"

Fake accounts on social networking sites aren’t a new thing. Facebook have been trying to prevent and block fake accounts for sometime, but recently there seems to have been an influx new fake accounts.

Open networkers aren’t just on Linkedin – there are those of us who love to connect to new and interesting people on many networks – the more the merrier, but its really time to be a bit more careful about who we connect with.

As we discussed recently in a Xeeme group, these accounts might be created for many reasons, these fakers could be looking to either collect information from us or steal information to sell to the highest bidder."

The dangers of Fake Accounts on Social Networking Sites?

Victoria Police is accused of using fake social media accounts

"Vctoria police are reviewing their use of social media after a staff member was accused of using hundreds of fake accounts to manage the force’s Facebook presence.

Kieran Bennett, a Melbourne activist, accused a Victoria police employee of setting up “at least 300” fake accounts to manage the force’s sprawling Facebook presence in a blog post published on Tuesday.

He told Guardian Australia he had traced hundreds of apparently fake Facebook profiles used to manage the police’s network of community-specific Eyewatch pages back to the personal account of a Victoria Police staff member"

"Facebook boasts about having 845 million monthly active users and further 425 million monthly active mobile users as of December 31, 2011. It revealed these figures while the social network filed for its $5 billion initial public offering (IPO). But it turns out that between 42.25 million and 50.70 million of these accounts on Facebook are actually fake according to ZDNet. This is the first time that Facebook has revealed this number admitting that the social network might really not enjoy all real people."
