Why do you find dead links in sites at the top of Google?

Good question. Not all dead links are equally dead. As I'm sure you know: Nothing works all the time. A link that is dead today may work tomorrow. If the link has been dead for months it would make me wonder. I don't think they calculate everything daily.

It makes me wonder too.
Why would they spend all that time
optimizing and getting all their ducks
in a row and let their domain name go?

I think sometimes they stay in the cache
for a long time...they need to clean out the
cache more often and make room for my site.LOL

I've never gone back to check to see how long it took for a site to get back online, if at all.

Exactly. I would think most people don't.
But sometimes firefox will say a link is dead
when it's not also, so I usually try it at least
once more. But whoa unto those who have sites
set up with all the right keywords, all the best links
coming back, best meta tags, etc... and their site
shows up dead in the  water because they're using
another browser and don't want to take time to check.

No telling how many visitors they're missing.
