VOTE For POTW, POTM OR ........!!!

Hello Adland Friends!

For a while now we've been experiencing a drastic drop in voting and support for the POTW. In the past few weeks much can be attributed to the difficulties and issues AdlandPro has been experiencing (problems logging in, emails not delivered and more). But overall the drop is noticable. We realize other forums have also had a drop in participation and we've been discussing ways to turn this around.

One of the options discussed is to change the POTW in certain minor ways or possibly more drastic steps need to be taken.

We've decided to have a poll this week about the different possibilities and are interested to see what our friends and supporters think and have to say.

One thing is certain that out of a community of close to 85,000 members there are many that meet the criteria and are worthy of the recognition.

Regardless of the outcome of the poll the criteria and rules will remain the same and the future polls will be a continuation of the POTW as it stands today. Namely the next winner will be # 160.

We appreciate your participation, thoughts and votes on this issue.

How Do I Get Selected as Person of the Week?

To be chosen as Person of the week you:

• Are highly visible on the community

In the past 350 post were the minimum requirement, we

aren't locked in on that number but a minimum of 300 posts

is mandatory. Posts that are mainly advertising posts will not be considered.

Please note highly visible with a positive influence in and on the community means just that. You have to have an activeforum and/or be active in community forums that are not adthreads.

• Are always seen as respectful, professional, and helpful.

• Must be nominated for the program by another member

of the Community and voted on by other members.

Hello, POTW TEAM!!!

I was saddened the last couple of weeks. It is hard not to notice the drop in participation. There is even a drop in the number of nominations and the # of voters is less than half of what it used to be. Quite honestly, I do not get foum notifications, even though they are turned on, until I have posted in them. Do your forum notifications go out to the ENTIRE community or are the confined to the friends on your list? I have to go to the POTW profile and look up each forum each week- or use Joe's Bulleting Board.

Whatever you decide will have my backing 100%. What I would love to see happen is for us to find a way of enticing new participation, and bring back some of the old as well. How we go about doing that is a bit beyond me, but I am willing to help if I can.

My vote is in and I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to you Jim, Peter and Ana for all of the hard work and dedication you put into this forum!!

Dear POTW Team,

I definitely hear your concern about participation. It is this way all over Adland. When the BFA account was created, Pauline and I had to start from scratch to build back up the numbers. The only easy part about it is the wonderful regulars who just knew to watch for it. Plus, we have spent time inviting new members to join and participate.

About those 85,000 or so registered members here at Adland. If you will wonder through many of those accounts, you will find that they never spent any time here. I call them drive-bys. LOL!!!!

Now about the poll you have going here:

First, I have to say that I will go with what ever is decided.

Secondly, I would not like to see it become a monthly event, because John Partington all ready has a monthly award that recognizes our friends here in the community - Just Perfect Award! He does a splendid job too I might ad.

Thirdly, It is a privilege to get to wander through the salutations each week. I think depression would wrap her arms around Adland real fast! It is the caffeine of my week!

Fourthly, thank you Judy for using the Bulletin Board. It is updated each week with the new election links, nomination link, congratulatory links for ALL of the election forums of which the POTW is included!

Fifthly, I hope that I didn't miss the point of this poll.

How do we resolve the low numbers of participation? I think it involves a plan. A plan to target new members by introducing them the benefits of voting and being here. With the BFA, our purpose is to increase the community activity by way of encouraging members to create forums. Professional looking forums have a good chance of winning some $$$. With that said, I think we can all help promote all of the electorial forums and increase participation throughout Adland. Invite new members regularly!

Thanks for the support and pointers.

We are constantly looking for ways to interest new members and old to participate in the POTW as voters and to nominate their friends in the new polls.

I too prefer the weekly poll for many reasons and one of them certainly is John Partingtons JP award.

I've been considering this poll for a while now but this week when there were no new nominations I decided this was the right time to do it.

One would think that past POtWs would be amongst the weekly voters and supporters of this forum.

MANY of them are BUT more aren't. That in itself is quite disappointing but many might have had an agenda in receiving the award and then just went to greener pastures. Very sad in my humble opinion.

We will continue to do all we can to get more people involved and in this way build up the forum to what it once was.

I agree, it saddens me too and that's why we're trying to find a solution to the problem.

Are you a member of the feature of the week forum??? If you are you should be getting the notifications for all the threads each week. Same goes for the Photo of the week. Just click on "add to favorites" in both forums and you should get the email notifications.

As I wrote over the past weeks Adland has experienced some problems and many emails didn't go out in addition to difficulties logging on. That is part of the problem but not all of it for sure.

We certainly appreciate your support and friendship.

I agree with Joe and Heidi - I need to resend my vote which was to make it a monthly event and keep it weekly - It's been a weekly recognition forever and should remain so - I don't know what I was thinking except for the hard work that you guys put into it. Adland is usually a bit slower over the summer months. If we make a plan, as Joe suggested to rekindle interest, then as the activity on ALP increases as it always does over the winter months the activity in the forum will increase too.

I am willing to do whatever it takes to keep it alive and well - so let me know.

Now, Peter, I am a friend of the POTW - is the Featured Person of the week a whole other forum? Maybe we are spreading this award and recogniton thing too thin? I don't know. I fell into the forum with Gabby as the FPOTW by accident the other day. I did not receive a notification of it. So - send the links and I will join up.

The name of the forum that hosts the POTW is the Feature Of The Week (Person Of The Week). It's been like that from the beginning.

Now the post that Jim made in regard to the FPOTW was about an award in a Ning community called ULearn2Earn. It has nothing to do with Adland and Jim didn't make that clear in the post even though there were links there to the Ning community. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

This topic is of great intereste to me, so I'm back! LOL!!!

One thing that I have struggled with in keeping tabs on the POTW is the start and finish times. I'm not sure how it was a year ago, but it seems that everything became a bit offset. I am a bit dyslexic, so bear with me on this.

I would find it helpful to end the elections on a specific day, and then start the new election on the day the congratulatory forum for the previous winner is posted. One example would be to end elections on Friday night. Post the congratulatory and new election on Monday or late Sunday night. I think right now they end on a Thursday and the next election starts on Friday and then the congratulatory is posted on Monday. It would definitely help me with a tighter schedule. Just a thought...

About consistency throughout the community, it seems that most of the feature forums have slipped a lot this year. It more than likely had a lot to do with notification failures. I looked into this and found that a lot of forums that I was signed up to be notified was no longer so. I had to manually reactivate them. It took a lot of time, but was worth it. I guess I better go look again after the recent missing notifications.

I do not want to forget this time in saying that I commend you and your team for all that they do AND for reaching out to the community for help and ideas. It's like sending out a hug! LOL!!

Thanks for coming back, much appreciated.

The voting for the forum is from Friday and ends on midnight the following Thursday. The winner is notified immediately and is asked to supply his/her bio as soon as possible so that I can prepare their winners thread on Saturday. In 99% of the "cases" I had the cooperation of the winner and their thread was up on Saturday.

Adland admin post the POTW winner's picture and trophy on Monday. So it is basically a celebration that starts on the weekend.

I feel that this is an awesome forum. I concur with Judy, you all work so hard at this forum and it is a super way to get people involved with each other. Please find a way to get this out to the whole Adland Community and not just to your friends list, if at all possible. Yes there were problems these last couple of weeks with logging in to Adland. However, I think that the problem has been rectified and everything is back to normal.

Our emails don't go out only to our friends list (TG) but to all the members of the POTW forum. At present we have 1250 members. Once again I recommend that those of you who aren't members of this forum to click on the my favorites link and many notification problems will be resolved.

Even when you have a large friends list if the friend doesn't choose to opt in to your forum when they receive the first notification they'll no longer receive emails from you.

I also have experienced not getting email notifications like I used to in order to know about important postings. And most recently while I appreciate being a free member and hope to be able to upgrade one day, my forum "notifications" were not reset at the beginning of September like in past months (seeking to resolve this). Therefore nobody is getting the notification when I post a new "free ad thread" or a new "Profile of the Day," so what is the point? Anyway, I have voted. Good luck, Steve

If I may put my 3 cents in here..

I would like to say that the time and effort that all of you have put into keeping this forum alive and well is commendable and much appreciated.

I feel that the POTW nominees should be open for everyone not just for those that have not yet worn the crown. As I see it there are members here that deserve to be recognized often as they are always active and supportive. I am sure you are thinking of the same folks as I am so I won't note the names here.. yet, wink wink.

But in the spirit of motivating and inspiring I think this may help to rekindle and or spark the interest.

After all, leading by example is one of the best ways to inspire, encourage and teach others. And we really do have some great leaders here among us and I would love to see them being recognized for this. If they show consistent activities such as those mentioned why not give them the just Kudos they deserve even if it is more than one time awarded?

I understand your point and it is a valid one. As you know one of the rules is that a person can be POTW only once. It is a thought and can be brought to the table again. Thanks for bringing it up.

When Adland was experiencing its "problems" Bogdan told me it was a yahoo issue. So I change to a gmail email BUT i never got the verification email. I changed it back to yahoo and got the verification email. So the problems were more then just issues with yahoo. As of this moment I'm getting emails on a steady basis (with yahoo) until the next time. :)

Hi Team, I understand your concern as we all feel that forums receive little support anymore.

Here are some thoughts to share with you for your consideration.

>>Your profile reveals that you have 83 friends and of those only 64 are active (many have not been here for several months). Of those 64 not all post in forums and perhaps even have all their mail shut off. I just checked and found that I was not on your friends list, so I arrive for the vote and congratulaltions via another invite. New people do not know how to do that, necessarily.

When John started, it looks like he had over 1,400 in his friends list. Please PLEASE do not be telling people their are 85,000 members here, as we all know that is the number who visited here and put something in their profile page. Invite 100 people and you will hear from about 10. Of ten, 1 will stick around for awhile. Right now we lost a lot of people because of some crises in a top business where a lot of people got hurt. Thus they leave here and network marketing.

To build a large friends list, most of use set a portion of everyday to add new people to our list of friends. Bless you team but you all have a business to run and you own forums to monitor.

>>Your profile could hold a little more information for those who come across you profile pic. For example it could have the url for voting. You could have the use of the blog to explain about the procedure for voting and the benefits of being POTW.

Hi Peter Jim & Anamaria,

I have voted to keep the POTW Award as a weekly event, because this way a lot more members have a greater chance of receiving recognition for their contribution to Adlandpro.

Also there are a number of monthly awards including my own JP Award that features members on a monthly basis, I am not being negative but as Joe Downing has already pointed out the recent problems with logging in and receiving email notifications may have had something to do with it.

As Joe has also mentioned that there are 85,000 members only a small fraction are active, I estimate that only 10% of the total membership uses the site on a regular basis. I feel that the main problem is that new members are overwhelmed by the amount of email messages they receive, so they login and cancel all notification messages!

I for one can't understand this because all they have to do with any message they receive that they don't want to read is to delete it. Also adlandpro is very easy to use when you have taken the time to read the user information that is sent to new members.

I can only assume that 50% of new members are dyslexic or the more common malaise called "Thick as Pig Shit" so until they learn who to get the best out of the site, the problem will remain. I have even got my own help forum for any adlandpro member who wants to ask a question, but even this forum is not visited on a regular basis.

So in conclusion you must realise that you are only going to attract 10 to 20% of members at any given time, so keep up your good work on a weekly basis and ask Bogdan to get rid of the opt out on forum notifications, because thats the only way things will improve.

But having said that adlandpro will loose a large number of members due to the loss of this facility, so please keep the POTW as a weekly event and just hope that we get some new members who have more than one brain cell.

I can't help but smile after reading your post in your "unique" style.

I have to agree with most of your conclusions and my preference is also the weekly format. I know as you, Joe and Mary mentioned the 85,000 is mostly comprised by what I call hit and runners but I'll settle for 10% of the 85,000. You know what??? I'll settle for 1% of the 85,000. How about 0.50%?? I'll settle for that too; gladly. :)

That said, there are many that don't take the time to learn how to benefit to the fullest from their adland membership.They are here for ad posting only and the name of the community is AdlandPro after all. They aren't getting much response I'll bet cos they don't bother using social network marketing in the way it should be used. Eventually some learn the majority won't. We'll try and get those that learn to support our forums and those of our friends.

Thank you Peter, Ana Maria, and Jim, we appreciate all that you do with the POTW Awards Team.

I have had a lot of problems with AdLandPro in the short time that I have been a member. Not getting emails was the most recent one. It might not have been ALP fault but rather my ISP. I think they thought they were doing me a favor by treating all messages from ALP as spam. Following a suggestion from Bogdan I too changed the email address that I used to log in. Now I am getting the notifications again.

I think that most people when the have problems with something they avoid it. That may be why so many have left and not returned.

I voted to keep the POTW the way that it is. Just as ALP is one of my favorite communities, the POTW is one of my favorite forums.

My problems with AdLandPro are not totally sorted out, but do not want to discuss them here. I do not want to detract from the positive nature of this forum. I will post a thread over at the How 2 Of AdLand Pro forum to see if anybody else is having the same problems (opportunities for improvement) and see if we can't work together to make this a problem free comunity.

If you tried the link to the How 2 Of AdLandPro forum and it did not work, that was my experience too. There are other ways of getting there though. If you click on my profile and then forums you will find it. Here is the URL: http://community.adlandpro.com/forums/thread/1107136.aspx.

Now as for this forum it has been a valuable tool in my education of how 2 at ALP. There are the winners of course and it is good to watch and learn what winners do. But there are also the regulars that post each week here and in other great forums.

I learn a lot by reading what they say, watching what they do, and then trying to do the same things. We all have much in common. Most of us I would guess have our own home based businesses or at least an interest in social networking. Of course we would like to attract people to our opportunities and products, but I do not see that as the main focus in this forum. The people who are are featured here as winners, and almost equally important, as voters are the most caring people in this community.

So far only 32 people have voted and it is just slightly leaning in the direction of keeping it as a weekly vote instead of a monthly vote. Personally I look forward to see a new face after a week when I log in. Not that they are not nice pictures and all, but a month of anybody up there might attract darts after a while. Just kidding...LOL

I am going to send a message out to all of my friends inviting them over here to cast their vote and save this forum to their favorites. Imagine if everybody that could do that would. Do you think that we might get a few more than 32 votes.

Hi Ken,

Yes, I did have a problem with your link but I found that if you click on the first letter it takes you to your forum. You must have hyper linked it twice when the first letter wasn't highlighted the first time or vice versa.

Once again you understood the spirit of this thread. It's for the vote of course but also to understand and read what our friends and supporters have to say. Ultimately our decision will be based on the final results of the votes AND what our friends feel and think.

It would be nice if all our friends would send out reminders to their friends list. It would increase the participation for sure. We'll be sending out additional posts from our other forums and our messaging facility.

Congrats Joyce & Phil, on the VOTW !!!!

My votes in, and I do vote every week without fail, I might not post as I am very constrained for time. But vote I do faithfully at all the voting forums. :-)

I would like to see the POTW remain the POTW, but I also know it involves a lot of work, as maintaining forums require from time to time.

It is saddening to see the vote count drop and many members who have had the thrill of winning the POTW participate no more.

As one who helped John run this forum for a year, I would would like to say this that there is a lot of work that goes in to keeping these forums running, my friends you all have no idea how much effort it takes ...if only you all knew :-) The least we could expect from our members is regular support to make it all worthwhile. as John would say.. we have 160 potw's on an average 50% of this plus some new members participation I think 100 votes on an average turnout would be good. But as we see this is not so and it is sad. I would not blame it on the malfunctions of Adland. This trend has been going on for quite a while before the breakdown in the system. Yes maybe a wee %age could.

Past winners were and are very active members, dont tell me they dont know where to go to find the potw forum and need the notifications to tell them! I personally have bookmarked all the voting forums among many of my favorites that I keep tabs on. So.........

I would appeal to all our past winners to come together to make this event as memorable an event as it is intended to be, and to bring back the community spirit its supposed to spread.

I think Adland is the best place on the net, and there are awesome members who inspire and help spread love and warmness throughout the community, I hope I get to see a miracle happen and all pull together to keep the POTW alive and running well.

Can't agree with you more. I mentioned in an earlier posts that there are enough POTW winners in adland to keep the participation up. Many do but more don't. That's very questionable on it's own me thinks.

First of all, Thanks again for all of your hard work and tireless dedication to providing us with such a wonderful Forum and the opportunity Each Week to honor another Friend for their contributions to our Great Little Community. You assumed a difficult task and not only did you hit the ground running, you do a Top-Notch Job each week providing a quality Forum of which to be proud.

I appreciate the honor of being selected as one of the Voters of the Week, although I really can't imagine not voting each week. Congratulations Joyce, on being selected as the other Voter of the Week. Stop and think how much that kind of exposure would cost us if we were paying by the Hit! Thanks again my Friends.

As you can probably tell by how many times I mention Week exactly how I voted. There are many reasons for choosing to remain Weekly, however many of my Friends have already listed most of them, and I agree.

As far as a drop in participation, I'm sure that some of it can be attributed to Server problems, Notification problems, or whatever has been happening here at ALP over the past month or so. As Judy mentioned, it's Summer and Vacation, so participation always drops off. Also, the folks down on the Gulf have been occupied with Gustav for the past few weeks, and now bless their hearts, they may be welcoming Ike before too much longer. While most of you aren't addicts about it like I am, it's also Election time. In fact, had it not been for Hanna cutting through NC this morning, I wouldn't be here now, but instead would have been in Raleigh, NC, for a Rally. Long story short, it will get better. This is without question, the Friendliest and in my opinion, the Best Community on the Web. We are not about to let a Terrific Forum such as the POTW fall by the wayside without a fight.

It's interesting that some of our friends that voted for the monthly poll had second thoughts and sent me PMs asking that I disregard their initial vote and they want the POTW to remain as is.

We'll have to wait and see what the final result will be but regardless the final decision will be based on the spirit of the many that posted here and it's obvious what the majority want.

Sorry you missed your "rally in Raleigh" and if I were in the States now I'd be very active too. BUT, have no fear you'll have many rallies to go to until the elections. :)

I voted for POTW. I would like to make the case why it is essential to keep POTW.

I have been a member of AdLand for almost nine and a half months. POTW forum was the very first forum on Adland that allowed me to be active, to participate, to be noticed in a very warm and friendly environment, and to be recognized and rewarded for my merits. And these significant characteristics of the POTW forum have made AdLand community the best social and business network site to me.

I have regularly participated in the POTW forum.

I feel that those AdLanders who choose not to participate in the POTW forum are really missing the boat big time. It takes no more than 5 minutes to vote and post every week, and each participating Adlander will have his or her photo and signature line displayed for as long as 5 days a week on the POTW forum. By participating, every AdLander has a chance to be selected to be Voter of The Week. His or her photo will be displayed for a whole week on this forum. Best of all, every participant may be nominated for the POTW Award. The photo of the POTW winner will be displayed on AdLand front page for a whole week so that this POTW winner will be seen by the other 85,000 AdLanders when they log in.

If any AdLanders do not see the mentioned benefits a big enough incentive to participate in the POTW forum, I think that they have made up their mind to treat AdLand as a place to put ads, nothing more than that. For those Adlanders, community spirit, making friends, and genuine networking are not existing in their mind. I am afraid that only cash awards may move some of them.

I participate in the POTW forum because I like casting votes and enjoy showing my appreciation to the winner of the POTW Award with congratulations.

I do not think low participation in the POTW forum is unique in the AdLand community. I have noticed that practically all organizations, both online and off line, suffer the same malaise. It seems that always the same handful of members do all the work to keep the club alive.

I would like to suggest that when each of us have new members on our friends list we keep reminding the new members the benefits of participating in the POTW forum and giving them the link to the POTW forum. I remember one time Peter posted a button, "Have You Voted?" on one of the threads of my forum along with his comment related to that thread. I think that such a friendly reminder is effective.

In any case, I will be supportive of your decision.

Thanks for your contribution to this discussion.

You raised some very valid points that many are missing or do not completely understand the benefits of participating in the weekly POTW contest and winners thread. The exposure is great in many ways.

I found many new friends that posted here for the first time after joining Adland. If I'm not mistaken you were one of them. If I remember correctly your first post was in the POTW forum and I immediately invited you to be a friend. :) On a personal level I don't "hunt" new members that join adland but wait and see who is active. The bottom line is that those that joined adland for posting ads only aren't potential "anythings" for our business ventures. Just a personal opinion.

Yes, business is down all over the world both on and off line but it's still frustrating to see the low voting stats week after week and even worse the low stats on those that do vote but don't bother to post. What's it take and additional minute??

First off, ^5 and kudo's to each of you for your continued dedication in keeping the POTW award flying steadily since John's departure. Pauline deserves an honorary mention here as well. :)

I, personally, keep the winning of POTW (#106) very close to me. Every week, I post who the new King or Queen is for that particular time...it's one of the ways I recognize and promote for my friends here. Plus, I like to keep my thread active so it doesn't get lost in the pages. 7700+ views to boot and counting!!

You know, I recall when the ballot had a steady 5 to 7 faces every week like clockwork. But, the 84,000+ member total includes ALL of Adland, not only the Adland community. A person joins, never enters our community, and only places classified ads...they are included in the total member count. So, that number is a bit misleading. A better perspective would be a total community count, based on anyone who has posted in a forum at least 1 time, or something similar, so it could be tracked.

WOW, I hope that I"m not putting anyone to sleep here...zzzzzzzzzzz. :)

You know, new people aren't joining our friendly community in droves, so eventually potential POTW nominee's will dry up. Just a thought here, we may have to launch a POTW2 election in the near future. It sure would stimulate a lot of excitement and invigorate all active members...I am sure.

You can be as loquacious as you wish here. That's what we're interested in finding out in addition to the physical vote what our friends think about the poll, POTW and what direction it should take in the future.

As I said in a few previous posts the vote on its own will not be the deciding factor but the spirit of the posts are as important if not more important.

We appreciate your support and the links yo the 2 POTWs in your forum. Kudos on the 7700 (and running)views very impressive!!! :)

You are not the first to raise the issue of POTW2 or something in that order. There are problems with that but we'll consider that option too. You will be surprised that there are many Adlanders that are active in the community (not only ad posters) that many of us are not aware of. As there are some very good forums that we are not all members of. We are interested in attracting them to the POTW and other worthy forums in order to get to know them better.

In any case I appreciate your sharing with us and the truth is I expected no less from you. You are definitely one of our great friends.

Peter, Jim and Ana Maria, I have voted. It must be very difficult for you to do this every week because even before one is completed you are working on another one. Whatever you decide to do is fine with me. I just remember how honored I was when I made POTW. Also, I can understand about the picture being there for so long - I don't think I would have wanted that.

I agree with what a lot of people have stated about it being summer, vacations, hurricanes, and the continuing posting problems that participation is off. Also, it is getting more difficult to find people to nominate.
