Russia threatens to aim nuclear missiles at Denmark ships if it joins NATO shield

COPENHAGEN - Russia threatened to aim nuclear missiles at Danish warships if Denmark joins NATO's missile defense system, in comments Copenhagen called unacceptable and NATO said would not contribute to peace.

Denmark said in August it would contribute radar capacity on some of its warships to the missile shield, which the Western alliance says is designed to protect members from missile launches from countries like Iran.

Moscow opposes the system, arguing that it could reduce the effectiveness of its own nuclear arsenal, leading to a new Cold War-style arms race.

In an interview in the newspaper Jyllands-Posten, the Russian ambassador to Denmark, Mikhail Vanin, said he did not think Danes fully understood the consequences of joining the program.

"If that happens, Danish warships will be targets for Russian nuclear missiles," Vanin told the newspaper.

Asked to respond, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said Denmark was a staunch member of the alliance and NATO would defend all allies against any threat.

"We have made clear that NATO's ballistic missile defense is not directed at Russia or any country, but is meant to defend against missile threats. This decision was taken a long time ago, so we are surprised at the timing, tone and content of the statements made by Russia's ambassador to Denmark," she said.

"Such statements do not inspire confidence or contribute to predictability, peace or stability," she added.

Tensions between Moscow and the West have grown since the imposition of economic sanctions on Russia over a pro-Russian rebellion in eastern Ukraine. NATO has recorded increased activity by the Russian navy and air force in the Nordic region.

No missiles are to be placed on Danish soil under the NATO program, but they could be deployed some day in Greenland, a part of the kingdom, according to Jyllands-Posten.

"Denmark will become a part of the threat against Russia. It will be less peaceful, and relations with Russia will be damaged," Vanin said, adding that Russia has missiles which would be able to penetrate the future missile shield.

Denmark's foreign minister Martin Lidegaard said Vanin's comments were unacceptable.

"Russia knows very well that NATO's missile defense is not aimed at them," Lidegaard told Jyllands-Posten.

NATO's top military commander, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, told a Brussels conference on Sunday that the comments from the Russian ambassador were the "next step" in a campaign against countries that joined the shield.

"Romania came under great pressure when they became a part of the (missile shield). Poland is coming under great pressure and now anyone else who wants to join in to this defensive capability will come under this diplomatic and political pressure," Breedlove said.

U.S. Boosts Military Presence in Gulf Waters as Iran Deal Inches Closer

Massive military exercise runs as major powers seek nuke deal

A Kuwait Navy rigid-hulled inflatable boat speeds toward U.S. Army Vessel “Corinth” as part of a visit, board, search and seizure scenario during Exercise Eagle Resolve March 17, 2015 / U.S. Air Force
BY:

Some 3,000 U.S. military personnel as well as American “air, land, sea, and special operations components” have moved into the Persian Gulf region for a military exercise that coincides with the finalization of a nuclear agreement with Iran aimed at containing its nuclear arms program, according to officials from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

The exercise, known as Eagle Resolve, has been taking place in Kuwaiti waters since March 8 and will run through the end of the month, when the United States is expected to announce a tentative framework agreement with Iran that is to serve as the final step toward a nuclear agreement.

This year’s exercise, which is taking place off Iran’s southern coast, “is the biggest to date,” according to a readout of the exercise provided by CENTCOM officials. Military representatives from more than a dozen U.S. allies are supporting the exercise.

The goal of the exercise, which has been in the works since January of last year, is to boost regional response time to potential incidents and practice tactical moves from the land, sea, and air, according to CENTCOM, which oversees military operations in the region.

“Eagle Resolve 2015 will consist of a week-long series of simulated ‘injects’ to exercise participants’ ability to respond as a multinational headquarters staff, followed by a series of tactical demonstrations of land, maritime, and air forces from several nations,” CENTCOM said in a fact sheet about the exercise provided to the Washington Free Beacon. “The exercise ends with a senior leader seminar to foster an environment for commanders to discuss issues of regional interest.”

While CENTCOM emphasized that the exercise is not meant to send a message to Iran, the timing is noteworthy. It comes as Iranian military leaders issue repeated threats to U.S. assets in the region and continue to unveil new weapons and warships aimed at combatting Western forces in the Gulf.

“The exercise is not intended as a signal to Iran,” a CENTCOM official told Sunday, ahead of the March 24 deadline for U.S. officials to reach a framework agreement with Iran. “If there’s any message at all, it’s that all participants have a common interest in regional security.”

“It’s important to point out that this is a recurring exercise, with planning for this year’s exercise beginning over a year ago,” the official said. “The focus of the exercise is on bolstering capabilities useful in a wide range of scenarios to help preserve and bolster regional security, with simulated portions of the exercise based on a fictional adversary.”

Sea-based weaponry has been a focus for Iran. The Islamic Republic secured an arms deal with Russia in January and sought submarines, torpedoes, and sea-based cruise missiles in order to boost its maritime power in the region.

Iranian warships also have been sailing across the region in a show of force meant to intimidate regional enemies and instill confidence in the Islamic Republic’s partner nations.

In keeping with this maritime military focus, Iran announced last week that it had begun to “mass produce” long range anti-ship cruise missiles, according to the country’s state-run PressTV.

“Today, we are simultaneously witnessing the launch of the mass production line and the delivery of this strategic and effective missile in the domain of defense and marine battle,” Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan was quoted as saying upon the announcement.

Iranian naval officials vowed in May to “destroy the U.S. Navy” and said that suicide attacks and drone strikes would be part of this strategy.

Michael Ledeen, an Iran expert and former consultant to the National Security Council (NSC), the State Department, and the Defense Department, said that many of the Gulf countries participating in the exercise are worried about Iran’s moves in the region.

“Most of the [Gulf Cooperation Council] countries are deeply skeptical of American resolve and reliability, and military-to-military relations are enormously important as the Iranian threat becomes more intense,” said Ledeen, a freedom scholar for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). “Yemen, after all, is right there, and Iranian control over that major choke point is a direct threat to GCC control over the major sea routes.”

The Eagle Resolve exercise will help manage border security for nations and tackle what CENTCOM calls “asymmetric threats.”

“This year’s Eagle Resolve exercise scenarios range from air defense concepts to border security operations and counterterrorism operations as well as consequence management,” the fact sheet states. “While participating nations have varying reasons for supporting Eagle Resolve, there is a common bond: we have a shared interest in regional security.”

A combination of U.S. tactical forces from the Army, Marines, and other branches are assisting with the exercise, according to a CENTCOM official briefed on the details.

U.S. forces and its military allies have practiced helicopter exercises, such as ship-based search and seizure operations. Forces also will run exercises to execute amphibious landings along with the Kuwaitis, according to the official.

Most of the U.S. military assets participating in the exercise have already been stationed in areas around the region.

“Eagle Resolve is an excellent opportunity to improve our ability to partner with Gulf and international forces at the operational level and identify best practices in countering asymmetric threats,” CENTCOM says.

This is the first time the Kuwaiti government has hosted the exercise.

DEAD MAN'S CURVE

WAR AND CHAOS AHEAD: HOW MEGA-RICH ARE PREPARING

Exclusive: Barrett Moore previews West's 'impending implosion of the empire of debt'

Published: 3 days ago

Candidly, I don’t have the time right now to be writing an article that most in the West would ignore or repudiate. I wrote this piece, however, for the staff of WND with whom I have consulted over the years. WND is one of the few news organizations in America that is interested in truth, and unconcerned with the consequences of reporting it. I admire that, and so should you. Few news organizations remain that are not just inundating us with misinformation and propaganda. But I digress.

We are at the precipice of war, and this is a call to action. While it might not come tomorrow, the threat does grow by the day as conflict between the largest and most powerful nation states becomes inevitable, driven by the impending implosion of the empire of debt accumulated by Western democracies, and by the yearning of Russia and China (and their surrogates) to escape the constraints of almost 70 years of American hegemony.

I am not talking about another one-sided skirmish in the desert, but rather a real war, where satellites fall from the sky, ships sink, supply chains are disrupted and there is a loss of life not seen since the last century; a war of such a magnitude that few Westerners alive today can comprehend it. Such a war will alter the world as we know it. And, reading the tea leaves, it seems there is little we could do now to stop it. At this stage, all that is missing is the spark that ignites the inferno. It might come tomorrow, it might delay a while longer. We can prepare, but preparation takes years and years, and requires a threshold level of certainty that the threat exists, that it merits attention, that it demands action.

Why do our kids’ novels and movies (“Hunger Games,” “Divergent”) assume a game-changing war, but writers and talking heads on our mainstream news sites and channels serve up mindless banter about the Kardashians, the climate, Twitter trends and gender engineering? Even thinking Americans have traded serious conversation about geopolitics for Facebook page updates, thereby providing every intelligence organization on the planet the opportunity to further profile them. We are sinking further and further into blind ignorance about how the world really works, even as we strengthen the powers threatening us.

Are you still with me? Then read on. You need to reprioritize your life today and start fulfilling the most important obligation you have to your family aside from serving God. It’s not your next vacation, a new car, or a club membership that I am talking about. No. It is the need to protect and provide for your family in a conflict situation where the supply chain no longer works. Do you think your wealth will protect you? Or that ready access to modern aircraft will make a difference? Or maybe you are fortunate enough to own a second home, or even a boat? I am sorry to say that these luxuries will prove all but useless when the coming storm arrives.

If you question my advice, then tell me, why did Mr. Jamie Dimon buy an island? Or why does Hank Paulson actually live on one? Or what about James Cameron, who up and moved to New Zealand? Or the thousands of bankers and hedge fund managers that have sought safety in havens throughout the Caribbean, and in Central and South America? Oh, you didn’t know about that? Or maybe you are having trouble placing those names? Well, Mr. Dimon is the current chairman and CEO of J.P. Morgan/Chase Bank. Mr. Paulson was the chairman of Goldman Sachs, before becoming the U.S. secretary of the Treasury. And Mr. Cameron is the director and creative genius behind the movie “Avatar,” among others – which made him a billion dollars or so. But don’t be envious. Based on my experience building havens, Mr. Dimon and Mr. Cameron overlooked some serious geopolitical threats during their haven selection process, and this is despite their huge resources, connections and intuition about where the world is going. In my opinion, Mr. Paulson made a wiser choice to stay in North America, and so have hundreds of others.

Let me explain further. You see, each of these very smart and successful people understands that the political leadership of our nation, irrespective of party affiliation, are as much in denial regarding the threats we face as they are wholly unprepared and ill-equipped to make the hard financial decisions that are essential to preserving our way of life. They recognize that we are steaming right along, business as usual, such that virtually every governmental action is partisan and is made without restraint or consequence, and that the population remains blissfully ignorant as to how this inability to change direction tightens the proverbial financial noose around our necks. Think about it – how many times have you heard a politician or member of the media comment about the size of our national debt and how our path is unsustainable? Yet nothing changes.

The WND Superstore’s Preparedness section has everything you’ll need to survive societal or natural upheaval – from freeze-dried meals to gas masks. Prepare now!

While it sounds like a joke, ask yourself, what is the difference financially between Greece and the United States? In many ways, very little. Both nations are broke, both are living well beyond their means, and both are hobbled by politicians incapable of making the hard (i.e., right) decision for their citizens. Think about the news lately. If it were not for the Federal Reserve and the ability of the U.S. Treasury to borrow with impunity, our leadership would be begging for loans from creditors, much like Greece is begging its EU creditors (read: Germany), for additional financial help.

In short, our leadership won’t change the trajectory we are on until they are forced to do so. Don’t listen to what they say, but observe what they do. For example, the Reagan, Bush (41), Clinton, Bush (43) and Obama administrations have each saddled the nation with successively larger and now record amounts of debt (and please, don’t give me any nonsense about Clinton not adding to the debt; he was just a little more clever about trying to market the narrative). We have all seen these numbers before, but, to refresh your memory, they are as follows (approximately):

[if · $18 trillion is the current cumulative budget deficit of the United States;

[if · $2 trillion is the approximate current annual increase in the U.S. budget deficit, if one looks beyond the published numbers and accounts for all federal expenditures;

[if · $200 trillion is a reasonable estimate of the U.S.’ additional unfunded liabilities for existing social programs;

[if · $16.8 trillion is the United States’ current GDP;

[if · $3.1 trillion is the total tax revenue the federal government derived in 2014.

Think about the implications. The federal government is spending $5-$5.5 trillion annually (using GAAP-adjusted accounting) yet taking in approximately $3.1 trillion in annual revenues. We are thus only paying for, roughly, 60 percent of expenditures; the rest is being borrowed. How would that go over in your household?

Yawn, you say, I have heard all this before and we are still here – what makes it different this time? Answer: The Federal Reserve has, in the last year, begun to monetize our national debt, which means we are buying our own debt back with borrowed (or newly created) dollars. So what? Well, this is the sign that sophisticated financial insiders have looked for as the beginning-of-the-end, and this is why they are preparing to flee their metropolitan bases of operation.

Bear with me while I explain: The insiders understand that the monetization of our debt will eventually drive an increase in interest rates, which will in turn increase the cost of the nation’s borrowing (think of it as an increase in the rate on your credit card), thus creating the need to spend more money to pay the increased interest cost to service the national debt, which increases the budget deficit, that in turn increases the need to borrow more money and monetize even more debt, eventually creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of increasing interest rates to attract more and more capital, which in turn increases the cost of servicing the underlying debt etc. etc.; eventually hastening the coming financial collapse insiders fear. Furthermore, they know the Federal Reserve’s current and careful balancing act is susceptible to an upset due to some black swan event that triggers a global financial panic, thereby ripping the legs out from under the debt-supported Western democracies with the United States at the hub of that collapsing wheel. What does this mean? No one is quite sure, but analysts predict a forced bank holiday, (i.e., the banks, including ATMS, close for some indefinite period of time), massive employment layoffs, disruptions of the usual supply chain (i.e., of truck and rail transportation of food, medicine and other staples), non-payment of pensions and social assistance programs (welfare) and the destruction of much of the nation’s paper-based wealth (i.e., your stock portfolio, among other assets), along with the emergence of broad social upheaval to include gangs, mobs, riots and other social disruptions. Remember that following the financial crisis in 2008, Mr. Paulson, as U.S. Treasury secretary, stated that at the time of the $700 billion bailout from the Federal Reserve, we were within 24 hours of the collapse of the global economy. If this information does not create a pit in your stomach, then perhaps this story will.

Are you prepared for any contingency in these uncertain times? Make sure you are with “SAFE: How to Protect Yourself, Your Family and Your Home”

While you were preparing to celebrate this past Christmas with your family, in mid-December 2014, hidden away on page 615 of a 1,603-page Continuing Resolution that was passed by Congress and signed by the president, there was a little-known provision that put the American taxpayer on the hook for derivative trading loses by major trading banks. What? Really? What does that mean? Well, our illustrious leaders thought it appropriate for the American taxpayer to guarantee any derivative trading loses the banks suffer, through subsidiaries that are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. In other words, the banks can continue to write, sell, and trade these sophisticated financial instruments, and profit from them, and, if they become financially untenable (read: BAD), walk away from them and let the American taxpayer wear the liability. Oh yes, I forgot to tell you the best part: These same banks currently have over $303 trillion of these financial instruments (derivatives) on their books.

Going just a bit deeper, remember (what my fourth-grader knows) that a trillion dollars is a thousand-billion dollars. Further, in 2014, the value of ALL the economic activity in the world, commonly referred to as the global domestic product, or GDP, was $72.6 trillion. So, yes, the guys on Wall Street figured out how to stick the federal government (read: you, the American taxpayer) with a potential further liability of $303 trillion, representing over four times the world’s entire GDP. And you wonder why Jamie Dimon bought an island?

I remind you of the adage of MI-5, the British Internal Security service: Western civilization is only four meals away from anarchy.

People like Dimon, Paulson and thousands of other members of the banking and financial communities recognize that during the financial crisis of 2008, our leadership did not make the hard decisions necessary to fix the system, but merely applied a $700 billion Band-Aid. By kicking the proverbial can down the path, they simply delayed and laid the groundwork for an even larger and broader crisis in the future. Hence the reason that so many have established havens where they can ride out the coming financial tsunami that will envelop the world; while others have killed themselves, with some 60 odd bankers/financiers dying either by their own hand or under mysterious circumstances in the last couple years.

So this is the lens through which many in the financial and banking industry look. They know the system is untenable, yet they know they have been provided a once-in-a-generation opportunity to legally make obscene sums of money. (Note: Many won’t admit this fact; they just think they are (were) much smarter than everyone else.) Yet they know that it is mathematically and financially impossible for the United States, much less all the other Western democracies, to repay the mountains and mountains of debt they have borrowed to finance our lifestyles. They have resigned themselves that a collapse is inevitable. They don’t yet know the date, the time, or the ferocity of that collapse, but they intend to use their wealth to insulate themselves as best they can, e.g., by buying an island in the South Pacific, stocking it well and hiring a bunch of Navy SEALs for protection.

What I believe most people overlook is that politicians will always be politicians, and there is no way they will ever allow themselves to be blamed for the excesses of the last 30-odd years. Think about it. If a collapse were to take place, the politicians would need to hide from the citizens who lose everything. Literally. What would you do if, in a matter of days, you lost almost everything you had worked for during your entire life, including your pension, IRA, Social Security benefits, insurance benefits, etc.?

Don’t be caught unprepared! Order Gen. Russel Honoré’s book “Survival: How a Culture of Preparedness Can Save You and Your Family from Disasters”

Interestingly, the government has done much to protect itself. Or might I rephrase that statement to say that our government leaders have done a great deal to protect themselves and their families. Over the course of the last two decades alone, the federal government spent hundreds of billions of dollars designing, building and refining an elaborate Continuity of Government Plan (COG) that consists of over 100 classified facilities designed to protect the leadership of the nation during crisis – any crisis, of any magnitude and any duration.

Oh, you say, you have not received the briefing necessary, nor been issued the credentials by FEMA or DOD, to access one of these facilities? Well, don’t feel bad, you are in the same situation as most Americans … unprepared and suffering from Normalcy Bias. All the while the Russians have built the most formidable offensive (nuclear) rocket force in the history of mankind and have increased their investments in their impenetrable Yamantau mountain complex that is rumored to be over 400 square miles in size. (Yes, miles). The Chinese have made similar investments in offensive nuclear capability, including the construction of 3,000 miles of underground tunnels to protect their populace. In the meantime, and particularly under the current administration, the United States accelerates its voluntary disarmament.

So where am I going with this? Where we started, or should I say, where it ends. War. Unfortunately, this is the only way that no one group can be held accountable for decades of poor decision making and the financial calamity that is upon us. Whether they be bankers, politicians, or their advisers, they are all culpable. They are, however, way too connected and way too smart to take any blame for the coming financial collapse.

Other players are emerging on the world stage who have their own agenda and will likely facilitate, or at the very least, take advantage of, the financial crisis that looms over the West. Most Americans are ill-equipped to recognize such threats, much less foresee their logical outcome. In follow-on articles, I hope to explore specific geopolitical threats the United States faces and why our cultural blinders prevent us from acknowledging or preparing for them.

“The Dead Man’s Curve” is an expression used by helicopter pilots to describe a particular flight profile where the aircraft is flown so low and slow that, if the engine were to quit, the pilot would surely die, as there would be insufficient altitude to complete an autorotation.

Due to the monetary house-of-cards outlined here, and the confluence of growing geopolitical threats, political impotence and pressing cultural change, the United States and most other Western democracies are operating well within “The Deadman’s Curve.”

You have been warned. Recalibrate your mindset. Now prepare.

MASS SAD EVENTS

From sea lions to penguin chicks, adorable animals are dying in droves

We know and love sea lions for their soulful eyes and playful antics — they’re basically the golden retrievers of the ocean. But recently, sea lions have been making headlines for much sadder reasons: Droves of malnourished sea lion pups have been washing up all over the Southern Californian coast. More than 1,450 pups have stranded without their mothers since January, reported the Washington Post.

The cause? Starvation.

Warmer waters off the coast of California are likely driving away sea lions’ prey such as squid, anchovies, and sardines, said Justin Viezbicke, stranding services coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As a result, mother sea lions are having to go further from birthing grounds — usually around the Channel Islands — to forage for food, meaning that pups probably don’t get enough nutrients from their mothers when they return. The pups then wean off their mothers earlier and are underweight when they leave the island, likely to find food of their own.

“They’re leaving with a low tank of gas and there’s really not much out there to help them out,” said Viezbicke. “They’re jumping into … a challenging environment and then they’re ending up washing ashore on the mainland, starving.”

Organizations like NOAA and other animal rescue programs have been taking in pups and feeding them — but that’s only a stopgap measure.

“This is something that’s naturally occurring out there, so there’s really not much we can do other than watch and learn from the situation,” Viezbicke said. “We can’t really prevent or stop it, unfortunately.”

Left to their own devices, these stranded sea lion pups probably wouldn’t make it. (No judgement if you need a tissue here. I’ll wait.)

Fred Hochstaedter

As sad as it sounds, starvation events and mass mortality events (in which vast numbers of animals die), are becoming more and more common in this wacky, warming world. Thanks to a number of large-scale, systemic alterations (lookin’ at you, El Niño and warming ocean temps), the world’s ecosystems hang in a delicate balance.

Meet the Cassin auklet — a pudgy, fist-sized seabird with crescent-shaped eye markings and pale blue feet. They’re pretty dang cute. And thousands of them are washing up dead along the West Coast — all the way from Northern California to British Columbia.

“My volunteers alone … have found 7,000 carcasses [over the last four months],” said Julia Parrish, executive director of the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) at the University of Washington. “It’s a scary big number.”

Like the sea lions, auklets are literally dying for a meal. The birds primarily feed on zooplankton or krill. However, in the last year, a mass of warm water — very scientifically named “the blob” — drove the usual Pacific krill into deeper waters and brought in a host of zooplankton that the auklets don’t eat, reported Audubon Magazine.

When a high number of birds wash ashore dead, the events are called “wrecks.” Generally speaking, smaller wrecks are fairly normal, Parrish explained. If there’s a storm out at sea, it’s not unusual for seabirds caught in its path to die, whether from starvation or storm conditions, and later wash up on beaches. That’s just how it goes.

But this time, something is different. “This is the biggest wreck we’ve ever seen in the 16 years we’ve been doing this work,” Parrish said. “I think it’s probably the largest wreck we’ve seen on West Coast … That makes me sit up and take notice.”

This winter’s wreck could be especially bad if enough of the dead auklets turn out to be adults, because an entire reproductive group may have been wiped out. They won’t know for sure until the birds return to their breeding grounds. Until then, it’s a lot of waiting and counting dead birds.

So is this climate change at play? Scientists are hesitant to say.

Dee Boersma, a conservation scientist and founder of the Penguin Sentinels Project at UW, compares the vulnerability of seabirds to weather and climate to the vulnerability of a human crossing a busy street: You could get hit by a truck, but it doesn’t happen every time. And just as it’s hard to predict exactly how likely you are to survive a street-crossing as a human, the same goes for storms and their effects on Magellanic penguins, she said.

In 2014, Boersma and other penguin researchers published a study in PLOS ONEwhich found that climate change was directly responsible for the deaths of more than 200 Magellanic penguin chicks from 1983 to 2010 in Punta Tombo, Argentina. There, climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of storms, while lowering the reproductive success of Magellanic penguins, the study reported.

During the 27-year-long study, young penguins perished at a high rate due to a combination of starvation and overexposure during exceptionally rainy and hot seasons. The chicks’ feather coats keep them cozy when they are dry, but that changes when they get wet: The fluffy down isn’t waterproof, like adult penguin feathers. So if a penguin chick gets caught in the rain during a storm, it’s like a human “being stuck outside and naked in a wet sleeping bag … the penguins basically die of hypothermia like you or I would,” said Boersma.

Plus, a lack of food leaves the chicks unprepared to cool themselves down when things heat up, since they rely on the food their parents bring them for all of their water. Without adequate hydration, the chicks can’t depend on evaporation to keep cool and become vulnerable to heat stress.

It’s a lethal combination: Over the course of the study, an average of 65 percent of the Punta Tombo chicks died every year, with about 40 percent dying of starvation.

So what was that about climate change again? Mass animal die-offs and starvation epidemics are shocking no matter what, even to hardened scientists. Climate change is just exacerbating these kinds of things.

“The fact is that we have populations responding to warming events, whether the warming is temporary or inexorable,” said Parrish, the researcher studying the dying auks.

The world’s ecosystems are hanging on as best they can, but small things can throw them out of balance. It’s unfair to compare the temperatures that a wild ecosystem can withstand to the temperatures humans can, because we have tools and technology on our side. “Wildlife needs habitat,” Parrish said. “In today’s crowded world, habitat only exists in certain places — places that we protect. And when the climate warms, those places change.”

“[Even one degree] is a huge deal,” Parrish points out. To understand and support conservation efforts, humans need to “think like a fish, a clam, or an oyster, and not like a person.”

Guess it’s time to get in touch with your inner oyster or auklet — getting hungry yet?

Fears ISIS are plotting First World War-style chlorine gas attacks on UK commuters

Retired head of chemical weapons for the Army and NATO Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon said such an attack is “highly likely”

Islamic State fanatics returning to Britain could be plotting horrifying attacks using chlorine gas which killed thousands of troops during the First World War.

The warning has been given by one of the world’s top experts in chemical warfare, Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, the retired head of chemical and biological weapons for the British Army and NATO.

After returning from advising security forces in Baghdad last week, he said he feared
an attack by returning jihadis using knowledge of chlorine gas-filled IEDs is “highly likely”.

Danger haul: Colonel Hamish with drug gang chemicals in 2007; today, bottom right; and ISIS leader Abu Bakr

He added: “This could happen on a train or tube or even at a big football match.

"Acquiring weapons and ammunition is very difficult in the UK but you can get up to 90,000 tonnes of chlorine without any licence.

"In a confined space if you saw this yellow and green gas cloud and started smelling it the panic would create carnage.”

The chilling alert comes days after the 20th anniversary of the attack on the Tokyo subway when extremists released the deadly gas sarin on several tube lines.

And it follows increasing fears IS thugs are stockpiling chemical weapons for a bloody last stand against troops fighting to kick them out of Iraq.

Spies believe the network’s ruthless leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has ordered his followers to encourage an all-out attack in Europe.

Horror: Aftermath of 1995 sarin gas attack in Tokyo

Mr de Bretton-Gordon revealed hundreds of crude chlorine IEDs – which cause choking – are now being used extensively by IS in the defence of Tikrit.

Iraqi security forces are convinced chlorine bombs are being prepared to defend Mosul, Iraq’s second city.

When
IS overran Mosul last June it seized a huge chlorine factory and Iraqi forces believe it is stockpiling material for a deadly last stand. There are also fears IS has even deadlier mustard gas and sarin.

It would be the first time IS have used chemical weapons on a truly huge scale.

Mr de Bretton-Gordon said: “Islamic State are all over these chemical weapons. The big prize is Mosul, its capital in Iraq. Lose it and they lose the country and have to retreat to Syria.”

The Mirror recently revealed SAS forces in Iraq have been ordered to take chemical weapons suits.

Now managing director of Avon Protection, Mr de Bretton-Gordon has advised the UK government, Iraqi government and Free Syrian Army.

He added: “Syrian President al Assad used sarin in 2013 when about to be over-run. IS have seen this and Mosul could be their last stand. They have no boundaries in awfulness.”

One intelligence source said: “Islamic State definitely wants a spectacular in the West – to build on fear it generated in the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.

"Its favourite place would be a transport hub, with footage of the aftermath likely to be broadcast on the internet spreading horror worldwide.”

Next month is the 100th anniversary of the first use of gas in modern war. The German Army deployed chlorine at Ypres, killing 6,000 Allied troops, mainly from asphyxiation and lung damage.
