Re: JUST FOR FUN: Where are all the Wal-Marts? Posted: Jun 25 2007 07:28 AM |
Hi Joe,
There isn't a Wal-mart in the town I actually live in, but there is a Wal-mart in the next town about 20 minutes from me. I do shop there for some things. I try to stay away from Saturdays. It has a Dunkin Donuts in it. The store always seems dirty, however, they just started to make some rennovations and the last time I was in there the appearance was much better. There also is a Super Wal-mart in another town about 20 minutes south. That store is much larger, with groceries, auto center, hair salon, etc. I occasionally shop at this one too.
Have a Scent-sational day!

WARNING: Respect for each other must be maintained.
I have never had to make a post like this before... ever in all my time online... until now. It is a shame that it has come down to this.
The reason for this post is a simple topic has gotten things turned around to very much off topic. It is not really that it has turned to an off topic subject, but a level of disrespect was shown in here. As the forum owner, I am taking responsibility to keep some civility present.
Let this be a warning that in my forums I will not tolerate spam, curse/foul words, disrespect, flaming, name calling, attacking and dumbing down other people's opinions. I reserve the right to add to this list as needed and to ban anyone who cannot abide by these rules.
Keep it friendly and everyone will have a good time. Before I ban anyone, their comments will be copied and posted to the Adland officials for the record.
All I ask is that you respect each other's opinions and the integrity of this forum. Then we'll all be happy.
Thank you.

Hello Joe,
Since I arrived in the States, first in Redding, California there was a Wal-Mart, I do not remember what was inside as this was the first time I had been in such a huge shop in my life and I was overwhelmed by the size. I still am as it is so easy to loose James when he goes down an aisle out of my sight. Then we moved to Springfield, Oregon and there was not a Wal-Mart but two in Eugene (twin cities) about a year after we moved Wal-Mart build their store in Springfield on a big vacant field they bought. Jerry's Hardware store build their 2nd huge store right next door and other business started popping up around this area like Quiznoes which at the time they did not have an outlet in either Eugene or Springfield, when we left there were about 6 of them opened.
Wal-mart, Springfield was just in the process of expanding their store to incorporate the grocery line as all 3 stores were just standard. They had inside fast-food like McDonalds, or Burger King a photographic store and optomitrist. Outside they have a vehicle repair garage to take your vehicles for service. We could take our soda cans and bottles back and receive 5 cents from all big soda outlet stores too e.g. Safeway, Albertsons, Meyers, Wal-mart etc. There was no Sam's Club as there was a Coscoe store in Eugene.
Cheyenne, Wyoming our next move had Wal-mart and Sam's Club. Wal-mart had McDonalds, optomitrist, Car maintance garage, grocery, bread, meat etc so I think you call this Wal-mart Superstore..
In Nebraska we live half way between Lincoln and Omaha, both cities have Wal-mart and we mostly shop at Omaha which is the Superstore with grocery, meat, etc line and also has Sam's club. Inside the Wal-mart they have McDonalds, another Fast food store (don't recall what it called not a large franchise that we all know) Optomitrist, Hairdresser and Vehicle maintance garage. They all have the big garden center attached.

Hi Joe,
You do know I live in the South, right, A.K.A., the Wal-Mart Capitol of the World. At the present time, there is one Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Thomasville, two SuperCenters in Greensboro, two SuperCenters in Winston Salem, one SuperCenter in Randleman, one SuperCenter and one Regular store in Asheboro, and currently one Regular store with a SuperCenter set to open July 15th in High Point. Therefore, within a 20-25 mile radius of my front door, there are 10 stores at the present time.
There are less than a half-dozen, what would be considered Mom & Pop stores left in Thomasville per se., although that is not necessasarily due to Wal-Mart. They do provide a lot of jobs, however, the latest figures that were shown to us at Town Council when they were getting ready to build the current store, were that 70% of the Full-Time Employees (30 hrs), can qualify for Food Stamps, and although Dependent Health Benefits are available, 80% of the Full-Time Employees do not participate, since they cannot afford them given their current wages. Doesn't that get down to quantity vs. quality?
Since I personally do 85%-90% of my shopping Online, I can't say that they have any impact on my shopping habits. I do have to admit that their Employees are always good candidates for my MLM businesses, since they are always needing to make extra money.
Hope this helps.
Have A Great Day,
Phil |
