RE: ARE WE NOW IN THE END TIMES?

10 times 'experts' predicted the world would end by now

Democrats claim world will end in 12 years, scientists disagree

Scientist agree the world will get warmer but there's no cliff edge; Power the Future executive director Daniel Turner weighs in.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while selling her "Green New Deal," said that the world will end in 12 years if nothing is done to address climate change.

"Millennials and people, you know, Gen Z... we’re like: ‘The world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change,'" Ocasio-Cortez said in January.

But similar past predictions – even by the most prestigious experts – have failed to pan out. Here are 10 of the biggest doomsday prediction failures:

1.– GLOBAL WARMING TO WIPE NATIONS "OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH" IF CLIMATE CHANGE NOT ADDRESSED BY YEAR 2000

In 1989, the Associated Press relayed a warning from a U.N. official:

"A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000."

The official was Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, who added: "Shifting climate patterns would bring back 1930s Dust Bowl conditions to Canadian and U.S. wheatlands.”

Instead, U.S. and global farm production rose, and more than 1 billion people worldwide rose out of extreme poverty due to economic growth.

CHERNOBYL ‘MAY STILL BE KILLING US’ AS BOOK WARNS DISASTER MIGHT BE BEHIND ‘GLOBAL RISE IN CANCER AND DISEASE’

No nations were “wiped off the face of the Earth” as of 2019.

However, those worried about warming caution that the U.N. official’s prediction was nuanced.

“He is not saying that entire nations are going to be wiped off the face of the earth by the year 2000,” Joe Romm, a senior fellow at American Progress, told Fox News.

“He is saying that if we don’t dramatically reverse emissions by the year 2000 — then we are not going to be able to avoid future flooding,” Romm said.

“It now seems inevitable that a number of island nations will be wiped off the face of the earth because we didn’t act in time,” he added.

According to NASA, global sea levels rose 3.5 inches in the 25 years since 1993, when it began reporting satellite data on sea levels.

The world’s lowest-lying country is the Maldives, a collection of Pacific islands with a population of just over 400,000, where the highest point in the country is 7.9 feet above sea level, with much of it below 3 feet.

2.– MASS STARVATION BY 1975

In 1967, a best-selling book came out called “Famine 1975! America’s Decision: Who Will Survive?

It predicted mass starvation around the developing world due to increasing population. “Today’s crisis can move in only one direction – toward catastrophe,” it warned.

Some experts praised the book and ridiculed doubters.

TROPICAL TECTONIC COLLISIONS MAY HAVE UNLEASHED ANCIENT ICE AGES

“All serious students of the plight of the underdeveloped nations agree that famine... is inevitable,” Cal Tech biology professor Peter Bonner wrote in a 1967 review of the book in the prestigious journal Science.

The exact opposite of the book’s prediction happened. Famine deaths plunged dramatically as farming technology improved, communist countries began allowing private property again, and the globe became further connected.

According to a dataset put together by Our World in Data, more people died of famine in the single decade prior to the book’s release than in all 52 years since it was published.

Yet the book got widespread praise from experts. Ecologist Paul Ehrlich, now President of the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford University, said in 1968 that the book “may be remembered as one of the most important books of our age.”

3.– GLOBAL FREEZING AS DANGEROUS AS NUCLEAR WAR

Global cooling was once a worry to many, such as University of California at Davis professor Kenneth Watt, who warned that present trends would make the world “eleven degrees colder in the year 2000 ... about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”

British science writer Nigel Calder was just as worried. "The threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind,” Calder warned in International Wildlife magazine in 1975.

ICE SAMPLES REVEAL A MASSIVE SUN STORM HIT EARTH IN ANCIENT TIMES ... AND IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN

That quote was dug up by George Mason University economist Walter E. Williams, who argues that there are so many apocalyptic predictions because “they have an agenda for more government control ... fear about the environment is a way to gain government control,” Williams told Fox News.

“Communism and socialism have lost respectability, so it’s been repackaged as environmentalism,” he added.

“It’s like watermelons — green on the outside, red on the inside.”

4.– MASSIVE WARMING BY THE YEAR 2000

The same U.N. official who predicted the loss of entire nations by the year 2000 also claimed: "the most conservative scientific estimate [is] that the Earth’s temperature will rise 1 to 7 degrees in the next 30 years.”

But looking back from 2019, the temperature rose about half of a degree Celsius since 1989, according to NASA.

HAUNTING PHOTOS SHOW DOZENS OF GAS MASKS LITTERING CHERNOBYL AS NATURE RECLAIMS NUCLEAR PLANT BLAST SITE

Romm says that, regardless of what that U.N. official may have said, the projections issued in the U.N.’s official reports have been good.

“All of the major scientific assessments of global warming have become more dire over time because greenhouse gas emissions have until very recently kept rising at a worst-case scenario rate,” Romm said.

Many who worry about global warming acknowledge that some past predictions have been overblown, but say they hope that doesn’t distract people from the reality that the earth is warming due to man – if more slowly and less catastrophically than some have predicted.

“There have been predictions that have turned out not to come true,” John P. Abraham, a Professor at the University of St. Thomas who has published papers on climate change, told Fox News. “But ... the majority of climate science was proven right.”

6.– AL GORE SAYS 10 YEARS ARE LEFT IN 2006

In 2006, while promoting his movie “An Inconvenient Truth”, Al Gore said that humanity had only 10 years left before the world would reach a point of no return.

Gore’s movie also featured animations of water inundating Manhattan and Florida.

EVE OF DESTRUCTION: DOOMSDAY CLOCK HOVERS AT 2 MINUTES TO 'MIDNIGHT'

Yet Gore’s critics point out that just a few years later, he bought an $8 million beach-front property near Los Angeles.

“I wish the climate catastrophists practiced what they preached and sold me their beachfront property at a steep discount,” Alex Epstein, author of “The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels” told Fox News.

7.– ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHE WILL CAUSE “NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST” BY THE YEAR 2000

In 1982, U.N. official Mostafa Tolba, executive director of the UN Environment Program, warned:

“By the turn of the century, an environmental catastrophe will witness devastation as complete, as irreversible, as any nuclear holocaust.”

ASTEROID THAT KILLED THE DINOSAURS CAUSED A MILE-HIGH TSUNAMI AROUND THE EARTH

No such disaster occurred.

8.– MASS EXTINCTION BY 1995

In 1970, Sen. Gaylord Nelson, D-Wisc., – often considered the “father of Earth Day” – cited the secretary of the Smithsonian, who “believes that in 25 years, somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.”

That did not happen.

ANCIENT ANTARCTIC ICE SHEET COLLAPSE COULD CAUSE A GLOBAL FLOOD

A 2011 notice from the National Science Foundation quotes researcher Anthony Barnosky at UC Berkeley, who said: "So far, only 1 to 2 percent of all species have gone extinct in the groups we can look at clearly, so by those numbers it looks like we are not far down the road to extinction.”

Barnosky still expressed concern over a long time horizon, saying that 75 percent of species could go extinct “in as little as 3 to 22 centuries.”

9.– METALS DEPLETED BY 1990

Scientist Harrison Brown predicted in Scientific American that lead, zinc, tin, gold and silver deposits would be fully depleted before 1990.

MASS EXTINCTION, 'GREAT DYING' COULD HAPPEN AGAIN, SCIENTISTS WARN

But mining companies found new technologies and reserves, such that by 2019, none of those minerals were near depletion.

10.– THE REAL REASON?

Economist Walter E. Williams says environmentalists have occasionally tipped their hand about what motivates their predictions.

"We have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have,” Stephen Schneider, a professor of Biology at Stanford University, said to Discover magazine in 1989. “Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest.”

END OF DAYS? TELESCOPE IMAGES REVEAL WHAT HAPPENS WHEN GALAXIES COLLIDE

Williams also cites Sen. Timothy Wirth, a Democrat from Colorado, who said in 1988: "We've got to ... try to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong ... we will be doing the right thing anyway in terms of economic policy and environmental policy."

Williams finds the exaggerated predictions of some environmentalists unacceptable.

“Lying is never OK. To mislead people is never OK,” he told Fox News.

“You can mislead kids and tell them there is Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. But don’t treat adults as children.”

Russia THREAT: Putin amassing missile arsenal in warning to Trump and NATO – shock claim

RUSSIA is stockpiling a deadly arsenal of missiles that poses one of the biggest global threats to the US and NATO, Swedish military chiefs

Vladimir Putin’s regime is modernising its weapons and beefing up its military strength as it challenges Donald Trump, the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST) annual report said. New warships and fighter jets are replacing older aircraft and naval vessels as Moscow ramps up military manoeuvres despite US and NATO objections.

According to MUST chief Gunnar Karlson, Russian weapons “have not become more, but they have become better” as Moscow bolsters its military presence in the Baltic Sea.

The MUST report said: ”There are few signs today that the parties are ready to approach each other to handle existing security challenges.”

Russia’s high-explosive Iskander missile, which can carry nuclear warheads, is causing greatest panic with Swedish military top brass.

The bunker-busting warheads can fire a fuel-air explosive blast missile or a cluster munitions warhead and have been deployed in Russian’s most western region, Kaliningrad, bordering Poland.

But the intelligence dossier warned Sweden should not focus solely on the threat from the hypersonic Iskander missiles, which have a range of up to 310 miles and travel at 2,000 m/s.

The MUST report said: ”I believe it has become a little difficult to understand Sweden's fixation on just one thing, namely Iskander robots in Kaliningrad.”

In the report, China is also identified as a threat to Sweden.

Beijing is rolling out its Polar Silk Road policy by developing Arctic shipping routes opened up by global warming.

China may build military bases in the area as part of the plan.

The initiative extends President Xi Jinping’s controversial Belt and Road Initiative.

The Communist regime’s plan to build global infrastructure is designed to increase Chinese influence around the world.

Mr Karlson said: ”Across the world, we see China's will to acquire bases, with Somalia and Sri Lanka as the most well-known examples.

“The question whether China would like to have bases in our part of the world will be relevant sooner or later, if it already isn’t.”

The strategic highlands have been under the Israeli occupation since 1967, but Trump's abrupt declaration a day after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Israel brings the dispute to a boiling point.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday Trump's statement has brought the region to the edge of a new crisis.

In a speech at a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, Erdogan said: "We cannot allow the legitimization of the occupation of the Golan Heights."

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed shock at Trump's plan.

With OIC ministers in Turkey; all condemn barbaric Christchurch terror against Muslims & seek to unite against dangerous tide of racism & Islamophobia in the West. All shocked by @realDonaldTrump continuing to try to give what is not his to racist Israel:first Al-Quds & now Golan

"All shocked by @realDonaldTrump continuing to try to give what is not his to racist Israel: first Al-Quds & now Golan" Zarif tweeted from Istanbul where he was attending the emergency OIC meeting.

"This illegal and unacceptable recognition does not change the fact that it belongs to Syria," Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said in Tehran.

“The Zionist regime, as an occupying regime, has no sovereignty over any Islamic and Arab lands and its occupation (of the Golan) and acts of violation should be swiftly brought to an end,” he said.

Qassemi said the only solution to the Golan dispute is to end the Israeli occupation. He said Trump's "personal and rash decisions reveal yet another reality of US policies that are dangerous to the entire world, and will particularly push this volatile region to successive crises.”

The Islamic Republic, he said, "will closely monitor all future developments in the region and continue its cooperation and consultations with the Syrian government and other countries to take appropriate measures."

Syria, which declared last month that it was ready to go to another war with Israel for the Golan, condemned Trump's pledge in a statement issued by its foreign ministry on Friday.

"The American position towards Syria's occupied Golan Heights clearly reflects the United States' contempt for international legitimacy and its flagrant violation of international law," it said.

“The irresponsible remarks by Trump, the US president, one more time demonstrated the US’ blind and relentless support for the Israeli occupying regime and its hostile acts,” it added.

Trump's announcement came ahead of a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United States next week.

In a tweet that caught many by surprise, Trump said the time had come for the United States to take the step, which Netanyahu warmly welcomed as a “miracle” on the Jewish holiday of Purim.

"After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!" Trump tweeted.

The US would be the first country to recognize the annexation, which the rest of the international community regards as Syria territory occupied by Israel.

The Syrian statement on Friday said Washington’s stance is a threat to global peace and security.

"The statements of the US president and his administration on the occupied Syrian Golan will never change the fact that the Golan was and will remain Arab and Syrian," it said.

"The Syrian nation is more determined to liberate this precious piece of Syrian national land through all available means," it added.

Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the 22-member organization "fully supports Syria's right for its occupied territory."

The Golan Heights are “occupied territory” belonging to Syria under international law and the resolutions of the United Nations and the UN Security Council, he stressed.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also condemned the US president's declaration, stressing that Ankara supports Syria’s territorial integrity.

"Attempts by the US to legitimize Israel's actions against international law will only lead to more violence and pain in the region," he wrote in a tweet late Thursday.

A member of the Russian Federation Council also slammed Trump's pledge, saying "Russia will never recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights."

Oleg Morozov said Trump’s move is aimed at splitting the Arab world and undermine Syria and its “partnership with Russia.”

Last week, in its annual human rights report, the US State Department dropped the phrase “Israeli-occupied” from the Golan Heights section, instead calling it “Israeli-controlled.”

Netanyahu has for weeks been stepping up longstanding Israeli requests for the US and others to recognize the occupied Golan as Israeli territory.

Trump’s announcement came as Pompeo was wrapping up a two-day trip to Jerusalem al-Quds during which he made a controversial visit to the Buraq Wall, called by Israel as the Wailing Wall, in the Old City.

The visit made him the highest-ranking US official to visit the site with any Israeli leader and appeared to further signal the Trump administration’s support for Israel’s control of the contested city.

In December 2017, Trump formally recognized Jerusalem al-Quds as the so-called capital of Israel and later moved the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city which Palestinians view as the capital of their future state.

Pompeo’s visit also appeared to signal Trump’s support for Netanyahu who is facing a tough challenge in the upcoming elections and reeling from a series of corruption scandals.

Pentagon Deploys B-52 Bombers to Europe in Message to Russia Amid Nuclear Tensions

March 21, 2019 at 9:34 pm
Written by
Jason Ditz

(ANTIWAR.COM) — The Pentagon has sent six nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to Europe for training exercises with European NATO member nations, in a move which officials are presenting as a “message” to Russia.

Though officials tried to present this as a response to Russian “aggression,” in practice Russia hasn’t done anything in quite some time. Rather, the deployment appears to be timed to the fifth year anniversary of Crimea’s accession into the Russian Federation, which the US opposes.

The nuclear bombers will be operating out of RAF Fairford in Britain for the time being. This isn’t the only set of B-52 US bombers being positioned within range of Russia, however, with another set exercises in the north Pacific, off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

Potentially nuclear-related deployments are likely to add to pressure for Russia to add to its own deployments in western Russia, as they attempt to retain some sort of deterrence as the US works on intermediate-range missiles and threatens more deployments into Europe.
