The Selection of Grinding Media

Since the fineness demand of materials is becoming higher, so the using of grinding mill is much more universal. Furthermore, there are many kinds of grinding medium in the current market, so how to choose a more suitable grinding medium means a lot. The following are simple analysis about grinding medium from several aspects:

1. The chemical composition

The grinding medium can be classified into several kinds according to the different materials, they are glass beads, ceramic beads (including zirconium silicate beads, composite zirconium beads, alumina beads, zirconia beads), steel beads and so on.

The differences of chemical composition and manufacturing process determined the crystal structure of grinding beads. The dense crystal structure guaranteed the high strength, high wear resistance and low oil absorption of the beads.

Different proportion of various components determined the proportion of grinding beads. A high proportion grinding means high efficiency, but the wear and tear, as well as influence on materials should also be taken into consideration. Such as grinding tape pulp powder or other electronic components, metals Fe, Cu and other elements should be avoided; such as grinding pesticide, medicine and biochemistry, heavy metals is contraindicated ingredients.

2. Physical properties

Typically, the greater the proportion of the grinding beads, the greater impulse and kinetic energy, the higher grinding efficiency;

Low density grinding beads for low viscosity materials, high density grinding beads suitable for high viscosity materials;

The higher the hardness, the less wear bead itself, but the wear of the contacts is relatively large;

Theoretically, the smaller the diameter of the grinding beads, the higher grinding fineness, but the premise must be carried by the energy ball milling to meet the requirements.

In short, the selection of grinding media while considering the physical properties (hardness, density, wear resistance, volume); other hand, considering the chemical properties, environmental factors.
