I am pleased to show here and in my next post two extremely contrasting but equally impressive scenes painted by Bouguereau during the same early decade of his artistic activity. This one, executed at the beginning of it, shows the exuberant happiness two young lovers may feel in an exquisite, charming environment.

This other masterpiece, also executed with supreme ability but at the same time with extreme soberness, expresses the tearing sadness that relatives may feel at the tomb of a dear one. It was painted toward the end of that early decade 1850-59.

Thanks for your posts, friends. Yes, Bouguereau was exceptionally endowed as an artist. He also excelled in drawing and of course, he was superb at portraits. Below is a fine example of it: An extraodinary portrait of Charles Garnier, a fine painter like Bouguereau himself but also a great architect back then.
