Getting to the Rootkit of Sony Music
11/12/2005 7:20:21 PM
Getting to the Rootkit of Sony Music By now I'm sure you have heard all about Sony Music's master plan to run all the computers on earth. They got their hand caught in the cookie jar and are still hoping for folks to look the other way or say "what jar?" You should know there are ways to work around this spying. When you put a music CD in the PC, it calls home and tells Sony about it. How do you get infected? Simply by buying a Sony music CD and playing it, that's all! They call it Digital Rights Management and they feel they are justified doing it for copy-protection. Well,... umm, we think it's not above board, especially since it uses rootkit technology to hide itself. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has several tips and also a list of CD's that utilize Sony-BMG's copy-protection technology called XCP. To protect yourself from XCP in the future, disable "autorun" on your Windows PC. Checkout their points on Sony-BMG self-defense: LINK: www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/004144.php The firestorm that has erupted caused Music publisher Sony BMG to backtrack in a hurry and said it would stop making CDs that use a controversial technology to protect its music against illegal copying. "As a precautionary measure, Sony BMG is temporarily suspending the manufacture of CDs containing XCP technology," it said in a statement. But in the mean time, your PC might be infected.
