Hello Florence,
Equine COPD also known as Heaves or an asthma attack is a disease that has been recognized for centuries. It is common in countries with cold climates such as ours, where horses are kept in barns for prolonged periods of time.
COPD is recognised by attacks of heavy laboured breathing with sweating and distress. It can be caused by allergic reactions to dust and/or mold in their hay or bedding, removal of these molds allows a remission of the disease. This is best achieved by replacing the hay by dust free food, such as pelleted hay, haylage etc.
I suggest doing one or more of the following. Move the horse out of the stable into the paddock where there is less dust or place a bucket of hot water containing a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the stable - remember do not allow the horse to drink this water.
One other treatment is to give the horse Ester-C powder in bulk form. The only problem is health food stores do not sell this in bulk form and many people have a hard time locating it!
So, those are the only natural remedies that I am aware of other than having the horse wear a special breathing mask. Just make sure to ventilate the stable well, or put the horse out to pasture if possible.
If none of this helps you will have to call a vet and have them administer an anti-inflammatory medicine.
I hope that this helps you and your horse out!
God Bless,
Marilyn
