POET OF THE MONTH – MARCH 2008

Our Poet for March 2008, hails from Phoenix, Arizona area .

I am just so thrilled to get to do this! A lady with so much talent, let me introduce you to …

Kari Shinal

The Phoenix metropolitan area, known as the Valley of the Sun, is home to almost 3 million people and includes the cities of Scottsdale, Glendale, Tempe, and Mesa. The area's explosive growth over the last decade has made it one the largest metropolitan areas in the country.

Choice vacation spot, the Grand Canyon.

Sunny days and comfortable temperatures are the rule November through April, making this time the most enjoyable and popular time of year to visit. Vacation resorts are plentiful throughout the valley.

Downtown Scottsdale has always been an entertainment and shopping center with a focus on art and things trendy, but now downtown Phoenix and the Biltmore area continue to offer more and more top rate restaurants, theaters, museums, shopping and sports venues. The Salt River and Verde River reservoir system east and northeast of Phoenix provides scenic mountain lakes.

The desert provides plenty of wildlife, beauty among the thorns. As you read the poetry you can get a sense of how surroundings intertwine to make beautiful flowing verse.

My name is Kari Shinal and I live in the Phoenix, AZ area with my two of my sons and a great deal of family nearby. I have been writing creatively for some time now, although until recently had not shared my work. Even my family has seen very little.

Some of my poetry confounds, some are just simply inspired. I am grateful to those here in Adlandpro for your encouragement and love. I hope that this month of March brings in the spring just as the saying goes, 'in like a lion and out like a lamb'. Perhaps my poetry presented during this month will bring along the same emotion and feeling that spring gives.

During this month I may present other poems as well and invite all to give their comments as I am considering publishing my own work some day.

Time

It’s your turn to see the sun,
And watch the eagles fly,
It’s your turn to turn unto the heavens’
And look into the sky.

To see the beauty and the light,
That comes from up above
To see the beauty in the night,
That comes from truth and love

And always mindful of the world
You will remain to be
In order to bring a balanced life
For all eternity

And in so doing we rejoice
At your presence here
We hold you dearly to our hearts
And you know that we are here

We stand behind you, stand beside,
And stand above as well
We are the ones who watch you
And we see your spirit swell

And over time we know you’ll grow
Into what you shall come to be
A being eternal graced with truth
To those who wish to see

So reach out my youngest one,
Reach out and touch the stars
And know that you are welcome here
In a home such as ours

In resting places you shall dwell
And fly to higher ground
Like an eagle soars above the clouds
Your peace there will be found

So seek your love and seek your peace
Where ever you may roam
Just know this my precious one
You’re never far from home

The comfort of our open arms
You wish and daily seek
And body seems to fail you
When you have no will to speak

And only you can see these things
When they do come to pass
Like insect on the flower
Peering through a blade of grass

Nothing can hide from your view
As you can plainly see
This causes much pain in you
And makes you wish to flee

Yet you must open up to us
And feel again once more
The love the peace the harmony
That we hold in store

Hold fast to those you love so dear
As they will truly find
The wisdom knowledge and the love
Residing in your mind

*Be loved, give love, see love, know love, seek love.
Allow the love of others to seep into your heart and
all emotions keep to train you in what you need to do
and what you need to say to help all others in their
journey on their way.

On Our Own Wings

Far from the view of the hustle and bustle,
Of everyday life as the leaves do rustle,
I sit as the wind comes rushing by,
And ponder things as the birds do fly.

They come from the east, west, north and south,
And as I watched with gaping mouth,
They rode the breezes up above,
In circles infinite filled with love,

Of the currents upon which they fly,
Of the freedom they feel and as time goes by,
They appear to float so far above me,
Above the rustling leaves and trees.

And as they do I see myself,
Floating above and joining them,
Away from those things that bring me strife,
Away from the toils of every day life,

And for one brief moment I fly with them,
I see nothing but beauty without and within,
This earth on which we travel by,
And watch as those below do try,

To do as the birds do in freedom be,
Floating on air as we wish to be free,
Seeing all as a grain of sand,
Below and with others and as they land,

Upon tree branch, ground, and hill,
Our eyes they see and watch very still,
As they go about their merry way,
Their own lives to live on their own as they may.

We cannot see freedom in front of us,
When we stand upon the ground we must,
Beholden to others in life we be,
And so it has been for centuries,

Yet we are free within our hearts,
And as time flies with wings we impart,
Our love to others with our souls bring,
Like unto birds our hearts they sing,

If we but look unto the skies,
Unto the birds as they do fly,
Our hearts too can fly on Wings,
They too can float, If we let them sing.

Thank You so much for your warm and wonderful introduction. I am so pleased at the confidence you show in me. I am tickled Pink at the video. It is one of my most favorites. Indeed it makes me want to Dance :) I have it here and most definitely intend to watch it again.

The spring makes many wish to dance, and now is the time to do so. Below is my First contribution to this Awesome season!

SunDance

May you dance all your days,
Through lifes wondrous maze,
As the sun shines through,
Let it shine on you.

And even when it seems,
Too hot for us to bear,
The promise it brings this time of year,
Leaves little to despair

As it peaks through the gloom,
Of the bleakest winter,
It brings hope for all
Let none become cinder.

But soak in the sun
And its beauty so bright
And dance in its rays
From morning till night

And never forgetting
The blessings it brings
As all nature rejoices
As the Sun comes on Wings

Tumbleweeds

When the world has got you tossed
Around like tumbleweeds that are lost
And you search for something to grasp upon
To stop the constant tumbling on

The wind takes you places at times you wish
You could go so you can finish
Something you'd begun long ago
Before the winds tossed you too and fro

Sometimes the wind blows you to a place
Which defies all reason wishing to erase
The moment you hit it and you recoil
At the dumb luck you had and plans are foiled

But the wind is fickle and takes a turn
And you land somewhere where your heart burns
For that thing you most desired
It is to that thing you wish to be mired

And once it is found, you ground yourself
Holding strong onto that shelf
And a group follows soon behind
Your tumbleweeds begin entwine

With others who have found the same
Things that you have also dreamed
The consult with you as to the next course of Action
And sometimes a few will loose their traction

And fly away as all lost tumbleweeds do
Then you find they were not for you
But the ones who stay they bind you together
They fair with you all wind and weather

As with life and friends we meet
We all blow round like tumbleweeds
And find those people we've come to love
And dream with like dreamers from above

Kari,

Your writing is great and I love these last two poems. The one so reminds me of my youthful days when I lived not too far from the sea. Your desert description is so beguiling.

Tumbleweeds

I hope you don't mind just throwing mine in here.

The Mystery of Life

I'll tell you a story true.

My life through the years,

Or perchance - yours.

Life, a dramatic mystery story.

Full of drama, deaths, and glory.

One minute, one blissful moment,

I chance to exist in blessing spent.

Even before my Joy is complete,

A new wave of despair I meet.

I am tossed with the waves, beaten,

Broken, almost drowned, but not defeated.

For, as I feel a wave swiftly sweep over me,

*Blessed peace no more I see,

This wave, a wave of joy, sweeps me ashore.

I shudder when I feel around me the Sea no more.

This must be death, the deep, dark grave,

The relief I sometimes crave.

But, alas, I am not buried, not dead, not gone -

Just washed up on a shore, alone.

This is life, not death, not peace,

Just life, the torments that do not cease.

But all is not lost nor given to death,

Not when I feel in me the wonder of breath.

All the foes of this world can I conquer

With this new brevity, this that came from where...

The sea, the earth, the air, Or...me...?

The very depths of the sea did not overcome me.

Shaken, broken. Yes!! But, conquered. No!

The sea left scars that may never go,

And as surely as the winds may blow,

I will again touch and see

The cold depths of the mighty sea.

From whence came this villain after me?

A terrible, roaring monstrosity,

That from the Sea of Life sought to destroy me,

Yet, the sea brought the wave

And new strength it gave.

I stand here and wait, for what I do not know

I cling to this peace for fear it might go.

Oh, Life, with all your heartaches and strife -

There is no solution to your Mystery, Life.

But, mortal that I am

This life in which I drown

Shall take me far

Beyond that distant star;

Till the cold waves of the sea

Take me to the depths of my destiny.

This poem, The Mystery of Life touched me. We all wonder what will happen next. Sometimes we wait for another shoe to fall, the difference is that sometimes we just move onto another size :)

The Gopher

Spring Break is the time for that mini vacation
That all school kids love, but parents or relations.
Dread each year as some holidays we fear
Especially for me, I'd rather be in here

But My kids have indeed had couped them selves up
Like little Cave dwellers my sweet little pups
For most of the winter and I think they'd Forgotten
Where the front door was or even how to open.

But today, Finally, they decide the outside
Was more interesting divinely. Hooray! I cried.
So after a morning of feeling so caged,
They decide to go looking outside amazed.

Since my youngest enthralled with nature for years
Has been fascinated with natures touch,
Anything that moves from Ants to Birds,
Every stone, tree, even grass, dirt and such.

He had decided this day to go outside,
I thought that he'd be riding his bike,
Only to find that he was demanding
His Training Wheels he did not like

But I not being able to oblige at that time
He set his mind to dirt, a favorite past time.
I went out to check and found him squatting
In the yard so perplexed looking down at something

With a long blade of green, a weed I had pulled
The previous day seen, I'd not cleared the yard
As he was giggling I asked him what
He was doing out there, didn't wish him to stop

As he was having so much fun. Attention grabbing,
A Gopher was playing with him, how distracting
Yes my young son At the age of seven
Was Feeding a Gopher like he was in heaven

Now you might think that feeding one of those
Pesky litte stinkers who leave golf holes
All over the yard are a nuisance to some
But to my young bard it was neater than gum

My middle son happens to think a good game
Of Gopher Golf playing is Awesome even in rain.
But back to the younger as he and I watched
With great interest and wonder this little guy talked

This little creature Bolted his wee head
Out of the ground to grab green shred
A morsel or two, some weeds taller, some smaller,
But this little thing was tickled not having to bother

Not having to this job himself he remained quite bold.
And Yes I was careful to inform not to touch or hold
The cute little thing and he kept the weeds long
To keep a bit of distance then the questions began.

Mom can I keep him? No baby, you can't
But Mom he's so cute! Then I had to present
Why gophers are wild things outside
They'd rather be free things completely un-tied

He has his own job and function in life
And it's certainly not cage bound in a vice
He loves to dig even as you
But a cage is no fun if you only knew

So lets let him be as he is working so hard
He's having fun eating out here in the yard
And with your help and loving hand
His job is made easier for that short span

Then up popped that gopher for another peek.
He looked straight at me with no sign of grief
No fear in his eyes, those big teeth were so glaring
For me to look at, And well, Endearing!

"I will talk gopher talk" My youngest said with a smile
And as his teeth chattered I sat for awhile
And giggled to myself, now that's a memory
A Kodak moment for all to see

So here is a picture of that so precious moment
One that will last and I'll never forget
My curious one in all his glory
For it is for him I wrote his story

Poetic Words

Poetry brings to mind a song
Written with love by those who long
For things past, present, and future
To be something that all can shoot for

Bringing to mind those things we hide
Things we hope and things we strive
Expressed to others when voice can't be heard
Finding these things in written word

Pleased we are when these things are found
Small gems of wisdom and wit abound
Sometimes in jest as many who
Cannot voice things to me and you

So when you read ones poetry
Remember those things in your own mind be
Thought, voice, song and heart
No matter how we do impart

How we feel to one another
Sharing all our joys with others
Our pains, our woes and crazy days
We guide each other through the maze

Of each and every day until
We meet our end, some never will
This much indeed we all do know

Kari, I want to say that you are appreciated for all you work you have contributed this month to this forum. Your poetry has flowed with emotion giving us all a sense of feeling in step with our world through your words. God has given you a gift and it makes my heart joyful to see you use it so well.

How we feel to one another
Sharing all our joys with others
Our pains, our woes and crazy days
We guide each other through the maze

How often in our lives it does feel as though we fumble through a maze and to be able to express it with words is definitely something amazing to share.

I am Sooooo Blushing! I am glad you are here and look forward to getting to know you better :) I love the bears. The summers are wild here, I agree. I also agree that this season is the best. I was actually born here and returned coming on 2 years now. Until I came home, I never realized what a Sun Nut I was.

Adventure

As my children do prepare,
For a glorious day,
Filled with sunshine, clouds like pillows
And breezes as they do sing.

The chill is finally over
And they wish to spread their wings
So out they go for a grand adventure
Their hearts like rabbits beating

They go and check the weather
And dress the way they feel
Free for movement fully prepared
They check their list today

They pack their bags and out they go
To play with all their things
With dreams of cowboys and indians
And all other imaginings

And as they ride their Hobby Horse
Together they do find
There are unlikely hero's
Playing in their minds

Once their destination reached
And their query indeed finding
They return to find more treasures
Things inside they'd left behind

Amongst the growing grass so high
Taking care amongst the brambles
They hide their treasures later to find
As they're now swashbuckling pirates

So many adventures to be had,
And only so many hours in a day
At times it lasts a lifetime
So the eyes of children say

Oh the wonder of a child
Their imaginations soar
If I could have so much fun to find
I would Never become bored

Your poem is lovely. I am proud to have written this one as well as I know that some day, as you say, I will want to share it. I also have another that I wrote some years ago in my forum called My Discovery. Feel Free to check that one out as well . I wrote it when my children were small. They have grown so much :)

Sara you have done another great job in your presentation of the POTM. You have chosen a very emotional writer who speaks from her Heart.

Wow. That video was so cool. It makes me remember just how my own imagination had become stagnant for a time. I loved the realization that beauty can return as can wonder even as you grow older.

Emotions

All on the left, none on the right
Feelings of anger, just out of spite
Shortness of temper, shortness of breath
Wanting to spring completely out of step

Pain in the heart, pain in the womb
Feeling like you are trapped in a tomb
And over and over this plays and rewinds
As if a bad movie spins round in your mind

Wanting to run, wanting to hide
When sitting on the carpet to ride
Frustrations set in, no time to explore
The meanings behind so one can close the door

Only these things can be brought to pass
When you let go of those things that are crass
Only when these are addressed can you know
Which direction you should solidly go

And as the rivers, turn into rapids
When you feel the oars sinking low
Eager to find what is finally ending
Stretch out your arms and start letting go

The rapids will ease, the sun will soon shine
You will be able your troubles unwind
Walk through the waters, as they do calm
Into a river pure and running long

Which empties out into infinite possibility
Bringing to pass your dreams infinitely
Hold not to the past look to your future
And your path will become much clearer

Here is a Poem which I feel suits this Month quite well. Spring is coming in like a Lamb this year is the feeling in Alberta right now.

Your Poet Friend,
Michael

        Spring Time

The time of change is coming
for new things to start to grow,
Winter is ending with the warmth
that is here to melt all of the snow.

The rebirth of flowers that bloom
in our gardens and yards every year,
Bringing us joy and happiness
to cleanse all of our tears and fear.

Spring time is now upon us
taking the doubts totally away,
Watching all of our children
running around as they play.

The cold of Winter is leaving
just like strangers that pass by,
Time to till the Gardens so our plantings
can grow under a bright sunny sky.

Leave the cold and darkness where
it belongs and do not look behind,
Start from a new beginning and
see in the Sun what you may find.

Go to the Forests and Mountains
where all is turning so green,
There is seldom this beauty for
which everyone is to have been.

Always this time of year there
is growth of many different powers,
The sprouting of many different
colors of the crops and flower's.

The start of everyone's hopes
and all of their dreams,
Watching them appear like
fresh water in Mountain streams.

I am so glad you posted this. It does bring wonderful pictures of spring. Here, the spring brings brilliant colors from what once was barren land full of cacti.You would not think that a cactus could hold such beauty but indeed it does.

Spring Moon

As we go outside and see the moon,
Through every time and season,
The moon in spring dispells the gloom,
Sometimes far beyond reason.

And as the moon begins to rise,
And we see the shadows of day,
Fade away into the night skies,
Releasing the moons rays.

While the winter moon shines bright,
The spring moon brings a season,
Where chill no longer holds the night,
And clearly we find reasons,

To find the beauty the moon bestows,
As on the sleeping flowers,
Or landscape now bereft of snow,
Flows with potential towers,

Of blossoms in the morning light,
For while at night lay sleeping,
Moonlight fills each leaf and bower,
With immense growth beseeching.

So now the night no longer holds,
Us to our cozie beds,
Tis the Spring Moon that brings our souls,
To Awakenings they are lead.

The Spring Moon brings us Romance,
It brings us Truth and Love.
The Spring Moon brings us Hopefulness,
From the stars above.

They twinkle with the moonlight,
As if to remind,
The joy we have in the dark night,
As the moons light it does Shine.

Wow! I read your first two poems, but there is one section of your first poem that just stuck to me like true love itself...

*Be loved, give love, see love, know love, seek love.
Allow the love of others to seep into your heart and
all emotions keep to train you in what you need to do
and what you need to say to help all others in their
journey on their way.

This is one verse that the vibes just resonate all around me! It is one of the most beautiful verses that I have read in many years. You must have an amazing heart!

I guess you can see that I have very much enjoyed your poetry and hope to read more soon.
