Question

US 'Spring Storm', Ukraine Weapons Depot Explosion, Russia Snap Military Exercises Crimea: Connection?

Has anyone noticed how the mainstream media tends to dispense 'news' stories to the public as if they were isolated incidents unconnected to anything else? Silly question, I know. After all, you're probably reading SOTT.net for that very reason (among others). There were a few significant events over the past week concerning Crimea and the ongoing geopolitical 'war' between the USA and Russia that fit this pattern of media obtuseness to a 'tee', with no context or dot connecting whatsoever, despite the fact that the connections were just screaming to be made.

First, the American landing ship, the USS Carter Hall, with marines on board, crossed the Bosporus Strait and arrived in the Black Sea last Friday for "joint drills with the Romanian Navy." As can be seen from video released of the exercises, these were on a large scale and involved other landing craft like hovercraft, not to mention air support from military jets.
The exercises lasted for 3 days from March 18th to 21st and took place near the Romanian port of Constanta, the ostensible reason for them being to participate in bilateral training exercise Spring Storm 17 with Romania. Of course, the USA has no intention or reason to invade Romania, and does not believe that they would ever have to do so in the face of, for example, a fabled Russian invasion of the country.

The true reason for such exercises is instead a simulated US/NATO invasion of Crimea that lies just a few hundred kilometers to the East. While the mainstream media would have us believe that the intention of such a move would be to 'take back' Crimea for Ukraine, the US' interest in Crimea has nothing to do with justice or international law but rather with denying Russia its Black Sea fleet port in Sevastopol and therefore Russian naval access to the Mediterranean. This was the primary reason for the US-backed coup in Ukraine in 2013, and the reason that Russia's immediate response to the coup was to reincorporate Crimea into Russia.

So it was no surprise that Russia's response to 'Spring Storm' was to launch 'snap' and 'unprecedented' drills on March 20th in Crimea, a clear acknowledgement of the real message conveyed by the US exercise.
"A large scale airborne military drill kicked off at Crimea's Opuk Training Ground on Tuesday, with more than 2,500 soldiers of the Russian Airborne Forces and 600 pieces of equipment participating in the exercise. Some 350 paratroopers from the Novorossiysk air assault division landed on the Crimean coast as part of the Airborne Force's large-scale drills on the peninsula's Opuk Training Ground on Tuesday. The paratroopers as well as nine BMD-2KU airborne infantry fighting vehicles parachuted from nine Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft".
"For the first time in the Russian army's history the Airborne Forces' three large units were simultaneously alerted as part of the drills and partly redeployed to Crimea with weapons and equipment," said Serdyukov, who was in charge of the manoeuvres.

With typical hypocrisy, NATO (aka the USA) expressed their dismay at the Russian exercises, with NATO official spokesperson Oana Lungescu telling the Kommersant newspaper that "any Russian military exercises in occupied Crimea are illegal under international law as they do not have the consent of the Ukrainian government", which is to say, do not have the consent of the USA.

The Ukrainian junta in Kiev was, of course, equally indignant: "We are keeping an eye on these exercises and the relevant departments authorized to carry out this kind of activity. We are doing this because the exercises are taking place on territory temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation and a large number of personnel of the Airborne Troops of the Russian Armed Forces are involved in it," Vladislav Seleznyov, an officer at the public relations directorate of the Ukrainian General Staff, told theKrym.Realii website. He added that Ukraine was ready to retaliate in the event of any aggression anywhere on the Russian-Ukrainian border.

This last remark is interesting in light of what happened just one day after the Russian exercises in Crimea ended.

The explosion occurred at a base in Balakliya, near Kharkiv, about 100km (60 miles) from both the Russian border and the ongoing fighting between East Ukrainian separatists and soldiers of the Kiev junta. The depot stockpiled weapons including rockets and missiles that were being used against the citizens of the Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics. It is possible, therefore, that this was a case of sabotage by soldiers of these republics, and while that would represent a brilliant military (you could even say humanitarian) move on their part, it also reveals the complete ineptitude of the Ukrainian military command and government as it exists under the pusillanimous Kiev junta, installed and controlled by Washington.

Alternatively, given the increasingly decrepit state of Ukrainian society, where millions of people are in dire financial straits as a result of the staggering levels of political corruption and the feckless 'anti-terror operation' in East Ukraine, it's plausible that some disgruntled members within the Ukrainian military decided to make their feelings known in explosive fashion. Whatever the case, the Ukrainian government has, as expected, blamed Russia for the incident, hysterically hypothesizing that a drone was used to drop a bomb of some description on the depot.

The third Ukraine-centered event that occurred this past week was the murder, in broad daylight in Kiev, of former Russian lawmaker Denis Voronenkov on March 23rd. Voronenkov was a Russian politician and member of the Russian State Duma from 2011-2016. After stepping down as a member of the parliament in 2016, Voronenkov left Russia and settled in Ukraine. From the available information, Voronenkov appears to have been a disreputable character. While still a Russian MP, he had voted for the repatriation of Crimea to Russia and voiced his support for the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk.

In 2016 when he lost his bid for reelection to the State Duma, he was accused of being involved in an illegal property seizure (worth 127 million rubles) in Moscow. As Russian investigators were preparing a corruption case against him and waiting for his parliamentary immunity to run out in December 2016, Voronenkov fled to Ukraine, received Ukrainian citizenship and immediately became a vocal critic of all things Russian. Last month he compared Russia under Vladimir Putin to Nazi Germany (how original!), condemned the repatriation of Crimea to Russia and denounced the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk. Now there's a man with principles!

At the time of his death, Voronenkov had been due to testify against former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych. Voronenkov's assassin (who was killed by a bodyguard) carried a Ukrainian passport and had been sought by the police on fraud and money laundering charges according to the General Prosecutor of Ukraine. He was also an active member of the National Guard of Ukraine. Given the internecine nature of post-coup Ukrainian politics and the massive business and political corruption that defines it, it is highly likely that, as concluded by the Kiev police, the murder was a contract killing over a business dispute.

But just as they blamed the Balakliya explosion on Russia, Kiev immediately blamed Voronenkov's assassination on Russia, concocting an elaborate tale alleging that his assassin was actually a Russian spy whose mission was to infiltrate the National Guard and who was trained in a special Russian school for saboteurs created by the Stalin-era NKVD (disbanded in 1946). Heck, Russia even encouraged him to get involved in a financial scandal in Ukraine as a 'cover', no doubt! It's as if they're trying to sound ridiculous. Then again, people who live within their own reality bubble tend to sound like raving lunatics a lot.

So there you have it, nothing to see here according to the Western media that serves as little more than a mouthpiece for Western imperialism in its primary goal of making sure that Russia is demonized at every turn and the world public kept ignorant of the truth Behind the Headlines.

Let there be light: German scientists test 'artificial sun'

By FRANK JORDANS, ASSOCIATED PRESS
BERLIN — Mar 23, 2017, 1:36 PM ET

WATCHOur Journey to Space

Scientists in Germany flipped the switch Thursday on what's being described as "the world's largest artificial sun," a device they hope will help shed light on new ways of making climate-friendly fuels.

The giant honeycomb-like setup of 149 spotlights — officially known as "Synlight" — in Juelich, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Cologne, uses xenon short-arc lamps normally found in cinemas to simulate natural sunlight that's often in short supply in Germany at this time of year.

By focusing the entire array on a single 20-by-20 centimeter (8x8 inch) spot, scientists from the German Aerospace Center, or DLR , will be able to produce the equivalent of 10,000 times the amount of solar radiation that would normally shine on the same surface.

Creating such furnace-like conditions — with temperatures of up to 3,000 degrees Celsius (5,432 Fahrenheit) — is key to testing novel ways of making hydrogen, according to Bernhard Hoffschmidt, the director of DLR's Institute for Solar Research.

Many consider hydrogen to be the fuel of the future because it produces no carbon emissions when burned, meaning it doesn't add to global warming. But while hydrogen is the most common element in the universe it is rare on Earth. One way to manufacture it is to split water into its two components — the other being oxygen — using electricity in a process called electrolysis.

Researchers hope to bypass the electricity stage by tapping into the enormous amount of energy that reaches Earth in the form of light from the sun.

Hoffschmidt said the dazzling display is designed to take experiments done in smaller labs to the next level, adding that once researchers have mastered hydrogen-making techniques with Synlight's 350-kilowatt array, the process could be scaled up ten-fold on the way to reaching a level fit for industry. Experts say this could take about a decade, if there is sufficient industry support.

The goal is to eventually use actual sunlight rather than the artificial light produced at the Juelich experiment, which cost 3.5 million euros ($3.8 million) to build and requires as much electricity in four hours as a four-person household would use in a year.

Hoffschmidt conceded that hydrogen isn't without its problems — for one thing it's incredibly volatile — but by combining it with carbon monoxide produced from renewable sources, scientists would, for example, be able to make eco-friendly kerosene for the aviation industry.

FBI searches for teen feared to have been abducted, gang-raped and fed to alligators

A prisoner testified last year that Brittannee Drexel, 17, was horrifically murdered in South Carolina.

The FBI have searched a remote rural location hoping to find clues about the disappearance of a 17-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted, gang-raped, shot and then fed to alligators.

The bureau was searching a rural area of South Carolina on Friday (24 March) in connection to the disappearance of Brittannee Drexel, which occurred almost eight years ago.

Last summer Taquan Brown, who is serving 25 years for an unrelated manslaughter case, testified that Drexel was abducted, gang-raped and then shot dead when she tried to escape in 2009.

Drexel, from Rochester, New York, disappeared while on spring break in Myrtle Beach.

No arrests being made in connection with the girl'sdisappearance.

WDPE, a local radio station, confirmed FBI Supervisory Agent Don Wood told them there was digging on a "private piece of property" near a dirt road.

An FBI spokesman in South Carolina told Fox Carolina that agents were involved in "investigative activity" in Georgetown County.

Drexel was last seen in CCTV footage captured 25 April 2009 leaving the Blue Water Hotel in Myrtle Beach. She did not have the permission of her parents to stay at the hotel.

Brown says Drexel was held in a drug stash house against her will by captors who raped her repeatedly.

Brown added that he saw Drexel being pistol-whipped before claiming he heard two gun shots from inside the house where she was held, before her body was wrapped up and taken away.

Attorney Brad Conway told WHEC News that Dawn Drexel was contacted by law enforcement and advised they were investigative warrants being served.

The FBI says Taquan Brown's story has been corroborated by other witnesses Charleston County Sheriffs Office

An attorney for Dawn Drexel, Brittannee's mother, said his client was notified that a search was taking place for the remains of her daughter.

"Other than that, we've been given no other information and we're on standby, as is everybody else right now, to find out what, if anything, they found that would be of value to Brittanee Drexel's murder case," Conway said.

In August 2016, the FBI announced that it is believed
Drexel was killed after travelling to the McClellanville area of South Carolina almost 60 miles away.

In June, investigators said they believed Drexel was dead, and offered a $25,000 (£20,000) reward for information leading to an arrest connected to her disappearance

A transcript obtained by the Post and Courier of Charleston stated that Special Agent Gerrick Munoz testified that Brown said that he had visited a property where she was raped by several men.

The FBI agent testified that she was taken to the stash house where one suspect "showed her off, introduced her to some other friends that were ther… they ended up tricking her out with some of their friends, offering her to them and getting a human trafficking situation".

NATO troops head for Poland ‘to deter Russian offensive actions’ (VIDEO)

Published time: 25 Mar, 2017 21:04

At least 1,350 American, British and Romanian soldiers have been sent to Poland from a base in Germany. US commanders said that the troops were ready “to deter Russian aggressive actions.”

The US, British and Romanian soldiers left the Rose Barracks military base in Vilseck, western Germany, for Poland where they are expected take part in NATO’s mission. The troops are “fully prepared to deter Russian offensive actions," US Colonel Patrick Ellis said at the departure ceremony on Saturday.

“As a result of Russia’s aggressive actions and in light of the changing and evolving security environment, at the Warsaw summit in July 2016 NATO members agreed to strengthen our deterrence and defensive posture,” US Major General Timothy P. McGuire said.

The NATO group is to be stationed in the town of Orzysz, 220 kilometers northeast of the capital, Warsaw, according to Reuters.

NATO troops in Estonia

Also on Saturday, NATO’s heavy armored vehicles of the French armed forces were delivered to Estonia, according to a video published by the General Staff of the Estonian Defense Forces.

France’s heavy armored vehicles include Leclerc tanks and VBCI infantry fighting vehicles, as well as dozens of VAB armored vehicles, a spokesman of the 1st Infantry Brigade said, according to the Kuulutaja newspaper.

The UK is to deliver Challenger 2, Titan and Trojan tanks to Estonia as well as self-propelled artillery mounts AS90, Warrior infantry fighting vehicles and reconnaissance drones, he added.

The battalion will be stationed in the military town of Tapa and will interact with the first infantry brigade of the Estonian Defense Forces.

The alignment of forces in Estonia is planned to finish in early April. By that time, Estonia is to host 800 soldiers from the UK and around 300 soldiers from France. The French group is to spend some eight months in the Baltic country. After that, Danish soldiers are expected to replace them.

NATO leaders agreed to deploy four multinational battalions to Poland as well as Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia on July 8 at the summit in Warsaw.

Russia has repeatedly criticized NATO’s military buildup along its borders, seen as a threat to national security.

In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed NATO for provoking a conflict with Moscow and using its“newly-declared official mission to deter Russia” as a pretext.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference in February, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that“NATO's expansion has led to an unprecedented level of tension over the last 30 years in Europe.”

Moscow has condemned the new US ground-based missile defense system in Eastern Europe and increased presence of NATO vessels in the Black Sea.
