MY  66  YEAR  HISTORY

By Dean Beaty 1/2/09

I often write of others who grace our family tree.

Of course I always do it with tact and dignity.

Sometimes within my poems I take some liberty.

But seldom do I ever think to speak of me.

There are so many stories.  You’ve heard them all before.

Like when I shot my foot with a magnum forty-four.

Or when I lost my memory and got called in by the cops.

Or going against the rules, wearing socks with my flip flops.

If I include my brothers and what they did to “moi”. (French= me)

Like Don all by himself almost killed your dear papaw.

He pushed me in the Ohio and stabbed me with a knife.

While David’s missed the tree and almost took my life. (twice)

My dad would tell the story of being lost in the Black Hills.

How I shot three geese at once; and other hunting skills. (2 hens)

Then there was Bob Jones, who took my skills all wrong.

They almost kicked me out when I wrote our senior song.

Time will not allow me to complete my history.

But grandsons prove the adage of apple from the tree.

Always keep your distance when a sibling has a knife.

The greatest thing by far was taking Gladys for my first wife.

KURT’S  LITTLE  BLACK  BOOK

By his father-in-law (Dean Beaty 1/11/09)

With the generosity of Susie Coooper

Thank you for the calendar, its arrival was in time

To save my son-in-law from loosing reason and his rhyme.

A chicken with its head off can find a grain of corn.

But not knowing what came next had left him quite forlorn.

It’s good that school was out therefore no activities.

The buses could not roll to teach the ABC’s.

But now he’s back on track for he has his new black book.

Life is back to normal and we are off the hook.

It’s this current generation.  They can’t use a sundial.

A rotary type phone would take them quite a while.

They’ve never used an outhouse and everything is ‘lectrified.

Even simple games of chess, soon they’ll want a ‘lectric bride.

Do not forget next year or we’ll suffer the same fate.

Too bad they can’t use brain power to remember just a date.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Don’t forget the pictures of your dear sweet progeny.

p.s.  Happy birthday now to me.  Today I’m sixty-six.

My mind says forty-three but my body contradicts.

So what’s a guy to do when his body’s not the same?

Transplant a new body and I’ll keep the same old name.

LEAH GABRIELLE AT FOURTEEN By Papaw Beaty 8/18/09 If I could only start again, Fourteen is where I would begin. For it is such a magic age. You need not work to earn a wage. School is easy when you’re so smart And many things are at their start. For now you’ve found that boys are cute. And flirting is your main pursuit. But you are only having fun And you’ll not settle for only one. That is still many years away. But just for now it’s fun to play. At every turn you steal the scene. Yes, it is great to be fourteen. So stay fourteen for a full year. Bring joy to others far and near. All your talents will take you far. You are raising a superstar. Your wit and charm are quite enough. You’re like a diamond in the rough.
