Thank You Linda and Lola for comming here and sharring. I think you are both so very right in your way of thinking. I will never understand where human beings ever got the idea that abuse and intimidation would would ever work better than love and understanding. I believe that if you hit your children because they did something wrong you actually teach them two lessons. One is to not do that again. Two is that if you want something from someone and they won't give give it to you, just hit them. It worked for mommy. Hi again Bill, You are so right. I served as a weekend foster mother for a 9 month old baby boy many years ago. He was a precious child and all weekend long he didn't cry. I noticed that he put his little fist in his mouth a lot, but that seem natural for a baby his age. When I mentioned to the social worker that he never cried, she said it was because when he was with his biological parents and he did cry, he always go hit... so at that young age he had learned not to cry. That broke my heart and also helped me realize how easy it is to "scar" a child for life. Thanks for the venue to air our thoughts here.

Hi Linda To me there is nothing so cruel as hitting a little child. I will never forget one time in a resturant with my daughters. Heather and Chrissy were about 5 and 6 at the time. Anyhow, sitting not to far from us was a lady with three children sitting at a table. One of her children was a little tyke, very busy grabbing at things fron his high chair. Well Mom finally gave the baby a spoon to play with which the baby promptly threw on the floor. So now Mom figured she would teach Jr. a lesson and not let him have anything to play with. Soon, the baby started to cry. Mom said, " stop crying or I will slap you a good one. The baby cried and mom slapped and the baby cried harder and mom slapped him harder. I couldn't stand so I walk over and said to mom. "when a baby cries, it is because they are not happy and slapping them will not make them happy. Well she became unglued that I would step in. I then explained that it was very easy to stop a child from crying and I handed the spoon back to the baby and the baby was happy again. Well mom was not happy at all and began yelling at me. That's when other people in the resturant stood up and told her the same thing I had been telling. A bunch of people joined in. Finally the lady just gathered up her kids and left but I know one thing. She will at least not ever hit her children in a resturant again. I hope she never hit one of them again. My neice had bi polar disorder. On Boxing Day night I took her to the hospital hoping she would be admitted (We live in Melbourne Australia) There were many sick people in the emergency department. Some old, some babies, they nearly all were physically unwell. There were 2 others who were mentally unstable. One was threatening violence, the other thought her husband was dead and lying beside her. It was an awful place to be. We arrived at 5 pm and did not see a doctor until midnight. My neice kept saying she was ok and we should leave. But I convinced her to stay. Finally at 12.30 am they decided she needed to be admitted, but there were no beds available. The dr said he would sedate her and keep her in the emergency dept overnight. I finally left and came home. My neice walked out soon after me. She spent the night doing I do not know what. Finally she was found and is now and involuntary patient of a psych hospital. Mental illness can be so debilitating. She cannot separate reality from her delusions, her mind is racing with thoughts, she sees cameras that read her mind, she believes her mother is trying to poison her. It is so awful for her. It is not her fault, she does not put it on or make it up, she is in torment.

Hello Cheryl First, I want to say that my heart goes out to your neice and all of your family. Austalia unfortunately, is no exception when it comes to mental health care. It is usually too little, too late and terribly inadaquet. Bipolar and schizophrenia are two of the most devastating illnesses known to man and yet there is so little being done to learn about them and find better treatment. The hospitals are full, mental health care professionals are in short supply and governments around the world don't seem to care. Here is bippolar at it's worst. Just yesterday I learned that one of my 9 year old sons friends, who is bipolar, father has shot himself in the face. we are still waiting to hear if he survived. Father is also bipolar. I have this little boy here with me who doesn't know that his father is most likely dead. Two weeks ago tis little boy tried to run away from home. Children and youth services, felt there was no need to intervene when the little boy ran away from home and now his father is probably dead. Folks, at the first sign of a serious mental illness, demand help. Get your loved one to safety and demand help for them untill you get it. Organize community groups for support and planning stratagies for forcing change to the failing mental health systems around the world. Contact your political leaders and make them undestand that without their support, families suffering from the effects of metal illness are being destroyed and lives are being wasted and lost. Make sure that if you have the priveledge to vote, do it and make sure that you vote for people who care about the way people are suffering. Cheryl, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your neice. Hold on to your neice and love her. Make sure that she doesn't get lost in the system and that she receives the care she needs. There is effective treatment now for serious mental illnesses. Her quality of life could very well be improved with the proper care. Good luck to you Cheryl and if their is ever anything that I can do to help , please let me know. Maybe I will have some information that isn't available where you're at or maybe you or someone in your family just needs someone to talk to. Whatebver I can do .please let me know OK Cheryl. Try to keep the faith girl, there are mental illness stories with a happy ending and your might bwe one of them.
