Not Enough of the Right Bacteria Could Cause Obesity

A novel health study on human bacteria could lead to new treatments for obesity, replacing the classic measures of diet and exercise.

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis came up with the idea to compare bacteria in overweight and slim people. They proceeded to study fecal matter from 12 obese persons over a year-long period, while the subjects kept strict diets.

Intestinal Bacteria May Explain Obesity

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ The microorganisms that live in your gut could explain one of the sources of obesity, says a new study from researchers at Washington University.

Bacteria live throughout the body, but some intestinal bacteria appear to be better than others at helping their hosts turn food into energy, say researchers Buck S. Samuel and Dr. Jeffrey I. Gordon.

They believe changing the mix of bacteria in the intestine could influence how much people weigh.

Bacteria and archaea, another kind of single-celled organism, are common in the human intestine. Researchers are discovering that together, they help their human hosts extract calories and nutrients from food.

David, thank you for your invitation!

This time it is microorganisms' fault in people's obesity:-)

Maybe there is a piece of truth in this hypothesis. But what can you tell about Chinese seniors? They look younger, they are flexible, they are slim, they are happier!

Today I received HealthBeat magazine. Here what was said in one article:

CHINESE SENIORS ENJOY A MENTAL AND PHYSICAL QUALITY OF LIFE THAT IS DECADES LONGER THAN OURS

"China has practiced good health for more than 4,000 years," said Liu Jun, M.D.

"Many students come to China to learn Chinese medicine. We promote good circulation, especially for older people. Our older people are very energetic and very youthful,' Jun continued. " We don't have a healthcare system, what we have is disease management. We have made great success in treating diabetes. We use natural herbal medicine. It's good for the entire body. Ginseng is the king of the herbal world. It's good for everything. It slows down the aging process, which is caused by kidney function coming down.

Ginseng slows down the onset of Alzheimer's and dementia," he continued. "Alzheimer's is almost non-existent in China. And, we don't need Viagra."

Is not this opportunity to stay healthier and younger exciting?

David, Thank you for presenting the subject and introducing the nice site. There are several articles of interest there. This is a good site to put on favoirites for further good health news. Exteme obesity is a terrible disability. A good friend of mine has trouble walking, thinks only of food and good cooking, trouble breathing and has to limit activies because of these problems. Whenever I am around her I observe that she eats no different from any of us.

Excellent article David. I think it is our benefit to be living in a time when so much evidence is coming out about how to live a healthy life. It is great to have a health products business as I was at a party the other night and learned my friend's husband is dying of cancer. My first thought was getting the Immune Tea to him and will see if she wants to proceed. Merry Christmas! Danielle
