Iraqi PM says Mosul offensive going faster than expected

PARIS (Reuters) - Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Thursday that Iraqi forces were moving faster than expected towards Islamic State's stronghold of Mosul, and that the coordination between Shi'ite militias and Kurds showed Iraq's unity in opposing the group.

Foreign ministers and senior diplomats from several Western and Middle Eastern countries were meeting in Paris to discuss how to restore peace and stability to Mosul after Islamic State has been routed from its Iraqi stronghold.

Speaking on a video conference call from Baghdad, Abadi said all efforts were being made to create humanitarian corridors for civilians fleeing Iraq's second-largest city, where some 1.5 million people still live.

"The forces are pushing towards the town more quickly than we thought and more quickly than we had programmed in our campaign plan," Abadi said.

Iraqi and Kurdish forces said on Tuesday they had secured some 20 villages on the outskirts of Mosul, the biggest city under the control of Islamic State, which grabbed vast stretches of Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Retaking Mosul would signal the defeat of the ultra-hardline Sunni jihadists in Iraq but could lead to further sectarian bloodletting, something the Baghdad government and its international backers are keen to prevent.

Abadi said human rights violations would not be accepted. He sought to try to reassure international backers that his country was entering a new phase of cooperation, to avoid falling into the sectarian violence that has torn it apart since a U.S.-led invasion to oust Saddam Hussein in 2003.

"Our war today in Mosul is an Iraqi war conducted by Iraqis for Iraqis and for the defense of Iraq's territory," he said, stressing that it was the first time in 25 years that Iraqi forces had entered northern Kurdish territory to fight together.

"Full Iraqi unity is shining through and more than ever showing the unity to vanquish terrorism," he said.

The Paris meeting will seek to put together some guidelines on how to administrate the city after the departure of Islamic State, but also protecting civilians and providing aid.

In his opening speech, French President Francois Hollande said, however, it was also important to begin planning a separate offensive on the group's bastion Raqqa in Syria, where he said Islamic State fighters were already fleeing from Mosul.

"We must be exemplary in chasing down the terrorists who are leaving Mosul for Raqqa," he said. "We cannot accept success as allowing those who were in Mosul to disappear to other locations where they can then launch attacks."

Russia has muscled the US out of Syria

Aleppo

Russian and Syrian forces appeared to have let up on bombing besieged Aleppo on Tuesday, possibly allowing civilians and rebel groups to flee the city.

While citizens and combatants in Aleppo would likely welcome any cessation of the brutal Russian and Syrian air campaign, which has been linked to possible war crimes likebombing hospitals and using banned munitions, the unilateral move excludes the international community and the US.

To put it bluntly, the US and larger international community have been muscled out of Syria by Russia.

The US no longer "has a horse to ride" in Syria, according to Cliff Kupchan, chairman ofEurasia Group and an expert on Syria and the Middle East.

Kupchan says two key events have undermined the US's clout in Syria to the point that there are no longer any good options there for the US to pursue.

The rise of Jabhat Fateh al-Sham — an Islamist group formerly affiliated with Al Qaeda that called itself Jabhat al Nusra — as the dominant opposition group to Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime represents the first blow to the US's strategy of "training and equipping" secular, moderate rebels.

Kupchan says that toward the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011, there was secular opposition to Assad that had "sufficient numbers to balance" Assad's forces on the battlefield.

Now, however, "the secular opposition is extremely small and not terribly relevant to the ongoing Syrian tragedy," Kupchan said.

After the erosion of meaningful opposition to Assad, Russia's intervention on behalf of Assad just over a year ago may have been the final nail in the coffin for the relevance of the US and larger international community.

"Assad was on his heels," said Kupchan. "Russian intervention put him back moving forward. Assad and his allies are now the dominant power on the battlefield."

In fact, Russia dominates Syria's airspace so much that the US can't really consider launching airstrikes against Assad — Moscow's recent deployment of advanced surface-to-air missile defenses to Syria has created a de facto no-fly zone over areas under government control.

Igor Sutyagin, an expert on Russian missile defenses at the Royal United Services Institute, told Business Insider that the US would now strain to strike at Syrian government targets. Even the US Air Force's fifth-generation stealth aircraft would have to be "operationally, tactically brilliant" to strike Russian or Syrian targets, he said.

But as Kupchan notes, even if the US could readily destroy the missiles, risking war with Russia is not worth it.

(Russian President Vladimir Putin, right, shakes hands with Syrian President Bashar Assad.Kremlin/Reuters)

Since the kinetic solutions to ending the war have crumbled, US officials have been again discussing the idea of equipping and training rebels and the Kurds, but Kupchan says these are not good options either.

"In theory, there are sufficient secular and non-extremist members of the opposition that one could construe a train-and-equip program. The problems facing that strategy would be numerous — the Syrian/Russian/Iranian alliance has significant momentum on the battlefield, and while we may well give weapons to the 'sane opposition,' the chances they would end up in the hands of the radical opposition is extremely high," Kupchan said.

Indeed, US efforts to train and equip groups in Syria have failed spectacularly in the past. According to Kupchan, "the best shot is the shot we're taking — to continue to engage Russia and, to the extent practical, the broader community internationally (Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Iran) to try to save lives."

But when Syria, Iran, and Russia increasingly control the situation on the ground, the prospect of leveraging these countries to act against their interests, with no threat of military challenge from the US, grows increasingly dim.

The US and international community can continue to nudge and prod Russia to do the right thing in Syria, but Washington's chances of exerting real influence on the ground have now dwindled to virtually zero.

Silencing Assange: ‘US establishment in panic over Clinton WikiLeaks emails’

Published time: 19 Oct, 2016 16:12

The US establishment is panicking over the release of Clinton’s emails while Ecuador is afraid its UK embassy may lose internet access, said Robert Steele, CEO of Earth Intelligence Network, on Ecuador’s decision to cut Julian Assange’s web access.

Ecuador admitted on Tuesday it has cut the internet access of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, saying his activities may be influencing the US presidential election.

WikiLeaks accused the US of pressuring Ecuador to stop the leaks of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s emails. However, the State Department denies the allegations.

RT: WikiLeaks claims Washington is behind Ecuador's decision to restrict internet access for Julian Assange, while the State Department denies that. So what is happening behind the scenes?

Robert Steele: Let’s start with Barack Obama and the director of national intelligence are lying to the public, as is the Time magazine cover story and the New York Times, and CNN - the Russians are not behind the electronic fraud. Stanford University has clearly established that Hillary Clinton stole the nomination from Bernie Sanders using electoral fraud. Now Julian Assange and all the emails that are going to be released on November 1 have absolutely brought the US establishment into a state of complete panic. There are stories about how Assange may even be turned over to the Americans. The bottom line here is – Ecuador is afraid that they will lose all of its internet access, because the city of London can easily cut off the Ecuadorian embassy as a whole. Assange is a pawn. The Clinton campaign is starting to realize that Donald Trump’s message about “the system is rigged” is now resonating all around the world and across the USA.

RT: Huge claims to make, but what proof is there?

RS: …If you just do a simple Google search for electronic fraud, you will find multiple documented stories from Stanford University to Princeton University, to others. Fully one-third of the Diebold machines have been demonstrated publically to be hackable. And not just hackable by insiders, but hackable by people with remote devices…

‘Attack on freedom of press, speech’

Sara Flounders, head of the International Action Center called the decision to cut off internet access “an attack on freedom of press.”

Sara Flounders: I don’t think cutting off internet access should be done. It is really an attack on freedom of the press and freedom of speech in a very real way. We all know that the US threatens, interferes and disrupts elections in countries all over the world. So for them to threaten Ecuador over Julian Assange’s ability to use the internet, to expose and reveal some of the cynical and calculated emails from the Hillary Clinton campaign - obviously they want to shut down any such news. They also want to use the internet to create all sorts of crises for other countries around the world. But they object when freedom of speech and revealing of documents is used against US politicians.

RT: WikiLeaks, citing “multiple sources”, reported that US Secretary of State John Kerry allegedly asked Ecuador to stop Julian Assange from publishing Clinton leaks.

In their statement, Ecuador insists that they do not intend to hamper WikiLeaks journalistic activities. What do you think their motivation could be?

SF: Ecuador has given for more than four years asylum refuge to Julian Assange in their embassy in London. That is a very courageous act for a small country knowing the US record of imposing regime change, assassinations, coups around the world particularly on smaller countries that in any way challenge US policy. So it has been a very courageous thing for Ecuador to provide this asylum.

RT: Do you think that the Clinton information revealed by WikiLeaks is classified as journalism, or this is a concerted effort to stop one candidate from being elected?

SF: It is certainly not going to stop this candidate from being elected. There is enormous media support, and regardless of who is elected, US war crimes and policy will continue with either candidate. So is it an effort to stop? No, I don’t think so. It is an effort to expose a record behind Hillary Clinton, which is a way of informing the world as to exactly who this politician is. It is a very important part of access to what are the secret calculations that go on within the US electoral system, where we have very little to choose between either candidate and either party.

It is an important part of journalistic freedom of the press to know what is said in private by these politicians. We have a‘sexual predator’ and a ‘drone predator’ running in US elections. And to reveal any information and give people, the world more information on who they are – that is an important role. I would applaud WikiLeaks exposés – they have been very, very important in showing what goes on behind the scenes and behind when US politicians speak, what they are really saying, and just how cynical and calculated they are. That is important information. So I would put this under freedom of information, freedom of expression, freedom of speech.

Hillary Clinton Begs Forgiveness From Rothschilds In Leaked Email

by Whitney Webb, True Activist

Hillary Clinton asked Lady de Rothschild "Let me know what penance I owe you" after requesting Tony Blair accompany her on official business, preventing him from attending a Rothschild event scheduled for that same weekend.

Though the influence of money in politics is well-known, many people are amazed to learn that most of that money comes from a very few individuals – the 1% of the 1% as it were. These individuals comprise the global elite, whose mind-boggling fortunes are often used to buy ‘favors’ and even set policy in governments all over the world, not just the United States. Many of these elites made their fortunes through centuries-old banking dynasties. The most infamous of these are undoubtedly the Rothschild family, who have been the world’s wealthiest family for over 200 years.

Indeed, the most well-known Rothschild patriarch, Mayer Amschel Rothschild, once saidGive me control of a nation’s money and I care not who makes its laws.” The Rothschilds and their international banking cartel, ‘Rothschild & Co,’ are majority owners of numerous corporations spanning nearly every industry. They are also co-owners of numerous private banks includingthe International Monetary Fund, which essentially functions as a global loan shark with no government or international oversight, as well as many of the world’s central banks, which areprivate entities despite their associations with federal governments.

Several politicians, especially those who are the most willing to bend over backwards for wealthy interests, have made their careers by catering to the whims of the Rothschilds and other families like them. In US politics today, there is no better example of this archetype than Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. In fact, less than two months ago, Clinton flew just 20 miles in a private jet to attend a private Rothschild fundraiser in her honor. Yet, this is just one of the latest examples of her intimate relationship to the banking dynasty.

In emails from her private server made available to the public by WikiLeaks, Clinton’s close relationship to Lady de Rothschild is evident due to their warm exchanges which include phrases such as “You are the best […] Sweet dreams,” “I remain your loyal adoring pal,” and “Much love.” This is significant as, judging by Clinton’s other emails, her communication style is almost always curt and concise, never approaching the outright declarations of affection found only in her exchanges with Lady de Rothschild. Lady de Rothschild, married into the Rothschild family in 2000 after being introduced to Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, who alone is worth $20 billion, at the 1998 Bilderberg Conference. War criminal Henry Kissinger served as the couple’s “match-maker.”

Yet, the most bizarre interaction between Clinton and Lady de Rothschild took place in an email titled “Info for you” (ID#1606), which was sent while Clinton was serving as US Secretary of State. In the email, Clinton tells Lady de Rothschild that she had to ask Tony Blair (then-Prime Minister of England) to accompany her to Israel due to the Middle East peace negotiations taking place at the time. Blair had previously planned to spend the weekend in Aspen, Colorado with the Rothschilds at an unspecified conference, but accepted Clinton’s invitation. Clinton then says “I hope you all understand. […] Let me know what penance I owe you.” For those who are not familiar with the word, penance is defined as follows: “An act of self-mortification or devotion performed voluntarily to show sorrow for a sin or other wrongdoing.” Does this sound like something Hillary Clinton would normally say?

clintonpenanceemail

Considering that her former bodyguard once said she could “make Richard Nixon look like Mahatma Gandhi,” this seems doubtful. More importantly, why would someone as powerful as Secretary of State literally grovel for forgiveness from a private citizen? The circumstance is truly bizarre considering Clinton offers “penance” or asking the Prime Minister of England to decline an invitation to the Rothschilds’ weekend getaway in order to attend high-stakes peace negotiations. This email clearly shows where the real power is in politics as well as where Clinton’s true loyalty lies.

Syria conflict: Aleppo 'humanitarian pause' begins

REUTERS
Some 2,700 people have been killed or injured in rebel-held Aleppo in the past month, monitors say

A "humanitarian pause" in attacks on rebel-held eastern Aleppo - part of a plan to allow civilians and fighters to leave - has come into effect.

The unilateral truce, announced by Russia, will last until at least 19:00 (16:00 GMT). Eight exit corridors have been designated from the east.

Russian and Syrian air strikes have been halted since Tuesday.

Rebels have rejected the plan and there are reports of clashes at one of the corridors out of the east.

Only a few civilians have been evacuated so far, if any, and various parties to the conflict are blaming each other for this.

A correspondent in Aleppo for Orient News, a Dubai-based pro-opposition TV channel, said he and his crew had visited the two crossings intended for evacuation, but only a few civilians had left at the very start of the ceasefire, and none since then.

Ammar Jaber accused Syrian government forces of targeting the corridors with sniper and rocket fire. He said "fierce clashes" were continuing and 15 people had come under sniper fire.

Syria's state-run news agency has blamed "terrorist groups" for the attacks, and the Russian state-run broadcaster Rossiya 24 said members of Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, a militant group once aligned with al-Qaeda, were preventing people from leaving.

And a teacher in Aleppo, Wissam Zarqa, told the BBC: "To my knowledge, none could leave."

He said he thought "no arrangements had been made" for medical evacuations.

Turkish strike

Last month, Syrian government forces encircled the eastern section and launched an all-out assault backed by Russia.

Some 2,700 people have been killed or injured in the bombardment since then, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group. About 250,000 civilians who live in Aleppo have been trapped by the fighting.

Western leaders have said Russian and Syrian air strikes on Aleppo could amount to war crimes, an accusation rejected by Russia.

In other developments, the Turkish military says its jets have attacked the Kurdish YPG militia north of Aleppo, killing up to 200 fighters.

But a senior Kurdish commander, Mahmoud Barkhadan, told the Associated Press news agency that no more than 10 of his fighters had died.

The UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Thursday that at least 11 people had been killed, with 24 reported injuries. The group compiles information from a network of contacts on the ground.

The YPG is supported by the US in its fight against so-called Islamic State, but Turkey regards it as a terrorist organisation.

REUTERS
Some 2,700 people have been killed or injured in rebel-held Aleppo in the past month, monitors say

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said earlier this week the pause in the bombing would help "guarantee" the safety of six corridors through which civilians could leave.

Rebel fighters have been offered a chance to leave with their weapons via two corridors.

Jihadist group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, which was known as al-Nusra Front until it broke formal ties with al-Qaeda in July, has vowed to fight on.

"We choose not to give up our people," it said.

Mainstream rebel factions also dismissed Russia's proposal as a gimmick.

The UN, which regards Jabhat Fateh al-Sham as a terrorist organisation, says the group has 900 fighters inside Aleppo, out of a maximum of 8,000 rebels in total.
