One of the most enjoyable weeks of my year was spent on a remote Scottish island, learning to surf.

Messing around in the waves with my kids, focusing on trying to master a new skill, the joy of finally being able to stand up on the board (although I must admit, not for long!) put me to bed each night feeling exhausted but happy.

I didn't do a jot of work while on holiday (the Inner Hebrides are not known for their broadband strength) but when I came back I was a productivity machine!

My energy levels exploded, I zipped through my tasks and brainstormed some great ideas with the team.

It got me thinking - it's so easy getting stuck in the same routine.

Doing the same thing, day in and out, keeping to the same hobbies you had as a teenager.

And when you do, life starts to lose its sparkle and feel colourless.

That's when trying something new can really shake things up inside your head.

Of course, it doesn't have to be as radical as spending a whole week learning a new skill.

Just taking a night class, reading a book you normally wouldn't, joining in on something you'd habitually avoid all has the same effect.

It wakes you up and gets you starting to see everything in a new way.
