| | THE EDGE: A WINDING MOUNTAIN ROAD By Cheryl Ellen Baxter | th | Imagine a road that winds all the way up and around a mountain. The path curves and dips coming very close to the edge of the mountainside at such a precarious angle sometimes and you feel as if your going to go careening over the edge.... ..so much so, that you can feel your throat tighten and your jaws clench. Just now you feel drops of sweat beading on your brow and trickling down into your eye. The salty sting makes you want to rub your eyes, but if you do this, you are sure to go over the edge.
| The edge. You have finally come to the edge! The edge of your world. The edge of what is known. The edge of what has seemed real to you in the past. But, what is beyond the edge of your world? What is beyond the limits that you have set for yourself in the past? Your hand begins to shake noticeably as you reach out to hold on.... But what are you holding on to? You ponder this question before you take a flying leap over the edge!!! What you think about expands...and what you focus on you bring about. When you control your thoughts....you control your destiny. | Even scripture says to take every thought captive. You can develop constructive thought patterns that allow you to focus your energy, define your goals and accomplish your vision for your life. | S | Success follows the people who control their thoughts and these thoughts control their actions. The same applies to me. When I control my thoughts...I control my destiny. My thoughts control my actions that will help me be productive and give me what is beneficial to help me attain all that I want in my life. Sometimes, taking a flying leap of faith is what is necessary to move us toward our goals. That is how it was for me. I had to make a concerted effort to overcome my fears and just jump! Making the decision to let go of my past issues with self doubt and set my mind and my focus toward my goal is what I needed to do. I'm not saying that you should not plan or know what you are getting into as best you can. I am saying that fear holds us back sometimes from really experiencing the dreams and goals we set for ourselves. When fear grips you and your knuckles turn white from the anxiety of gripping onto what you know, it is time to move to the edge and contemplate jumping. More than contemplation is needed though. The action of jumping will free you and your fear and doubt, and your inhibitions will begin to melt away. For a long time I had wanted to have my own business but I stayed in a profession that was not what I wanted. Fear often keeps us from fulfilling our dreams because we think that we have to know all the answers and solve all the problems before we start. The truth is that you have to start by taking a flying leap of faith sometimes. Will there be fear? Yes, there probably will still be fear but the payoff is getting to live the life that you want to live. Success in your new endeavor may take awhile or it may not. s | Everyone is different and everyone brings different strengths, abilities and knowledge to start with, but starting is the key element that will make achieving what you want possible. | Another point that I'll leave you with is that your friends and those closest to you may need to give you a nudge every now and again. These friendly nudges may be what helps us fly as we take our leap of faith. My adventure continues and for me, there are still times of fear but there are times of great relief too. I know that the road I have taken has brought me to a jumping off point where I caught the updraft from the wind and have begun to fly. There is danger in flying. But there’s more danger in not flying. By: Cheryl Ellen Baxter © I'm including one of my favorite poems here and to me it seems appropriate for the message. Poem by Apollinaire: Come to the edge, he said. They said, we are afraid. Come to the edge, he said. They came, He pushed them And they flew. Sincerely,
