A Wiser Adviser...

Hey my friends,

I have had this article stashed away for a long time and found it this weekend.  I felt an overwhelming need to share it with you.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I continuously do.

Joe

A Wiser Adviser...

HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED how wise you are when you give advice to a person younger than you?  You aren’t fooling yourself.  You really have gained some wisdom over the years.  Have you ever wished you could be that wise when you had troubles?  You can.  You can talk to yourself like a “Dutch uncle.”

Randall Masciana, M.S., tried to find out what kind of mental strategy would improve a person’s performance when throwing darts.  Masciana had the participants try everything from mental imagery to Zen.  What worked best for improving the dart thrower’s ability to hit the target was “positive self-talk.”

Simply talking to yourself in a confident, reassuring, positive, friendly way makes a difference.  It may be trite.  It may be old.  But it works, and it works better than anything else.

When things get tough, keep your thoughts prominent.  Turn up the volume of your inner voice so you can hear it clearly and coach yourself.  If you don’t know what to say, imagine a friend of yours or your little brother in the same situation and say to yourself what you would say to them.

Another way of knowing what to say to yourself is to ask yourself what someone you admire would say to you: Abraham Lincoln, a professor, your grandmother — whomever you admire for her or his wisdom and strength of character.  Imagine asking the person for advice and imagine what s/he might say to you.

You know more about your own situation than anyone else, so your advice to yourself is in some ways more useful than anyone else’s.  You are wise.  If you would only talk to yourself and listen, your life would be better.

Thank you, Joe.

That is very good advice.  It was wise of you to share it!  It's a struggle sometimes to turn up the volume of that inner voice.  Outside forces, happenings, circumstances scream sometimes and the volume of the inner voice has to be turned up loud enough to overcome it - it takes FOCUS!!

What a sweetie you are to share this.

Hugs and blessings,

Judy

Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone!                                              it is so true I know because most of the time I get really good advice from myself because I know what would be the best for me to do in my situation and though at times it might be hard to hear that inner voice it is so worth it to listen to it and also to take the time think things through whlie listening to that inner voice is the best thing we can do.
Blessings to everyone!

Hi Joe,

Great article!

Ah, advices!

I have maybe an unusual way to search for advices. If I am in need to be adviced .... very often I use slow walk along streets and just pay attention on billboards .... subjects of the newspapers and magazines .... titles of books ... also paying attention on all words spoken beside, by  other people  ... and ALWAYS I FIND AN ADVICE!!! In those moments seems my eyes and ears are in action ... and they never cease to do most for me.

Very seldom I ask others to give an advice.

One part of myself I use to call MY SILENT BEING ... It must be this one, supported with eyes and ears, do most for me.

Thank you Joe and have a great week!

Lilly

"Your own mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except by your promotion."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the great Article.  Most definitely words to live by.  As I was explaining to a Friend just the other day...

Seriously though, our Creator has provided each of us with the most powerful problem solving device available anywhere, one that no one here on Earth could ever replicate.  He expects us to use it, and He has even sent His Holy Spirit into our hearts to guide us from day to day.  That's all of the advice that any of us needs.

Finally, as that wise man Mr. Emerson says above, the only way that harmful, negative thoughts can enter our minds is with our permission.  Why in the world would we ever let them in?

Have A Blessed & Beautiful Day,

Phil
