This section contains entries for some of the more important scholarly
contributions pertaining to the origins of the name "Shasta." This section also
contains a selection of primary documents, from the 1830s and 1840s, which serve
to illustrate the wide variety of past uses of "Shasta" as a name for various
mountains, rivers, and peoples. Taken as a whole, the entries in this section
have been grouped together to draw attention to the fact that there is a
