A Social Thought about marketing and social media

Has social media changed enough to welcome marketers?

Not too long ago I had created a Facebook Status which was work related and the reactions I received were far from favorable in fact a lynch mob was going to come after me if I didn't smarten up and get with the program. ( MY kids were a lot more blunt than that btw)

In the back of my mind I have been mulling over what could have gone wrong, I had worded the status so well, I was nice and I wasn't overtly marketing ..or was I?

I read a comment on a post today that had me turn the light bulb on
"When on Facebook people are logged in for a variety of reasons, but it's typically to escape "work" and stay connected via quick conversations, share funny and entertaining posts, view photos, videos and music."

Thanks to CraigF for some great insight and one I hope you are all reading and heeding.

Then question then becomes if we are to market on social media how the heck are we supposed to this, how do we measure our success and why not sell on social media..there are a lot of people there!!

Instead of going into a long song and dance about the whys or the why nots of using social media to market, I think I will get you to read
Why Marketers Get Social Media Wrong by Jason Falls. What he said a year ago is what a lot of people are saying today.
As he put on his post

"Understanding why the audience is participating on these networks and in this channel is fundamental to how you measure it, compare it to other channels and view success with it."

From my personal point of view, I have always viewed social networks as a way to get known ( brand recognition) where the priority was to listen more than you speak.

While I still feel this way, I have noticed more and more that the people on the various sites are now asking questions, looking for help to solve a problem.

Like everything, social networking on social places is indeed changing..but is it enough of a change to make it worth while for the marketer?

What do you think?

Good question Diane.
As you know I am involved daily in the BUSINESS side of social media.
I have a Profile on Facebook and Google+ but also several (almost 18) commercial pages and the Facebook and Google+ platform allows your to speak as YOU or your "Brand".
Also the use of lists, that segment your friends based on their Likes and Avocations, allows you to send a status direct at ONLY those people
We discuss these techniques weekly on our, now 6 years running, Business Development Talk Show.
Our I have been know to have "private" Sessions with groups of serious minded marketers wishing to Fine Tune their skills

Hi Chuck. Have you noted that many people who are going into marketing online they either start or join groups/communities with no concepts of talking, sharing or learning. They feel that their purpose is to blast ads no matter what on the off chance that someone will click on their link... I would love to change that mindset and I have to say that even though Adlandpro has their share of the mindless marketers, there are so many more who want to learn better, long lasting and solid practices.

.. I am getting off topic ( lol on my own forum ..now that's bad!)

When I started to notice that people (and I mean ordinary everyday people) were asking questions, wanting help etc., is when I realized that more and more people on social networks, especially Facebook are turning from social to searchers. If we can understand that thinking, listen and then act, then I believe that marketing..done right is going to transform the social landscape as we see it today.
We are always going to have our favorite places to be social..but along with that social will be buying and selling... #justmythoughts

Again I agree, Diane.

I started a Community 9 years ago "Beginners Marketing Class", derived the book we co-authored with Bogdan.
It was $100 for lifetime membership and we masterminded like crazy on the Talk Show and in a Forum (over 5,000 forum entries and no soliciting).
The core group have almost all moved on building successful businesses..

New comers did not accept the name well.
Guess no one wants to be a Beginner today.

But we now have You Can Build It, Your Business. The Private Community on Google+ that allows anyone to ask any form of question without feeling in the spotlight, or just as important, offer help to others.

Free copies of Volume I, Provision Your Ship are available upon signing up to our occasional Newsletter
