Venezuela's Maduro: 'Mr. Donald Trump, here is my hand'

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro said he wants a meeting with President Donald Trump, the same man he ridicules as a crass imperial magnate, as the U.S. weighs slapping crippling economic sanctions on his socialist administration.

In a lengthy address Thursday to members of a new, all-powerful constitutional assembly, Maduro instructed Venezuela's foreign minister to approach the United States about arranging a telephone conversation or meeting with Trump at next month's United Nations General Assembly.

"Mr. Donald Trump, here is my hand," the socialist president said, adding that he wants as strong a relationship with the U.S. as he has with Russia.

The remarks came a day after the Trump administration slapped sanctions on eight close allies, accusing them of violating human rights and democratic norms, and debated whether to pile on with additional economic sanctions to further isolate the government.

On Thursday, Trump said he discussed Venezuela along with North Korea and Afghanistan in a security briefing with top national security aides and Vice President Mike Pence, who travels to neighboring Colombia on Sunday in a trip where discussions on how to pressure Maduro is expected to feature prominently.

"We had some very good meetings, some very good ideas, very good thoughts, and a lot of decisions were made," Trump said following the briefing, without providing any details.

Maduro's apparent olive branch was undermined in the same speech by his own angry rant against Trump, who he accused of backing a failed attack on a military base a week ago.

The Trump administration in turn has called Maduro a "dictator" and issued sanctions against him and more than two dozen other former and current officials.

Even as the U.S. for now holds back applying economic sanctions, the Maduro government is finding itself increasingly isolated from financial markets.

On Thursday, Credit Suisse bank said it banned trading in Venezuelan bonds over what it said were "recent development and the political climate" in the country, according to an internal memo. Any future transactions involving Venezuelan officials or assets will have to go through additional screening, according to the memo whose authenticity was confirmed by the bank.

Venezuela is in the midst of a severe economic downturn caused by low oil prices and government policies that have scared away private investment. The country's bonds are one of the few ways the current government is able to raise money to support its collapsing economy.

But as the country's political crisis has worsened, the bonds issued by the government as well as the state-owned oil company PDVSA have become a point of contention and concern for investors who increasingly worry they are supporting an oppressive regime as well as a country that is a great risk of defaulting on its debts. Goldman Sachs came under political pressure earlier this year for buying a reported $2.8 billion in Venezuelan bonds on the open market at a significant discount.

China Announces It Will “Prevent Them From Doing So” If U.S. Attacks North Korea

If America and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow Kim Jong Un and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, the Chinese regime “will prevent them from doing so.”

If America and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow Kim Jong Un and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, the Chinese regime “will prevent them from doing so.”

According to the Chinese state-owned paper Global Times, the communist regime of China will militarily intervene if the U.S. decides to attack North Korea, which clearly represents another concerning news of a situation that is getting tenser every day.

An editorial of this media outlet warned that China would stay neutral in case Pyongyang launches missiles that threaten American soil first and the Trump administration retaliates. However, it makes perfectly clear that if America and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow Kim Jong Un and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, the Chinese regime “will prevent them from doing so.”

Naturally, this stance represents a diplomatic blow, considering that while it makes it perfectly clear that it would support North Korea in an hypothetic war, the part of being “neutral” if Pyongyang attack first it is quite ambiguous.

Trump Jinping

In the most revealing part of its editorial, the Global Times assured that the Chinese regime will resist any side which wants to change the status quo of the locations where China´s interests are concerned.

China has been the most important ally of North Korea during the last few decades, and it doesn’t represent a surprise that they are guaranteeing full support. In fact, many could even believe that this neutrality is an implicit message that calls for North Korea to stop its action, since it won’t defend them if they attack first and the U.S. responds.

However, the problem is that the lack of clarity along with the threatening stance if the U.S. attack first, makes many experts believe that China is definitely on North Korea’s side on this serious matter. Naturally, being “neutral” in this situation can be interpreted in many ways.

In fact, this seems to be the most possible scenario considering that this communist regime hasn’t done anything to stop Kim Jong Un’s suicidal steps, despite the fact that President Donald Trump has asked them in many opportunities.

North Korea and China are both trying to stop South Korea and the U.S. from implementing THAAD.

North Korea and China are both trying to stop South Korea and the U.S. from implementing THAAD.

The warning of China comes amid the escalating tensions between Kim Jong Un’s regime and Trump administration. North Korea has warned it plans to launch a nuclear strike on Guam after Trump announced that any other threat against America would be met with “fire and fury.”

Recently, Defense Secretary James Mattis issued his own warning among the increasingly aggressive rhetoric, telling North Korea´s leader that he risks destroying his regime and even his own people if he decides to attack.

According to White House aide Sebastian Gorka, the magnitude of the nuclear crisis can easily be compared to the Cuban Missile Crisis, where the world was about to enter into an unprecedented war with unpredictable results.

While China has expressed its “frustration” with Pyongyang repeated nuclear and missile tests, it has showed a much stronger stance with the behavior from South Korea and the United States, to the point where they believe both countries are responsible for the escalating tensions.

While China has expressed its “frustration” with Pyongyang repeated nuclear and missile tests, it has showed a much stronger stance with the behavior from South Korea and the United States, to the point where they believe both countries are responsible for the escalating tensions.

During this whole situation, China’s stance has been extremely passive to Kim Jong Un’s regime, given the fact that while it has reiterated calls for calm during the crisis, these actions have been characterized by its concerning weakness.

In fact, while China has expressed its “frustration” with Pyongyang’s repeated nuclear and missile tests, it has shown a much stronger stance with the behavior from South Korea and the United States, to the point where they believe these countries are responsible for the escalating tensions.

Believe it or not, the widely read state-run Global Times, which is published by the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily, recently wrote in an editorial that China was not able to persuade either Pyongyang or Washington to back down.

Of course, we’re talking about diplomatic moves that only represents an implicit threat to the U.S. interests, considering that it makes the false equivalence to compare North Korea’s actions with America’s, and Kim Jong Un has continued with his threatening moves without any backlash.

Recently, China’s Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang urged America and North Korea to be “cautious” with their rhetoric and actions. Naturally, this doesn’t seem quite “cautious” for a government that has announced its intentions to fight against the U.S. if the decision to justifiably attack Pyongyang is finally taken.

In the most revealing part of its editorial, the Global Times assured that the Chinese regime will resist any side which wants to change the status quo of the locations where China´s interests are concerned.

And as it was previously noted, North Korea has been one of China’s main allies, not only because of the ideological similarities or the fact that it represents a block to stop South Korea and the U.S. expansion in the region. The main reason why Kim Jong Un’s regime represent a great interest for China is because of its nuclear capability.

Whit that in mind, America should not expect a possible mediation from the Chinese regime in this delicate situation.

The US has heavy naval power in the Pacific if things break loose with North Korea

As tensions reach a fever pitch between the US and North Korea, with Pyongyang announcing its intentions to fire missiles towards the US territory of Guam, the US Navy has continued to patrol and span the entire Pacific ocean with power and reach unparalleled on earth.

Near Japan, within a short steam of Guam and the Korean Peninsula, sits the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier strike and the guided-missile destroyers and cruisers in its strike group.

The Reagan's strike group is the only forward-based aircraft carrier in the US's arsenal and trains specifically for Asia-Pacific-specific missions. One of the destroyers in the group recently conducted freedom of navigation operation against excessive Chinese maritime claims in the South China Sea.

Further south, in the Singapore Strait, the USS America, one of a new class of small deck aircraft carriers packed with V-22 Ospreys, and Harrier jump jets, and Marines ready with landing crafts to take any beach, is making its way to the Middle East, according to the US Naval Institute.

Near Eastern Australia, the the Naval Institute notes that the USS Bonhomme Richard amphibious readiness group (like a carrier strike group but for the smaller carriers) has the same aircraft setup but increased well decks and landing craft to launch Marines to take any beach in the world.

Each of these carrier groups sails with guided-missile destroyers that pack some of the world's best missile defenses. In the event that North Korea follows through with a plan to fire missiles near Guam, any one of these groups of ships has a good shot at knocking these missiles down.

But even with its scattered assets across the Pacific, the US is not on war footing towards North Korea. This simply represents a day in the life of the US Navy's massive fleet.

Should President Donald Trump give the word, dozens more ships, hundreds more aircraft, and innumerable guided missiles and deck guns could crowd the Korean Peninsula flanked by the US's powerful Asian allies.
