Thank you Nephew for this opportunity to present Geketa and her refreshing Article of Virtue. I am very please at what Geketa has written especially on her findings concerning what the woman’s role should be in today’s standards.

As a believer in Christ and His church and as a teacher of the Bible, I find that personal growth as a Christian is most important, the importance of a submissive attitude, men or woman to Christ is essential to our Spiritual growth today and tomorrow (Luke 2:51-52 and in Hebrews 5:7-9). We are not perfect but we must strive for perfection in every chance we get and that to me should be for all human beings.

Geketa, so knowledgeable and humble, you are fun to know, fun to talk with and fun in giving. You remain a faithful person I come to know who work to understands God's precepts and his faithfulness. May God always help you to do His will and walk right my friend.

SUSTAINING THE IDEAL WOMAN IN US

In today's society the perception of a woman and the role she plays has changed. This has not happened over thousands of years, but in the last 30 or so.

In the early years of my life-time, the society at least, still affirmed and had an understanding of the wife, mother and woman with those excellent qualities of the woman and wife given in the Biblical book of Proverbs 31. Today, society has ignored the principles of the model and standards described thereof and therefore left many women wondering what their roles in life, family and society are. God made men and women differently and I am sure He had good reasons and intentions. Women are not less than men, but they are different as they should be. Women are made of emotions and are nurturing by nature whereas men are strong physically and in most cases do not show their emotions quite as easily as women do. There are many similarities but each has some distinct and special traits that make them man or woman. God made us that way for some reasons.

Stop and think of the kinds of women we honor today! Who are the prototypes and who are the modern day super-women? If we were to design the perfect woman today, what would she be like? Today's woman is glamorous! According to Hollywood, a woman has to have a perfect body and be beautiful even if this means surgery, she is shrewd and cunning, competitive an over-achiever and self-centered. She sounds more like a man in many ways.

Let me explain my findings.

She would work, she is building on her career, and therefore she demands and gets equal pay with men. There is nothing wrong with equal pay if she can do the same job as a man. In some cases, submitting to her husband would be out of the question, she would demand equality with him in everything. Submission does not mean being a hand-servant; rather it means she is to be his “help-mate”. The man should be the head of the household and the leader of the family; not the boss. This perfect woman of today has her own money and her own bank account and spends it as she likes. She might have an affair and a divorce if her needs were not being met accordingly. Today's woman might even go as far as getting an abortion! She would be very independent. Her personal goals would always come first even if there were at variance with her children and her husband's needs. Today's woman hires in help for the house work and calls in designers to do the decorating. The family eats out or food is brought home as fast food. Cooking and cleaning are those things she would never think of doing. She works 8-10 hours a day. Her fulfillments would be her first priority. For this woman, it is “all about me and me alone”. This woman is a million light years away from the God fearing woman as described in Proverb 31.

How did we get here? Easy, the answer is the feminist movement. This movement has caused women to lose their real identity and sense of what a woman should be. Women were not meant to be like men, neither are they inferior, but are graciously different. They think differently, more emotional than physical, and compassionate by nature than men. Women have God given characteristics that make them women and never men. Just as men have characteristics that make them men, and not women.

For thousands of years, women that feared and reverenced God cut the picture of the virtuous and noble woman described in Proverbs 31.

These women knew this poem and taught it to their families. It was traditionally recited in the Jewish home every week on the eve of the Sabbath. Both the boys and girls knew this poem very well.

When we look at the woman described in Proverbs 31, we do not find a housewife rattled by the daily demands of being women nor do we find an over-achiever who has become hardened and one that leaves the family to fend for them.

Instead we find a caring, strong, elegant, dignified, multi-talented individual in her own right. This woman has investments, she has servants to keep busy and she also has real estate to manage. This woman is a partner to her husband and he trusts her completely with their goods, lands and property. She is his help-mate not his slave, his wife and the mother of his children and she knows who she is and understands what it means to be woman, wife, mother and citizen.

This woman has business skills, is charitable and kind. This woman energetically takes on new challenges and gains the respect of both her husband and her children. First and foremost, she looks to God’s will and not her own for her life and understands how only He can truly fulfill her needs.

I would now like to take you through each trait that this woman with noble character has, as shown to us in Proverbs 31. “This woman” is an ideal example of a woman.

Proverbs 31:10-31 (Translation from the Jewish publication society bible)

Pro 31:10 - A woman of velour who can find? For her price is far above rubies. The Hebrew word chayil, translated here "noble," or "virtuous" (KJV), means a wife of valor — a strong, capable woman with strong convictions

Pro 31:11 - The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, and he hath no lack of gain. Her husband trusts her to manage the family resources. She is industrious and adds to the family income.

Pro 31:12 - She doeth him good and not evil all the days of her life.

She is steady. She is both reliable and dependable. It does not depend on how she is treated by others.

Pro 31:13 - She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

This woman enjoys working and plans ahead for what she needs in order to meet her responsibilities to her family.

Pro 31:14 - She is like the merchant-ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

This woman will not settle for the mediocre she goes the extra mile for quality and looks until she finds it and gets it for the best price.

Pro 31:15 - She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth food to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She understands good managers have a responsibility to take care of those under their authority. She leads by example.

Pro 31:16 - She considereth a field, and buyeth it; with the fruit of her hands, she planteth a vineyard. Her goals are not short term — she envisions the long-range benefits of her decisions she is not fickle nor dose she act on a whim. She thinks things through before making a decision.

Pro 31:17 - She girdeth her loins with strength, and maketh strong her arms.

She is healthy and strong by proper health practices and good diet, adequate rest and exercise.

Pro 31:18 - She perceiveth that her merchandise is good; her lamp goeth not out by night. She is self-confident and takes pride in doing a good job. Her family needs not to worry for her responsibilities are taken care of she has her priorities in order.

Pro 31:19 - She layeth her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.

She develops her talents and hones her skills through education and diligent application. She really enjoys growing and learning new things.

Pro 31:20 - She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She not only donates to the needy this means far more. This woman shows personal concerns. She visits the sick, and lonely folks she takes food to those in need.

Pro 31:21 - She is not afraid of the snow for her household; for all her household are clothed with scarlet. Providing clothing for her family is her responsibilities. She takes this seriously, and plans. She knows before the time comes when she is going to be needing shoes for the kids, winter clothes so she starts looking before hand. This gal plans ahead.

Pro 31:22 - She maketh for herself coverlets; her clothing is fine linen and purple.

This woman has high standards and dresses properly for the occasion. She does not need to show off. Her clothing does not need to draw attention from others. She knows it is not so much how she looks on the outside but on in side that truly counts.

Pro 31:23 - Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. His husband does not worry about what was going on at home because his wife takes care of the affairs there; his success was as much from her and their success came from the support of each other. She makes many of the day-to-day decisions concerning their property and goods. Her husband trusts her to manage their estate well.

Pro 31:24 - She maketh linen garments and selleth them; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. This woman has a business at her home. However, her efforts she adds to the family income. It is not about me it is about us.

Pro 31:25 - Strength and dignity are her clothing; and she laugheth at the time to come. This woman understands the benefits of being wise and diligent; she knows it holds lifetime benefits and rewards for her.

Pro 31:26 - She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and the law of kindness is on her tongue. She is well read and knows the facts. She can discuss anything. She is able to express herself intelligently, tactfully and diplomatically. Folks like to come to her for advice.

Pro 31:27 - She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. She is an organized, energetic person she gets things done.

Pro 31:28 - Her children rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. She is not a doormat; she works hard to please her family. Her children honor her at home. Here we see the character of her husband as well. He teaches their children to respect mom and her virtues.

Pro 31:29 - Many daughters have done valiantly, but thou excellest them all.

This woman earns high praises for being extraordinary and a great role model.

Pro 31:30 - Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Here we see the key to what makes this woman effective. Her priorities are determined by God’s will, not her own. Her real concerns are what God thinks, other than what others may think. Physical beauty and clever conversation are admirable qualities. This woman does not depend on outward beauty and charm for her success. She recognizes and understands completely her need for God.

Pro 31:31 - Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her works praise her in the gates. This woman is active; she works the walk and does not just give lip service. She does not have to boast about what her plans are for the future or her successes of the past. They are obvious.

No one woman has all these wonderful qualities of a Godly and virtuous woman as described here. Nevertheless, each one of us as a woman can look to her as our role model and permit God to shape and mold us into her likeness.

My intention here is not to make us feel bad about ourselves, but to shed light on what I believe women are suppose to be. My opinion is however, not based on man's standards, but upon God's standards according to His word. It is my heart desire to do what God says and to be at least, a shadow of this woman we see as a true woman of virtue. I wish this should be the desire of every fellow woman too!

I give Geketa credit for writing very eloquently and for writing about her beliefs. I too believe much of what it written here, however I think that we do have many women still like this today.

Hollywood and models are only a very small part of what makes up the whole female world.

It is obvious that Geketa holds herself to a high standard and tries to live the way that God has commanded, and for that I commend her. I also share in the believe that it is a good practice not to judge others because we are not to be no one's judge...that is a job left to a higher power, but stive in our individual ways for these qualities.

A very well written article and one filled with lots of information about how God intended women to be. Geketa backs up her words with scriptural verses from the Torah, I believe, which shows that she knows her scriptures quite well.

Very nicely done Geketa, it was a pleasure to read.

This week has been declared the week of virtue, or how else can we rate Geketa's challenging article on the making of a virtuous woman. Every man would love to have the Proverb 31 woman as a life partner and I know what pride this can add to a family.

Geketa, with an articulate disposition, and herself striving hard to maintain some moral values and other area of godliness has thrown a huge but dignifying quest to all woman of standing to work and show themselves worthy of chastity and moral excellence. It is a clarion call!!

A new nice introduced article of virtue! Thomas I am with you in all you say about Geketa. It is good that Sam have chosen a man give his thoughts about a woman who writes about woman’s role in our society! I also agree with Marilyn that Geketa gave this article a religious portrait and the whole article is based on her faith.

There is not much more to write about a woman’s role. Geketa this is one of the best articles I read so far about woman’s life, history and her development and place in our modern world.

In a world dominated by values man chooses there are still many things that must change to favour a woman. Still there are unfair treatments. Being a woman means difficulties to find work, to make career, etc. Lately the sarca business blooms and there is nothing happen to stop sex, porno and drug business which is one of the biggest human problems destroying or life and family relations and tradition.
The feminist movement gave ideas to make steps forward but many times it turned to be an extreme organization to harm woman trying to give her an anti-man role which makes things worse.

I believe than man and woman goes hand in hand. Our world is not a garden of angels and we still fight for freedom, peace and many times for independence.

I a world where the rich man controls the sources of living man and woman must together fight for a better tomorrow and w better future for our children.
In the pyramid of power woman stays as lowest but many men share same place. We must all contribute to better our word by developing or society and stay close to what we call family.
Everything and all good values start from our home. We are the society and we are those who can make it better communities. Others joined in some opportunities which didn't go the way they wanted and they are disappointed.

A reason may be that there are too many unknown people out there without “special interests” and they all send their messages to join them in their ventures. I can really see that most of them don't care about being friends. They want you just to join them and get you involved in their business.

Yes my article is based on faith my faith is an outward manifestation of my inward person. I also believe that God intended man and woman to walk side by side not that she should be lessor but equal his intention was for her to be his help mate not his slave.

In our modern world today I believe both men and women have lost sight of who they are and what they are in the roles of being a man an a woman. This is in my opinion due to the lack of morals and values being taught in the home. Yes, there are many parents that still do but watching the nightly news it makes you wonder.

I always enjoy reading your views you cut straight to the heart of an issue as you see it. Thank you for reading and your comments.

Your article is very thought provoking. My hope is that many woman will do some soul searching after reading it. I personally had to do much soul searching many years ago before I stated to understand the difference in the way we as women where suppose to be according to God's view of us instead of what we had become . Remember I grew up during the whole women's lib error :)

Dear Geketa Holman,

In just a few minutes reading though this article, one could estimate the kind of woman you perceive and identify with. While Brother Thomas added an emotional and religious inspiration to your article, I agree with Marilyn Hollywood comments . For Sam, I have nothing new to add, just thankful to you for this great forum.

I had never really took time to read these portions of the bible you have described so well, on the true biblical values of women. I am thankful you took time to educate us about it.

When we grew as children , we knew that our mothers carried the symbol of value , hard word and patience. A child would run to the mother when the father got nuts . Generally a mother would only get angry if you did something really wrong. Most times they even took the blame for your abstinence.

Its important to note that in our culture, particularly during the period of slave Trade when most of the young men were taken from their countries to America and Europe, thus creating a big gap for development, those that were left to deal with the plantations and farms were mostly women. In fact they outnumbered the male population three times in most communities.

In west Africa particularly in Ghana, women had to take over most of these plantations and farms and became the managers and developers for their communities. In fact they simply took over the role of men in their communities. This gave a different role to women and we can still see the effects of this today in most local communities in these regions. In Ghana most women marry the men. Good place for women to be?

In Central Africa, it was a little different, because women were very devoted and loved or adored their men so much that they could give their life's for them. The absence of young men to marry them led to polygamy in these regions. Women lived in multiple house holds based on the opportunity and gain they could achieve through a marriage. Love was not a major factor for marriage at that time. The desire for growth and development sponsored cross marriages , wars for land and property. The more women you had , the more farms one could develop.

The Muslim religion also had the back side of women independence and rights. After so many wars, where most men were killed , to maintain purity in the society men were encouraged to marry more that one wife . These laws were enacted may years ago to protect women and not to abandon them nor to let them in disarray.

The quality therefore of these women have developed in most cases to self made and potential team brokers, as we see in Europe and the USA. Even though most of these countries are being criticized , for their religious and administrative laws related to women, there are some good and odd advantages to this. Today women in many third world countries breath an air of freedom , a desire for independence and have greater perspectives .

Religion as divers at we all know had great impact on women in the third word. Its however, not proper to go into details on how women with great faith tackled the uproar and humiliation. What we all most desire, is that a womans place in our society must be respected.

Generally women are more honest, subtle, and goal getters in any service and opportunity placed in their hands. They can also be great philosophers.

Women express that portion of Love which reminds us more of our Heavenly father. They are the embodiments of Love itself. A woman would never hurt her child , neither another's. They are also very ideal for business partnerships.

Religion should not be the only basis of measuring a good and honest women. Most hide behind it then become tigers when in a marriage. This leads to a potential divorce.

In conclusion a fragile woman is generally one without faith, purpose and clear objectives. First of all the world wouldn´t be the same without women.

Dear Geketa,

learning is an ideal way to grow and we as children of Christ demand just that. A priest would pray to pardon ones sins, but forgiveness never comes until we abandon those sinful attitudes. Angels are virtually described like birds in the ancient graphics and designs, meanwhile Angels should be referred as Spiritual manifestation of the 'Sweet small voice', the blessings they bring to humanity. A womans place belongs to that harmony which is full of lovely ideas . A life well spent is union between two , in an atmosphere of honesty and truth. Hello Pierre,

Thank you for taking the time to read my article. I Did not know much about women in West Africa and Central Africa and how they are viewed forgive my ignorance. However I do know that woman here in the US seem to have lost sight of their identities in my opinion much of this is from the women's lib movement.

In societies that I have studied much of the time women are viewed as objects or possessions. I learned from a friend of my step fathers that he could buy a wife for as little as one hundred dollars and could keep her for one year and if he was not satisfied he was able to bring her back to the father after that year. This was in New Guinea. I was applaud at such a notion.

Many cultures and religions view having more than one wife as an acceptable practice. My question here would be how can any man love and care for his wives if he had more than one ? Building a viable relationship with more than one wife would be difficult and than the others aspects of things like jealousy, envy and strife would come into the human side of such a relationship. Just my opinion. I find it unacceptable to me personally.

Our heavenly Father created women to be women and they are different unique and special by his design.

Geketa, loved your article. It encompasses all that a woman should be and so many are. In my humble opinion the "woman" described in Proverbs 31 shows that there is no need for woman's lib or the feminist movement because in a realistic sense the woman described has it all. Equality, love, respect, dependency (of others upon her) and so much more.

This is a true partnership of equals among equals and those that try to encompass these attributes will not only be fulfilled but looked up to by all.

I want to thank you for your love you share and with scriptures of how a woman is viewed through the eyes of God, my views is that rabbi Jesus was the greatest liberator of woman the wold has ever seen. In a day and time in which woman were commonly regarded as inferior or as mere possessions to be owned, used and discarded, he treated all woman in his life with respect and dignity. I believe that Christian woman have the same mission as men- to change the world by making disciples of Christ. While Scripture instructs us not to put woman in positions of authority over men (1 Timothy 2:12), they are to serve beside men in the work of the gospel (Romans 16:1-16), as well as functioning as powerful leaders of other woman ( Titus 2:3-4). While some of their roles may be different from men, woman are viewed by God as equals to their male counterparts ( Galatians 3:28). church captured it in a song that reminded them that they, too,must walk that same road (Philippians 2:5-11). We are a heaven-bound people, but we can be sure that we will encounter potholes and bumps along the road and even steep hills to climb as Satan tries to derail and defeat us. Our Savior, however, has already walked this road, and he is our great reminder that the path leads us to share in his glory, too. :)

I would like to expound on something I have been thinking about in regards to what a women with virtue is all about .

Going up in the 60's many of us.. rejected the morals and values our parents held and tried to teach. They were viewed by many young adults as old fashion an out of date.

With that came the sexual revolution, during that period marriage was for what was referred to as ,"straights", of course many still married but it became acceptable to just live together and even have children.

The foundation of the family was under attack most anything went, what had been morally taboo was now socially acceptable. These I feel are many of societies woes of today. I refer to this as the error when ,"America lost it's blush", we lost our innocence. During the 80's the aids virus arrived this I feelwas a direct result of promiscuity.

We started promoting safe sex instead of abstinence when in fact abstinence is the very foundation of teaching morals and values to our children.

Ok I have rambled on long enough :)

I first would like to thank you Sami for the opportunity of reviewing Geketa's article. It was a very well written article and one that was very interesting as well. I really enjoyed reading the article and giving my review.

Being a woman that is from a very old-fashioned upbringing, and a woman that is not into women's lib, I could relate to the article alot. I also believe that God that very specific roles for women and specific roles for men...we are indeed quite different. However, even though we are different we were created to be as one, women were created from the rib of Adam, which means we are to be by the man's side and working together side-by-side.

We are created equal, but men are to be the head of the household. This is exactly how I was raised and I how I believe things should be. My mother and father worked together, yet when it came to who was the head of the household and who was responsible to make sure everything in the home was right, that was the job of my father (the man).

You can even find these same teachings in the military. When a military man is married with a family he is held responsible for everything that goes on within his home and with everyone in it. If anyone does something wrong the military man is responsible and can even get reprimanded for it.

The Christians believe that Eve was responsible for picking the apple from the tree and eating it, however the Muslims believe the opposite. In Islam Adam was responsible because it is the man's job to make sure everything in the home is right and done according to God's word. I also believe this way of thinking. As I said, I am very old-fashioned, and I also think that many things were much better years ago when people had many of these same values and morals. Unfortunately, many of the values and morals people use to have, especially here in the United States, have gone out the window, and that is a very sad thing to see.

I totally disagree with the way women especially dress, there is no decency or modesty anymore. They want to expose as much of their body as possible and do it in public for all to see. People say alot about Muslim women because they are all covered...it is a thought of many that men are trying to hide their women. That is not true. God says we are to be modest and covered, and in fact, women in this country use to dress very conservatively and wear hats or scarves to cover their head. At one point in time here women would never think of going out of the home without having their head covered. The reason for that is the values and beliefs we use to have here...women were to be covered out of respect for herself as well as her husband once married.

Anyway, women and men are definitely created much different and each have their jobs to do, yet they are still created equal according to God's word.

Thanks for a very thought provoking article Geketa, and I wish many people, especially women, would read this and perhaps change their way of thinking somewhat!

Yes, I agree women are equals with men in God's eyes however it is the man that is responsible to God for his wife and family in other words he will be the one standing in judgement for the things that were done both correctly and wrong. This is why he should be the head of the household and have the final say on decision but the woman should always be allowed her voice on the matters.
