Re: FTC Compliant Ad Copy 101

This forum is a must read for anyone who is trying to market anything, online or otherwise.  Due Diligence is not something preached here enough.  The FTC and the SEC mean business now a days.  After several big and publically damning episodes this year (who didn't get burned in Feburary...) these organizations are finally looking at the field of internet based business.  Frankly, it is about time.  If the FTC and the SEC crack down a bit, maybe so many new marketers won't get burned.

Always, always, always, always exercise some personal responsibilty and do your homework.  trust, me it pays off.

Excellent work, Lisa.  Keep it up.

yours for the future, melissa http://thewritetimes.com The Adland Interviews : http://community.adlandpro.com/forums/17189/ShowForum.aspx

Hello Cheryl!

You are most welcome! It's good to share knowledge that we've learned along the road.

Uh, yeah, I've written lots of really bad ads too. But practice makes perfect.

Thanks for stopping by!

Toodles,

Lisa :)

Hi ya Philip!

Boy it would be awesome to have a team of ad copy agents at my disposal. Too Cool! But alas, my budget is so tight it squeaks. LOL!

I totally agree, 7 sessions is a good number, to do re-writes. You want the ad to sound just perfect when you read it. (or in your case, see it)

I know that the commercials on TV actually do "test runs" of different commercials. Each commercial will be pretty much the same, but they change characters; like from a man to a woman or visa-versa. Or locations of the shoot. They track which commercial pulls more sales, and thats the one they go with long term.

I understand your skepticism. It takes time, patience and a creative brain to write ad copy. But I've known people who have taught themselves the art of copywriting, and write for a living now. How cool is that!

Thanks for stopping by Philip!

Toodles,

Lisa :)

Hey Robert!

Thanks for stopping by. :)

Whilst I agree that copywriting is mostly art and part science, I truly agree that anyone can write. You are the perfect example. You, being from a technical background, but you still taught yourself the art of writing through trial and error. I am natural born writer. I've been writing for almost 30 years. It's been a passion of mine for a very long time. But writing ad copy, some days, is still a great challenge for me.

Yes! Human emotion is the key for sure. There are also what are called "buzz words". Buzz words are single or even phrases that catch the readers attention. I think that probably the most common buzz word would have to be "FREE". Free always catches my eye, at least.

Writing ad copy to a specific group of people is an excellent tip.  If you are selling fishing poles, you wouldn't want to be targeting your ads to gardners, would you?

How about a link for your ezine? I'm sure there a number of folks that would appreciate your teachings.

Toodles,

Lisa :)
