treated this as we would treat any other 84-gallon oil spill.”

In response to the spill Native American spokesman Dallas Goldtooth has said:

“This spill serves as a reminder that it is not a matter of if a pipeline spills, it’s a matter of when a pipeline spills. The fact that this occurred before Dakota Access even becomes operational is all the more concerning. We fear more spills will come to bear, which is an all too frequent situation with Energy Transfer Partners pipeline projects. As such, eyes of the world are watching and will keep Dakota Access and Energy Transfer Partners accountable.”

The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has said they will not be fining Energy Transfer Partners — the company behind the spill, as they consider it to small- DENR spokesman Welsh said. “Size-wise, an 84-gallon release is pretty small relative to a lot of other things we work on,”
