Baltimore prosecutor seeks to block release of Freddie Gray autopsy

(Reuters) - Baltimore's top prosecutor plans to seek a protective order that would block the release of Freddie Gray's autopsy report and other documents as she prosecutes police over his arrest, the Baltimore Sun reported on Thursday.

State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby told the newspaper that prosecutors "have a duty to ensure a fair and impartial process for all parties involved" and "will not be baited into litigating this case through the media."

Gray, a 25-year-old black man, died on April 19 from a spinal injury suffered in police custody. His death triggered protests and a day of rioting in the largely black city, and came amid a national debate on police brutality.

Mosby has charged six officers with violations ranging from misconduct in office to, in one case, second-degree murder. All the officers have been released on bail.

She outlined her intention to seek the protective order in a filing on Monday in Baltimore City Circuit Court. She also asked for more time to respond to defense motions that she and her office be removed from the case and that the case be tried outside Baltimore.

The move is the latest effort by Mosby's office to restrict information in the high-profile case. Prosecutors have sought a gag order to prevent participants from discussing the case in public, and have broken with a long-standing practice by not giving a copy of the autopsy report to Baltimore police.

Ivan Bates, who represents one of the accused officers, Sergeant Alicia White, criticized Mosby's request, saying she had made a nationally televised speech about the evidence.

"Now that it is time to turn over the evidence, to ask for a protective order is beyond disingenuous," the Sun quoted him as saying.

Bates said the protective order would allow only prosecutors and defense attorneys to see the documents, and could require the court to seal all new filings that make reference to information in the documents.

The court wrangling comes as Baltimore is suffering from a sharp upturn in murders which police blame on drug gang turf wars. Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said on Wednesday the city was seeking more federal help in the face of the violence.

Accused former FIFA Vice President Warner vows to tell all

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD (Reuters) - Former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner, a central figure in world soccer's deepening scandal, has vowed to tell investigators all he knows about corruption within the sport's governing body.

In a paid political address entitled "The gloves are off" broadcast in Trinidad and Tobago late on Wednesday, Warner said he feared for his life, but would reveal everything he knows.

He said he had instructed his lawyers to contact law enforcement officials both in his homeland and overseas.

"There can be no reversal of the course of action I've now embarked upon," said Warner, a prominent local politician and businessman.

He said some of the documents he had related to financial dealings with FIFA, some of which are being investigated by U.S. authorities. But he also said he had documents linking FIFA with the 2010 Trinidad and Tobago government elections.

"I have kept quiet, fearing this day might come. I will do so no more," he said. "I will no longer keep secrets for them who actively seek to destroy the country."

Warner is among more than a dozen officials charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with running a criminal enterprise that involved more than $150 million in bribes.

Prosecutors say Warner solicited bribes worth millions and charged him with offences including racketeering and bribery.

His address on Wednesday came hours after American Chuck Blazer, another former FIFA executive committee member, admitted taking bribes relating to a range of tournaments, including the 1998 and 2010 World Cups.

Child protection boss warns there is 'not enough land' to build all the prisons needed to lock up UK's paedophiles

  • · Former Deputy Children's Commissioner for England has warned child sex abuse in the UK is so rife there aren't enough prisons to lock up offenders
  • · Sue Berelowitz is chairing the government's inquiry into child sex abuse
  • · Said public will be 'shocked by scale of problem' when she releases report

Sue Berelowitz (pictured) who is chairing the government's inquiry into child sex abuse said the public will be 'shocked by the sheer scale of the problem' when she releases her report

Sue Berelowitz, who has been under fire after she received a six-figure payoff and was then promptly rehired as a £1,000 a-day consultant, made the claim while speaking at the Hay Literary Festival yesterday.

Mrs Berelowitz, who is currently chairing the government's inquiry into child sex abuse said the public will be 'shocked by the sheer scale of the problem' when she releases her report in November.

She said that if the Crown Prosecution Service were to prosecute every paedophile there would not be enough land to build the prisons needed.

Speaking to Jon Snow with Camila Batmanghelidjh and Helena Kennedy during a talk on child sex abuse last night, she blamed the prevalence of pornography for the growth of an increasingly sexualised society.

Mrs Berelowitz said: 'We live in a highly sexualised world in which for the most part it is considered quite acceptable [for men] to do as they want with females, and too many females think that is something they must comply with because they think it is a part of growing up

'Child porn and the proliferation of indecent images of children, and all the stuff we are seeing on social media which is undoubtedly having an impact on young people growing up and their impressions of sex and sexuality.'

She added: 'If the CPS were to prosecute everyone we would need a rolling prison programme. I would say there probably isn't the land to build enough prisons,' The Telegraph reports.

Mrs Berelowitz, who failed to speak out about sexual abuse by British Pakistani gangs, took voluntary redundancy from her £99,333-a-year post on April 30, receiving a pay-off worth £134,000.

But the next day she was hired as a consultant leading an inquiry into child abuse in the family – which she had been in charge of in her old role since last July.

The 61-year-old is paid £960 a day, working up to nine days a month – so she earns almost as much as before, but for less work.

Simon Danczuk, Labour MP for Rochdale, where some of the grooming gangs operated, said the redundancy pay-off was ‘disgraceful’.

Mrs Berelowitz's report, to be published in November, follows abuse scandals in areas including Rotherham, where it was reported that 1,400 children were abused between 1997 and 2013.

Speaking last night Mrs Berelowitz also claimed that the covering up of child sex abuse is still happening in local authorities and police stations across the country - but added that the bigger problem is taking place in children's homes.

Mrs Berelowitz is considered a controversial figure because her 2012 report in the wake of high-profile abuse cases in Rochdale and Rotherham denied there was a growing number of Asian grooming gangs.

Despite finding that more than a quarter of perpetrators known to the authorities were Asian, Mrs Berelowitz said there was no evidence to conclude that there was a particular issue with Asian gangs.

Twenty years ago, my husband and I purchased our home. We both love working in the yard, flowers, keeping up the lawn and relaxing on the patio in the backyard. For the latter 5 years, I have noticed my Easter Lily's sprouting earlier and earlier. This year, they were poking out of the ground in January when normally it would be mid to late March. .... He cropped and cooked some collards, he planted from seeds, a tad over 5 weeks ago. Currently we need to crop some more for they are over growing. I am on standby with the food vacuum sealer processor to freeze some of this bounty :D

This is going to be an interesting process. Personally, I am elated to witness the disbursement of corruption in this international sport.
