Clinton 'Heartbroken' Over Election, Says FBI Letter Was Turning Point

Nov 12, 2016, 2:16 PM ET

WATCH Hillary Clinton Publicly Concedes: 'This Is Painful and It Will Be for a Long Time'

Hillary Clinton told her top donors in a call today that she is "heartbroken" by the election outcome and she pointed to FBI Director James Comey's letter to Congress about a review of newly-found emails as a turning point in the contest between her and Republican Donald Trump.

Clinton's call with her top donors was not open to the press, but a source told ABC News that the tone was somber, with Clinton thanking those on the call and referring to the election results as a "very tough loss."

Similar to what her campaign chair, John Podesta, said on a call with donors and supporters Friday, Clinton placed most of the blame for the loss on the letter Comey sent to congressional leaders on Oct. 28, 11 days before the election, announcing a review of newly-discovered emails that were potentially related to the investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server as secretary of state.

Clinton said her campaign had felt confident in their chances of victory after the third and final presidential debate in Las Vegas on Oct. 20.

But she said the FBI director's letter eight days later did two things: It killed momentum in her campaign and boosted motivation for Trump.

Comey issued a second announcement on Nov. 6, two days before the election, that the review had reaffirmed an earlier conclusion by the FBI that no criminal charges were warranted over the emails.

Clinton also told donors today that she is "concerned" and "deeply saddened" for Americans who she said are now living in fear following the election of Trump. She called on the group to stand up for the people who may not be able to defend themselves.

The source said Clinton did not address her future plans.

Clinton's comments to her top donors were similar to remarks that top staffers in her campaign made on a call with donors and supporters Friday, sources told ABC News.

Donors on the call were told that the campaign was going well until the Comey letter surfaced on Oct. 28, sources told ABC News. The campaign noticed a change in the attitude of voters and that change was accelerated by the second letter from Comey on Nov. 6 saying that no charges were called for, top staffers told donors on the Friday call.

The campaign found that the Nov. 6 letter helped Trump by bolstering his narrative that the system is rigged.

A top donor told ABC News that the Comey letter was "a perfect setup for failure" and added that the "donor community is 100 percent behind Hillary Clinton and the campaign."

"It's a very sad outcome," the donor said.

I got to say something on say this one. Hillary has always blamed someone for things not going her way. Look at yourself Hillary, and ask, where did I go wrong.

As far as you being in fear from Trump being elected, just think of how we would feel if you were elected. I would have been horrified.

My wish for you is that you find peace in your life.

At least three Iraqis have lost their lives after Daesh terrorists fired mortars containing chemical agents against civilian areas south of Mosul as Iraqi forces press ahead with the large battle to liberate the northern city.

On Saturday night, the Takfiri militants fired 15 mortar shells, some of which filled with chlorine gas, at a village in Sharqat district, located on Tigris River banks 100 kilometers south of Mosul.

An unnamed Iraqi security source told Iraq’s War Media Cell that the victims of the incident were all members of a family. Two others were also wounded in the attack.

The attack comes days after New York-based Human Rights Watch warned against the use of toxic chemicals by Daesh militants in areas near Mosul as the terror outfit is making desperate attempts to keep its last stronghold in Iraq in the face of a large-scale liberation operation there.

“The use of toxic chemicals as a means of warfare is a serious threat to civilians and combatants in and around the embattled city of Mosul, and is a war crime,” HRW said.

Lama Fakih, Deputy Middle East Director at Human Rights Watch said the use of such banned arms show “a brutal disregard for human life,” adding that as the terrorists keep fleeing the areas under their control, “they have been repeatedly attacking and endangering the civilians they left behind.”

In another development, two fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units were killed at a bombing in a district situated north of the central city of Ramadi, Iraq’s al-Sumaria news website reported.

The victims were trying to defuse improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and mines planted in a house, according to the report.

Separately, Iraqi army jets carried out airstrikes on a building in Ramadi’s Anah district, killing Daesh ringleader Mustafa Mansur al-Ravi along with five other militants.

Ravi was said to be among Daesh heads in the western Anbar Province and a direct supervisor of bombings and attacks against Iraqi security forces.

The commander of Nineveh Liberation Operation, General Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah, said that armored units attacked Mosul’s al-Salam district and targeted Daesh-held positions, killing over 30 terrorists.

Since October 17, the Iraqi army, volunteer Shia and Sunni fighters as well as Kurdish Peshmerga forces have been engaged in an offensive to liberate Mosul, the last Daesh bastion in the Middle Eastern country.

Kurdish forces demolishing Arab homes: HRW

In a relevant development on Sunday, Human Rights Watch accused Iraq’s Kurdish security forces of having illegally destroyed Arab homes in northern Iraq over the past two years in what may amount to a war crime.

The rights group cited in a report the obliteration of homes across 21 towns and villages in Kirkuk and Nineveh provinces between September 2014 and May 2016.

Joe Stork, HRW Deputy Director for Middle East, said the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) security forces “destroyed Arab homes - but not those belonging to Kurds - for no legitimate military purpose.”

"KRG leaders’ political goals don’t justify demolishing homes illegally," he added.

The report was based on a number of field visits and interviews with over 120 witnesses and officials.

Hundreds of Israelis have held a demonstration in central Tel Aviv to vent their anger at the policies of hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Saturday’s protest was organized by the Israeli Labour party and a number of left-wing parties such as Meretz.

Demonstrator Uri Wertman said Netanyahu “has launched vicious and slanderous attacks against journalists and tried to close down the broadcasting corporation.”

The event came a few days after the Israeli premier declined to be interviewed by a Channel Two anchorwoman for an overview of his administration’s performance and the role of his wife, Sara, in appointing officials.

In a statement released afterwards, Netanyahu’s office claimed that the interview was part of a plot to topple his administration.

The accusation comes at a time when Netanyahu and his associates in the Likud party have come under fire for their efforts to close the Israeli broadcasting corporation and set up a successor.

There has also been widespread coverage of abuse allegations by housekeepers against Sara Netanyahu.

“What we see is an across-the-board attempt by Netanyahu and his government to control all forms of media,” said Elad Man, legal adviser of media watchdog the Seventh Eye, adding, “I don’t think we should even try to imagine what will happen … if those attempts succeed.”

Elsewhere in his comments during Saturday’s rally, Wertman said Netanyahu’s policies pose a danger “to the entire Middle East.”

Netanyahu’s administration “continues building in the settlements, in the occupied Palestinian territories, and it attempts to annex them in order to prevent the establishment of the independent Palestinian state,” he added.

Over half a million Israelis live in more than 230 illegal settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem al-Quds.

The Tel Aviv regime has defied international calls to stop its unauthorized construction activities, with its settlement expansion being among the main reasons behind the collapse of the last round of the so-called Middle East peace talks in 2014.

Sunday night’s supermoon is the closest and biggest full moon since 1948

This NASA Goddard video explains why you don't want to miss the Nov. 14 supermoon. (NASA Goddard)

(This story, originally published Tuesday, has been updated.)

November’s full moon is special. Not only is it a supermoon — which appears larger than a “regular” full moon — it will be the closest such moon to Earth since January 1948. We won’t see the full moon this close again until Nov. 25, 2034, according to NASA.

This month’s awe-inspiring full moon is also known as the Full Beaver Moon, as it was when Native American tribes set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs.

Late Sunday afternoon, the nearly-full moon rises at 4:43 p.m. in Washington, while the sun sets at 4:55 p.m. Clear skies are forecast for much of the country Sunday evening, allowing excellent viewing, with the exception of the Southeast and Pacific Northwest, where cloudy skies are expected.

Monday morning, the moon sets at 6:36 a.m. (in Washington) — so if you scoot out of bed around 5 a.m., you’ll see the moon low in the western sky plump and full.

The moon officially becomes full on Monday at 8:52 a.m. — it won’t be visible on the East Coast at the exact moment of fullness, but it will on the West Coast.

The nearly full moon next rises Monday evening at 5:30 p.m., so look for it close to the eastern horizon. However, clouds may then be an obstruction not only in the Mid-Atlantic, but across much of the nation’s northern tier.

For any location in the United States or abroad, the Naval Observatory provides rise and set times for the moon and sun.

In October, NASA said that “the perigee full moon can be as much as 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than an apogee full moon.” The NASA team goes on to explain, “Hanging high overhead with no reference points to provide a sense of scale, one full moon looks much like any other.”

In other words, for the human eye, it is difficult to perceive the difference between a supermoon and any other.

The next perigee full moon occurs Dec. 14 — the third such moon in an October-November-December lunar trifecta. After that, there will be a perigee full moon on Jan. 1-2, 2018 — when the moon and the Earth will be 221,559 miles apart.

Since the moon’s orbit around Earth is an elliptical shape, there are times when our lunar companion is closest to Earth. This is called perigee. This month, the perigee occurs Nov. 14 at about 6 a.m. — within two hours of the moon becoming officially full — making this fun event an extra-super, perigee full moon.

2016 is coming to an end with three supermoons. The first one occurred on Oct. 16 and will be followed by another one on Nov. 14, which will be bigger than it has been since 1948. The last supermoon is expected on Dec.14.(YouTube/ScienceAtNASA)

Astrologer Richard Nolle defined a supermoon in 1979, but the term has really taken off in the past few years. Sometimes it seems as if every moon is a supermoon. Nolle said that a supermoon is a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.

The distance between Earth and the moon can range from 221,208 miles at its closest possible point to 252,898 miles at its farthest. That’s a difference of nearly 32,000 miles. This month, it gets close at 221,524 miles between Earth and the moon — just 316 miles from its nearest possible location.

The supermoon isn’t just a fun sight for photographers and skywatchers — it has an actual impact on the coastline. Every year from November through February, the highest tides — called “king tides” — sweep onto the shores during full moons. This is due to the combination of gravity from the moon and sun being the closest to Earth as they will be all year. The tides get even higher during “supermoons” simply because the moon is closer to Earth.

The Post’s Jason Samenow and Angela Fritz contributed to this report.

Donald Trump is richer than all the presidents combined

The US presidency has been traditionally held by rich men. Not always—Truman, Coolidge, Lincoln, Grant and a few others were not wealthy and amongst our “poorest” presidents, according to 24/7 Wall Street’s definitive list of presidential wealth adjusted into 2016 dollars.

On the other end of the spectrum, when you adjust for inflation as of 2010, there is George Washington with a net worth of $580 million, Thomas Jefferson with $234 million, and John F. Kennedy with $1 billion—though he hadn’t technically inherited it when he was assassinated.

Combined, the first 44 presidents had around $2.99 billion in assets – in 2016 dollars. While that’s a lot, President-elect Donald Trump currently has a net worth of $3.0 billion, according to Bloomberg. (Still, he’s not wealthy enough to be ranked by its Billionaire list, which is limited to the 500 richest individuals.)

Of course, there’s not great visibility to Trump’s actual net worth—he could have much more or less. While Trump himself claims to have $10 billion, many people have called into question whether he’s a billionaire at all, given his lack of financial transparency and refusal to release his tax returns.

If Bloomberg’s numbers are right—and they are as legit, if not more, than anyone else’s—this makes Trump about $10 million richer than every Commander in Chief who came before him, combined.
