Hello everyone,

A very happy and friendly week to you all. I feel really honored to introduce a very dear friend and ardent member of our forum and her interesting work which we are featuring today as our latest Article of Virtue.

Leslye Miller is a strong believer of possibility once hard work is put to task in our daily endeavor and she has demonstrated this severally, in her personal dealings.

Leslye is putting us to a self searching undertaking on what we usually have in mind when we start building our network friends' list! Do we do this on the basis of true and supportive friendship or just selfish business interest?

You've got to agree with Leslye that we can aid in writng the tomorrow's success story of our indigent next door neighbors by lending a helping hand, no matter how small! I'll leave the rest to your judgement.

BE A FRIEND NOT A STRANGER

Internet marketers are busy today building their “lists”. Even in our ALP here, I find friends’ team with more than 6000 people in their groups. Now the big question; What is the true purpose of building this large group of friends?

In my opinion, I think some are for some selfish business links. Many do not get to know who these friends really are. Why approach someone that has no idea who you are as a person? This is the unusual basic case of networking, not necessarily to know each other and interact and be of help to one another but one of always getting from the other. So, how far would you go to help a friend in your list or one by your immediate neighborhood? Who is willing to help many others, possible millions of others?

I find some friends totally unwilling when you asked for their help while starting, but when you make it successful in life they’ll turn around to preach that “you don’t forget about your friends” I have heard this statement so many times in my life, whereas in reality most friends are left behind struggling when we could have lent a helping hand.

Dear folks many times your thoughts and impression about the next person may be totally wrong. It is wise getting to know him/her before making your conclusions, whether in the online community or offline community. I would think, most of you would give the shirt off your back or your last dollar, but only to those you know well. What about the ones you don’t know at all but is in your friends’ list or just lingering around your community looking for your help? Do they count as well? For Christ sake! A friend would think, “I am just as innocent as the one you gave last”

My point is, if you find someone genuinely in need of help to move forward in a career or online business; do not ignore such persons, because chances are you will never know the outcomes until it’s done. It is what I call “a dream that truly do come true at the end” If you continue to expect but ignore friends in need because you do not know them, don’t expect them to help you when they eventually get there. Great and successful people are wise thinkers who are ever ready to give out to others and to Charities.

Let’s ask ourselves, how many people we know around us that can start or invent projects or products? Chances are most likely 1 in less than every 100 people do know a close friend or family member as an inventor or talented person. Now what help do we render to these indigent ones ? I have always and will always believe that when you help a talented person, they will return back to thank or even help you. Look around, listen, read and observe, don’t take my word for it but I am sure this is true!

I am a person that believes in this principle of success:

I say “Let’s Be friends, and never Strangers.

Be faithful and dependable, a hot morning shower, a fresh cup of coffee, and the lights in your kitchen and bathroom. What would you do if you were deprived of the basics of your dependable morning routine? Many of us would start shutting down. It's easy to take hot water and electricity for granted. The same is true of faithful love and true friendship. I also wish to remind the receiver (the one in need), it’s easy to take for granted the person who is there to listen to your problems or lend a helping. It is also easy to take for granted the person you run to when you're frustrated or in trouble just like it's even easier to take for granted God's faithful care for you, your family and friends; you too must be dependable, appreciative and ever ready to work hard to justify the other person’s sacrifice for you.

This is the type of faithful and dependable friendship that is the foundation of every strong relationship and progressive friendship. Friendship is cheap if it's given only when things are going rosy and fine or if it is only one sided. Our love and friendship for others must be consistent, dependable and total. Let’s build a true friendship list and not only one sided business partnership list. Let’s be helpful to everyone in need whether online or offline. But most importantly, let’s not forget where the first assistance came from! Does this remind you of someone you leaned on before you climbed to your present zenith and thereafter dumped and forgot the friend? Here’s your golden day of reminder, time to go back and say the big “Thank YOU” And how about the poor but talented friend in your next door or neighborhood? Stand up to your responsibility! Yes, we owe each other the godly hand of Help. Do it now!!

Hello Sam,

Once again you have brought us a wonderful forum and introduced us to a very interesting and unique person. I read with interest Leslye's article and agree and disagree with her points of view.

While I agree, that we all should be interested in creating friendships. I have found that friends do not necessarily make good business relationships.

Friends tend to become detrimental to growing a thriving business. Because usually they measure your ability to become successful in a business by their own success or lack of the same.

Many may disagree but must be truthful with themselves.

Most organizations suggest that you build a warm market list of friends and family and don't stop till you have a list of a 100 or more. Then they tell you to begin contacting them and share your excitement about your new business. In most cases this is a BIG MISTAKE and almost assuredly will cost you friendships, if they do get involved and fail to succeed.

Because friends are either concerned that you are being lead down a primrose path, geared to separate you from your hard earned money. They tend to know your personal and financial circumstances and wish to protect you from the so called sharks. Many will expect you to carry them because you are friends and this has ruined many a matrix.

Then when you have worked your way through this list with less than glowing results. You are told "Well its a numbers game and some will, some won't, so what."

Unfortunately when most folks find that their friends aren't interested in their business, it is hard for them to get over that negativity and failure to energize their friends and grow their businesses. Most often resulting in that person giving up. Only the most tenuous of us will move forward from this point.

Building lists online, in Social Networks and through Online Advertising we begin building relationships to build and grow our businesses and our incomes. By growing relationships with like minded individuals that often times do become very good friends. Personally I have many friends that I have never met in person, but that friendship grew because of being online. True friendships take a long time to develop and are well worth the effort.

But let's be totally honest with ourselves and the folks here at AdlandPro. Most of us did not come here looking for friends, friends in need or long lasting friendship relations. We came looking for Business Relationships and Growing Our Own Incomes. Be honest and admit it!

We came looking to build business relationships and to expose our businesses to a community of individuals that have come here to grow their online presence and showcase their business interests.

Granted that during this process we find ourselves becoming friends with many folks we may never have developed a friendship with had it not been for the communication that happens in these forums and the conversations we have because of our presence here.

By growing "my friends list" and growing a relationship with that list of friends then my business should grow as well, hopefully.

Online the Money is In the LISTS and in Social Networks that list is called a Friends List. However we must realize this has different meaning online.

Confusing that meaning usually does not bode well for your business.

Congratulations on your feature here Leslye, and kudos for being brave enough to put yourself out there. I am sure you will build friendships as you also build your business relationships.

This article is the purpose, of stopping dishonesty, we must be here for friends first far before our business can grow healthy and successful. Right!

Most important it is to stop the unthinkable negative thoughts of putting business before the friendship, which is like partnership no different, maybe there would not be many disrupted friendships, if we learn organizational behaviors. What is a buisness without it?

And it is always possible to change the way network marketing is viewed, if one is willing to learn organizational behaviors.

It is also always important to know everyone on your list as a friend FIRST, to help them learn by teaching them the pros and cons, that is what make any business strive to excel.

I stand by my previous statements. It is nice to be naive but sooner or later the cold hard facts sets in and you realize that friendships and business relations are two separate things in a democratic, capitalistic society. Seldom do relations built on friendships turn into real business success.

If you know anything about real business, try researching real companies, like IKEA, MICROSOFT, GOOGLE to name a few. These companies have and always will understand the philosophy of friendships within their organizational behavior, which is the main cause of their business succeeding in the first place. We all know how Bill Gates, began his company with stolen ideas and technology. Just ask Steve Jobs of Apple.

Google did start as a couple of friends in a garage. But to become the powerhouse they are, they had to develop real business philosophies , capitalistic tendacies and bring aboard folks with Real World Business experience.

I am unfamilliar with IKEA, but I am sure they had to divest themselves of some of their starry eyed expectations to be true successes.

I appreciate Peter's directive of letting the situation cools by ceasing to post in this present thread until further, but I'll rather prefer my last wish: cease from addressing the controversy between you and Leslye but please don't cease from adding your voice on other matters!

Like already expressed, I do not accept that friendship should be seperated from business. In as much as I must say that I am not a good businessman but I have been involved indirectly in several business issues and I think what should rather be seperated from business is relations and not friends. Having said this, there is need to identify the type and scope of friendship that should be married to business.
In most business journals and articles I have seen, one item that is always encouraged in business is trust. And I ask you, can you get trust from a stranger? It is because of our inability to trust everyone which, of course is not logical, that most business organizations demand for colaterals or some type of commitment in different forms before you can have any reasonable dealings. If real friendship is established where truth and trust is grounded, business relationship is assured.
Here's an ugly one from me:

You all know that this forum won the BFA 2007 with a cash reward of 1000USD. That I must confess is a lot of money in my own part of the world (120,000 Nigerian Naira) which I had strings of plans even for the forum. I thought the best and most convenient way to go about it was to open a PayPal account, of course this is one of the alternative Bugdan suggested for the payment. I knew from the start that my country Nigeria is not TRUSTED by Paypal and so is not accepted, but I had believed that if you have a relation you've visited outside Nigeria in a country accepted by Paypal you can use his/her address to open an account as long as you are not using your account for anything dubious. And so with that in mind, I used my frinds address in London whom I have visited a couple of times to open a paypal account where I asked Bugdan to pay in. No sooner had that money been paid than for Paypal to issue me a mail that they believe my account has been accessed by an unknown person and that I needed to send my UK bank credential before the account can be accessible to me. As I am writing, there is further threat of final closure and confiscation of my 1000USD. Here:
"In accordance with PayPal's User Agreement, your account access will remain limited until the issue has been resolved. Unfortunately, if access to your account remains limited for an extended period of time, it may result in further limitations or eventual account closure. We encourage you to log in to your PayPal account as soon as possible to help avoid this"

I am not writing to discredit paypal or aportion blames, I'll rather blame myself for not looking hard enough before I leaped, but this is what trust and friendship in business is all about. I am sure the stranger refered to here by Paypal is me who they observed through my Nigerian ISP configuration instead of UK. In other words, Paypal would only trust its friendly countries to do business with. So business is all about trust and trust cannot come without good knowledge of your business partner, this ammount to friendship.

Peter made a special point of not adding any faceless member to his list. I also try to do this, I believe I should rather have few trustworthy friends in my list that thousands of uninteresting 'friendless' friends.

I would like to address something very quickly if I may,

I am the Angel of Adlandpro.I hope I can help with some ruffled feathers here.

First I want to share a brief example of something.I came here to try to make something of myself theough being online.When I found adlandpro it was to my surprise that it was a place I could come and share my thoughts and ideas with others, then behold thru that I built great friendships and thru that friendship process I was able to offer whatever business venture I had. Now even thou I might want others to take my view point on things I had to then be able to except their view point good or bad.Its called respecting eachother good or bad.

It saddens me to see a amazing forum get into a pissing match instead. one thing I have always learned is the perception that people read into on another is really not what it appears to be at all. never ad fuel to a fire you see, what should have been done is just say thank you for your thoughts and opinions.

Now on Jims behalf, when I first saw and heard of him I myself read into something that I should not have done. So then I actually called him and found by speaking with him he is really one of the nicest men I have talked with.Jim is abit abrasive on line but he is the most sweetest men you will have the pleasure of talking to. let me use myself as an example now, alot of people do not like me because they feel intimidated by my strong power of networking and the fact that no one can stand up to me and win. But once those people call and talk to me they find that now we become great friends because the illusion or perception of online is really taken way out of context.So that is why it is very important dealing online to make that phone call to really get to know who your doing business with.

I hope this helps to explain aliitle. and I hope theres no hard feelings, everyone has there own style of doing things but most the time they find out that the person they dislike or think bad of really is someone they can enjoy having and building a relationship with.

I hope I was not out of line by entering this forum.

We need to help each other not tear down.

Thanks for your concern and for making some soothing expressions. I am happy to tell you that the issue is a friendly one and has been brought under control in the spirit of this thread.

As I have already mentioned, this forum was founded on the principle of good friendliness and this means a feeling of liking to one another and our readiness to respect and enjoy each other's company and opinion. Recently I read from Pauline Raina's forum on the need to or not to moderate community forum. I am strongly against it but do not outrightly condemn it. Inspirations of Samiplus is a free-expression forum and shall remain so for now.

Some minutes ago I visited BillDaddy's forum and met a very interesting and similar thread as Leslye's and it sure create the impression of what friendship is all about. It is titled I REALLY MISS ADLANDPRO, DON'T YOU?. Here's a piece of it:

"Yes, I really miss the Adlandpro that I used to know. I miss the days when friend invitations had your name at the top. I miss the days when my PM box was full of friendly messages that didn't contain any ads. I even miss the CRC. At least when we had the CRC people were talking about something other than the latest , once in a life time opportunity.

Is it just me or are others seeing this change too. I have made up my mind that from now on, every friend invitation that doesn't have my name on it or contains an ad I will decline and block the sender. If I get spam in my PM box I will block that sender as well. What good is it to have a huge friends list full of people who think your name is Dear Friend and that is meant to only sell you something. Hey, my name is Bill. Most of my friends call me Billdaddy. If you refer to me as your friend then at least call me by my name and not just " Dear Friend........" [PLEASE READ ON HERE]

What a can of worms! I was so enthralled with the posts, I couldn't help but read them all!

What happened to tolerance and respect? What happened to everybody's right to have an opinion and express it. Having a difference of opinion is healthy. Attacking one another isn't!

Please forgive me for being late to the forum. We have had a famiy death and things have been a bit hectic and now I am being further challenged with a bout of something that is giving me a fever.

Hi Leslye,

Well, I have just read through the forum a couple of times. It is much as I had hinted at in my review. There are many who will agree with you 100%, and others who will disagree. If nothing else it opens our eyes to the differences in the people we have on our "list of friends" both here and in other social communities. Friendships and relationships and acquaintances- oh my.

I have made some very close friends here at Adland. And, they are just that! Friendships with people who I have learned to trust and who trust me. These "friends" are those who I wonder and worry about, and check up on through PM's and email when I don't see or hear from one of them in a while. And even though that list of people grows on an ongoing basis, there are less than a handful of them with whom I have done business with. And, there are those with whom I have had some business dealings with and we are still friends as well.

Within my "circle of friends" there are others with whom I have relationships. They have their businesses and friends, and yet over the years, I have earned their respect and they have earned mine. They are faithful posters in forums, and always come to mine no matter how infrequently I post a new forum. They are caring individuals who through the test of time, are a part of this community, who contribute regulary, and who will always find my post in their forums.

There are others "on my list" who are acquaintances. I see them around from time to time. I run into them in forums on a less frequent basis.

I have over 1500 people on my list. You know, there are a bunch of people on that list who invited me or who I invited to be friends, and we haven't crossed paths since that time. That is reality- the real world.

So, like I said in my review, we are apt to see a huge amount of conversation, controversy and comraderie too on your topic. As our lists grow, it would be virtually impossible to keep up with every one and have personal friendships with each and every one. I have been blessed with many, and I cherish each and every one!!

My dear friend Leslye, I throughly enjoyed reading your article on friendship. I do have the very same thoughts about the ways that many people create their large circle of friends in various social network sites. I find that many people have an artificial definition of "friend" on the internet.

I like your philosophy about friendship very much. Even though, we just met here on Adland, I feel that we are kindred spirits in many ways.

First of all, thanks for taking your valuable time to explore such a vital topic with us here today.

Of course, volumes have been written on Relationship Marketing, whether in trying to define it, or in attempting to teach others how to build and foster strong long-lasting relationships.

You cut right to the heart of the matter and asked the most important question as to why most relationships scatter to the wind like shifting sands, rather than remaining anchored in concrete, thus forming a firm foundation for a lasting partnership or business enterprise.

"Many do not get to know who these friends really are. Why approach someone that has no idea who you are as a person? This is the usual basic case of networking, not necessarily to know each other and interact and be of help to one another but one of always getting from the other."

Anthony Robbins sums it up along similar lines...

“Some of the biggest challenges in relationships come from the fact that most people enter a relationship in order to get something: they're trying to find someone who's going to make them feel good. In reality, the only way a relationship will last is if you see your relationship as a place that you go to give, and not just a place that you go to take."

Over the years, I have been blessed to develop many strong business and personal relationships, most of which are still standing firm to this day. The best ones always start out as a budding friendship, which with time becomes a trusting friendship, and then gels into a lasting relationship. This is the reason why I continue to write business today, on the Children and Grandchildren of people who were among my first customers when I entered the Business back in 1970. Thank Heaven for Referrals.

Hello again Sam,

I had to drop back by and read some of the responses and I am amazed that folks confuse the friendship issue with a business relationship issue.

As Phil states "This is the reason why I continue to write business today, on the Children and Grandchildren of people who were among my first customers when I entered the Business back in 1970."

I find myself being a bit amused. I believe the reason Phil, receives referrals, and continues to write business from contacts he made years ago, is not because he is a great friend (which I know he is) but because he is good at his craft and his product performs well and fits a need.

Most successful salesman, tend to be likable people when they are in the process of making the sale. They have the ability to set the client at ease. Thus creating an atmosphere of friendship to make the sale, thus earning a commission.

I do not believe for one minute that when making the initial call and setting the appointment, that he was looking for a friend. He was looking to share his services and to earn a buck. Sometimes during this process you find people that you can build a friendship and a relationship with, but I have to believe his initial intentions are purely capitalistic at the onset.

It is obvious, you know the meaning of organizational behavior, if you have build a friendship first to gain business associates, as far referrals, what is it? If you did not have friends, who admires your friendship first?

Thank you for a new Article of Virtue. You made a superb choise. The subject is very interesting and this should be the article of articles for most of our 78.000 friends in this community. Judy gave a recital in her review and she give full credit to the article.

I know Leslye. We are not close friends but her posts in the forums are very interesting. She is honest and she gives correct information to her friends.

I agree with all what is written and I share her ideas. It is true that good friendship and word of honour makes better affairs, but absolute affairs are made when you separate friendship from business. The time changed old non written values of our daily life. We have to be careful working with money. Many people have been ruined.

Thank you Leslye! I believe you have hit the heart and nerve of many here at ALP! You are a wonderful inspiration.

Personally, I have more than 500 Friends. I am sorry to say there are but a handful, I "know" and it is a shame.

The recognition forums help, but sometimes its difficult to remember who is who unless you are already "Good Friends." Over time truer Friendships do develop with those you find a common ground with.

Congratulation of being featured here in the article of virtue forum.

I did enjoy your article and would like to toss out my own thoughts. When it comes to social networking sites, I believe the word friend is tossed around much too loosely.
Here is why as you pointed out a friend is someone you know, someone that you speak to often and know on a personal level and have a working relationship. The people on the list of thousands we do not have those kinds of relationships with and probably never will with each person on the list . Friendships take time and effort from each person. I think acquaitence would be a much better term for such a list.

I will also add I have made some real friendships online in social communities and from the lists of friends that I am sure will last for a lifetime. Each one of those friendships took time, energy and some work they did not come from just adding them to my list.

Judy, as usual your review cuts to the chase and I have to agree that many will disagree with what was presented here. Thanks for sponsoring the Article of Virtue.

Hi Leslye, first and foremost you show great courage in your presentation of Be A Friend And Not A Stranger. The issue is a bit confused cos we have to remember the initial reason ALL of us had for joining an online community. Basically it was in order to create a contact list and eventually relationships with like minded people in order to do business online. That is the fact and can't be ignored.

I consider myself fortunate that over a period time I was able to find true friends that I am in contact with almost on a daily basis that I can laugh with, turn to for advice, discuss problems and share my feelings with. This is real life just as in the "real world".

Consider the fact that both online and off one has a certain number of real friends and the rest fall in the category of acquaintances. That is what our friends list turns out to be a list of acquaintances that we have in order to present our businesses to. If as time goes by we are able to turn them into friends what a pleasure and added value that is.

One thing I found interesting in your principles of success. There is no mention of friends there at all.

I am a person that believes in this principle of success:

I find that helping my downline, friends etc. one of the principles of success. When I help them to succeed I am in truth also helping myself to succeed. So helping and being there for them has always been one of the principles I worked at and it has been to my advantage in doing so.

The enormous friends list some have are exaggerated to say the least especially when you consider that many here jump and invite faceless people with almost no profile info to be friends. A bit ridiculous in my opinion but once again that is one of the reasons for online communities. We have no statistics that show what their success rate is but all you have to do is check and see how they pounce on the new faceless signups everyday.

I don't see how it is confusing? Because online business should be treated the same as any other business period.

First, ALL have not joined for the same reason, the faceless profiles could there for many reason to say the least. Maybe, if you request a photo, you may receive.

Second you mention: One thing I found interesting in your principles of success. There is no mention of friends there at all. I don't see why it has to say it directly, because the statement clearly state goals, which fit perfect with the article. So, why friends can't be included in goals?

I'm not sure I should post here again cos it seems you don't take disagreeing with your views very well. But I am known for a few things. I know how to make friends and retain them. And i also like to air my views and opinions in a friendly and respectable manner even when disagreeing with the other person.

Yes, I agree online business is the same as offline. The confusion isn't from that precept. It's from the conclusions and way you arrive at them.

Many of us are always willing to lend a helping hand to friends in need but let me ask you this. You've been a member here since 10/2006, you have 534 friends, 1 forum and 181 posts during that period.

1. How many of them are your personal friends now???

2. 181 posts aren't all that much over that period so I guess you haven't been in contact with your friends through posts. Granted you possibly were in contact through the different messengers or PMd them.

3. I haven't seen any posts on friendship building in your forum or blog the majority were business opportunities and proposals.

Now this isn't criticism it's just stating the facts and stats as I see them. So it seems that you like ALL or shall I say 99.99% of the members joined to create business relationships. All you have to do is check the sig lines in the majority of the members posts (including your own) to see just that.

The faceless members are there for a reason. The majority of them aren't interested in creating relationships just blasting their ads all over adland. That is legitimate BTW, this is AD Land isn't it? Personally I prefer friends that have faces and profiles and and in most cases will not invite a faceless member to be friends.

Yes friends and relationship can be part of your goals but one that is dedicated to creating friendships and relationships doesn't leave it to get lost in their "goals" do they??

That said, I am a firm believer in friendship and helping others to the utmost of my ability. Always have been and always will be. It takes time and effort and I am fortunate to have very good friends both on and offline. My experience in business both on and offline have shown that only good will come from doing just that. But, on a personal level I will say that out of my 1000 + friends in Adland only a "handful" are good friends with many friends and the rest are acquaintances.
