The USA has 10 times the population of Canada.

The country of France is the size of the STATE of Texas.

Our smallest state, Rhode Island, has 1 million residents, most of them jammed into one area.

The little "state" of Delaware is viewed as a suburb of Philly, by Philadelphians.

Some larger cities have sprawled into suburbs in other states, such as Gary, Indiana is a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, and that suburbia also spreads to Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Our country is 3,000 miles wide. We're ALL proud to be Americans!

Some cities within the same states are totally different, while cities in nearby states are more similar. Hard to explain to Europeans, who's countries each have individual languages.

When Obama went to Europe and said what they wanted to hear, our country with all the 50 states and 1,000's of cities and 100,000,000's of people were not all happy with what he said. All of us with our same language in many different accents understood him perfectly, he wanted to impress Europe. Well, Europeans are not voting in our election. What was his point?

Created By: 5146

Re: Election Poll results from Care2 peeps Wed, Aug. 27th

We all play nice to the people we dont personally know.

After one speech after another demonizing and belittling Barack Obama, Republican presidential nominee John McCain sought tonight to convince voters that he has the vision and skills to change Washington -- not his Democratic rival.

"Let me just offer an advance warning to the old, big-spending, do-nothing, me-first, country-second crowd," McCain declared in his acceptance speech. "Change is coming."

Voters in every poll say they want change in the nation's capital, and even though McCain has been in Congress for 26 years, he highlighted his maverick reputation to argue tonight that he is the one who can bridge the partisan divide and reform Washington.

"When we tell you we're going to change Washington...you can count on it," McCain pledged.

His maverick reputation means he knows who he works for, he said: "I work for you."

McCain took the stage, reconstructed into more of a town hall format, after a video about his life, especially his military record. "John McCain, John McCain," delegates chanted, then "USA! USA!"

The Arizona senator paid tribute to his primary opponents and then President Bush, though he has distanced himself from him, saying that the president led the country through the "dark days" after Sept. 11.

"I won't let you down," he told his supporters, then reached out to undecided voters, saying he plans to earn their trust.

Then he told Obama: "We'll go at it for the next two months," citing big differences on policies but pledged, "you have my respect and my admiration."

"But let there be no doubt, my friends, we're going to win this election," McCain declared as delegates rose to their feet.

At least twice in the opening minutes, his speech was interrupted by protestors, who were shouted down with "USA" chants and removed by security.

McCain said he has a record of fighting corruption and reminded voters of his support for the troop surge in Iraq. "I don't mind a good fight," he said, but "what you fight for is the real test."

He named specific people who are struggling in the economy or who need help, and said, "They matter to me." One of them was Matthew Stanley, the New Hampshire soldier who died in Iraq and whose bracelet his mother gave McCain, who continues to wear it.

He criticized his own party for being changed by Washington and losing voters' trust, then vowed that the party of "Reagan and Lincoln" will "get back to basics".

He warned that Obama will raise taxes, increase government spending, close borders to trade, and enact a government-run healthcare system. After each assertion, the delegates booed.

(Obama would dispute the characterization of his positions, pointing out, for instance, that he wants to cut taxes for those making less than $250,000 a year, while letting President Bush's tax cuts lapse for those making more.)

McCain then launched into a laundry list of his proposals on education, energy independence, and national security, among other issues.

McCain then went into his strong suit -- defense and national security.

"We face many dangerous threats in this dangerous world," he said. "But I'm not afraid of them. I'm prepared for them. I know how the military works."

"I know how the world works, I know there's good and evil in it," he added.

He pledged to use all his knowledge and relationships with world leaders to build a stable peace.

"I hate war, it's terrible beyond imagination," McCain said.

McCain closed his speech with his pledge to serve his country. "I've been an imperfect servant of this country for many years. I've been a servant first, last, and always," he said.

He told in detail his 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war, which he said taught him the greatest lesson of his life -- that no one can stand alone forever, and to serve a cause greater than self.
"I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else's. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn’t my own man anymore. I was my country’s.”

Mocking Obama, he said he wasn't running for president because he feels anointed.

"My country saved me, my country saved me, I cannot forget it," McCain said. "And I will fight for her as long as I draw breath, so help me God."

Created By: tmobil8

Re: Elections 2008

WASHINGTON - Barack Obama's potential running mates ducked, dodged and semi-denied their way through a day of political intrigue Friday as the Democratic presidential contender readied a high-tech announcement of his pick for vice president.

"No, no, no, no, no, no, no, nooooo," Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius told reporters who asked for her latest thoughts on the months-long search.

Three days before Democrats open their convention in Denver, several officials said Rep. Chet Edwards, whose district includes President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, had made the roster of potential running mates. Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware and Evan Bayh of Indiana were also in the mix, as were Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Sebelius — and any unknown others Obama had managed to keep secret despite intense scrutiny.

Hillary Rodham Clinton's prospects remained unlikely. Senior aides said the Obama campaign had never requested financial or other records from her.

Officials said the Obama campaign had taken the trouble to print material bearing the names of several potential ticketmates — thereby minimizing the significance of a report that a printing company in Kansas was churning out signs bearing Bayh's name.

Obama told reporters on Thursday he had made his choice, and aides used the prospect of a text-message announcement to try and attract additional supporters by soliciting their cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

Even that became occasion for intrigue.

Late Friday, several officials said the text message announcement would be distributed Saturday morning, a few hours before a scheduled rally at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill., where the Democratic ticket would appear for the first time.

Hundreds of miles to the west, carpenters, electricians, sound stage gurus and others transformed the Pepsi Center in Denver into a made-for-television convention venue.

Tucked away in one corner were thousands of lightweight rolled cardboard tubes, ready-made handles for signs bearing the names of the Democratic ticket — once the identity of Obama's running mate was known.

Edwards, whom Speaker Nancy Pelosi had touted for running mate, told The Associated Press in Waco, Texas, "I have had interactions with the Obama campaign over the last several months but I will not get into details."

Kaine, a moderate governor from a swing state, boarded a private plane at a small airport for a flight that aides said would take him to suburban Denver.

Bayh, a second-term senator, attended tennis camp with one of his sons, while Biden, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, evidently spent the day at his home in Delaware.

"My answer to any question about the subject that I think you're referring to is that all inquiries should be directed at Senator Obama's campaign," said Clinton, the former first lady who came close to capturing the nomination in the primaries of last winter and spring.

Despite the advice, neither Obama nor his aides were saying.

"Obviously, the most important question is: Is this person ready to be president?" Obama told "The Early Show" on CBS. Second, he said, was: "Can this person help me govern? Are they going to be an effective partner in creating the kind of economic opportunity here at home and guiding us through some dangerous waters internationally?"

And, he added: "I want somebody who is going to be able to challenge my thinking and not simply be a 'yes person' when it comes to policymaking.

Among those believed in the running, Edwards, Biden and Bayh fit the mold of running mate with experience in defense or foreign policy — areas in which Obama is rated relatively poorly in the polls compared with Republican Sen. John McCain.

Clinton's credentials were forged in the primaries and caucuses where she ran a close second to Obama in the battle for the nomination. She maintains a loyal following among Democrats, many of whom have yet to swing behind the man who defeated her.

There was no shortage of other speculation, ranging from GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who traveled with Obama to Iraq and Afghanistan, to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, to Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut.

The emergence of Edwards as a possible selection was the surprise of the day.

Edwards is a favorite of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who praised his "extraordinary credentials" on ABC's "This Week" on Aug. 3 and said: "I hope he will be the nominee."

One Democratic official with knowledge of the conversation said Obama told Pelosi recently that she would be pleased with the choice. Other Democratic officials said he was on the short list. All spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss Obama's selection process.

Edwards, chairman of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, is a nine-term moderate Democrat representing the GOP-leaning Texas district. He is well-known in Texas but does not have a national profile.

Several GOP officials said Friday that Arizona Sen. McCain, Obama's Republican rival, had not settled on a running mate — nor offered the job to anyone — although former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty were under serious consideration. It's likely McCain will wait to see who Obama selects before picking his running mate.

Officials said the campaign also was preparing for an "unconventional" nominee, an indication that oft-mentioned former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, an abortion-rights supporter, or Connecticut Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman still could be in the running. That category also could include non-politicians whom McCain deeply admires, such as Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq.

Two officials close to Romney said he had not been offered the job. Pawlenty batted away questions Friday in a CNN interview, saying, "I'm sure he'll make a wonderful choice for our party and for our country, and we'll just have to wait until next Friday to find out the answer to those questions." Dated August 22 Friday.

Created By: tmobil8

Re: Elections 2008

Remember in these discussions, we have to all remember to respect each other's opinions. I don't think any of us here KNOW any of these candidates personally and therefore, we should assume all information to be hearsay. I consider all of you my friend no matter who wins the election. :)
******************************************

Hey, I've got to tell all of you that there are some good points being made. Keep talking, some sense is flowing!!!

One thing that I have learned following politics closely now for 25+ years is that you have to look at who is hiding things and who is out right open about everything. Are they a team player or a team captain? Do they have a life behind them that speaks of honor and sincerity? Are they a Go-Getter? Are they happy? Are they generous and caring of others? Do they show love in things that they do and say? Do they have some honorable associates?

Personally, I understand the point about claiming to be a Christian and then having things like your 17 year old daughter getting pregnant. Doesn't mean your not a Christian, it simply means that someone made a choice that didn't fit the claim. It happens! I thank God that Jesus made it possible to be forgiven for these kind of things, because I know I had my issues as a kid and even as an adult. NONE of us are perfect in any way or we would have been on that cross! Right brother Thomas? : )

I watched most of both conventions this year and both nominees spoke against the other, but I didn't really hear anything out of the norms of modern day politics. They don't agree with each other and well, they didn't before the election process began either. So what? One of these candidates has told his life's story over and over and many others repeat it over and over, the other doesn't want to talk about his. One is a Liberal and the other a maverick. One is a POW veteran, the other isn't a veteran at all. One has a lot of experience in many things involving service and one doesn't. I'm not putting anyone down or putting names on any of these facts. But, I think each of you reading this knows who is who, right?

I'm personally hoping for some major change in this country this next four years. Change that will free up my monies from the tax man so that I can invest a bit more in my family, my neighbors, my businesses and missions. Would be nice to see jobs start flourishing back in this country and to see a new wave of patriotism. Would definitely like to see some independence again. Some return to being a kind, loving and gentle society!

With that said, I really enjoyed this speech!!!

Part 1 of 4...((youtube id="iWbt9i2F7iE"))((/youtube))

Part 2 of 4...((youtube id="hQVYcJGQ94o"))((/youtube))

Part 3 of 4...((youtube id="VoHnz9EFRt8"))((/youtube))

Part 4 of 4...((youtube id="e-oTtBQXds0"))((/youtube))

The wonderful thing is that this person is not a mean person, just a bit spunky!

Thanks everyone for letting me get my 2bits in.

And what a commentary..........

*********************************************

Photo from Hawaii Reporter

She Shoots, She Scores
Is there still an enthusiasm gap?
By John H. Fund, 9/4/2008 8:44:09 AM

Twenty years after Ronald Reagan left office, Republicans who have long
missed him may have found a future Margaret Thatcher. If John McCain
wins, conservatives may find one of the most enduring accomplishments
of his term will have been what he did before it started: helping to
fill the Republican Party's future talent bench with such a fresh and
compelling figure.

Sarah Palin is a conviction politician, a naturally compelling speaker
and someone who can relate to her audience on very human terms. America
has just learned why Mrs. Palin enjoys the highest approval ratings of
any governor in America.

Liberal commentators glumly noted the thunderous applause in the
convention hall last night. But they could do precious little to
attack. Even Keith Olbermann, MSNBC's official attack dog, could muster
only this as commentary on Mrs. Palin's performance: "People who like
this sort of thing will find this ... the sort of thing they like."

Mrs. Palin accomplished several things last night. First, she
introduced herself and her story to the American people in a compelling
and warm manner, complete with effective pictures of her proud family.
Secondly, she praised John McCain's leadership, service to country and
independence in a way that made him come alive. Thirdly, she
effectively deflected the media and liberal criticism of her by saying
they really represented an attack on the small-town and suburban values
she grew up with. Lastly, she skewered Barack Obama with gusto but
without meanness. Her line about her job as a small-town mayor being
"sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual
responsibilities" brought the hall to its feet in a frenzy.

Some hard-bitten political observers I know were uncharacteristically
impressed with the Palin speech. Hal Stratton, a former Attorney
General of New Mexico, wrote to me as follows: "That's what we out west
call openin' a whole can of whip a— on your opponents."

Other observers were more restrained, but still impressed. "She passed
her first major test, and if the reaction of the crowd in the hall is
any indication, with flying colors," says Peter Brown, the deputy
director of the Quinnipiac Poll. "So much for the comparisons with Dan
Quayle, who couldn't have given that speech if his life depended on it.
Obviously, Sarah Palin probably went down better in Warren, Michigan
than she did in Washington, D.C. -- but that was the whole point of her
speech and her candidacy." Indeed, while Mrs. Palin certainly won't
swing any deeply blue states in John McCain's direction, she may have
an impact in swaying independent voters as well as boosting GOP turnout
in swing states such as Colorado, Nevada and Michigan.

One of the standard operating theories this Election Year is that
Barack Obama and the Democrats are much more energized, excited and
willing to work hard for victory in November.

After Sarah Palin's remarkably effective speech, I don't think any
pundits or politicians will be able to count on a decisive Democratic
enthusiasm edge. Sarah Palin electrified the hall, and from what I can
tell from my e-mail inbox that excitement is being replicated in living
rooms across the country.

John McCain, who served 22 years in the Navy, nearly six of them as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. So many people were puzzled by the line of attack chosen by retired Gen. Wesley Clark, a supporter of Barack Obama:

"I don't think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president," he said on CBS' Face the Nation program June 29.

That Sen. McCain once commanded the largest flying squadron in the Navy wasn't much of a qualification either, Gen. Clark said, because he didn't have that command in wartime.

Gen. Clark's larger point -- that being a war hero is an insufficient qualification to be president -- is reasonable enough, but was lost in his boorish dismissal of Sen. McCain's military service. And however inadequate Gen. Clark imagines Sen. McCain's commander in chief credentials to be, they're certainly superior to those of the candidate he's backing, as stunned host Bob Schieffer pointed out:

"I have to say, Barack Obama has not had any of those experiences (of major command in war) either, nor has he ridden in a fighter plane and gotten shot down," Mr. Schieffer said.

Gen. Clark's remark diverted media attention from Sen. Obama's speech on patriotism the next day. Sen. Obama first mildly disassociated himself from Gen. Clark's remarks, and then denied he was criticizing him. Gen. Clark repeated his criticism on other television shows the following day. This turned a one day story which reflects badly on Sen. Obama into a three day story which reflects badly on Sen. Obama.

Gen. Clark was the eighth prominent Democrat to criticize Sen. McCain's war record.

"McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit," Sen. Jay Rockefeller told the Charleston (W. Va) Gazette in April. "What happened when they get to the ground? He doesn't know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues."

Sen. McCain's background as the son and grandson of admirals creates a "dangerous" situation because he can only view the world through the prism of the military, Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin told the Des Moines Register in May.

"He has a hard time thinking beyond that," Sen. Harkin said. "Everything is looked at from his life experiences, from always having been in the military, and I think that can be pretty dangerous."

Sen. McCain's national security experience is "sadly limited" because he was a POW, Obama foreign policy adviser Rand Beers told a liberal group June 30.

"I think the notion that the members of the Senate who were in the ground forces or who were ashore in Vietnam have a very different view of Vietnam and the cost...than John McCain does because he was in isolation essentially for many of those years and did not experience the turmoil here," Mr. Beers said.

Also that day, Virginia Sen. Jim Webb said Sen. McCain shouldn't use his military record in politics. When he ran for the Senate two years ago, Sen. Webb cited his record as a Marine in Vietnam as his principal qualification for office. He stomped around the state wearing combat boots. And Gen. Clark, of course, cited his military experience as his principal qualification when he ran for president in 2004.

As Jim Geraghty of National Review Online noted, there are "way too many" of these attacks on Sen. McCain's war record to be a coincidence. But if it's a deliberate strategy by the Obama camp, it's an odd one, because there is no way a comparison between Sen. McCain's record on national security and his makes Sen. Obama look good.

What's important about Sen. McCain's experience as a POW is not what it taught him about conducting foreign policy, but what it teaches us about his character, wrote "Uncle Jimbo," a former Special Forces soldier, on the milblog "Blackfive."

"John McCain was so loyal to the men he was imprisoned with he endured torture on their behalf," Uncle Jimbo said. "Barack Obama associates with those who can help his career, and throws them right under the bus when they become inconvenient to his aspirations."

"In minimizing the import of McCain's military service, Clark instead opened the door to the sort of criticism that Obama, who painstakingly praises McCain's military record at virtually every event, cannot afford," wrote Jay Newton-Small of Time Magazine. An Opinion about Palin... I recognize that were McCain to select Palin as his Veep it disrupts the Obama Lacks Foreign Policy Experience" talking point, but I was never thought that argument was all that powerful. Palin probably has as much foreign affairs experience as did our current President when he was elected (and as much as Carter, Reagan, or Clinton — and as much as some of the other Veep prospects some conservatives promoted, e.g., Jindal). All this is just to say judgment is more important than experience — it just so happens that Obama lacks both. Many State Department hands have a wealth of relevant experience, but would promote awful foreign policies, and many folks with relatively limited experience do just fine. I Cant wait for the debate guys, its going to be very exciting and Enlightening!
THIS was made fresh today by the Rush Limbaugh staff...it's a pdf of a sign we can tape to our TV sets while watching Obama tonite.

http://download.premiereradio.net/guest/rushlimb/daily/TV_SignObama.pdf

Yes, I watch BOTH conventions, I've watched all 4 nights of the Dems and I'm getting excited about McCain next week, with Rudy Giuliana opening on Monday!

My parents would only watch the Democratic convention, I was raised by DEMOCRATS!!! Well, the parties have somewhat changed in 25 years so the new Dems are not the old Dems. I think it's a good idea for everyone to watch BOTH conventions.

My mother-in-law says she's voting for Obama, she rarely watches John McCain's appearances on TV. If people don't know BOTH candidates, how can they make a real choice?

My mother-in-law thinks the Democrats are for the people, and more for women, but in reality, my mother-in-law has lived her life like a Republican, trying hard, working hard, she didnt finish school where she grew up in Indonesia, they moved here and LEARNED ENGLISH ON THEIR OWN and she and my father-in-law GOT JOBS and RAISED A FAMILY, both their kids GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL and GOT JOBS. Then those folks got a divorce, my mother-in-law started over with $8 in her pocket at age 40 in 1979 and GOT ANOTHER JOB and a PLACE TO LIVE on HER OWN. That's called being strong Americans, not depending on the government, not expecting handouts. They lived like Republicans, she should vote Republican.

Created By: 5146

Re: Elections 2008

Thomas,

Oh my Politics - can of worms!!! Seems we all have different opinions of who/what democrats and republicans are.

I'm a Democrat and proud of it. Just because I'm Democrat though, doesn't mean I should be steriotyped any more than a Republican .

Basics, Democrats are for the working man and Republicans are for the Businesses. These are the basics and boy do they change from there!!!

By the way, I don't trust Obama and I don't trust McCain either. Not sure what I'll do .

Great News for Kathy- Mc Cains running mate is a woman from Alaska.

<?xml:namespace prefix = rte ns = "urn:rte-search" /><rte:body>

US presidential candidate John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate.

Ms Palin, 44, was elected in 2006 as Alaska's first female governor. The mother of five built a reputation as a reformer in a state that recently has been hit with corruption scandals.

The surprise choice marks a huge political risk by John McCain, and a blatant bid to win over disgruntled Hillary Clinton supporters.

Ms Palin is also expected to appeal to the Republican's grassroots conservative base, as she is strongly pro-life and backs the gun lobby.

She is best known for aggressively pushing for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a key part of the McCain energy policy.

However picking such a long-shot candidate could undermine Mr McCain's accusations that Barack Obama that he lacks the experience to be commander in chief.

'She will be his partner in reforming Washington,' a senior McCain official told reporters.

By announcing his pick today, John McCain is hoping to divert attention from the Democratic convention in Denver, which concluded last night with a speech by Barack Obama.

The Democratic candidate opened a broad assault on Mr McCain, accusing him of following the policies of unpopular President George W Bush.

Mr McCain is preparing to accept his party's nomination for president at the Republican convention in St Paul, Minnesota, next week.

'This is a bold choice of a strong conservative who is a reformer and will be greeted by the delegates in St Paul with enthusiasm,' said Republican strategist Scott Reed.
</rte:body>

Created By: tmobil8

Re: Elections 2008

Yes, and now the Dems are saying she's too young and doesnt have enough experience. LOL! Obama says she was the mayor of a small town of 9,000 people. Well, thats a LOT more people than he's ever been in charge of...which is 0. Funny how the Obama camp refers to Palin as the mayor of a small town, and skips over the fact that she's now a governor! Obama has only put in 140 working days in the Senate, and Palin has been a governor 24 hours a day for almost 2 years. No contest! Obama has never been a city councilman or a mayor or a governor. Palin has been ALL of those!!!
Created By: 5146

Re: Elections 2008

Funny how the Dems are also now putting down Palin for going for a high powered job as VP when she has a Down Syndrome baby. Wasnt it the Dems who always encouraged women to go to work? Palin has a fantastic husband, he's perfectly capable of taking care of the baby. Why is it that when men have a high powered job that takes time away from their kids, no one makes a big deal about that?
Created By: 5146

Re: Elections 2008

Sarah Palin became a mayor at age 32, beating out a 3-term incumbent mayor from her same party. That's hard to do! A town of 9,000 is more people than Obama, Clinton or Biden has ever been responsible for!

She's been Governor of Alaska since December 2006, a state of 600,000 residents, and has an 80% approval rating! The people of Alaska say she's accomplished more in 20 months than her predecessor accomplished in 12 years. She was the youngest and first female governor of Alaska!

Alaska had one of the most, if not THE most corrupt governments of all the states before she became governor. She stood up to the corruption and many of those legislators have since left office in shame. In 20 months, she has vetoed more than 300 wasteful spending bills, stopping more waste than any other governor.

As McCain said when introducing her, "We need a government that STANDS UP FOR US...NOT STANDS IN OUR WAY!!!"

Sarah Palin has done a lot of traveling around that huge state, many of the towns are far apart, and she has put in more personal effort and has met more people face-to-face than the governors of most states.

Alaska is one of our most important energy-producing states and she knows a lot about energy resources. She's the ONLY governor or senator who has ever been to ANWAR, and can give the best information and advice about possible drilling there.

She outshines Obama AND Clinton and Biden. Senators just push papers around and sign a few things once in awhile, and don't even work every day, they show up when they feel like it. Governors are in charge of entire states and responsible for all the people in their state, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Mike Huckabee, the Governor of Arkansas, said a governor gets more experience in 1 month than a senator gets in numerous years. Governors are basically running their own small countries. Sarah Palin is more ready than any long-term senator.

John McCain is a senator, but he was also a Navy Commander during a war, in charge of the safety of many people, in charge of their planes and equipment. He's ready, and she's ready, they are BOTH more well-prepared to be President and VP than Obama and Biden, or Hillary Clinton.

Created By: 5146

Re: Elections 2008

Obama explains his choice ,(CBS) In his first reaction to the choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate, Sen. Barack Obama tells 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft that she is an "up-and-coming public servant." Of his own choice for running mate, the Democratic presidential nominee says Sen. Joseph Biden "can step in and become president."

Obama and Biden sat down with Kroft Friday night in Pittsburgh for an interview to be broadcast on 60 Minutes this Sunday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

"Let me tell you the reason I picked Joe Biden," Sen. Obama told Kroft. "Number one, he can step in and become president. And I don't think anybody has any doubt about that. Number two is that if I'm in the room making the kinds of tough decisions that the next president's going to have to make both on domestic policy and on international policy, then I want the counsel and advice of somebody who's not going to agree with me 100 percent of time - in fact, somebody what's independent enough that can push back and give me different perspectives and make sure that I'm catching any blind spots that I have. And Joe Biden doesn't bite his tongue.

"Number three, is somebody who I know in his heart cares about the American people and the American dream, and is willing to fight for them as hard as he can. And Joe Biden fit that bill," Obama added.

"What do you think of Senator McCain's vice presidential choice? And how does it change the dynamics of this campaign?" Kroft asked.

"Well, I don't know Governor Palin, I have not met her before. I had a brief conversation with her after she was selected to congratulate her and wish her luck - but, not too much luck! - on the campaign trial. And she seems to have a compelling life story. Obviously, she's a fine mother and a up-and-coming public servant," Obama said. "So, it's too early for me to gauge what kind of running mate she'll be.

"My sense is that she subscribes to John McCain's agenda. And ultimately, this [election] is going to be about where I want to take the country and where Joe Biden wants to take the country, and where John McCain and his running mate want to take the country." A review by a veteran;

McCain helped his campaign by picking another maverick and female who can stand up to anyone. Palin has as much experience as Obama on top of his ticket. Palin is a new inspiring pick the republicans need. She has 80 percent approval in Alaska and is the most popular Governor in America. She taxed oil companies and gave it all back to Alaska''s taxpayers at $1,200 each.

Obama is a smart inspiring speaker, but Palin''s actions speak louder than political words. She has fought corruption in both parties in Alaska. When she speaks she says it like it is, unlike polished career politicians. Some people can talk the talk, but Palin can walk the walk. Anyone with doubts about Palin should watch her interview with Maria Bartiromo on CNBC.

People are talking negatively about Palin without knowing all the facts about what she has achieved, including the media because they are in love with Obama. The media is saying McCain picked Palin because of Hillary not being picked and I love Hillary, but Sarah is the real deal for republicans and she gives them a new face that they need to reform their party. The republican party has always been for the rich and special interests, Sarah represents “we the people” and is against government waste and the good old boy network, this is just what republicans need to fix their image and party direction.

Now the race is exciting and change is coming to both parties! History will be made period with either Obama or McCain!

</SUB>
Created By: tmobil8

Re: Elections 2008

Republicans don't need to "fix their image"! The Republican party is solid, unlike the splintered Democratic party of this year that had almost a tie between Hillary and Obama, the DNC is run by that loony Howard Dean who's state of Vermont is one of the worst for child molesters running free, and also the Democratic Speaker of the House with San Francisco values, that daffy mouth-breather Nancy Pelosi who said 3 times within 1 speech that natural gas is NOT a fossil fuel, then said she only said it once by accident, DUH!!!

The Republican party was known as the party of the rich SEVERAL DECADES AGO, when the Democratic party was the party of the people, but both have changed a lot since then. There are plenty of rich Democrats, John Kerry for example, and John Edwards who owns a $6 million mansion across the street from a trailer park full of people whom he has NEVER gone out to meet! John Edwards girlfriend had expensive homes in NC and CA, and has recently been hiding out in St. Croix in the Carribean so she won't be bothered by the American media! Oh, those poor poor Democrats! Boo-hoo!!!

PAUL, Minn. (AP) — John McCain will try to reclaim his reformist image at a Republican National Convention tightly scripted to put some distance between the conservative presidential candidate and his party's unpopular standard-bearer, President Bush.

McCain lost to Bush in the 2000 GOP primaries but emerged from that campaign as one of the nation's most popular figures, with a reputation for bucking his party and the status quo. This year's campaign diluted that image as he backed Bush's position on the Iraq war and courted conservative leaders he once scorned.

He wants his mojo back.

In a pick that shocked the political community, McCain put little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on his ticket and declared she will "help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people."

"She's exactly who I need. She's exactly who this country needs to help me fight the same old Washington politics of 'Me first and country second,'" said McCain, who watched Obama steal his change-agent persona in 2007.

McCain, who served nearly six years in a Vietnam prisoner of war camp, also will try to persuade the public that he puts "Country First" above personal ambition. Essentially, GOP strategists say, McCain will suggest that Obama does the opposite.

They say he also hopes to benefit from voter wariness about Obama's liberal record, inexperience and race; the first-term Illinois senator would be the nation's first black president.

McCain's plans may be complicated by Mother Nature. Hurricane Gustav is bearing down on the Gulf Coast, a reminder of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Bush administration's poor response. The storm was clearly on McCain's mind Saturday.

"You know it just wouldn't be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster, so we're monitoring it from day to day and I'm saying a few prayers, too," McCain said in an interview taped for "Fox News Sunday."

Two months before Election Day, polls nationally and in key states show a tight race, and the convention is McCain's best, perhaps last, shot to set the campaign conversation by redefining the GOP as the party of reform.

The political environment is tailor made for the Democrats after eight years of Bush, with most people objecting to the country's direction and the president himself. And, McCain faces the difficult challenge of persuading people to allow the party in power to continue to rule the White House at a time of unpopular war and economic strife.

From the campaign's start, Democrats have embraced the mantel of change and have been relentless in pointing out where McCain is the same as Bush. Polls show their pitch has been successful, with more than half of the country saying McCain would continue the president's policies.

Voters either don't know McCain's record of breaking with the party on a range of issues like global warming and stem cell research, or they don't believe it given McCain's alliance with Bush on Iraq and other issues. McCain has reversed himself to back the president's tax cuts after twice voting against them.

Compounding McCain's troubles, Democrats last week at their Denver convention nominated a fresh-faced candidate who is the living embodiment of change. A national figure for just four years, Obama won the Democratic primaries by tapping into the public's dissatisfaction and offering himself as the cure.

In speech after speech, Democrats linked McCain to Bush. They said Bush and McCain are the twins in "Twin Cities."

In his acceptance address, Obama predicted that McCain would highlight his breaks with the GOP "as evidence that he can deliver the change that we need."

Then, he skewered McCain, saying: "The record's clear: John McCain has voted with George Bush 90 percent of the time. Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than 90 percent of the time? I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to take a 10 percent chance on change."

Some 12 hours after Obama's speech, McCain launched his counter argument that he's a different sort of Republican by choosing Palin, who shares with McCain conservative sensibilities and a willingness to buck the GOP in the name of what they say is doing what's right, not what's politically expedient.

McCain didn't mention the political calculations.

As the first woman to serve on a GOP presidential ticket, she could help him win over a constituency that has given him trouble and woo disaffected Democratic supporters of vanquished Obama primary opponent Hillary Rodham Clinton. Palin also is a rock-solid conservative and abortion opponent whose selection instantaneously revved up a disgruntled GOP base that must turn out in the fall to give McCain any hope of winning.

On the eve of the GOP convention, Democrats weren't about to let McCain cast himself as this election's change agent.

"This may be his running mate" says the ad, as it shows McCain and Palin together. It then shifts to a shot of McCain with Bush, and says, "America knows this is John McCain's agenda. And we can't afford four more years of the same."

As Democrats beat the "McCain-Bush" drum to counter the St. Paul convention, McCain and his roster of speakers will try to show that he's his own man with his own vision.

Not-so-typical Republicans like keynoter Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, got plumb speaking roles.

And, Bush's and Vice President Dick Cheney's appearances are limited to opening night as McCain looks to turn the page on the past administration and lay out his own course.

Created By: tmobil8

Re: Elections 2008

Created By: nicksym

Re: Elections 2008

Thanks Nick for that wonderful graphic..of a babys foot?? hehe.
Born in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936 while his father was stationed there, McCain has a family legacy that took him to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. After graduating in 1958, he became a Navy fighter pilot and volunteered to serve in Vietnam.

In what may be the defining event in his life, McCain was shot down while flying a combat mission over Vietnam in 1967. He was captured by the Communist Viet Cong and spent 5½ years in a prisoner of war camp, where he was often tortured.

Despite suffering pain from his crash and torture, McCain refused to be released before others who had been in captivity longer. He returned to the United States in 1973.

"During the years, we were kept in solitary confinement or two or three to a cell because they didn't want us to see each other. We'd spend all our time tapping on the walls to each other and encouraging each other and organizing, organizing, organizing with our chain of command. The days and hours go by," McCain told CNN's John King.

"But, you know, the camaraderie, the friendship, the love that we had for each other was still the most remarkable experience of my life. They're the ones I know best and love most."

McCain entered politics nearly a decade after his return, when he ran for and won an open House seat in Arizona in 1982. In 1986, McCain easily won Arizona's Senate seat and has been re-elected three times.

"In those earlier days, he was still a guy. He was that guy who came back from Vietnam, that guy who was having a good time in the Senate. He wasn't as polished as he is now, and his personality is intense," said E.J. Montini, a writer for the Arizona Republic. "He's not as confrontational in an interview situation as he may have been at another time. That has changed, but in those early days, he definitely was. It was very entertaining."McCain's early Senate career focused on an issue he knew well: Vietnam. He worked with fellow Vietnam veteran Sen. John Kerry, D-Massachusetts, to investigate whether POWs were still being held in Vietnam. They found none. McCain also pushed for a normalization of diplomatic relations with the country that had once held him captive.

McCain was also assigned to the Senate Commerce committee and would eventually become the committee's chairman.

In 1986, McCain was investigated as being one of five senators, dubbed the "Keating Five," who met with regulators on behalf of Charles Keating, the owner of an Arizona savings and loan. He was later cleared.

During his Senate career, McCain developed the reputation of being a maverick and bucking his party's leadership. On what could be considered McCain's signature issue, campaign finance reform, McCain worked with Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wisconsin, in 2002 to pass what may be his signature legislative accomplishment -- the McCain-Feingold campaign finance legislation -- over the objections of the Republican leadership.

In 2005, McCain again took a position counter to the majority of his party by working with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, to write immigration reform legislation, a measure conservatives dismissed as "amnesty" for illegal immigrants. McCain again tried to pass bipartisan immigration legislation in 2007, but the effort stalled in the Senate. McCain took his maverick reputation on the campaign trail in 2000, criss-crossing New Hampshire in his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus and answering voter questions. His candid responses made McCain a favorite of New Hampshire's independent votes and the media.

He went on to upset then-Texas Gov. George Bush, the candidate backed by the party establishment, in the New Hampshire primary, capturing 49 percent of the vote to Bush's 30 percent.

McCain's 2000 campaign ended quickly after New Hampshire, however. When the race moved on to South Carolina, social conservatives rallied around Bush and worked hard to defeat McCain. The South Carolina primary fight was particularly nasty, and rumors swirled that McCain had fathered a black illegitimate baby. (He and wife Cindy, in fact, had adopted a daughter from Bangladesh.) Bush went on to beat McCain 53 percent to 42 percent.

After South Carolina, McCain scored another upset in the 2000 Michigan primary, but he further alienated social conservatives, a key Republican voting bloc, when he blasted Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and other evangelical leaders as "agents of intolerance."

Bush captured the Republican nomination and the White House.

Bitter feelings between the McCain and Bush camps remained after the 2000 election, and McCain opposed Bush's tax cut proposal, arguing that it would increase the federal deficit.

But McCain became one of Bush's strongest backers in the war on terrorism, including the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. McCain campaigned for Bush's re-election in 2004.

After the Democrats took control of Congress with the 2006 elections, McCain became one of the most vocal critics of their plans to force the president to withdraw troops from Iraq. Although he was a fierce critic of then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the administration's war strategy, McCain claimed that a precipitous withdrawal would damage U.S. national security and argued that more, not fewer, troops should be sent to Iraq to increase security there.

Bush adopted the "surge" strategy in early 2007, and the increased troop levels largely succeeded in reducing violence across Iraq.

As McCain prepared to run again for president in 2006, he gave a speech at Falwell's Liberty University, a move read as an attempt to close any remaining rift with social conservatives. He also argued that Bush's tax cuts should be extended past 2011, a move seen as a way for McCain to improve his standing among the party's economic conservatives.

In spring 2007, McCain launched his presidential bid among a crowded field of candidates. The GOP candidates included former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who made national security his signature issue; former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a favorite of many in the party's conservative base; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher who struck a populist tone and enjoyed the support of evangelicals; and actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson, who many hoped could recreate Ronald Reagan's political magic.

As McCain began his second bid for the White House, he trailed Giuliani in the national polls and attempted to run a more traditional presidential campaign than his 2000 effort. His fundraising lagged, however, and in summer 2007 his campaign nearly went broke, forcing him to lay off much of his campaign staff. Many political observers wrote McCain off.

But McCain continued, reverting to the campaign style that worked for him in 2000: riding the "Straight Talk Express" and answering thousands of voter questions at town hall meetings.

Though Huckabee won the Iowa caucuses with strong support of evangelicals, McCain re-created the magic of 2000 and won the 2008 New Hampshire primary with 37 percent of the vote, edging out Romney. McCain lost to Romney in Michigan a week later, but he won South Carolina and then Florida, which knocked Giuliani out of the race.

On Super Tuesday, McCain won the large states of California, New York and Illinois, which effectively ended Romney's White House run. However, Huckabee did well in the South -- an indication to some that evangelicals were dissatisfied with McCain -- and stayed in the race until McCain won enough delegates to secure the nomination with wins in Texas and Ohio on March 4.

Dear concerned citizens of America and mass media of the U.S.A.

As a concerned disabled American Veteran and American citizen, I consider it my duty and responsibility to address the following critical issues facing the voters of our Greatgrand nation, the United States of America [USA].

The citizens of the United States of America [USA] have the ultimate power and responsibility to elect the Right Ticket with the right joint "temperament, judgment, and statesmanship" to lead our nation as well as change our nation's present and future moral, political, economic, educational, health care, energy, military, and foundational soul.

In my firm professional, personal, and political opinion, the media should help the common voter to explore and discuss the following attributes of the present Republican and Democratic presidential slates:

1. Does the joint ticket have a calm, cool, and collected " temper and impulse" [Presidential Temperament]?
2. Does each ticket have sound and sustained "Judgment and Caliber"?
3. Does each ticket have a "presidential depth and degree" in regard to their purpose, policies, and positions?
4. Does each ticket have adequate, "understanding and knowledge" of workings around Washington"?
5. Does each ticket have enough "vigor, wisdom and Vision" for the future of our beloved Great-grand Nation?
6. Does each ticket possess enough joint foreign policy experience and ex-poser based on "American Values, Virtues, Vastness, and strong soul"?
7. Are their campaign talk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels, unfair attacks, negativity, and impulsivity?

If your answer to a majority of the above questions is yes, I suggest you vote for that ticket. As a Independent registered voter I have decided to vote for Obama-Biden ticket. I am sure they will protect our national security, Strong's, stamina and strong soul. Rebuild our nation from bottom up in all areas of need, OBAMA-BIDEN ticket will once again restore and rebuild our global standing with the use of maximum international humane diplomacy and minimal force if and when indicated.

Both Senitors last night spoke from the heart and i admire that.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- First-term Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, catapulted onto the national political stage last week when Republican John McCain chose her as his running mate, makes her prime-time debut tonight when she addresses the Republican National Convention.

In advance of the speech, McCain's campaign fired back today at media questions about the vetting process that led to her selection, calling press inquiries a "faux media scandal designed to destroy the first female Republican nominee" for vice president.

</SUB>

"The McCain campaign will have no further comment about our long and thorough process," said campaign strategist Steve Schmidt, lashing out at "the old boys' network" that he says runs media organizations. "This nonsense is over."

New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, who speaks to the delegates before Palin, defended her against charges of inexperience. "Barack Obama has never governed a city, never governed a state, never governed an agency, never run a military unit, never run anything," he said on CBS. "Sarah Palin has been a mayor. She's been a governor. She has a record of reform. She has a record of leadership. She's run a budget. So, why are all these questions for her? Has anybody ever asked Barack Obama, 'Can you bring up your two kids and be president of the United States?' They are asking, 'Can she be vice president and be a mother?' Come on."

The McCain campaign plans to echo that message in an ad to be aired today arguing that Palin's executive experience over the last 21 months overseeing thousands of state employees, 14 agencies and Alaska's $10-billion budget have better prepared her for the vice presidential role than Democrat Barack Obama's tenure as a junior senator.

</SUB>

The Obama campaign dismissed the McCain camp's efforts to make executive experience the template.

"Look, if executive experience is truly important on the Republican side maybe she should run for president and John McCain should be her vice president," said communications director Robert Gibbs, dismissing the case as "borderline ridiculous."

With the conservative base already rallying to her candidacy, Palin is expected to talk about her role as a reformer in Alaska, where she defeated an entrenched member of the Republican establishment and eventually opposed earmark spending (though she initially supported it) for that infamous "bridge to nowhere" that linked Ketchikan to an island with an airport and 50 residents.

In addition to Palin, delegates tonight will hear from several Republicans whose task it is to make the case for a Republican ticket on economic issues at a time when many voters are struggling with rising gas, tuition and food costs.

Former EBay chief executive Meg Whitman will talk about energy and the economy, while former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina will describe what a first-term McCain presidency would look like, said the campaign. Two former rivals -- former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee -- will also seek to draw "a sharper contrast" between Obama and McCain on the economy. Asked why two former rivals had been given slots at the podium, campaign manager Rick Davis said the two have "comported themselves very well in the primary" and had become friends.

In reference to his speaking role tonight, Giuliani told Fox News that he liked the intimacy of the Xcel Center in St. Paul. "I spoke at Madison Square Garden four years ago," he said, calling that hall "much more vast" and this one, which is "nice and close."

Palin toured the stage this morning to get accustomed to her surroundings in advance of her speech. Democrats signaled their interest in what she says and how it plays.

Democrat Geraldine Ferraro, who in 1984 became the first female vice presidential candidate in American history, told ABC's "Good Morning America" that some die-hard supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton "will be watching very carefully" to make sure that the media treat Palin equally. "Go to her qualifications, go to her experience, go to whatever you want to," said Ferraro, "but make sure it's done on a basis where she's treated like a guy by the media; no sexism, because we'll be looking."

Bill Burton, Obama's press secretary, conceded that Palin was chosen "in part because she has a compelling personal story and can deliver an outstanding and moving speech, and there is no doubt that she will do that tonight."

But he added that she needs to explain the inconsistencies between her rhetoric as a reformer and her record as governor, on issues like the "bridge to nowhere." And, he said, she needs to explain why voters should entrust the U.S. economy to another team of Republicans.

"What the American people will be looking for is whether she can explain how the economic agenda offered by her and John McCain won't just be more of the same Bush policies that have left millions of families struggling to fill up their gas tanks, pay their medical bills, or make their mortgage payments," he said.
</SUB>

Created By: tmobil8

Re: Elections 2008

It depends what channel you watch.

NBC didn't play the audio of the audience's applause during President Bush's speech, so the people watching NBC got the impression that Bush just kept taking long pauses during his speech for no reason.

Neither NBC nor CBS aired Fred Thompson's speech detailing John McCain's numerous injuries while being held captive, including having his teeth broken off at the gums, getting baseball-sized boils under his arms from the heat of being kept in a hot cell with no windows and a tin roof and a light bulb that added to the intense heat.

Is NBC afraid to let people know that Bush still has an enthusiastic base of supporters who realize he has kept our country safe for 7 years?

Are NBC and CBS afraid that if people know what McCain went through, they may change their opinions of him for the better?

Created By: 5146

Re: Elections 2008

Republican's DO need to fix their image. I'm a Christian but I don't PUSH an agenda.

The Los Angeles Times notes that the GOP had two main goals for last night: "to reintroduce McCain to the country after a rocky few days and to denigrate Democratic nominee Barack Obama." The Washington Post points out that the speakers yesterday tried "to turn what Democrats have hoped would be a major liability for McCain—his vocal support for the Iraq war—into an asset by stressing his perseverance in the face of popular opinion." Bush delivered his brief remarks via satellite from Washington in a move that let him avoid "a convention appearance that political operatives predicted could have been uncomfortable" for McCain, who has been trying to distance himself from the unpopular president, notes the Wall Street Journal, which focuses the lead spot of its worldwide news box on a look at how Republican operatives are working to prepare Palin for her convention debut.

The New York Times says that if the "subplot of the Democratic convention in Denver was the lingering resentment between Mr. Obama and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, the undercurrent here is the longstanding tension" between Bush and McCain. Yesterday, Bush became the first sitting president not to attend his party's convention since 1968. And while the president avoided mentioning Obama by name, Lieberman, a Democrat turned independent, had no such qualms. USA Today gives top billing to Lieberman's speech, which the paper calls "remarkable," and notes that the man who was Al Gore's running mate described Obama as simply not ready for the job of commander in chief. "Eloquence is no substitute for record," Lieberman said.

In his eight nonprime-time minutes, Bush was a team player and did his part to distance McCain from his presidency. McCain is "not afraid to tell you when he disagrees," Bush said. "Believe me, I know." The delegates also heard from actor and former senator Fred Thompson, who praised McCain's independence and was quick to mock the Democratic Party's "history-making nominee for president—history-making in that he's the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president." Even the first lady got into the game of changing Democratic talking points into attacks. After listing some of her husband's accomplishments, Laura Bush quipped: "You might call that change you can really believe in."

Without a doubt, the real star of the evening was Lieberman, who, as the LAT puts it, "used his cross-party reach to make an aggressive appeal to Democrats and independents." Lieberman belittled Obama as "a gifted and eloquent young man" and proceeded to say that in his few years in the Senate, the Democratic nominee "has not reached across party lines to accomplish anything significant." The senator from Connecticut described McCain as "the best choice to bring our country together and lead our country forward." ("The Republicans roared for the Democrat, capping the night of contradiction," writes Slate's John Dickerson.)

Despite all the talk about McCain at the convention yesterday, in many ways his vice-presidential pick continued to dominate the conversation, and all the papers front stories about the Alaska governor. Sarah Palin will give her big speech tonight, which will be "her first, and perhaps most important, chance to define herself to the American public," notes the WSJ. Although lots has been said about her, the world hasn't actually seen much of Palin since she was selected as McCain's running mate. Republican operatives have been canceling her few scheduled public appearances as they vigorously work on preparing her for prime time.

The WP notes that while McCain aides have been briefing her on policy issues, most of the time has been devoted to figuring out what she should say in her speech tonight. Aides had already prepared a speech, but since they weren't expecting McCain to pick a woman, they had to "start from scratch" because the remarks were "very masculine." While the initial draft of the speech contained lots of attacks against Obama, it seems that now Palin will focus more on policy, with a special focus on energy and political reform. The WSJ gets word that Palin will pay special attention to her accomplishments in Alaska and will make a direct appeal to supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton.

In a front-page story, the LAT says that McCain's campaign is also vigorously working on "an all-fronts defense" of Palin. Some of this strategy was already in evidence yesterday, as Republican operatives accused Democrats of sexism and criticized the media for paying so much attention to Palin's pregnant teenage daughter. The LAT got hold of some internal documents that urge Republicans to make a comparison between Obama and Palin to counter the argument that she's too inexperienced to be president. "Obama's 'experience' is running for president," the talking points say. "Gov. Palin's experience is bringing people together to get things done."

In another look at whether the McCain camp did enough vetting of Palin before offering her the spot on the ticket, the WP says she was only subjected to a deep, in-person interview with campaign staff on Wednesday of last week. It was at this meeting that she apparently revealed her daughter's pregnancy. She was a finalist along with Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and an official says the campaign was still trying to find out some information about her the day McCain offered her the job.

In recent days, several pieces of information have come out that dispute McCain's description of Palin as a government reformer who has "stopped government from wasting taxpayers' money." But perhaps none of it is as damaging as a story in today's LAT because it turns out that McCain himself criticized some earmarks that Palin's small Alaska town received while she was mayor. In "pork lists" that the senator has published to call attention to wasteful government spending, McCain has included earmarks for Wasilla, Alaska, as "objectionable" three times in recent years. Palin was far from embarrassed about these earmarks, as she defended the practice in a newspaper column. And although McCain's campaign is trying to say that Palin had no choice but to work within a broken system, the LAT couldn't be clearer: "Wasilla had received few if any earmarks before Palin became mayor."

It turns out Palin brought more than just earmarks to her town of less than 7,000 people when she became mayor. In a profile that describes Palin's rise in small-town politics, the NYT says political campaigns used to be a low-key affair before Palin got involved and began talking about wedge issues such as abortion and gun rights. Once she did become mayor, she raised the idea of possibly banning some books from the library, an idea that never got anywhere. Also, when she took office, she cleaned house and asked many who had supported her opponent to resign, a practice that was "virtually unheard of in Wasilla in past elections," says the NYT.

By now, it's hardly a secret that at least part of the reason behind Palin's selection was a desire to appeal to the party's traditional conservative base. By all accounts, religious conservatives are happy with the choice, but this is hardly the first thing McCain has done to woo these voters, details the NYT. McCain has scrapped the idea of changing the Republican platform on abortion and has said that a fetus gains human rights "at the moment of conception." In his attempts to appeal to these voters, McCain "has in some ways gone further than Bush," says the NYT, and some have characterize
