FEATURING SOON: AMEDEO MODIGLIANI (1884 - 1920)
5/10/2010 1:34:45 AM

Dear Friends and Visitors,

This is just to announce our upcoming presentation of the great Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (1884 - 1920), the rival of Pablo Picasso, who worked mainly in France and would become widely known in the world of art by his mask-like faces and elongated forms.

Modigliani's presentation has been thought of at a suggestion of my dear friend and mentor Sara Gardner whom I wish to express my thankful recognition here.

Your Friend,

Luis Miguel Goitizolo

Luis,

I await with interest.

The growth of modern art form is something that I have become more interested in as I start to paint my own work.

Roger

Hello Roger,

Welcome back.

I must confess I was not particularly interested in Modigliani or his work until recently, but then I discovered this painting by him which I guess you will be interested in too.

Amedeo Modigliani - Portrait of Diego Rivera (1914)

It seems he painted portraits of contemporary artists and friends in Montparnasse. Clearly he could not paint Diego Rivera in his style of elongated figures, the latter being a corpulent man.

We are all learning indeed.

Hugs,

Luis Miguel Goitizolo

P.S. I can imagine how excited you are as you start to paint your own works.

Luis,

I see what you mean about The Diego Rivera painting.

Strangely, the elongated faces, although obviously not accurate, they demand that you focus upon the face and the faces really do show the character of the people very well.

Strangely, or perhaps by design, the faces show more of the character than of the emotion present.

I find that I like his work better than I expected.

Roger

You are right as usual Roger, though to be frank, I still have to find a Modigliani that really impresses me as a great master work, one that makes me say WOW (though I must admit, I almost never say WOW at anything).

Maybe the one below? It is a ferocious portrait of a lady, with in my opinion lots of creativity in it, and it bears the mark of the genius. Note that it was painted in 1916, four years before his death.

I think Modigliani's life was too short; a few years more and he could have produced genuine masterpieces on a par with those of the world's greatest artists. What a pity. As it was, he somehow almost became a prisoner of his own style of elongated figures, though as you aptly point out, this in no way diminished his merits as a portraitist, on the contrary, it further stressed them.

Hugs,

Luis Miguel G.
