Steel is heated to be tempered. What is in the core determines whether it will temper of fall apart. Obviously you are made to be tempered.
One of the greatest compliments I could imagine any man being given is that he is a man of steel and velvet.
A man that has gone through what you have and can write such a wonderful poem is a man of steel and velvet.
