This particular masterpiece must have arose huge admiration among Bouguereau's colleagues and erudite public in general when exhibited for the first time - not only for its beauty and artistic attributes but also for the explicit symbolism it conveys.

I don't know what the symbolism is -but these girls look like petulant teenagers:)
Shows that girls that age seem to be always upset at the world no matter their position in life!

Thanks for coming back, dear Joyce (my only guest so far). Yes, now the girls may look to us as you say, but back then they probably were seen as pretty good images of the Art and Literature goddesses of old. There was a sort of Greek Mythology revival within the learned circles and I can imagine how deeply admired they would be by their main representatives (I may be wrong of course, lol).
