SOTT Earth Changes Summary - March 2019: Extreme Weather, Planetary Upheaval, Meteor Fireballs

nebraska flooding march 2019

Biblical flooding in Nebraska, March 2019
March 2019 was another month of significant extreme weather events, with record-breaking flooding, hailstorms, snowfalls and wildfires - on every continent, no matter the season.

While the media hypes the pseudo-scientific claim that climate change is man-made and whose effects should really only concern future generations, here and now the climate is shifting - and, besides mitigating some of its effects, there is nothing governments can do to prevent this shift from happening.

Among the 'highlights' in March were catastrophic flooding in the US Midwest after a 'winter hurricane' inundated much of the US with snow and rain. Nebraska was especially hardest hit as two-thirds of the state became an inland sea. Of the multiple powerful cyclones in the southern hemisphere last month, one caused unprecedented flooding in southeastern Africa and killed 1,000 people.

Huge dust-devils, 'snownados', 'thundersnow', and deluges of hail and rain occur with such regularity now, they're practically 'normal'. The same goes for spectacular meteor fireball events, which - after a decade of not seeing them - even the mainstream media reports on these days.

All that, and more, in this month's SOTT Earth Changes Summary...

US designates Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as terrorist organization – Trump

Published time: 8 Apr, 2019 14:16
Edited time: 8 Apr, 2019 17:10

The US has designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a “terrorist organization,” accusing the elite force of financing and promoting terrorism in the region. Tehran is now eyeing a mirror response for the American military.

A statement from Donald Trump released Monday claimed: “This unprecedented step, led by the Department of State, recognizes the reality that Iran is not only a State Sponsor of Terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft.”

The move marks the first time the US has ever designated part of another government as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). Any support or business with the unit will amount to “bankrolling terrorism,” the statement reads further.

In a direct response, the Iranian Supreme Security Council branded the US “a terrorist government” and labeled the US Central Command (CENTCOM) and “all its affiliates” as a terrorist group.

Speaking after Trump’s announcement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also held a press conference on the matter, explaining that the US designation is set to take effect in one week.

Pompeo accused the IRGC of “masquerading” as a legit military force, while “actively engaging” in terrorism for 40 years. The force “organizes and executes terror campaigns around the world” and is working to destabilize the Middle East region, namely Syria, Iraq, Yemen and other countries, according to Pompeo.

Notably, while Iran has indeed a limited contingent of "military advisers" in Syria, the troops were deployed there to aid the fight against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists and on the invitation of Damascus. To the contrary, the presence of American military in Syria was branded illegal by the local government.

What’s more, despite ravaging Iraq twice and killing tens of thousands of Iraqis, the US labeled Iran’s“expansionism” as the main danger for the country, as well as accusing IRGC’s “proxies” of killing over 600 US servicemen.

Meanwhile, US National Security Advisor John Bolton did not pull punches on Iran either, taking to Twitter to reiterate Trump’s statement, with a bit of a personal touch. The official claimed that while the elite force "invests" in terrorism, ordinary people of Iran “suffer.”

Today’s unprecedented move to designate the IRGC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization demonstrates our commitment to maximize pressure on the Iranian regime until it ceases using terrorism as tool of statecraft. The corrupt IRGC invests in terrorism, while Iran’s people suffer.

Yet, Bolton may have somewhat jumped the gun here. As the Middle East state has been recently suffering from massive flash flooding, it was Washington’s sanctions that prevented foreign aid coming in.

The restrictions have been lambasted by Iran as “economic terrorism” and also denounced by the Red Crescent, which called them “inhumane.”

Tit for tat: Iran’s Supreme Security Council puts US troops on its terrorist groups list

Following what it called an “unlawful and unreasonable action” of the US, Tehran officially declared the US “a terrorist government and the US Central Command known as CENTCOM as well as all its affiliates a terrorist group,” a statement of the Islamic Republic’s Supreme National Security Council headed by President Hassan Rouhani said.

The statement blamed CENTCOM for harming Iran’s national security as well as ruining the lives of “innocent Iranian and non-Iranian individuals” to promote the US' “aggressive policies” in Western Asia. It also specifically mentioned that the US is “involved” in the killing of people in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition wages a brutal military campaign against the Shia Houthi rebels. Washington has long provided intelligence and logistic support to the Saudis, and also sold them weapons as part of arms deals worth billions of dollars.

The US and its allies “have always been advocates of extremist groups and terrorists in the Western Asian region,”the council said, adding that Washington has to take responsibility for “the dangerous consequences of its adventures.”

Earlier on Monday President Donald Trump announced the US' decision to designate Iran’s elite military unit, the Revolutionary Guards Corps, as a terrorist group. The Iranian Security Council condemned the move by calling it “an illegal and dangerous action” that poses a“major threat to the regional and international peace and security as well as grossly violates the rules of international law.”

Black hole picture captured for first time in space breakthrough

Network of eight radio telescopes around the world records revolutionary image

Science correspondent

Astronomers have captured the first image of a black hole, heralding a revolution in our understanding of the universe’s most enigmatic objects.

The picture shows a halo of dust and gas, tracing the outline of a colossal black hole, at the heart of the Messier 87 galaxy, 55m light years from Earth.

What are black holes?

The black hole itself – a cosmic trapdoor from which neither light nor matter can escape – is unseeable. But the latest observations take astronomers right to its threshold for the first time, illuminating the event horizon beyond which all known physical laws collapse.

The breakthrough image was captured by the Event Horizon telescope (EHT), a network of eight radio telescopes spanning locations from Antarctica to Spain and Chile, in an effort involving more than 200 scientists.

Sheperd Doeleman, EHT director and Harvard University senior research fellow said: “Black holes are the most mysterious objects in the universe. We have seen what we thought was unseeable. We have taken a picture of a black hole.”

Astronomers reveal first-ever picture of a black hole – video

France Córdova, director of the US National Science Foundation and an astrophysicist, said that the image, which she had only seen as it was unveiled at the press briefing she was chairing, had brought tears to her eyes. “We have been studying black holes for so long that sometimes it’s easy to forget that none of us has seen one,” she said. “This will leave an imprint on people’s memories.”

The image gives the first direct glimpse of a black hole’s accretion disc, a fuzzy doughnut-shaped ring of gas and dust that steadily “feeds” the monster within.

The EHT picks up radiation emitted by particles within the disc that are heated to billions of degrees as they swirl around the black hole at close to the speed of light, before vanishing down the plughole.

The halo’s crescent-like appearance in the image is because the particles in the side of the disc rotating towards Earth are flung towards us faster and so appear brighter. The dark shadow within marks the edge of the event horizon, the point of no return, beyond which no light or matter can travel fast enough to escape the inexorable gravitational pull of the black hole.

Black holes were first predicted by Einstein’s theory of relativity – although Einstein himself was sceptical that they actually existed. Since then, astronomers have accumulated overwhelming evidence that these cosmic sinkholes are out there, including recent detection of gravitational waves that ripple across the cosmos when pairs of them collide.

But black holes are so small, dark and distant that observing them directly requires a telescope with a resolution equivalent to being able to see a bagel on the moon. This was once thought to be an insurmountable challenge.

The EHT achieved the necessary firepower by combining data from eight of the world’s leading radio observatories, including the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (Alma) in Chile and the South Pole Telescope, creating an effective telescope the size of the Earth.

When observations were launched in 2017, the EHT had two primary targets. First was Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, which has a mass of about 4m suns. The second target, which yielded the image, was a supermassive black hole in the galaxy M87, into which the equivalent of 6bn suns of light and matter has disappeared.

The collaboration is still working on producing an image of the Milky Way’s black hole. “We hope to get that very soon,” said Doeleman.

The success of the project hinged on clear skies on several continents simultaneously and exquisite coordination between the eight far-flung teams. Observations at the different sites were coordinated using atomic clocks, called hydrogen masers, accurate to within one second every 100 million years. And, on one night in April 2017, everything came together. “We got super lucky, the weather was perfect,” said Ziri Younsi, a member of the EHT collaboration who is based at University College London.

The sheer volume of data generated was also unprecedented – in one night the EHT generated enough data to fill half a tonne of hard drives. This meant waiting for half a year for the South Pole data, which could only be shipped out at the end of Antarctic winter.

The observations are already giving scientists new insights into the weird environment close to black holes, where gravity is so fierce that reality as we know it is distorted beyond recognition.

At the event horizon, light is bent in a perfect loop around the black hole, meaning if you stood there you would be able to see the back of your own head. The observations also provide one of the most stringent tests to date of Einstein’s theory of general relativity: this predicts a rounded shape of the black hole’s halo, in line with what EHT has observed.

Scientists are also hoping to understand more about the origin of jets of radiation that are blasted out from the poles of some black holes at close to the speed of light, creating brilliant beacons that can be picked out across the cosmos.

However, the observations do not yet reveal anything about the black hole’s inscrutable interior.

“The black hole is not the event horizon, it’s something inside. It could be something just inside the event horizon, an exotic object hovering just beneath the surface, or it could be a singularity at the centre … or a ring,” said Younsi. “It doesn’t yet give us an explanation of what’s going on inside.”

Heino Falcke, chair of the EHT science council, who is based at Radboud University in the Netherlands, said: “The big question for me is whether we’ll ever be able to transcend that limit. The answer may be maybe not. That’s frustrating but we’ll have to accept it.”

New York declares measles emergency, blasts misinformation fueling outbreak

Jonathan Allen,
Gina Cherelus

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A measles outbreak in Brooklyn, primarily among Orthodox Jewish children, prompted New York City on Tuesday to declare a public health emergency, requiring unvaccinated people in the affected areas to get the vaccine or face fines

The city’s largest outbreak since 1991 of the once virtually eradicated disease has mainly been confined to the Orthodox Jewish community in the borough’s Williamsburg neighborhood, with 285 cases confirmed since October, Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference. That’s up sharply from only two reported cases in all of 2017.

“This is the epicenter of a measles outbreak that is very, very troubling and must be dealt with immediately,” de Blasio said. He was joined by city health officials who decried what they called “misinformation” spread by opponents of vaccines.

The measles virus is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications and death. While there have been no confirmed deaths so far, 21 people have been hospitalized, with five admitted to intensive care, officials said. All but 39 of the confirmed cases are in children.

The outbreak is part of a broader resurgence in the United States, with 465 cases reported in 19 states so far this year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The United States declared measles eliminated from the country in 2000 thanks to widespread vaccination, meaning it is no longer constantly present. But vaccination rates have declined in recent years, according to infectious disease experts.

The Brooklyn outbreak has been traced to an unvaccinated child who became infected on a visit to Israel, which is also grappling with an outbreak, according to New York City’s Department of Health.

Officials from the Department of Health will check vaccination records of anyone who has been in contact with infected patients in certain parts of Brooklyn, officials said.

They will impose fines of up to $1,000 on those who have not received the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine and cannot give other evidence of immunity, such as having previously had the measles.

It is the first time New York City has ordered mandatory vaccinations in recent history, according to health officials.

‘PHONY ARTICLES AND STUDIES’

Community leaders and doctors welcomed the move.

“We will make sure that everybody who is allowed will be vaccinated,” Rabbi David Niederman, the president of the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg, said in a phone interview.

“The schools are cooperating, everyone’s cooperating.”
He said he had seen misinformation circulate around the tightly knit community, but that most families trusted the Health Department.

“You get phony, phony articles and studies, so yes, some people will fall for that,” he said. “They will do anything and everything to improve the health of their children.”

Doctors in affected communities said an anonymously produced anti-vaccine booklet targeting Orthodox Jews that contained false information had appeared in the mail over the last couple years, which had sown doubts and hesitancy among some parents.

“In general, the Orthodox community does immunize,” said Dr. Joseph Kaplovitz, who works at the NYU Langone Stepping Stones Pediatrics clinic in Brooklyn’s Borough Park.

Dr. Jeffrey Dick of Kindercare Pediatrics in Williamsburg said his practice had seen at least a dozen measles cases in recent months, but also an uptick in families seeking vaccinations as worry about the outbreak spread.

The mandatory vaccination order follows one from the Health Department last week requiring yeshivas and day-care programs serving Williamsburg’s Orthodox Jewish community to exclude unvaccinated children or face fines or closure.

Another outbreak has hit Orthodox Jewish families in New York’s Rockland County. Officials there banned children not vaccinated against measles from public spaces last month.

That order was overturned by a state judge on Friday, local media reported. The order is being appealed by Rockland officials.

Federal officials are also tracking outbreaks in New Jersey, California, Michigan and Washington state.

A growing and vocal fringe of parents oppose vaccines believing, contrary to scientific evidence, that ingredients in the vaccines can cause autism or other disorders.

City officials also expressed alarm at reports of parents holding “measles parties,” where they intentionally expose their unvaccinated children to an infected child in the mistaken belief that doing so is a safe way to create immunity.

“I understand that parents may be afraid of getting their children vaccinated,” said Oxiris Barbot, the city’s health commissioner. “I know that getting vaccinated is far safer than getting measles.”
