Let's Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

Are you Irish?  Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day?

Éirinn go Brách

(Ireland forever)

Well now St. Patrick's Day wouldn't exist if
not for the man himself! But how much do we know about him? Did you know that he spent six years of slavery in Ireland until he escaped and undertook religious training abroad?

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

Danny Boy
music traditional, words Marc Gunn 9/25/2003

This cat song is based on the Irish American folk song, "Danny Boy". Many people don't realize that cats are largely nocturnal creatures. This is the reason they are most active in the middle of the night... and three in the morning when you're trying to sleep. This song is inspired by those sleepless nights. Look for it on my Whiskers in the Jar: Irish Songs for Cat Lovers CD.

Oh Danny Boy, the alarm is not yet ringing.
But I awake with you licking me on my cheek.
The morning's come too soon, and you won't stop meowing.
Why won't you let me get one good night's sleep.

At 3am, I awoke. You were at the window.
You pawed the blinds and meowed loudly to the air.
I threw a pillow and, said, "Would you be quiet!"
You thought a game, and came to chew my hair.

When I come home tonight to find you sleeping.
You look so sweet in the chair that you sheared.
I'll wonder why I have this great desire
To watch you run as I yell into your ear.

For my revenge is only just beginning.
Not a moment's rest, this evening you will see!
'Til 11pm, when I lay down and am dreaming
Then I will sleep in peace... until... the... morn-ing!

First of all may I wish all Irish People at Adland,   a

H A P P Y   S T. P A T R I C K S  D A Y

---------------

Secondly,

I have discovered that my roots are Irish. I was brought up by an English mother and a father who thought that he was a Scottish decendant, although scottish connections exist, the root of my name is from McDaid and comes from Donegal in The Irish Republic.

I am VERY PROUD to have this Irish connection.

I love the Irish approach to life, their respect for learning, their humour and music and most of all their massive contribution to modern life throughout the world.

History has been cruel to this wonderful people and has tended to either suppress or disperse it's people, which in turn has led to their worldwide influence.

What I don't like is the image of leprechauns and pixies and big green hats and yuck! This is a nation that should be above all of the tourist stuff which may bring in money but doesn't promote the great people and resources that they share.

I say "Be proud to be Irish" not " Be silly to be Irish" , I hope I offend nobody, it is not my intention.
