Should Children Witness Childbirth?
9/25/2006 3:16:29 PM

Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very, very dark, so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3-year-old girl, to hold the light high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby. Very diligently Kathleen did as she was asked.

Her mother Heidi pushed and pushed, and after a little while Connor was born.

The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his

bottom. Connor began to cry The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her

help and asked the wide-eyed 3-year-old what she thought about what she had just witnessed.

Kathleen quickly responded, "He shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place. Smack his ass again."

Hi, Chris, This is a wonderful story and, although funny, illustrates something that we, as adults, have forgotten. The world of the child. Because I have worked and lived for a long time with children, I feel that I still live in a child's world. I love to join in fairy or elf hunts, I have discovered the houses built by maggots inside apples, I have spent hours watching ants caring for and milking aphids, I believe Pinocchio became a real boy, angels live by my bed at night and I still have the ability to tell stories and frighten myself. The sights that children see are not full of the associations placed upon them by adults so this little girl's comment (at 3 years of age) is superbly logical - he shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place! How sad that we sometimes destroy the innocence by the urge to explain. Regards Arthur
