U.S. WARPLANES CHASE OFF RUSSIAN JETS IN DANGEROUS SYRIA STANDOFF

BY

Two U.S. warplanes in Syria were forced to divert from supporting ground operations against the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) on Thursday to intercept Russian jets that crossed into U.S. coalition airspace.

The U.S. F-22 stealth fighters even fired warning flares at the Russian Su-25 close-air support jets. During the incident, one of the U.S. warplanes also was forced to perform a risky maneuver to avoid a mid-air collision with one of the Su-25s. The dangerous standoff reportedly lasted around 40 minutes and concluded after one of the F-22s shadowed one of the Russian planes.

The Russian jets "were promptly intercepted by two F-22A Raptors providing air cover for partner ground forces conducting operations to defeat ISIS," according to what Air Forces Central Command spokesman Lt. Col. Damien Pickart told CNN.

At one point, the U.S. F-22 stealth fighters fired warning flares at the Russian Su-25 close air support jets.GETTY IMAGES

"The F-22s conducted multiple maneuvers to persuade the Su-25s to depart our de-conflicted airspace, including the release of chaff and flares in close proximity to the Russian aircraft and placing multiple calls on the emergency channel to convey to the Russian pilots that they needed to depart the area," Pickart added.

In November, the U.S. and Russia agreed to a clear deconfliction line along the Euphrates River. The agreement stipulated Russia would not fly east of the river, while the U.S. agreed not to fly west. But the Russians have reportedly flown into U.S.-controlled airspace six to eight times per day, increasing the risk of incidents like the interception of the Su-25s on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Russia's Ministry of Defense denies its planes flew east of the Euphrates River and claimed the American media employed "wishful thinking" about the incident, though it's not immediately clear exactly what that meant.

Thursday's incident comes after a surprise visit to a Russian airbase in Syria from Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, during which he announced a partial withdrawal of Russian troops from the country. But he also said Russia would maintain a presence in Syria and promised airstrikes "if terrorists raise their head again," seemingly referring to the forces who attempted to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Putin sides with Kim Jong-un as he goads Trump’s ability to target North Korea

VLADIMIR Putin has declared an attack on North Korea by the United States would be “catastrophic”, warning Donald Trump his forces would not be able to find all of the targets needed for a pre-emptive strike.

The Russian leader said both President Trump and Kim Jong-un needed to “calm down” in order to resolve the worsening crisis on the Korean Peninsula.

Mr Putin said he hoped “common sense will prevail” as Mr Trump and despot Kim continue to trade personal insults and threats of nuclear war.

Speaking at an annual end-of-year news conference, the Russian premier blamed American policy for creating the current crisis.

He said a 2005 deal, brokered by the United States, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea andNorth Korea, set in to motion the denuclearisation of the Kim regime.

But he added: “A few months later this wasn't enough for the United States.

“Accounts started to be frozen... North Korea had to do things that went beyond the agreements.

“Why did the United States do this? Was it not enough?”

Mr Putin went on to accuse the US of "provoking" North Korea to withdraw from the deal.

And he citied American invovement in overthrowing Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Muammar Gaddafi in Libya as reasons for the hermit kingdom's distrust of the US.

He added: "North Korea does not see any other means of self-defence except the development of weapons of mass destruction and military equipment."

"We consider that both sides have to stop escalating the situation. We have to end this spiral."

But he heralded Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s recent calls for “direct contact” with the North Korean regime as a “very good signal”.

Rex Tillerson has expressed his desire to re-establish a dialogue with North Korea

Mr Trump has previously told his chief diplomat to “save his energy” and not attempt to negotiate with the nuclear-armed North.

He said in a tweet: “I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man…”

And the President has repeatedly refused to rule out a pre-emptive strike on the regime.

But experts have warned any attack, even if it was successful in killing Kim and destroying his nuclear arsenal, would still result in millions of deaths.

Diplomats met to discuss North Korea's nuclear programme at the 2005 six-party talks

The Russian leader also said Moscow refused to recognise Kim’s regime as a nuclear power.

The 2005 agreement Mr Putin referred to came from the ‘six-party talks’ in Beijing.

The November round of discussions concluded with an assurance by the US none of its nuclear weapons were deployed on the Korean Peninsula and that it had no intention of attacking the North.

In return, North Korea, then led by Kim Jong-un’s father Kim Jong-il, agreed to stop its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

However shortly after the deal was done, the United States froze bank accounts containing some £14million, which it says was linked to money laundering and counterfeiting by the rogue state.

North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes have greatly accelerated under the rule of Kim Jong-un.

The regime has tested two nuclear weapons since he replaced his father as supreme leader in May 2016.

Kim claimed his most recent test in September was a hugely destructive hydrogen bomb, though some experts despite this.

The North’s development of long-range missiles has also progressed significantly.

Just last month, the regime tested its latest Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile, which reportedly has the range to target anywhere in the United States as well as the UK.

BRIEFLY

Stuff that matters

SCORCHED EARTH

One-third of forests aren’t growing back after wildfires.

Forests in the American West are having a harder time recovering from wildfires because of (what else?) climate change, according to new research published in Ecology Letters.

Researchers measured the growth of seedlings in 1,500 wildfire-scorched areas in Colorado, Wyoming, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Across the board, they found “significant decreases” in tree regeneration, a benchmark for forest resilience. In one-third of the sites, researchers found zero seedlings.

The warmest, driest forests were hit especially hard.

“Seedlings are more sensitive to warm, dry conditions than mature trees, so if the right conditions don’t exist within a few years following a wildfire, tree seedlings may not establish,” said Philip Higuera, a coauthor of the study.

Earlier this month, a separate study found that ponderosa pine and pinyon forests in the West are becoming less resilient due to droughts and warmer temperatures. Researchers told the New York Times that as trees disappear, some forests could shift to entirely different ecosystems, like grasslands or shrublands.

You’d think the rapid reconfiguration of entire ecosystems would really light a fire under us to deal with climate change, wouldn’t you?

Anti-Homeless Robot Deployed in San Francisco

December 14, 2017 at 11:44 am

(ANTIMEDIA) — As the homeless problem continues to surge in San Francisco, an animal advocacy and pet adoption clinic has taken the novel, if dystopian, approach of hiring an autonomous security robot unit to clear out vagrants. The SPCA (the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) deployed a K5 robot manufactured by Knightscope, a Silicon Valley-based robotics company, to help discourage homeless people from erecting tents on the sidewalks and streets near the clinic. Though it has reduced the number of encampments, the robot has drawn overwhelmingly negative reactions from city residents.

Resembling a Whovian Dalek, the K5 security robot moves at around three miles per hour and is equipped with four cameras and an array of lasers, thermal sensors, and GPS. It can be rented for $6 an hour as opposed to the $16/hr a security guard costs.

Representatives for the SPCA say homeless encampments were making the area dangerous for staff members.

“Over the summer our shelter was broken into twice. The inside was vandalized and property and cash donations were stolen,” S.F. SPCA spokesperson Krista Maloney remarked. “Furthermore, many staff members and volunteers have filed complaints about damage to cars and harassment they experienced in our parking lot when leaving work after dark. We currently employ security guards, but we have a large campus and they can only be in one area at a time.”

Bill Santana Li, CEO of Knightscope, which has 19 clients in five U.S. states, also defended the use of the robot, calling it an effective crime deterrent.

“If I put a marked law enforcement vehicle in front of your home or your office, criminal behavior changes,” he said.

Despite its efficacy, many have criticized the move, calling it draconian and even dystopian.

In a tweet, journalist Benjamin Norton opined: “Capitalism: instead of providing homes for homeless people, spend exorbitant sums of money creating robots that will prevent homeless people from making homes for themselves.”

The tension over robots in San Francisco has been growing for several years now, and the city previously passed a bill banning food delivery robots. As of last week, city officials had passed a bill banning the use of security robots altogether. This may be for the best for the robot itself. Within one week of its deployment, the SPCA reported attacks on the robot, saying people had “put a tarp over it, knocked it over and put barbecue sauce on all the sensors.” One resident also reported seeing the K5 with feces smeared on it.

With robotics on the rise and more companies integrating them into their business models, this issue is unlikely to go away.

In San Francisco, in particular, the use of robots as a policing force against the homeless touched a nerve — and for good reason. In recent years, San Francisco has turned into a major tech hub, and with a new surge in population has come skyrocketing costs for rent that have priced out many residents. Despite the $275 million the city spent on homelessness and supportive housing this year — plus over an additional $100 million spent by the private sector — the disparity between the wealthy and the impoverished continues to grow, as does the number of people forced to live on the streets.

A historically socially conscious city flush with venture capital remains mired in poverty; beneath the glittering arcologies of new high-rises and corporate headquarters remains the squalor of millions who have been left behind and are hopeless. Perhaps a shiny robot menacing the destitute is the perfect metaphor for a city whose tech startups may have come at the cost of the city’s humanity.

BIRTH CONTROL PILL OFFICIALLY LINKED TO INCREASED RISK OF BREAST CANCER

December 12, 2017

Some predict that in coming years cancer rates will climb to 1 in 2 adults, and in the throes of such a serious cancer epidemic, all eyes are on causes and cures. Hormonal birth control has long been suspected of contributing to the risk of developing cancer, and this claim is further supported by a European study of cancer rates in women who use this hugely popular method of birth control.

Looking at a large swath of data collected on Danish women using hormonal birth control, researchers note a link to the development of breast cancer, coming to the following conclusions:

“For those who had been taking some form of hormonal contraceptive – whether orally, via an implant, patch, IUD, or vaginal ring – the risk of getting breast cancer was comparatively increased.

This risk depends on the amount of time they’d been taking the contraceptive. If it was less than a year, the increase was roughly 9 percent. For more than a decade, it was 38 percent.

Interestingly, for those on hormonal contraception for more than 5 years, a small but significant risk remained after discontinuing its use.” [Source]

Interestingly, in the same week this information was published, other news agencies reported on the fact that while hormonal birth control may be linked to breast cancer, it also is linked to a reduction in the development of other reproductive system cancers.

Oral contraceptives are highly effective in preventing unwanted pregnancy, but the information regarding cancer is quite confusing and fatalistic. A sort of cancer offset mindset.

For anyone looking for other valuable arguments in the case against hormonal birth control, Dr. Sara Gottfried, a practicing gynecologist gives 10 reasons why women should quit taking birth control pills. This list was developed based on her personal experience in treating hundreds of women annually.

  1. The Pill dramatically increase a woman’s testosterone levels which can cause a low sex drive, vaginal dryness, and painful intercourse. Up to 40% of women may be experiencing this problem but not talking about it.
  2. The reason the Pill is famous for helping to clear up acne is that it overwhelms natural estrogen with testosterone. While this may be a temporary benefit to taking the Pill, long-term, your natural “female” hormones don’t return to normal. This means your hormones stay whacked for decades. Dr. Kelly Brogan tells the same tale of disturbed hormonal balance in women who have been taking the pill, with no clear sign of the body returning to normal hormone levels. – Recommended to read.
  3. The gut is negatively affected by BCPs. Another thing that gets “whacked” when you take the pill is your gut health. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease (both linked to chronic gut inflammation) is more common among women who use oral contraceptives.
  4. The Pill decreases the bio-availability of key vitamins and minerals your body needs. Doctors still don’t know how, but BCPs lower the body’s absorption of vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, B9 (folate), B12, vitamins C and E, copper, magnesium, selenium, and zinc.
  5. The Pill causes blood clots. If certain types of oral birth control are used, the tendency to develop deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolus increases three-fold.
  6. The Pill makes PMS worse. Those containing , a synthetic version of progestin, are the worst.
  7. The Pill lowers your thyroid hormones. isn’t just from Fukushima radiation.
  8. The Pill can make you gain weight, retain fluid, and feel bloated. The mainstream will tell you that the Pill isn’t the reason for your weight gain, but just in case you think it is, don’t worry – it will in a month or two.
  9. The Pill increases the risk of breast cancer and cervical cancers. No brainer there.
  10. The Pill, as opposed to other contraceptive methods can cause permanent delayed conception. Maybe you don’t want kids now, but what about the future?
