Hello to all Artists and Crafters,

In this forum you are invited to come and look for and post your suggestions on ways for us to advertise and sell our work. All suggestions and tips are welcome, whether they are on or off-line The more the merrier - we can all help each other here.

This is a permanent forum - you will find new suggestions for advertising and selling art and crafts on most of these pages - posted by various members - please add yours. Thanks, Jenny

In the thread Arts & Crafts Fairs you can find some tips for selling at these events and add your own experiences or information about future fairs taking place in your area too.

Other ways of selling your work.

Print advertising - are there any specialist magazines on your work. For mine - there are several magazines read by collectors of nativities, so when I can, I take an ad. The readers are a targetted public.

Leaflets or brochures - again they are not free - but can be a low cost way of making sure that your existing and future clients have a way of contacting you in the future.

If you are graphically inclined, you can create your own leaflets or brochures, and print them on your printer. There are many graphics, and templates online to choose from, and many fabulous papers you can buy to print them on.

THE INTERNET.

Your Website First of all - it is best to have your own website - these can be free - there are many places where you can make your own from free templates - Who can tell us about this???

What alternatives are available if you dont have one?

Arts and Crafts Directories. Again these are often free to put in your link, although sometimes your are required to give an exchange link. It is always better to have more inbound than outbound links to help you on the search engines but there are times that the site is good enough to merit the exchange. This can be ok if they are reputable, such as the Craft Site Directory which has been established for many years and is found to be very effective for many people. What specialist directories have you found useful?

Arts and Craft Articles - there are sites where you can post articles on your particular field of work - these help to estsablish you as "an expert" in your field and can often result in qulaity traffic and sales of your work.
Joanne Martell here at Adland offers this to us for free on her own Craft Aricles Directory and there many others for different fields of work. Please come and tell us about the ones you know of.

There are many other ways to use the internet - please post your experiences on this forum. What works best for you?

I have my first show in 3 weeks! The same friend who's having the metaphysical/new age event has named me a featured vendor! In exchange, I'll help her with registration/set up for the event.

This weekend I will be making extra items, tagging and picking displays. Anyone know where I can get a credit card machine? I plan to have small change, but it would help to have one.

Concerning the internet and getting your own site

First you need to decide if you want your own domain or not. A domain is a name of your own without someone elses attached to it.

http://www.geocities.com/renderud.html is a shared domain. Everyone with a geocities domain starts the same, http://www.geocities.com
http://www.artisticrose.ws is my domain name and site.

Shared domains often are free. Free sites usually have some advertising that you do not control. That is how they pay for them.

If you are just getting started and trying to figure out what can and cannot be done a shared domain is a good place to start.

Either way you should decide on a name that will identify you and give a clue what your site is about.

I use GDI. I signed up because it has some potential to make money thru referrals. I stayed because I like what I can do with my website.

You can find a wealth of hosting by doing a yahoo or google search for web hosting. We also have members at adland who offer hosting. Maybe one of them will see this and add thier info.

I do not use sites that have templates. For me they are too restrictive. They are just right for some people. And there are free ones out there.

Another place to consider is one of the many blog sites. I like Bizzy Blogs and Bizprenuer.
Both have easy to use blogs and are business networking site.

Thanks for, once again, creating a very useful and informative forum!

I also think having your own website to showcase your talent is a wonderful way to advertise.

I haven't added any of my own craft items to my crafting website yet, only because I haven't had the time to actually create the webstore and take pics of all them yet! LOL I will be doing this in the near future.

Requesting links to your site is a great way to get recognition, and also a great way to get the search engines to notice your site. I have a reciprocal links directory on my site as well, and have had quite a few people submit their links there. There is a great site called Link Metro (http://www.linkmetro.com) where you will find niche websites to trade links with.

And, of course, everyone knows (or they should!) that writing your own crafts articles in your niche, and submitting them to article directories is a great way to get yourself known. That is why I set up the Crafts Article Directory on my site - plus it's free advertising for you! I am also looking at offering advertising space in the directory - prices will be very reasonable, and I'll let you know when I have something set up :)

When I was still working, I was a graphic designer for a small local firm, so I have experience creating brochures - another great way to advertise. If you are going to a craft show, make sure you have brochures, or even just business cards, with your name and phone number, and if you have a website, the site's address. Even if they don't buy from you at the show, they may need a special gift for someone, and think of you right away!

Templates are often one of the most difficult decisions when site building.

You can get hundreds of them free with good quality standards of international approval. Good sources:

You can get hosting here through adland free.

The important thing I find is getting a domain name sorted out.

There is sometimes confusion about that and hosting.

The cheapest place I have found for domains is Godaddy .

However not recommended for hosting.

Having got your name you can point it to wherever your site and URL is.

This can be done on a cloaked basis which only allows your domain name to appear in the address bar.

Here is an example. http//www.TheNorthDevonTimes.com does not have a site, but resides on http://www.MyLocalGazette.com however the second URL will not appear in the address bar when clicking on the first even when clicking on pages within the site. Your domain name will also be able to be SE listed using this method. Check here. Incidentally thendt.com has no site either.

I have also opened a forum board for arts and crafts where you are welcome to post and display. Forum traffic rank is not too bad.

Hello Jenny, The consignment store I use is a small shop in a strip mall that doesn't get much traffic -but- they are on the Local first friday night trolley trip of Galleries and shops for arts and crafts. They have many classes and shows that gets their Name and Services out into the marketplace. There is a $ 10.00 a month fee to have my work there. The Framed work doesn't move as fast as the Crafty Work I get done at CafePress of my Paintings. Also I have the Senior Center available to me for hanging my work on their walls for sale. If you are a Senior Citizen and you have access to a Senior Center you might check and see if they have a Senior Shop that offers you the privilage of putting your work in the shop. In North Carolina we had a wonderful "Senior Made" arts and crafts store at the Center that was run by the Seniors for Seniors. Not only crafts, but fresh veggies in season, peanuts and pecans. Hi Jenny,

just a little addendum - or blast from the past.

Once upon a time when I lived in Australia I opened a shop in the centre of town selling (or trying to sell) my Militaria. This was a whole series of suoperb Napoleonic figurines - all being hadnmade by a brilliant artisan in France, called Marcel Riffet. Unfortunately they were very expensive as they were metal, with totally accurate uniform details and standing about 9-10" high with the mounted ones being about 15" high. Each came with a certificate of Authentication from the French authorities and were individually signed on the base. I sold exactly one, the rest (40) still grace my display cabinet - and that causes me no grief at all.

Now the point of this was the fact that running a shop is expensive - particularly iof you have a prime location which mine was, and on a busy shopping plaza under a huge office complex. Lots of passing traffic! Trouble was too many were doing that - passing!

One of my dafter sidelines as a graphic designer was to do the odd caricature birthday card for colleagues. They were not amazing likenesses, but working from a photgraph and getting a bit of basic info. about the person - hobby, etc., I was able to create an accepatble image - more importantly an image people paid for.

So completely against the shop image I moved my drawing board into the front window, and positioned so people could see me work. The results were astonishing. During the lunch hour there were people literally carmmed against the window watching me, and the orders then started to flow. The Militaria side disappeared, and all I did was do caricatures and other cartoons.

This proved to me the value of demonstration, and here I did a whole series of mono illustrations of the Chateaux of the Perigord, and published a small tome with about 20 pix. in it. The book sold through the tourist offices, but when I went to exhibitions, I always took some blue pencil starter pix., and then worked on produing the original images. Result - many sales. When I did not do this - result - zero!

This year I will be doing my CARtoons series again, and if anyone wants to see just what these are I will dig some out an put them out. I will be demonstrating the work, as this is really the only way to stand out at Fairs in my opinion.

I use business cards but I like to put a magnet on the back of the cards so that people will be more likely to put them on their frig instead of tossing them. My biggest form of advertising is simply wearing my work. When I get a compliment I hand out a business card. I'm fine-tuning my web site right now.

There may be some on this forum that would like to have their own web site but do have have a shopping cart. My site did not come with a shoppoing cart either. I use Mals-e. I have used this cart before and really like it. It's free and easy to set up. Check it out at http://www.mals-e.com You can use paypal with it or I have used propay with it also. Propay is another version of a merchant account without all of the monthly fees of a regular merchant account. You can accept credit cards, you just have to manually enter the credit card numbers. It's not automatic. The lowest costing version is $34.95 a year. http://www.propay.com

If you are really challenged with web sites, there's always Etsy, the place for all things homemade, http://www.etsy.com. It's free to join and there's a small fee for posting an item, 20 cents. Then there's a small fee when an item is sold, just like on ebay.

Thanks for your post on shopping carts. It is very important for any product seller to have an immediate way for a customer to buy, especially for art and craft items. A lot fo sales can be lost if a potential customer has to do too much work to purchase the item of their choice.

You have motivated me to install the one that came with my web site - having been a little slow on this! lol I had better take my own advice!

The Etsy site looks good to - it has a very high page ranking on the search engines - which can only help us.

Hi All Artists, Artisans and Crafters,

Forum participation is another excellent way to advertise arts and crafts work - just the same as any other kind of business. And is one often overlooked by us creative people.

It is of course important that the content of the posts is original (as opposed to repetitive ads) - they carry your signature with your business link, and the serach engines do pick them up and they are a good source of site visits. Logically, the more relevant the forum, the better quality of visit you receive when the your site is looked at! Although all visits help your search engine ranking.

So I repeat my suggestion that, in addition to AdlandPro, you can repeat your forum contributions on other forum communities and spread the word..The Etsy site that Jenean recommends also has a forum you can use.

We have a few suggestions in these pages - any more out there to add?

Great suggestion Jenny, I'd like to add that Google will pick on posts to forums and blogs and send it through Google alerts. I get Google alerts through my email. I have it set for beaded jewelry, designsbyjenean, and my web site address www.designsbyjenean.com. So when someone posts it somewhere or i post to my blog or a forum I get an email on that subject. Don't have a Google alert set up. Go to Goggle and type in google alert. you'll be taken to the page where you can set up alerts and then you'll start receiving email regardng the keywords you choose.

Hi, Thanks for inviting me to the arts and crafts forums. I appreciate the opportunity to offer my services as a typesetter to create and print flyers and brochures for your businesses. I do not over charge. I love the work so it is second nature to me, and something I love to do. I do however have to have someone else proof my work, I make mistakes like everyone does.

I also print labels. Candle Caution Labels is the name of my business, but without time, I have not uploaded a site as of yet.

I am the printer of the book for the Texascandleconference.com which is held bi-yearly. I also print soap and bath and beauty product ingredient labels.

On the candl caution labels I offer the service to adding your company's name and contact information to the caution label, something that is usually not removed from the bottom of a candle, giving your customer an alternate way to remember your business for return business. It does not matter the type of candle you create, nor the kind of soap, you can provide me with the information and I will make it fit on almost any size label you want it placed on.

I just received my first set of postcards, and they look great.

A friend is having a holistic health fair in a month, and offered to let me advertise. She also gave me a plug on her Blogtalk radio show.

I would just like to remind people of the new gallery which will enable everyone to post their Arts & Crafts (pics/photos of your work) etc and send them as postcards to prospects etc....here are the full details :-

The gallery will allow you to post your photographs, art, pictures of crafts, music or movie files etc and have them viewed by fellow Adlanders or friends, colleagues etc….whoever you choose to tell or refer !

You can also send them as postcards to promote your arts/crafts etc biz or just send any pic as a postcard to friends family etc OR just download them for your use.

If you have a legit business associated with ANY associated picture or other file such as music or a movie then you are more than welcome to add HTML/banners but pls keep them as small as possible : Lets say a max of 468 x 60 - Thanks

Any other business related advertising not relevant will be deleted.

When you visit the site you must register which should only take a few minutes. If you do not receive your registration email then pls try again using a different email address as sometimes there are ‘spam filters’ by
ISP’s which stop the mail getting to you.

When you are logged in pls go to your control panel to make sure all your details have been added correctly and then click on the ‘light box’ button and choose a category. You can then upload/download any pic you want or send as a postcard….I would suggest you first send a test pic (postcard) to see how it works, maybe to a secondary email address !

If you would please ensure that your pics are not greater than the sizes as specified otherwise you will receive an error message and will have to re-try.

Max Main Pic = 640 x 430
Thumbnail = 160 x 100

I would recommend downloading the FREE ‘Irfanview’ program if you do not already have software to re-size your pics ! : http://www.irfanview.com PLEASE REMEMBER : When resizing your pic save it as another name or else you could ‘replace’ your main pic with the thumbnail on your hardrive !

IF there is any delay in viewing your pics etc it maybe that admin will have to approve first so please allow a little while for this to happen……it will be done as quickly as possible.

Hi Jenny,

Great idea for a forum. This idea will not apply to every type of art, but you can actually sell your pictures as stock images. I am an online art student and quite often we have to find a stock image for our projects and I have noticed that many of the companies we go through will allow anyone to submit a photo, painting, drawing or anything 2-D. If someone, such as an art student or ad agency chooses your picture, you profit. Who knows, you could see your artwork on the next Gateway Computer ad.

I don't have any links handy to add to this reply, but if anyone is interested, you can simply google "stock images" and numerous companies will appear. If you would like to e-mail me, I will get the links for you from my school.

Good morning everyone,

Sorry to be so late in joining. Been very busy.

A few ideas for some of you. I do have my own website as well as an Ebay store. Another way to sell I've discovered is:

our local consignment shop has set up glass cases for artisans to rent.($30 monthly) They add 10% to the cost of my items for their hard work. The cases are locked and only they and me can open them. I go in once a week during season and every other week off season to restock or redesign the items inside.

At the end of the month I get a check and an inventory of what has sold. So far it has been the best and easiest for me. Off season I sold a few low dollar items (lost leaders) as well as high dollar.

I have a problem with craft fairs as so many are selling jewelry and beaded items. You need the prime spot and be first as they walk in the door down here to make a sale. Also with 3 organ transplants I have to control the environment I'm in so many of the fairs in the winter are out for me.

Another way I sell items is in my classes. I teach 5 classes a week. I create a few designs to show, and then make up kits with all the necessary items for the students to make a similar item.. This helps to pay for my creating addiction to buy more to make.

When it is an intricate design they do not want to try, they buy mine.

I will take a great interest in this forum as one of the dearest friends which I have met online, was swindled out if $62,000 when one of the payment processors was found to be illegal.

Brenda was just getting her business back together, when she got the worst news. She was diagnosed with liver cancer. I knew her very well and her story tears at my heart strings.

Hi Jenny,

I am sorry but I still do not understand. I clicked insert image on this . All my images are saved as. gif or.jpg pn my own web site so I go to Widndows Explorer and try to copy the gif image here and I just get a blank box

I have can insert the image from Windows Eplorer here but I can not move it or make it clickable

I have not a clue how to use images on these sort of sites.

I am feeling irritable and bad tempered as I can not get get this WYSIWYG stuff into my thick skull. My Serrif web publishing program cteates images that are too big for this so I dave banners and make them clickable for banner exchangers etc.

Where the WYSIWYG icos are - you go to the "insert pic" box - the one with the mountain and you have to insert a pic that has been uploaded. Then you highlight it with the cursor and click on the add hyperlink box (the globe one) and insert the link of the site.

I dont know if you can do it by adding the pic on explorer and then highlighting and adding the link - as I use Firefox - but I dont see why you cant.

In fact I am going to do this again with IE

I know what you mean now. I will go and play with putting some banners on my Adpro web site now. I use FireFox most of the time. Wires got a bit crossed as I was talking about The Windows Explorer for selecting saved images on my computer not the browser.

Poor dear Brenda is too ill to join Adpro but if her health starts to improve she will certainly contact people who buy from her or help sell her lovely work. It brings tears to my eyes thinking of her. She is having treatment and spending most of her quality time with her children (she has four), incase it is terminal. She has a loving husband who was made redundant and helps her a lot so she has not lost everything and she may get some quality life. Her sewing and crafting is her pasion and it takes her mind off the fact that her illness is probably terminal.
